Both Wallace and Osborn were signed to other schools before going JUCO. Wallace with Oregon State and Osborn with Georgia Southern. Wallace's first year JUCO stats Sacramento City JC: 106 of 155 for 1,398 yards, 7 TDs/Unknown INTs - 25 rushes for 330 yards and 13 TD Osborn's first (and only) JUCO year stats Northwest Mississippi CC: 181 of 295 for 2,014 yards, 18 TDs/12 INT - 33 rushes for 78 yards and 3 TDs The only unknown here is Wallace's Year One INT total. But, as far as comparison, Osborn threw the ball almost 30 times a game last season during his only JUCO year. He was responsible for 21 TDs. Wallace threw half as many times as Osborn during his initial JUCO season. Passing and rushing, he accounted for 20 TDs. Osborn's school went 9-1, Wallace's went 9-2. Both led winners. Look, the plain truth is that Osborn has more experience than McNulty. He's got a year of, at least, JUCO ball under his belt. And, at a school who threw it around. I have a hard time believing Canales offense is so far out there that Osborn hasn't picked it up to the same degree McNulty is said to have. Also, if you're into numbers, Osborn was a 3-star recruit. So, it's not like he was some stealth guy sitting out there the way Derek Thompson was when Dodge revealed his "secret" commitment. It's hard to believe this 3-star recruit who threw almost 300 passes as a JUCO last season is so far behind this kid from Iowa that he can't even get on the playing field. It's a horsesh*t excuse for a conference like the Sun Belt. As bad as Todd Dodge was, there is no way were are so thin we should be falling behind Arkansas State 31-0 at half. We played Houston within three at half. These are the most experienced coaches we've had since Hayden Fry was here. I have a hard time believing they can get the team up for home games only. If so, we've hired the wrong guys. Dan McCarney said no excuses. It was refreshing, and it sticks - no excuses. No falling behind Arkansas State 31-0. The only thing I see that McCarney needs to get real about is his backup quarterback situation. Be like every other coach in the country and pull a kid if he isn't moving the team. For pete's sake, Texas was switching Little McCoy and Ash every other play at one point. It is aggravating to watch games be written off the way this staff writes off games if the #1 QB is down. I don't care who does what in practice. If a guy ain't moving the ball, the ain't moving the ball. The referee and scorekeeper don't ask us what happened in practice. If McNulty, bless his little pea-pickin' heart, ain't moving the ball, pull his ass out of there and give someone else a shot at it. The seniors on this team aren't standing around waiting to lose again just so some freshman can be groomed for 2013 or 2014. It's ridiculous. Play to win or go home.6 points

I continue to be shocked by some of the football posts since the games yesterday! So, you can be shocked at this! Most of the best Mean Green players graduated or left UNT after last season! Let's look at this.... June Jones at your favorite school in Dallas: Year One---- 1-11 (only win was against I-AA team Texas State in close battle) Year Two---- 8-5 (great season for SMU. Bowl victory) Non-conference wins inlcuded: victory over I-AA S.F. Austin) Year Three-- 7-7 (Bowl Loss) Currently--- 5-3 (Probably Bowl Bound---maybe New Orleans) Wow, the only difference is, y'all would have been calling for his firing after the first year. To the member that said "all talk", regarding McCarney, you should be ashamed! The member that called for numerous firing of coaches, you should be ashamed! For those of you who expect this to be the best team in a very-improving SunBelt, you should be ashamed! You have your rights to make your comments...so I decided I had the right to make mine! For those new gomeangreen.com posters or fans, don't fall victim to the "doom and gloom" members. However, I fully expect, "the doom and gloomers" to jump aboard the bandwagon as things get better. It is your history! This post has been promoted to an article5 points

I don't really think the problem is his putting in one QB over another. I think it's more like why doesn't the other QB get a chance to show what he's got in a game that was clearly a blowout by the 4th quarter? I'm not really a "star" guy, but "the other QB" was a 3 star QB who happens to have a very successfull JC year in Mississippi under his belt, and was a close number two behind DT back in the Spring. What does McNulty have besides what he has shown thus far? Good practice skills I guess. But as you say, we just don't know. Btw, we all know that the QB is CLEARLY the most important position on the field these days, so I really don't see any problem with posters questioning what is going on with that position. I'm very happy that we hired McCarney to lead us out of the wilderness, but the guy is not God or even Moses. If our last "God" taught us anything, it should be that anyone that we hire is only human.5 points

Theres a difference between being frustrated and flat out crying over the smallest things. Boo hoo...so he put in one QB over another. Maybe McNulty shows more potential. We don't know because we are not on the team. But to say it's because of McCarneys friendship with his dad is just plain pathetic.3 points

So, we're calling McNulty playing a question of nepotism, to use the term quite loosely? At this point, Thompson is the guy for the rest of the year, at which point, he'll reevaluate the situation and maybe give Osborne a chance next year. We're 3-6, with a chance to win out and finish .500. I know you guys are going to come after me guns blazing for having "low expectations", but I'm actually thoroughly impressed with the prospect of even finishing one game below .500. This is a good sign of progress, considering the train wreck we've been. Now, blast me to negative town.3 points

So what type of messages are you expecting during a losing season? Sunshines and puppy dogs will be blown up your a$$ when this team wins. It's the nature of the beast we call fan message boards. The team consistently loses, you'll see lots of negative posts and most of the fanbase on suicide watch. The team consistently wins, and you'll see kumbayah and bubblegum posts all day long. The day I don't see anger from fans when NT continues to lose is the day I quit coming to these boards.3 points

dear lord... this is insightful. everybody is a fan of the back-up to the back-up qb. Our newly hired coaching staff doesn't know what they are doing. we should fire assistant coaches after being together for 9 games. yes, they had their arses handed to them. everyone is mad. another sign of a bad team is ... get this, inconsistency... when adversity hits, you don't adapt well... if coach mac wants mcnulty to get reps when thompson is out. then that is it. this isnn't bogus reality tv, we DON'T vote to see who gets kicked in the nuts or kicked off for eating too many snacky cakes... oh my god, I think I'm going to vommit on myself...3 points

These people need to refine (or maybe actually define) their narrative. I think it's idiotic that people are saying the occupy wall street folks are all for redistributing wealth and basically just trying to push their socialis views. That's a simplistic and wrong view of what these people are protesting. I'm sure there is a portion of the group that is BUT I don't think socialist take over is the actual agenda. They need to be more clear to gain support, they need to make people realize they are against citizens united v. Fec, which is one of the most ridiculous decisions ever made, corporations are not people (and if you think that, you're dumb. End of story), they need to talk about the fact that deregulating the banks was and is a terrible terrible idea and is partially to blame for why we are at this place we are now (Fannie and Freddie can be thrown in there too, I realize that). And how can people argue that a person that makes a obscene amount of money should be taxed less than the average Joe? Yeh I get it, they probably worked hard to get there, I don't think they should be taxed a ridiculous percantage amount more than most, just maybe the same amount as regular people, yes they look like they are paying more because they may be paying millions, that's relative, for some of these people a million is equivalent to $100 for someone like us middle false folk, sucks to lose it but it's certainly not going to break me by any means. And the job creator thing is bunk. They've had what, 8 year with the bush tax cuts? Where are the jobs? I just don't understand how people can be so against this movement. This is not some Bolshevik revolution like some seem to think.2 points

OK, yes, it puzzles me as to why Osborn never gets to see the light of day off the bench. The Arky State game was the perfect, PERFECT, opportunity to see Osborn in action. But, alas it appears it will not be...for what ever reason...here at UNT. I have met Osborn's parents...they live in Alabama and I am told Osborn's girlfriend still lives in Alabama. It's a hard trip for the parents to come to Denton and to away games and never ever see Brent take a snap. With all that going on, I would imagine that Brent leaves UNT after this season...if, of course, he would still like to PLAY a little football. Too bad, but it's the way it is at UNT with Coach mac. For some reason, Brent is just not going to get the chance to show what he can do in game situations. So be it, but I would not blame Osborn one iota if he left UNT after this season. If he does, I certainly wish him well...and would remind everyone on the board that Osborn didn't quit, UNT quit on him. It happens...tough call, but it does.2 points

The aggravating thing about Tulsa is that McNulty throws the second pick six on the first drive of the second half. So with over 13 minutes left in the second quarter, we're down 34-3. Is McNulty pulled? No. McNulty stays in the game until midway through the fourth quarter. Why? It was obvious long before then that he wasn't getting the job done. Those of us who are disappointed are disappointed because it smacks of not playing to win. Some see favoritism for a friends' son. I see choosing development over winning, and that's crap when McCarney has asked the seniors to step it up a notch this year to the degree where he's run off some of their long time teammates for not meeting his expectations. So, which is it? Are the seniors to play their asses off because the coach really wants to win? Or, are the seniors to just sit by and take the pain because the coach has given up and now wants to "develop" a quarterback who may or may not win the starting job even next year given that Thompson is a junior. See what the deal is here? It's more than fanbased. It's that McCarney has sold this hair on fire attitude all off season long to the players. Then, they have to sit and deal with "well, we're happy McNulty led the team to a couple of second half scores"...after not moving the ball while we fall behind 31-0. See how that could be perceived by seniors who have dedicated themselves to McCarney based on his word? McCarney needs to be true to his word, give no excuses, and coach every second of every game to win, if that's what he told the upperclassmen he'd do.2 points

Who cares about Preseason Rankings in late October, especially for a non-AQ like the SBC? Those are made in July or August based off of some media guy's best guess. Arkansas State and ULL are damn good teams, about as good as the SBC has thrown out there over the last 5 years. I agree we shouldn't get crushed like this, but you act like Arkansas State should just suck because Phil Steele picked them to finish poorly in a conference that most will admit that they only cover because they have to. I think ArkStFan is dead-on about the difference Hugh Freeze has over Dan McCarney right now. Steve Roberts was a good coach--frankly, I am still surprised they fired him--Todd Dodge was the worst FBS coach of all-time. Sure Chico was here last year, but the recruiting here, especially last year with Dodge in limbo, was bad, just as it turned out to be in all of his years and in Dickey's last two. Same goes for ULL's coaching situation. We recruited like we were going to play District 7-5A or whatever Southlake Carroll plays. The SBC gets talent, especially at some of these schools where academics are less stringent (Troy). Our lines are as weak as Coach Mac has ever seen, which makes our Defensive improvement even more amazing. Our QB and WR situation is just awful, and has been for a long time here. The mindset of "this is the highest paid coaching staff ever at UNT, so we should be winning right now" is very short-sighted. We got Coach Mac because we are making a commitment to him to build this thing up from the ashes. Believe it or not, he has already done that, just by winning 3 games. I said it before and I will say it again, if he gets this bunch to 5 or more wins this year, he should be SBC Coach of the Year. He will have done something amazing in a very short amount of time. And if we are going to stick to preseason predictions, let's take a look at the prediction from the guy who sees us everyday--Brett Vito said we would go 3-9. That looks pretty accurate right now.2 points

If there's over reaction it just shows that there are people that care about UNT and that we do have our share of good fans. That is what fans do...deep down most if not all of us are realistic but it is our job to over react because if we don't do stuff like that expectations can never be set or demanded for a team or program.2 points

Exactly. No JUCO QB would ever be signed if year of eligibility were in questions. What you want is a guy who gives you a chance to win. McNulty hasn't even come close to doing that. The unfortunate thing about the quarterback position is that, sooner or later, you are going to have to make a play with your arm. It's a harsh, harsh reality, I know...but, it's the football truth. Whatever McNulty may or may not be capable of in 2013 or 2014, he is not capable of moving the offense with his arm in 2011. Not even close. Again, stick Osborn in there. If he also fails, then we simply know we have pretty much zero QB talent on the roster. But, at least give him a chance to give the team a chance. We've seen McNulty the Practice Heisman in crunch time. Now let us see Osborn when the game is still in the balance.2 points

Yeah and North Texas now has two years in Canales' offense. So what? Again, I've never claimed to expect us to win out this year. But there is no excuse to be down by 31, and really came within a late first half turnover from being down by 38 at half, to an ASU team that was a pre season bottom pick in the conference. My only comment is that Osborn, in his limited opportunities, has looked so much better in the games he's been allowed to play in than McNulty ever dreamed about.2 points

Seneca was a JUCO. McNulty isn't good. He can run. So what? A quarterback throws the ball. Going into the final drive, he had only thrown for 78 yards. Color me unimpressed that he led a touchdown drive against Arkansas State's spares in the waning moments of a blowout. When Arkansas State had their guns in the game, his passing total was a fat 78 yards for three quarters worth of work. Pathetic. This is the thing that is aggravating me about McCarney. If a guy isn't doing the job - obviously not moving the team - put the other guy in. When you're down 31-0, there is no harm in letting both play. It was painfully obvious that McNulty was not going to get us back into the ball game. Let Osborn try.2 points

Hmmm...other than a couple of loose cannon shots and the questions regarding the handling of the QB situation (which I agree with), I think the post-game reaction has been fairly mild compared to usual. I guess a little bitchin comes with the territory after a blowout loss when you have been down for so long. On the plus side, we've all got 13 whole days to get over this thing and whip up a brand new fresh batch of green Koolaide for Troy.2 points

You'd think that these guys were hoping for a bowl sweep in one season or something. Those are probably the ones who saw UNT's SBC champ run and never noticed that the games got closer and closer because Dickey could never keep the talent gap between UNT and the rest of the belt going. They're more than likely the same ones who expected Dodge to blow out the belt in his first season with the same crew of players recruited by Dickey, which by that point, were behind in talent to begin with.2 points

At the coach's show each Monday night, Coach MaC has said over and over that in practice, McNulty does a better job. And that while he's aware of some guys playing better than they practice, he doesn't believe it. And since practices are closed, for good reason I think, we must believe that Coach is correct in his quaterback assessment or that he is not being honest. Because I have not reason to think otherwise, I have to believe that McNulty practices better than Osborn. I hope Derek Thompson is 100% quickly because our offense drops a level or two without him. As I stated in a thread a few days back, Arkansas State placed more players on the pre-season all Sun Belt team voted by the coaches as well as unofficial media teams. ASU returned ten starters on defense. Tonight was junior QB Ryan Aplin's 23rd start and his 29th appearance as a QB for ASU. We returned three receivers who had 5 TD catches a piece last year. Not only were the tools in place for Freeze, he had a year on campus as the offensive coordinator and knew which assistants were worth keeping and who needed to be let go. You just can't expect the coaching change at UNT to have the same impact as the change at ASU. As for the "it's the freaking Sun Belt" argument. Was Dickey the best coach in the Sun Belt 2001-2004 or did he have the best horses? One league loss in that span. That last Sun Belt champion UNT team was rated 102 in the nation by Sagarin. ASU is 57, ULL 81 and FIU 89. After the ASU game, UNT is rated 126 and would have been a 5 point dog to the 2004 edition of the Mean Green and a one point dog to the 2001 edition. I'm not a Sagarin fan but it is useful for these sorts of comparisons.2 points

Somebody f'ing drug test McCarney. "It was good to see him score some touchdowns in the second half"? What the hell planet is he living on? Hey, Coach Dan...what about the role he played in us falling behind 31-0? Because he's "tough" and a "competitor" we forget that he can't f'ing lead the team to score when the game is still in question? All of that tough competitiveness was good for 78 freaking passing yards through three and a half quarters of play as we fell behind 37-7. Unbelievable. No wait...this is North Texas...totally believable.1 point

Keith7, my issue has always been how the two were used early in the season. McNulty was brought in against Houston after DT put us in scoring position. The result? McNulty scores the first TD in Apogee history. Against Alabama, Osborn drives us to like their two yard line and looked sharp doing it. McNulty is brought in at this moment only to lose roughly 12 yards on two plays securing Bama's shutout. Why hasn't Osborn been inserted in like scenarios where success is more easily achieved? Early in the year, in games when it counted, Osborn was clearly superior to McNulty yet McNulty got the start. I was very vocal on here asking why. DT has started since then to put an end to the issue, that was until yesterday. Doesn't surprise me that McNulty played in DT's spot as I would guess Osborn has had it with our program. Sorry is ypu don't like my take on this, but that is how I see it. We have to take McCarney's word for it since practices are closed, none of the other coaches speak to the media, Vito won't dig for answers since they'll just shut him out and he makes his paycheck on covering NT and we sure as hell can't afford another buyout, thus making McCarney virtually untouchable.1 point

A few years ago who was the TCU QB who sat on the bench for 4 years and his 5'th year of elgibility became a contributing factor to a TCU successful season? That is what I hope colleges see more of rather than "if I don't start I can always transfer." We beat Tennessee back in 1975 with our 3'rd string QB (Glen Ray?) as I recall. You always need more than just 2 QB's and if anyone should know that it is us with all our QB injuries in past years. GMG!1 point

Got5onit, You really think being upset and calling a head coach who has not been at Denton less than one season "all talk" are the same? My comments are to those calling for " a host of coaches to be fired " and/or "he is all talk". There is a difference! Some is the talk of "dissapointed fans" the other is a talk "of the doom and gloomers" who reak over this fanboard, with unbridled negative comments! All I know is, if we don't give Coach Mac a few years, it is a real shame. I have never seen a work ethic and desire to turn a team around more than anyone in my entire life. I am blessed each and every day to have him as our head coach. "All Talk", "Fire Assistants" is and will always be "shamful" to ParksAndRecRick in the first year at the helm.1 point

Ya know, I'm happy we've got McCarney here, and I feel that he'll eventually get it done, but when I sit here and imagine things playing out the way that they are at the QB position in a situation where McNulty's daddy was not McCarney's best friend, I just think that Osborn's complete and total benching would be a complete and total impossibility. Unless there's something serious going on behind the scenes that we are unaware of, what he is doing here is so blatantly obvious that it's ridiculous. I just hope that there is a good reason for it, because we've already recently seen what happens when a head coach arrogantly does whatever he wants with no regard as to how it appears to the fanbase.1 point

That ASU qb was legit. When is the last time we had a qb that good? Pre-Scott Hall. Pretty impressed with what our staff has accomplished with what they have to work with. Mac inherited talent similar to what June Jones inherited and is doing better than SMU in year 1 of Jones.1 point

Man couldnt say it any better, I saw the same thing! I think the team sees that special relationship between Mac and McNulty. I think you have nothing to lose at this point at half. Try and find out who wants to play come game time. Who cares if Osburn might miss some passes during practice and doesn't do as well as McNulty in practice, if he can make a game time difference!
