Can I be the one McNulty swings at? I don't believe he could hit me.11 points

As I stated in a thread a few days back, Arkansas State placed more players on the pre-season all Sun Belt team voted by the coaches as well as unofficial media teams. ASU returned ten starters on defense. Tonight was junior QB Ryan Aplin's 23rd start and his 29th appearance as a QB for ASU. We returned three receivers who had 5 TD catches a piece last year. Not only were the tools in place for Freeze, he had a year on campus as the offensive coordinator and knew which assistants were worth keeping and who needed to be let go. You just can't expect the coaching change at UNT to have the same impact as the change at ASU. As for the "it's the freaking Sun Belt" argument. Was Dickey the best coach in the Sun Belt 2001-2004 or did he have the best horses? One league loss in that span. That last Sun Belt champion UNT team was rated 102 in the nation by Sagarin. ASU is 57, ULL 81 and FIU 89. After the ASU game, UNT is rated 126 and would have been a 5 point dog to the 2004 edition of the Mean Green and a one point dog to the 2001 edition. I'm not a Sagarin fan but it is useful for these sorts of comparisons.6 points

Yes, and thank God he is. He had done amazing things at UNT. No, not perfect and not every decision was the best, but geez, he has grown our AD program leaps and bounds from where it was when he got here. Let's all just take a breath and realize that we were not going to win the Sun Belt title this year. Our team is making great progress and going in the right direction. Last night was tough...injuries suck. We have a by-week to rest and get ready for another tough road game in Troy. We now have hope in future of the program. Please don't drag RV or Coach Mac down when we are only 9 games into the first season of a new era. The wins will come.5 points

McNulty has one good freaking DRIVE, not game, but DRIVE, and he's warranting comparison to an NFL QB, and a UNT HOFer? Stop it right now. Seneca Wallace is/was an excellent athlete. McNulty is average in the athleticism department. Just because he's small doesn't make him athletic. He's not much faster than Thompson.5 points

A top running back vs ??? 10 returning defensive starters? A junior QB with loads of experience blowing up the school record book? Three receivers with 5 TD's and another who transferred in who was a 4 star? There are no objective facts to support the idea UNT entered this season with talent equalling ASU or ULL. UNT got almost the same yards against ASU as last year, but ASU is more experienced on defense from last year and plays a more aggressive scheme. ASU now has two years in Freeze's offense and he was hired four weeks before spring drills last year when offensive coordinator Clay Helton quit late to go to USC.4 points

Yes, this was a tough loss. But by no means does it warrant the reaction that it is getting. We're 3-6 with 3 games left that are VERY, VERY winnable. Don't judge Troy based on previous performance. Troy has two wins against two of the worst teams in college football, and they're by a combined 4 points. They are simply a bad football team. Western Kentucky is looking good, but we own them, plain and simple, and we're a better team at home. Middle Tennessee is one of the worst teams in college football(we win this one HUGE). I'm hearing that Thompson has a concussion, so he should be good to go next week. If he's healthy, we could definitely still win 6 games. With McNulty at QB however, all bets are off. Don't write this football team off just yet, because this season is far from over. Go Mean Green!4 points

Ya know, I'm happy we've got McCarney here, and I feel that he'll eventually get it done, but when I sit here and imagine things playing out the way that they are at the QB position in a situation where McNulty's daddy was not McCarney's best friend, I just think that Osborn's complete and total benching would be a complete and total impossibility. Unless there's something serious going on behind the scenes that we are unaware of, what he is doing here is so blatantly obvious that it's ridiculous. I just hope that there is a good reason for it, because we've already recently seen what happens when a head coach arrogantly does whatever he wants with no regard as to how it appears to the fanbase.4 points

Man, I'm real sorry you expected a big turn-around this year. Can you expand on what you feel the coaches are responsible for? We've equaled last years' win total and have 3 more to play after this one. We knew this one might get ugly. A State is playing good football this year. Fundamentally sound. Thompson is out. Our O-line is full of noobs. Our QB is a noob. The only way we get pressure is blitzes and Aplin is too quick/smart for that. We need Dline that can get pressure. We either need some players or we need some current guys to step up and become players.4 points

I get that mcnulty is the backup and he needs his playing time in the event DT doesn't come back for some reason or gets hurt again, but doesn't Osbourne need his playing time too? What if mcnulty gets hurt? I think this is a personal thing between Osbourne and mccarney. Otherwise Osbourne should have been in on the last drive, right? On the positive side, the second half was mcnulty's best football BY FAR! I don't hate the kid, but he's been horrible before tonight's second half and it's hard to believe he's that much better than Osbourne. Edit: I didn't expect to win this game with DT, so I'm not blaming the loss on mcnulty. Just trying to figure out why Osbourne gets no PT.3 points

I continue to be shocked by some of the football posts since the games yesterday! So, you can be shocked at this! Most of the best Mean Green players graduated or left UNT after last season! Let's look at this.... June Jones at your favorite school in Dallas: Year One---- 1-11 (only win was against I-AA team Texas State in close battle) Year Two---- 8-5 (great season for SMU. Bowl victory) Non-conference wins inlcuded: victory over I-AA S.F. Austin) Year Three-- 7-7 (Bowl Loss) Currently--- 5-3 (Probably Bowl Bound---maybe New Orleans) Wow, the only difference is, y'all would have been calling for his firing after the first year. To the member that said "all talk", regarding McCarney, you should be ashamed! The member that called for numerous firing of coaches, you should be ashamed! For those of you who expect this to be the best team in a very-improving SunBelt, you should be ashamed! You have your rights to make your comments...so I decided I had the right to make mine! For those new gomeangreen.com posters or fans, don't fall victim to the "doom and gloom" members. However, I fully expect, "the doom and gloomers" to jump aboard the bandwagon as things get better. It is your history! This post has been promoted to an article3 points

Seneca was a JUCO. McNulty isn't good. He can run. So what? A quarterback throws the ball. Going into the final drive, he had only thrown for 78 yards. Color me unimpressed that he led a touchdown drive against Arkansas State's spares in the waning moments of a blowout. When Arkansas State had their guns in the game, his passing total was a fat 78 yards for three quarters worth of work. Pathetic. This is the thing that is aggravating me about McCarney. If a guy isn't doing the job - obviously not moving the team - put the other guy in. When you're down 31-0, there is no harm in letting both play. It was painfully obvious that McNulty was not going to get us back into the ball game. Let Osborn try.3 points

I would be absolutely shocked if Osbourne, if he has enough eligibility left to make transferring an option, doesn't leave at season's end. It's not even about who the best QB is anymore. We don't even see Osbourne when games are CLEARLY out of hand. And, no, I don't think McNulty will grow into being a Seneca Wallace type.3 points

Reminds me of a 3-2 pitch that was clearly a strike that was called a ball, with the bases loaded. (wouldn't say that USC screwed)3 points

It's hard to agree that we do have the talent or experience on par with FIU, Lafayette, and Arkansas State. I just don't see it.3 points
-
Sorry , but this is the freakin SUNBELT. One team doesn't have so much more talent than any other team. Hell TD almost beat ASU a few times. No reason to ever get beat down by fellow conference mate , no matter what the situation. We have talent , it's not like we are throwing out nothing but walk ons out there3 points

Offense and defense gave up as soon as McNutty stepped onto the field. Judging by the body language I'd guess Mac and his dad are the only two on the sideline that believe McNutty deserves to be out there.3 points

The team is Jekyll and Hyde right now, but if you're making any insinuations about the quality of this coaching staff, then I've have to adamantly answer that yes. We have turned the corner. Put this team out there last year, and you'd have Atterbury at QB, and the score would be 42-0 at half.3 points

You can't tell me you wouldn't expect this outcome with a backup QB. Lighten up. This board can really suck sometimes!2 points
-
To be expected on this board. I find myself less and less excited to come here and discuss the intricacies of North Texas football. While I am glad the 200 ravenous fans we have are centrally located on this board, it does get frustrating reading this at times.2 points

Hmmm...other than a couple of loose cannon shots and the questions regarding the handling of the QB situation (which I agree with), I think the post-game reaction has been fairly mild compared to usual. I guess a little bitchin comes with the territory after a blowout loss when you have been down for so long. On the plus side, we've all got 13 whole days to get over this thing and whip up a brand new fresh batch of green Koolaide for Troy.2 points

So what type of messages are you expecting during a losing season? Sunshines and puppy dogs will be blown up your a$$ when this team wins. It's the nature of the beast we call fan message boards. The team consistently loses, you'll see lots of negative posts and most of the fanbase on suicide watch. The team consistently wins, and you'll see kumbayah and bubblegum posts all day long. The day I don't see anger from fans when NT continues to lose is the day I quit coming to these boards.2 points

The best player on the defensive side of the ball, which means the best player on the team. I will miss you, Zac. Get better and we will (hopefully) see you this Spring.2 points

Actually Osborne has 3 years left. Same with DT, no? And I cannot agree with your point. If he is trying to maximize his friend's son's college football career, they should have let him redshirt and taken a year to put size on him and improve his passing game. Then he could be a backup for the last two years of the other two's eligibility and possibly be a solid junior ready to step in. Or since our QB's seem to be so fragile lately, fill in for injuries and prove that he BELONGS there. I am just so sick of the whole "he might not be the best option, but since he has one extra year of eligibility, it is worth putting the lesser player on the field" argument.2 points

If true and I've watched our QB situation in amazement, what away to treat a 20 year old young man who was recruited prior to new HC. Life isn't fair and Ossy's getting a first hand view of how fair things aren't. If I was an Andrew Smith fan back in the day I might have said the same thing. I like Smith a lot, but thought Hall should start. Having said that A. Smith was light years ahead of McNulty!!!!! Freaking Light years!!!! Oh, Dickey couldn't recruit QB's either!!!! He was all Stealth!!!2 points

Scott Hall had a lot more talent around him on both sides of the ball. Hall was great because he was good at not making bad decisions. He also had a world-class run game and first rate defense. We don't have any of those things right now. I know everyone wants to win big now, but we are at least not losing games in which we should be competitive. This staff knows what they are doing, it's just going to take more than 8 games to unsink the Titanic.2 points

Not as long as your memory is good enough to recall that in games determined by 21 or more it is 4-2 ASU lead. Largest margin of victory in the series was 56 at someone's Homecoming.2 points

That ASU qb was legit. When is the last time we had a qb that good? Pre-Scott Hall. Pretty impressed with what our staff has accomplished with what they have to work with. Mac inherited talent similar to what June Jones inherited and is doing better than SMU in year 1 of Jones.2 points

You said it yourself "this is college football" These are kids. You're supposedly a grown-up. Act like it and accept that they need support. They don't need "don't care about winning" and "call themselves college athletes." I enjoy most of what is posted here, but not the QUITTERS who take it so seriously and personally that they can't support a team that obviously needs it.2 points

yeah we should have expected to get our asses handed to us by a team we lost to by 5 last year with our 4th string QB, yup we should have expected to be down 31-0 at the half to a team that barely snuck by ULM and WKY.2 points

If Mcnulty is good enough to play QB here, then why weren't the new coaches going to let Dodge play QB here?2 points

Fans that don't get pissed seeing their team and coaches give up are pathetic. IMO Not saying anything ridiculous like mcarney should be fired, but this is unacceptable. Plain and simple.2 points

Baby steps is winning three of 4 at home when we haven't won that many games at home since 2004. Baby steps would be winning four or more games total this season when that hasn't happened either in seven seasons.2 points

Prediction: when we are losing by 35+... we will put in osborn and he will actually get us in the endzone twice.2 points

The very definition of the top 1% is really skewed, and an inappropriate target of increased taxation. This is because, as you've just stated, it's got a really fleeting membership. There are a LOT of people out there who get lucky ONCE, have a great year of income, and get taxed all to hell for it, then return to the 99% where they belong the following year and ever after. The 1% people are angry at would more likely be the top 1% of asset holders. Those guys are the ones using the system, and the population to increase the contents of their ever growing toy chests. And I don't care what the AM dial tells you, no individual can, simply by pulling up his boot straps, go from having nothing to becoming one of those guys. You've got to build that kind of wealth over generations. As to a sense of entitlement, does no one here feel that you should be able to get an education, go to work in a job that applies that education, and earn enough money for a decent house, a couple reasonable cars, a new pair of jeans every couple years, and maybe a day or two a year frolicking in the pool? Yeah, you don't have that right as long as there are 2.6 billion Indians and Chinese who are better educated, harder working, hungrier, and much, much cheaper than you. That's what I'm mad about. Should I just passively allow 100 years of collective American prosperity across all classes simply evaporate because Steve Forbes needs another nickel per share earnings by selling my job up the river to graduates of Indian Institute of Technology?2 points

I just don't understand why we even offered a ship to Osbourn if he couldn't beat out a true freshman who was not recruited by any other D1 school in the country. Other small schools wanted him as an ATH , but not as a QB.1 point
