Well, I staying with the Green Kool-Aid and a newly positive team attitude...I'll say the Mean green pull off the upset of Arky State...close. but the Mean green get it done on the foot of none other than Zach Olen....beautiful drive late in the 4th by Thompson and Company, great snap by dependable #78, Troy Kokjohn, perfect catch and hold by Will Attaberry and Zach nails a 47 yard-er to seal the win for the Mean green. Yep, book it Danno...I've seen it in the tea leaves...green tea leaves that is. I watched the final 3 innings of the Rangers game at Fuzzy's Taco last night and just after the last fly ball was caught ending the Rangers season a chant of UNT, UNT,UNT rang through the restaurant. Many of the soccer players and fans that attended the game cheered Denton's own Sunbelt champions lessening the sting of the Ranger's loss. Way to go ladies! You made UNT proud. GMG1 point

I want North Texas to win every game, of course, but I try to be a realist about the outcome. This time pastorgrant seemed to be preaching to me..."Oh, ye of little faith!" so I'm flipping by original thought of an stAte win by seven to a loss by seven. Mean Green 31 Red Wolves 241 point

But...but...but...remember UNT scholarship football players are undernourished and starving at the end of each month as we were told in a previous thread because their stipends are too low! How dare the Sunbelt even consider not going to the full allotment! OK...seriously, I hope the conference allows it's schools to go to the full $2000 increase if it is within their budgets to do so. But, I would hate to see a recruiting disadvantage occur to those schools who cannot go to the full amount. I am sure it happens already, but don't want it to get "worse" from a recruiting standpoint. These kids earn every dime they get in tuition and hosing/food/books assistance...every darn dime. But, they still have a pretty good deal...which they have earned...compared to other walk-on athletes who work just as hard and get ZERO, partial scholarship athletes (some getting only book money or some percentage of tuition) and the "regular" college student who pays a good portion of their own expenses or gets saddled with several thousand dollars in student loans upon graduation. BUT, who really believes that a "full scholarship" really means to cover ALL the costs of a college education? Come on folks. We see all the coaches and parents and players beaming at the press conferences on national signing day. Every one of them are really happy and seeing sugar plums dancing in their heads over all the cash they will save on "Johnny's" college education. I doubt many truly believe that they will not have to chip in a bit to cover extras and perhaps even some food and lodging assistance...gasp...how can that be...it was a "free ride"!!!! Really, really? So, should UNT go to the full $2000 additional, where will the extra funds come from? I doubt that the Athletic Dept. budget will be increased to cover this additional...remember, it is for all scholarship athletes not just football and basketball players, and the donor base is just now beginning to grow to any substantial level at all. Coaching salaries are way up, the department has several more development folks chasing those donor dollars, travel costs are up across the board, scholarship costs are up as tuition has risen in the last few years and will continue to do so and there are new athletic facilities to run and pay for on an on-going basis. I think someone mentioned that would be a $400,000 annual increase...not so fast there...that $400,000 only accounts for 200 scholarship athletes at $2,000 each per year...UNT carries more than 200 scholarship athletes as do most/all schools. While the $2000/yr. doesn't seem like much per person...it is a very large sum indeed when all eligible athletes are considered. So, where does it come from? I fully believe athletes earn every benefit they get, and am 100% in favor of an increased stipend, but just want to take all the "emotion" out of the discussion and see if there is some reality to the discussion and the situation. How does UNT "get there" for its well deserving athletes? Do we go back to "high school" level assistant coaches...or head coaches? Do we eliminate sports? Do we increase ticket prices? Do we charge students for game day tickets over the fees they already pay? Do we fire staffers? Increase parking and concession fees? Increase Mean Green Club level costs to the donors who are stepping up? Play more OCC "money games" against the likes of Alabama? Where do the funds come from? Sometimes ideas that are great on paper and beneficial, create some real challenges when folks try to put them into action. Suggestions and ideas welcome. Let's find a way to help these deserving athletes. Can we? Will we? Seriously ....really? Edit: I love this board...Really? Seriously? Let's have some discussion if you think what I have posted is so far off base as to warrant negative points...seriously?1 point

Looks like a certain stormfront follower on GMG could fit right in. Didn't we get past this with Texas Western about 45 years ago? I agree with the comment that ESPN's incessant showing of "highlight plays" is what's hurt team basketball at times. But there are plenty of examples of teams that play the right way that aren't private schools like Duke/Butler. How about Michigan State for instance. They are nearly always one of the best, most fundamentally coached teams in the land. Ever see the makeup of their roster?1 point

So the regular season title is only "mythical"? I mean if there's no NIT type tournament and the tournament winner gets the trophy, the regular season title is kinda pointless unless you take care of business in the Sun Belt tourney. I wish I could be there, but with the Rangers losing tonight my priorities start and end with them tomorrow night. Good luck to the girls tomorrow night! It's been awhile since we finished on top in soccer.1 point

This. Heckling can be intelligent and funny or dumb and classless. The Rice band does such an intelligent job of heckling the offending party can hardly get mad because it's done so well. I think of that as an example of good heckling. Doing nothing but throwing foul language to the opposing team isn't heckling. To me, that's just trying to pick a fight with someone you know can't fight you. Pathetic. I haven't sat in the student section in years so I guess I'm not sure what it sounds like now but I trust we can find ways to use Apogee to our advantage AND represent ourselves in a positive manner.1 point

"They're protesting corruption on Wall Street." See, I don't really buy this either. For most of these protestors, profit *is* the corruption. Profit is evil. Private ownership of industry is wrong. Anyone who makes money on things like energy, or health care, or whatever is an evil prick without a heart. To say they are protesting corruption on Wall Street is too simple and innocuous, shielding the motives of many (not all) of the protestors. Those motives are to socialize/nationalize much of the country's top industries. Are there problems on Wall Street? Sure, but they are not fundamental problems that can only be resolved by turning the capitalist system on its head. In capitalism or communism, someone at the top is going to steal money just because they can. Someone with a lot of money is going to have influence in the government, not necessarily because they are buying influence but the fact that their status as a leader of industry with thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of full-time employees and business and social contacts make that person one who can easily pick up a phone and ask their admin assistant to "get me the Senator." And that is going to happen in a capitalist society, a fascist society, a communist society, or a meritocratic society. Given a choice... I'll take corruption and influence in a capitalist society than any of the others. But Wall Street isn't "cheating" they are playing by the rules laid out by politicians... politicians who know the American people have a low tolerance for bad economic news. If the economy or the government budget problems can't be fixed in 6-8 weeks, we'll vote you out!!! So politicians have created an atmosphere where banks and business can artificially inflate profits or obtain massive interest-free loans or get government bailout money, ensuring they can go back home in campaign seson and talk about how he did all he could to get the economy back on track. But that is not a creation of Wall Street... that was created by the people on Capitol Street. The Greenich Villagers are raising their torches and pitchforks at the monster, when they should be seeking its creator.1 point

One of my personal favorite heckling victims are the trainers. I got a ULM trainer to completely lose it. I kept on telling her that it was her fault that the team was losing and stuff like that. I love getting into the trainers, coaches, and support staff's head. When I was in the GB at Fouts, during the march around the track I would heckle the coaches and players. We were like 10 yards from them! It was awesome. But Apogee is way better for in-game-heckling. I take personal pride in never having sworn during my heckling. I'm not against swearing- but I love cleverly heckling with out using swearing as a tool. I also love heckling so intensley that even the event staff and police in the area have to laugh at it. It's one of my favorite parts of the game.1 point
