  3. Any time the University needs people to show up for anything, they go to the Greeks. It's true. It's the most accessible, largest group on campus. And there are tons of things every week that members are expected to do, that are made mandatory "for the best interest of the University." Hell, we had mandatory basketball games when we were in school, because the basketball team couldnt get anyone out. Who do you think made all those massive floats for the parade? Who do you think PAID for them? That stuff takes countless hours on top of every other responsibility people have (and as someone who spent three weeks doing it one year, it totally sucks), it doesn't just happen. I get the "yall can do better" card, but there sure seems to be very little grace and a whole lot of grief handed out on this board over the fact that a handful of people, on a day when a lot of people came out to tailgate to spend time with friends and family, elected to keep the party going on the hill in advance of the Rangers game instead of watching a then 2-5 team. I think they all missed a terrific time in the stadium (I had a BLAST) but that's their deal. Once this team starts winning and doing so consistently, all of this will be resolved. Until then, why get all snarky with other members? I bet there are as many Greek-affiliated members as non-Greek on this board. Why be dicks to each other by making stupid generalizations?

  5. Please don't. That was clever when I heard it as an 18 year old, but it's tired now and you should get over the fact that "frat" is simply common nomenclature and is not meant offensively by most. Agreed. Greeks make up no more than 10% of campus population and there is no reason a school with a 35K enrollment shouldn't be selling out 10K student seats. However you need to realize how the ire of some of these old, crotchety alumni is aimed at the Greek system considering the Hill is directly opposite their side of the field...and so is a 1/2 filled student section. IFC needs to be pro-active here and get SOME (I'm not saying all, I know many could care less about sports and are at the tail gate simply for the atmosphere) of those on the Hill into the game. Again true...however once you put those letters on you are immediately identifiable and as such held to a higher standard. That was something we stressed immensely when I was on IFC. It's not "discrimination"(good lord)...it's simple logic. This is one of the dumber things I've read in this week of Greek-themed threads...and that may well be meant as a compliment considering it means you won a pretty fierce competition of stupidity. If you're Greek at North Texas you know you're in a rather severe minority, especially for a large, public school. As such, you can not pit yourself against the rest of the campus population...another issue I personally took upon myself to improve when I served on IFC. The onus (the anus?) is on YOU and the entire Greek community to change perception...and from everything I've read from you and a few other posters coming to the defense of the Greek system, you're doing rather a lousy job. The attitude you need to have is that you spend weeks preparing for Homecoming FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY, not for your fraternity. Your alumni come back FOR THEIR UNIVERSITY...having fraternity is simply a bonus. And...as unfair as some of the criticism aimed at the Greek community may be...IFC, PanHellinic and every individual Greek organization needs to respond to this criticism not by raring up in a corner like a wounded badger, but by efforting to get more Greeks into the game...again...FOR THE UNIVERSITY.

  6. It is just amazing to me that some on here criticize the fraternities and sororities for tailgating, not coming into the games and drinking, yet the same people that are highly critical are also the one's bragging about yelling obscenities in the stands, wanting to buy beer in the stadium, etc... Take away the Greek organizations and you basically would have a Homecoming parade consisting of the band, cheerleaders, dancers and a bunch of cars with people riding in the back. Take away the Greek organizations and many alumni don't receive an invitation to come back to campus. I am an alumni of Sigma Chi, and I can tell you that we put countless hours into Homecoming and other campus events, participate in other organizations and are typically recruited by the university when attendance is needed. Greeks are also highly visible and come under increased scrutiny from the university concerning their conduct. We also have to maintain a certain GPA to remain active individually and as an organization. I don't agree with the stereotyping of the members of the Greek organizations. Are their some that match this stereotype? Sure, but many do not. In fact, many of you that badmouth the Greeks would probably be surprised at the number of people you have met that were a part of a fraternity or sorority at one time. I didn't much care for the "music/artsy" types in college but I have an appreciation for what they do and the contributions they make to the university and to our game days. I'm just not cut out for those activities, but I can appreciate them and look past the stereotypes. I wish some on here would do that. I'm sorry if you have had a bad personal experience with a Greek organization, but I would welcome you to stop by and tailgate with me in the future and hopefully let me change your opinion.

  8. I guess for me, I don't see the point of going through all of that effort and expense to set up a tailgate party, tents, greek letters, etc. and then spend the game sitting on The Hill. The Greeks have a better opportunity to promote their organizations from INSIDE the game rather than outside. Two home games left, I challenge the fraternities and sororities to show what they can do in terms of oraganization and spirit. Carry in signs with your greek letters. Have a spirit competition in the stands. Have a contest on the number of members you can get in the seats. Hey, how about a classic prank? http://sportsillustr...college.pranks/ I applaud the efforts of the Greeks during Homecoming week. But don't come on a sports discussion board and ask "Isn't that enough? Isn't it enough that we made it to gates of the stadium?" Because it's not. It's not only pointless, it's disrespectful to the team, the coaches, the cheerleaders, the dancers, and the fans to plant your flag on The Hill and declare that you will come no closer. And I get that this happens at other universities, but those other universities do not typically have 15,000 empty seats. Get your asses in the game, and get in on time.

  10. We play ASU this Saturday in case anyone forgot. It is wednesday afternoon and evertime i come to this site to catch up on the latest injury updates or to see what ya'll think needs to happen to give our Mean Green the best chance to win I see the latest topics still talking about irrelevant stuff. Lets talk some football! We need to continue our passing game to give Dunbar a chance to produce. Our D needs to keep doing what its doing and if we execute we could win out and go bowling. Its a great time to be a Mean Green fan! GMG

  11. I sat in the club level on Saturday with 6 or so old Fraternity buddies. When I talk with other alums on game day I am always suprised to find how many were in Fraternities. What do the players touch for good luck before they run out onto the field? A Bronze Eagle given to the school by a Fraternity. When I graduated from UNT in 97 less than 5% of the school was in a Fraternity. I believe those numbers hold true today. Yet I guarantee you more than 5% of those that make it into the game on any given Saturday are either currently or previously affiliated with a Fraternity. I think many on here should tap the breaks a little before spewing such hatred toward a group that participates in greater percentages than the rest of the student body. The handful of students that would rather drink beer and chase the opposite sex around the hill (does not sound so bad now) do not represent the group as a whole. Nor do they deserve your ire as much as the one hundred thousand plus alumni in the DFW area that make no attempt what so ever to show any pride in their University much less give back. According to this board it is more of a crime to get close to the stadium and not come in as opposed to sitting at home watching the Texas game.

  13. This, this, and more this. I don't get the fixation that some folks here have with tailgaters, particularly with Greek tailgaters. I hate beating this point to death, but y'all need to realize this past weekend was Homecoming. A whole lot of organizations, Greek and otherwise (like mine), have their Homecoming tailgate as the centerpiece of their Homecoming activity. It's the one time of the year a lot of folks get together. Having the university police chasing the alumni who care enough to come back to visit with their friends out of the tailgate areas on Homecoming is beyond stupid. It's clown shoes and an absolute P.R. disaster. You want to guarantee that the crappy attitudes towards the football program and athletics in general among alums continue? Then by all means go ahead and have police run alums off school property during Homecoming. We should be doing everything we can to encourage people to come to the game for positive reasons. This isn't the 19th century British Royal Navy; we don't need to be dragooning people into their seats. Our tailgate shut down during the game and we all went in and enjoyed the best Homecoming game I've seen in years. Our folks from Honduras and our folks from Austin and those of us who are local had a great time. When we play more games like that one, people will want to come in. That ought to be the goal, not trying to figure out every way possible to run tailgaters off.

  15. Wow...you just keep out-doing yourself...I take back my statement that your prior post was the dumbest thing I've read...THIS tops it 10-fold. How does the university (not this board of a small faction of nutty alumni, but the university itself) beat on the Greeks? Is it by providing land AND funding help expand fraternity row and to build sorority row (that's right, that was probably always a given in your time at UNT)? Any time the university has cracked down on the Greek system its been because the Greek system grossly embarrassed themselves...and as such the university. Additionally, you wouldn't have had your Greek experience without your university...and if you took more from memorizing Robert's Rules of Order while serving as your fraternity's athletic chair than you did in your actual academic experience I feel ridiculously sorry for you.

  17. Probably doesn't support the case much when one shows frat members actually in the stadium in support of their team if you are trying to "shout down" the idea that UNT frats party at tailgate but never make it in the stadium. Don't see the logic in that approach. Frats can be a fantastic support system for school spirit. I have seen it time and time again at numerous universities across the nation. They also, as members, do more public service work in their communities than many seem to realize. So, for all the "bad" some see, I can see just as much "good". That being said, UNT as a university administration has NEVER embraced the Greek System on campus and that has, in part, led us to where we are today with our Greek system. The Greeks have had to "fight" a complacent and often, hostile, administrative system at UNT. On the other hand, they often did everything they could to hurt their own cause. It has been a mutual "dislike" society for a long long time at UNT. The administration sees the Greeks as pests and trouble makers and the Greek see the administration as anti-Greek and go out of their way to make that perception a reality. Really, a no win situation for anyone. If the Greeks would decide as a whole to start supporting the administration and acting a bit more "responsible", the administration would soon enough come around and embrace the Greeks for the great benefit they can be for student life and what they definitely ARE at many of our university campuses around the country. Acting as they have the last game or two at Apogee and then not actually attending the games, does their image no good whatsoever. They probably know that, but also probably don't care. It's all about themselves and the fun of it, right? While many may come back the next morning to clean up the mess, that is done "after the fact" and after the image damage has been done...no one sees this side of the coin. Too bad, but as one other posted said...PERCEPTION IS REALITY. I am a big supporter of the Greek system and the benefits it can and does have within the life of a college campus. At this point, UNT's Greeks are still seen as immature college students just caring only about the next party and their next adventure giving no care whatsoever to those around them or the image they are creating or, in fact, their university. That's a shame. It would be pretty easy to change that perception, but it would take a concerted effort and some maturity to do so. It's a choice plain and simple. If you want respect, earn it. I hope UNT's Greek system grows stronger and stronger as it can only help...IF the Greeks themselves take it upon themselves to be part of the university and not "outsiders". I wish them well, and I hope to see even more Greeks having a great tailgate experience AND then marching into Apogee to support their team and their university. It's actually part of what the Greek system is supposed to be all about. I think some may have forgotten.

  19. Going to other message boards and flooding it with UNT info makes us look like the desperate fat girl at a party that will go home with anyone. It only annoys other boards when outsiders come to their turf. Most people here told TXST posters to shove it when they came here talking about their stadium. I like reading other boards to see what they think, but when you saturate it with a bunch of UNT bias it ruins the point. Especially, when it's a poll.

  24. Sweet mercy, let this Greek bashing end. Move on. We get it, you all want every single person affiliated with UNT in any capacity to attend all football games as if the life of the program depends on it. So you single out a very visible fraction, and vilify them. Simply having them setup on the hill adds to the pregame atmosphere as you walk into and around the stadium. If you don't agree with that, you're fooling yourself. Get people out to the festivities around gameday, and hopefully they'll have enough fun to want to come back and bring friends with them. The more people we get out to the pregame, the more people we'll get to come into the stadium. We're never going to get them all, but we'll get a lot of them. You guys can't see the forest for the tress.

  25. I want everyone to realize that we are talking about LESS THAN 1,300 students when we talk about the NT Greeks. How many students attend this school? How many people does this stadium hold? Fact is, we're talking about less than 4.5% of the student population and if every last one of them show up, it would make up about 4% of the stadium. http://greeklife.unt.edu/sites/default/files/pdf/greek%20report/greek_report_form_sp11.pdf We are all preaching to the choir here. WE are the active ones. All of us. Some of us were/are Greek and some of us are not. We have larger issues than the Greeks not attending games.

  26. Why are we blaming the greeks about only 10k students are showing up? Do you really think that students are turned off by rowdy drinking and occasional profanity and deciding to not go to the stadium? Turn off your naivety, brah. Better yet, if your brother in law gets a speeding ticket, obviously, its your fault because you're affiliated with your brother in law.

  28. As SUMG reminded me Saturday how drex back in the day let all the frats paint their logos into the concrete at Fouts and that area was where they sat. It was a good idea that worked. Certainly, we cannot do that at Apogee but what about an investment of chairbacks for each frat (in their frat colors) which can be placed in the upper Student Section a few hours before the game whiich would be "their" spot for the game. Any other ideas?

  29. WOW! I figured GMG would be full of a bunch of people talking about how THIS IS THE WORST THING EVER and North Texas fans should be all polite, never curse, drink, yell at opposing punters, don't rush the field, and do proper "NORTH TEXAS" fans because there are kids around but also to show that UNT is a righteous and upstanding college like Oxford. Oh, and act like Nebraska. What a high aspiration we have. This forum...

  31. Mods, move this if you must, but this team deserves to have the word spread about their game even on the football board. Friday @ 7pm at the Soccer Complex, NT will play Denver for the regular season championship, winner take all. These sorts of games do not come around very often, and I personally cannot remember one on this campus since the bowl years for football. We need a huge crowd for this game, so if any of you all can make it, please do. I think this crowd will probably get close to the record attendance (1246) set against SMU ealier this year for a 2-1 victory. Go Mean Green! North Texas vs. Denver Friday, Oct. 28th at 7pm Mean Green Soccer Complex Game Winner wins the SBC Championship. EDIT: Here is a link to the Facebook event - Link to Facebook

Okay, Coach Mac, for the rest of us West Virginians, tell us what those UNT traditions are?" My point isn't that we aren't without traditions; it's that how many outside Mean Green Nation know our traditions?
