  1. Few universities, if any, can claim they have a 1500lb motorized spirit bell like the one the Swartz Family built for North Texas to use several years back, returning to campus a long standing tradition that had been absent for many years when the original Spirit Bell used at the games had to be retired. It took them many years of searching to find the exact kind of Bell. Once found they mounted it onto a custom vehicle that could handle the load. But due to neglect of it's caretakers on campus the past recent years the Mean Green Spirit Bell hasn't been seen at games for at least a couple of years if not longer. That's why we owe a big time thank you to alumnus Eric "SoundManEric" Becker for taking the initiative on his own and spending his resources to retrieve by trailer, fix, repair and return again by trailer one of our oldest traditions we have left on campus. I have known Eric for many years and I have to say he has an honorable quality that I greatly respect in a person. When he say's he's going to do something, by God he does it. There's no messing around with Eric when it comes to accomplishing something, and those of you who know him know exactly what I mean. He has helped me and many others here at GMG.com over the years with projects ranging from the big "Feed The Masses" barbecues that spanned from Denton to Murfreesboro Tennessee, to designing and creating the graphics for Boomers' Limber. He's just one of those incredible guys that, as you can see from his Mean Green Christmas show last year, accomplishes everything he sets out to do. I'm not sure there's much he can't do really? But he's done a hell of a lot for us all that's for sure. And I can tell you this was not an easy project for him to pull off due to the enormous weight and size of the Bell and the tug that it's mounted on and the tug's operating system. Often times his efforts may have gone unnoticed. So I just wanted to let everyone know how fortunate we are to have such an alumn that cares for this school, it's program and it's traditions as much as he does and thank him for his latest efforts. 2. Sat and watched UNT win a football game in dominating fashion yesterday. I could not be happier for the team. I have watched what it has gone through for the last several years. I have to say, the changes that have been made are outstanding. You have a beautiful new stadium. A real college football coaching staff and players who have totally bought into the system and want to play football for UNT. Now to you on this board. All I have seen today is people bitching about stuff. No where to nurse a child, ATM machines, hotdogs vs hamburgers..., Frats in the parking lots. Walking from Fouts. Ya'll don't even know what a good football discussion board is supposed to be. Yes, this is my first post but I have followed this board and many other boards for a long time, both high school and college. This is anything but a football board. I challange all of you to make the change like the football team has. Start talking football.. Take the other topics somewhere else. If it isn't football related, it isn't worth discussing.

  3. I'll get this going. Yes, we have posts "complaining" about some aspect of the stadium. Those posts probably should be in the Apogee Stadium forum and a moderator could move them if they wish. But they are valid points and this is the best place for folks to get quick answers. But if you're going to complain about a lack of football talk then talk football! Complaining about complaining is not football talk. Really ... how can someone making their first post complain about a lack of football posts from others?

  4. I love heckling the opposing team and using colorful language, but I hate the m'fing eagles thing. I never do it, but it has gotten louder this year. To me it's insulting your own school and needs to stop. The student section should be a rowdy and dirty place, but let's not deface our fight song...please.

  5. Mods, move this if you must, but this team deserves to have the word spread about their game even on the football board. Friday @ 7pm at the Soccer Complex, NT will play Denver for the regular season championship, winner take all. These sorts of games do not come around very often, and I personally cannot remember one on this campus since the bowl years for football. We need a huge crowd for this game, so if any of you all can make it, please do. I think this crowd will probably get close to the record attendance (1246) set against SMU ealier this year for a 2-1 victory. Go Mean Green! North Texas vs. Denver Friday, Oct. 28th at 7pm Mean Green Soccer Complex Game Winner wins the SBC Championship. EDIT: Here is a link to the Facebook event - Link to Facebook

  6. We are fortunate to have Rick and Eric and some of the other folks who have MADE TIME (something I can't say I've always done) to go the extra mile for our University. Their efforts should not go over-looked. I don't want to Bash the Talons and I won't - but the University/Athletic Department should make maintaining our traditions a Priority. When we DO have the shoestring budget we've had for years at UNT, the things that are donated, restored or fixed out of the goodness of someone's heart and their love for the University, they should be protected and the UNIVERSITY, not a student organization should be responsible and thus held accountable for their maintenance and condition. Thanks to Rick, Boomer is an amazing piece that every UNT fan can take pride in, yet Rick is called upon over and over and over to fix it... not because it requires maintenance and repair from time to time as a result of proper use, but usually because someone has damaged something due to mis-use. Eric here has restored the bell - but how long will this hard work be a shining symbol of UNT without some sort of oversight. ...and don't get me started on the Model A. That's a piece of automotive history for starters, and without the ties it has to UNT, its allowed deterioration is criminal... but now combine that with the fact that it is a symbol of OUR SCHOOL and has been abused and is in shambles. Truly a shame. I try not to complain much about our Administration and the AD, as they have brought our athletic programs to places many of us have only dreamed possible, particularly in the past few years - but this is a MAJOR failure of both the University Administration and by extension the Athletic Department, and I hope now that some of the BIG stuff has been taken care of, maybe we can finally focus on some details at UNT.

  7. If the people who complain about the lack of football posts on here were actually capable of talking football, they would just do it. They just have the passive "guy listening to sports talk radio" mentality where they need someone else to tee up an opinion for them so they can react and feel knowledgeable. Defense played great on Saturday. What can they do to get better, guys? Has Thompson taken the next step in his development? How's the back up QB race going? Still corrupt and offensive to god and nature? I'll hang up and listen.

  8. As a UNT parent I am a relative newcomer to Mean Green Nation (4th year). I love the campus and the things UNT has to offer to students and actively recruit UNT grads for the company I work for and will continue to do so. Yesterday was my first visit to Apogee (1st game I could make due to health issues) and I was very impressed with the facilities. Even the walk from Fouts wasn't bad (I got my walking exercise in!). We sat in the student section and they were great, especially on defensive 3rd downs. They were into it the whole game, which compared to the first game we attended at Fouts 4 years ago was a change, and they will continue to make a difference. We didn't get to tailgate due to conflicts causing us to get to Denton after 3:00 but I can see where it is a good game day atmosphere and will only get better. Looking forward to making at least one of the remaining two home games and getting there early enough to partake in the tailgate experience. As far as the change in the football being played at UNT, and its already been mentioned on previous posts, the defensive intensity certainly stands out to me. I was at last year's the ULM game and we made Browning look all world then and this year he was pedestrian (for the most part). Consistent pressure on the QB and punishing receivers is the difference. That and flying to the ball. I was at the K-State game last year and the offense finally seemed to get untracked and deliver the kind of exciting plays everyone expected them to deliver early on this year. I thought it could have been an easier time if Moe, Larry & Curly hadn't been part of the referee crew (Missed PI calls & the roughing the kicker was ludicrous) but I digress. Will there continue to be hiccups along the road? Sure there will (ask OU or Wisconsin). But stay positive Mean Green Nation. This coaching staff is the real deal and will get this program over the hump. UNT has too much to offer. PS: Can't wait for basketball season either! GMG!

  9. Heckling the visiting team: Yes - they should expect it. Heckling the visiting team's fans: NO! I'd prefer for us to be like ULL, not LSU.

  11. UT is famous for being one of the worst home field advantages in the BCS.They're quiet, come late, and leave early. They're routinely called out on TV broadcasts for being silent and disinterested. Nebraska, meanwhile, is routinely considered one of the best home field advantages in the BCS. They're polite, cheer the other team on and off the field, and make visitors feel at home. They also love and cheer like crazy for their Huskers. Let's be tiny Nebraska, because they're better humans.

  12. Dude, get over it. It has very little to do with being family friendly and everything to do with representing your university correctly. Adding obscenities to the fight song is trashy and is an embarrassment to the university and its fans. I really hope you are just trolling because otherwise I have very little faith in the future of our fanbase if others are taking your cue.

  13. I came into town on Wednesday and just got back to my apartment in Los Angeles. Obviously it was nice to see the homeland, and I wish I had more time as is usually the case. It was great to see a lot of old friends and folks I've met on the board (sorry I didn't get to see more of you). While I'm not sure the new stadium is the greatest thing ever like some of yall maintain, I was very impressed. The tailgating sorta reminded me of UCLA (the Rose Bowl is also located on a golf course). Thanks to MeanMag for my front row ticket. The team looked very impressive, especially the defense. We really swarmed to the ball as well as I have seen in...five years? There is little doubt within another year or two we'll be competing for the Belt title (if we're still in it anyways). Highlight of the weekend? Probably the surprise appearance of Josh White 3 rows behind us, and getting to shake his hand. Anyways, looking forward to December when I get to see some more NT stuff live.

  14. Three Things That Need to Stop Right Now Injecting "MF" into the fight song: Anyone who has met me in real life knows that my use of curse words can reasonably be describe as both excessive and inventive. However, there is a time and place for everything. The fight song for your school isn't one of them. Unless your alma mater is an Arkansas truck driving school. Lets try and keep it classy.Chanting "B*** S***" at the refs: First, see my comments above. Second, angering people whose subjective calls can make the difference between happily drinking in the parking lot and sadly, mopingly drinking in the parking lot is not a good idea.Guys wearing capri pants: Seriously, what is wrong with you. Three Things That Should Continue Forever Heckling the opposing team: This is where your vitriol should be unleashed. Make noise when they are on offense, make fun of their haircuts, names, and imagined ugly girl friends when they are on the bench. Note: If they actually have an ugly girl friend, then making fun of them is just considered unnecessary roughness. Taunt wisely.Coming inside the stadium: Yes, there is beer outside, it will wait for you.Diora Baird: Nothing to do with Mean Green football, but my feelings on this are strong.

  15. Football board? This isn't a football board. This is a group (and often very public) therapy session for Mean Green-aholics. I think you might be looking for The Eagles Nest. You know you're a Mean Green-aholic when the first thing you check in the box score, no second....alright the first...is the official attendance for North Texas home games. Then for some odd reason you check the attendance for SMU (liars) followed closely by other Sun Belt teams. Come on now. Admitting it is the first step toward recovery. Hi, I'm Keith.

  19. None of us parents expect you to understand how we cringe when F-bombs or other curse words are yelled out, you are in college with no kids. We were once in college with no kids and heard the same things. The student section is awesome with it's intensity and energy. It just does not benefit anyone to ruin the fight song with curse words. Be as loud as you want and that is certainly encouraged...just please represent your University in a positive manner.

  20. When I was a student, I often found myself longing for some alum in his mid-thirties to tell me how to cheer for my team. Weird everyone seems just to be blowing this off. *I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I'm just saying this approach is not likely to work.

  22. Can we start laying off the Dodge recruits somewhat, they appear to be playing just fine, if you want to say Dodge could not get the best out the players so be it, but tiresome now to say how bad the players he recruited are when he had a couple of the highest classes that UNT has seen, sucks so many did not pan out. Outside of the OL these are Dodge recruits who are starting to gel. Not fair to the players to say they are horrible all the time.

  25. This is the greatest college sports message board/forum/blog/podcast in the COUNTRY! Period! Why? Because it is not a sub-board on some sports website like the rest of the conference uses. It is not in competition with 100 other message boards, like the hundreds of copycats for Texas or Ohio State. Most of us here personally know some or most of the other members. It is run by hard-core fans of this university who are constantly trying to make the board better. All hail Harry and Evan.

  33. Not sure who you are RJ, but it's becoming very clear to me that you're immature and lack knowledge about football. Having been to Nebraska, I can say that they are by far the nicest people in college football. They're regarded nation-wide as having the best, most-knowledgeable fans in college football. When I was there, I didn't hear a single curse word. And yes, Nebraska is a tough place to play considering they had a home win streak that lasted 8 years. Show some class. Yelling cuss-words at the opposition is not going to have any more effect on the opponent than just yelling normally. It just makes you look like a douchebag. And really you're using Texas as your example? They got routed by freaking UCLA last year. They have the worst, most bandwagon fan base in college football. They're a joke. If you're taking fan lessons from the douchebags down in Austin, you need to look elsewhere.

  34. No you're not. If you were, you wouldn't have said "hell no I won't buy tickets on the alumni side", you would be saying "hell yes I will be over there, and be helping to fix the problem, not add to it".

  37. I yell and scream as much as the next fan. Curse words might leave spew from my mouth subconsciously and sporadically... But to claim that you can't create an intimidating environment, or that nonstop cursing makes an environment any more intimidating is just stupid. An intimidating environment needs to be loud not vulgar.

  42. Doesn't work like that. It rattles them and often leads to mistakes due to lack of focus. The more visiting players we have worrying about fans the better. Hopefully they will go out and get flagged for a personal foul. If you don't think this approach works for the home team go see a game at LSU.

  43. Why not have a half time Greek chariot race? Have them race wheelbarrows around the goal posts at each end of the field. Could be 3 laps with a new "horse and driver" change at each end. Might be funny and I bet it would get the Greeks and some other students into the stadium.

  47. I have always wondered why attendance at UNT games by the broader Denton community is seen as such a big deal. I'm a big sports fan but have never attended a Denton high school football game. I didn't go to an area high school, don't have kids who go to any of the schools, and don't really have any connection to the schools. For the high schools to draw a crowd, they have to draw fans like me from the wider community who are unconnected to the schools. UNT has over 35,000 students, thousands of faculty and staff, and hordes of alums in the DFW area. That should be enough to fill the student regardless of whether or not Joe Denton Fan decides to attend UNT games or not. I think that the key for UNT is to market to our students and turn them into passionate fans while they are students. That will keep them connected long after they graduate. I think that UNT has made big strides in this direction and I think that is the key to the future above all else.
