So you skipped camping on the hill for high school football? Who do you think needs you more?8 points

This kind of talk reminds me of a line from the movie Broadcast News: "Wouldn't this be a great world if insecurity and desperation made us more attractive? If needy were a turn-on?" I hope this isn't too blunt for the board, but people need to stop describing UNT as a pity f--k. That kind of talk isn't going to pack Apogee and it makes us look like the saddest FBS program in the country.3 points

The airshow is 10am-4pm. Is it too late to move our game up to 6am? I feel like we may be losing 5k if we play at 4pm. In all seriousness, getting some jets that are already in the area for a flyover would be a nice touch for homecoming.3 points

John Odoh, a 6-10 center who will play the upcoming season at Hill College, has orally committed to play for North Texas. Odoh, who visited UNT on Friday, backed out of a commitment to Southern Miss to join UNT's recruiting class. Oral commitments are non-binding. Odoh will have his first opportunity to sign with UNT during the early period this fall. Hill College head coach Swede Trenkle confirmed via text message early Saturday morning that Odoh has committed to UNT. Odoh played his freshman season at Lincoln Trail College in Illinois, where he averaged 9.7 points, eight rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game. DRC Click here to view the article2 points

I have always wondered why attendance at UNT games by the broader Denton community is seen as such a big deal. I'm a big sports fan but have never attended a Denton high school football game. I didn't go to an area high school, don't have kids who go to any of the schools, and don't really have any connection to the schools. For the high schools to draw a crowd, they have to draw fans like me from the wider community who are unconnected to the schools. UNT has over 35,000 students, thousands of faculty and staff, and hordes of alums in the DFW area. That should be enough to fill the student regardless of whether or not Joe Denton Fan decides to attend UNT games or not. I think that the key for UNT is to market to our students and turn them into passionate fans while they are students. That will keep them connected long after they graduate. I think that UNT has made big strides in this direction and I think that is the key to the future above all else.2 points

I am glad for SMU but the Big East is a weird conference. Watching those games tonight in Syracuse and Louisville were strange. I think SMU can go in and compete right away because it is AQ in name only. The atmosphere at Louisville reminded me of a cheesy UNLV football game with piped in music. They will benefit by being AQ and we will benefit after our invite to either CUSA or the MWC from either regional rivalries or name opponents. Exciting times ahead folks! I still think MWC might come knocking as soon as they get a feel for what Boise is going to do. I think Boise would benefit from joining the BE. It would be the program that gives the BE some teeth. I believe even more than what TCU would have done. Not a knock against TCU, but Boise is even more of a national darling. The Beginning is Near! GMG2 points

I realize your quip was for the Mean Green, but since Emmitt’s analogy was Denton supporting football programs then your statement of win and people will come is flawed. Denton Ryan has won 22 of its last 23 games their only loss during that span was the state championship game. They are winning but for some reason the fans are still not coming. They were completing with the UNT Homecoming activities maybe they should have moved the game up a couple of hours.2 points

The flaw with this thread is we're talking about high school football. I realize high school football is pretty popular in this state but not very many people want to go to a high school game unless they're out in the boonies and there's literally nothing else to do. And why should people have to come to the games unless they have an interest in the game such as their kids go to that hs or their kids are playing, cheerleading etc. It's just high school football for pete's sake.1 point

Many Call Him The AFL's First Super Star! (the late Lamar Hunt was said to have signed him in the south end zone of Fouts Field--Hunt's widow "Norma" is a UNT grad) Of course, that would be who many of us call friend, ie, the great Abner Haynes: Some of his honors below; *Time Magazine All American (main AA media vehicle of that era) *North Texas Sports Hall of Fame... *Texas Sports Hall of Fame... *Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Honor God let him be at Homecoming today at Apogee! If you meet Abner, you won't forget Abner! http://www.youtube.c...h?v=XH2TrUumi3k NOTE: Dr. Leon King was also part of the this African American duo who came to UNT in the mid 50's to the University of North Texas. Abner has told me and others some stories about that era that would curl your hair if your hair is straight--straighten your hair if its curly. (SUMG and I don't have much hair for either). God Bless the great Abner Haynes and Dr. Leon King! 2 Real Pioneers of the Civil Rights Movement (collegiately) In Texas Which Started At The University of North Texas--truth be known, it should have started in 1890 when our school was established. The problem with your argument is that you state that SMU is "the most overrated school in Texas" but your previous paragraphs contain nothing but opinion and conjecture. We need to worry about solving UNT's problems, not what other institutions are doing. Why must we have 2-4 SMU related threads on the UNT football forum front page at all times? Maybe we can just create a Green P1 SMU Memorial Forum to house these riveting debates. God I hate losing football seasons.1 point

Just about everyone has avoided the question, which is very simple. Who needs our support more? The Mean Green or a professional sports organization, (who has not bestowed a degree on you so you can make a living) and would move to another location if someone offered them enough money. The answer is really a no-brainer. For a bunch of (alleged) college graduates, you all really suck at logical thinking. OR, how about this. How many of you ever got a job because you own Ranger/Cowboy season tickets?1 point

Congratulations to SMU on their move to the Big East. I hope you have great success and I expect you will. I would rather Texas schools played Texas opponents in a Texas conference, but that ain't the way the game's played today. Kick butt. God bless Texas!1 point

Their facilities are good enough for conference USA. Their avg attendance is over 25,000. I don't think we are in any position to point and lol at anybody.1 point

Here's two better answers. If you have tickets to the Rangers and MG, go to whichever game you want and quit posting about it.Stop posting about it either way.1 point

This guy needs to run for President. CUSA and MWC need to forget about AQ and bowl games and need to set up the playoff system. The decision is real simple "show me the money" ! Be the first and others will follow . The bowl system and the NCAA are obsolete ! The days r numbered. GMG !1 point

Are you drunk right now? I'll go ahead and ignore the ridiculousness of this post and give reason one last shot. After that its full on smart ass. Look Rick...I said I'm sorry that you're inconvenienced and will miss a part of the game. I truly am. But the stance you're taking is essentially that you're upset that Rick Villareal didn't call you to see how this move affects you and your family's schedule personally..."hey Rick, it's Rick...so I'm thinking of bumping up the game time to 4PM...does that still gel with your plans? If not, we can just keep it at 6...whatever is best for you, buddy." The move is bigger than YOU...and it's bigger than any of the handful of fans on here who this inconveniences. The AD made what it felt was a pragmatic decision to maximizes attendance...and it did so knowing full well that it will negatively affect SOME plans, but is gambling on it positively affecting MORE plans. I doubt the move would've been made had the FAU game not also been up against a Ranger game and had such a poor showing. But there is now an established precedent for what attendance looks like in competition with a Rangers' playoff game. 13K for Homecoming in the 4th game of a new stadium would be highly embarrassing.1 point

This might be the best and most truthful post I've ever read on here. I agree 100%1 point
-
Yay...another personal anecdote. I'm sorry Rick, and every one else who has been sharing their own tales of woe...maybe the AD should personally consult you before every decision they make (I'm sure some of you would be wonderful recruiters)...but I don't see how anyone can look at the attendance at the FAU game and then not objectively understand UNT's place in the Metroplex pecking order. We're clearly an after-thought, even on campus...saying so doesn't make me less of a UNT homer (brought my lap-top to a friend's dinner party last week and was nearly 100% anti-social for the first 2 hours of the party). The AD and administration have to be pragmatic...the allure of a local World Series game right now is greater than that of a 2-5 football team. This move will bring more students. And while this move will apparently also inconvenience some Alumni, most of you on here know damn well you're gonna be in Denton at 10am and this will really only affect how drunk you get. Hell, maybe sobriety will help give the alumni side a bit more pep.1 point

A couple of comments: 1) There was not anywhere close to 13k people at that game. My estimate is 5k tops. 2) I agree that there were many big games going on yesterday that would have kept the people away (Rangers, OU/TX). I am sure that many people started drinking before noon yesterday. But to be honest I think one of the biggest reasons was because of who we were playing. I predict that the attendance for the rest of the home games will be around 14k or about triple what we saw last night. 3) We pulled out a win and everyone is happy about that but I think there is still some frustration about what happens to our defense in the 4th quarter. It would have felt great to shut out FAU and Indiana and continue to rack up the score...but instead what happens is you move to the edge of your seat because they are scoring in about 2 minutes with ease and in trying to run the ball we end up with back to back 3 and outs. With all that said we are now 2-4 and its feeling good.-1 points

What if you gave a damn for once about your own friends who have more family and responsibilities than you do, getting the ass end of this deal? Rick-1 points

Yay, another smartass dismissing of my concerns by another person who it doesn't affect one damn bit. Not because he's single without children who have games on saturdays and can change his schedule at a whim, even if the local paper previously repeating the athletic department saying the time wouldnt change, but because he lives on the east coast. Just great!!!! Rick-1 points

I take my vacation around this football schedule a year in advance and plan accordingly for every home game working family schedules so that we can make kickoff times. I've already missed one game and was late to another. Now I'll miss the first half of another because the kickoff was moved up and it's too late to make the necessary changes. It's just another example of a growing list in how little this athletic departmentt cares about it's loyal, investing customers, who hasn't seen more than three wins in a single year in 5 years, but who will be counted on to show up in November once the season is way out of hand. Sorry Mark, but I read through your other post as well and I'm not sold on all of your explanation that our two programs were that far apart in player talent. We beat a Big 10 team after all this year with Dodge's recruits, and Indiana nearly pulled off a win over Penn State the week after. Not sure we expected a complete turn around this year but North Texas did have two years to recruit players with the state's newest stadium as a recruiting tool. We didn't win very much last year but were not all that far from being GOOD either, and were actually COMPETITIVE with Dodges' recruits, who like your's and ULL's, were all recruited at the SUN BELT LEVEL. With Dodge We were a stupid celebration penalty and busted play from going in at half time tied with Clemson. Notice who's ranked 7th right now? A 1 point loss to Rice. A 4 point loss to FAU A 1 point loss to ULL And a 5 point loss to ASU After Dodge We won 2 of our last 5 games, including a win at bowl bound MTSU. A 6 point loss to Troy. And an 8 point loss to K State in which we had a decent lead in at one point and thought we were actually going to win it. Notice who's currently ranked 11th nationally? I'm not saying we were world beaters or anything. But that's being competitive with like recruits. So considering we had one of our most experienced secondary's returning with a nationally ranked RB for a much more experienced and funded coaching staff to build around many here thought we would at least be competitive, and I think we have been in some key areas? But back to the original reason for the thread. After it has been debated for years, and very recently here that it cannot be done, you guys and ULL and Brady Hoke at Michigan and Pete Lembo at Ball State(a team we beat only two years ago) are all proving this year that a new coach can, in the right situation, win with the previous guy's players. It happens every year somewhere. We were told here all Summer long, "Why Not North Texas", and many bought into it a bit. No one here expected this to be that RIGHT SITUATION for North Texas in 2011 to the level of what Ark State is experiencing. Most expected it to be a rebuilding year, and I think everyone is pleased so far with the improvements we have seen in some areas with the team and all love Coach Mac's spirit. I certainly didn't expect him to do what y'all have done. But at the same time I won't fault anyone here for thinking otherwise before the season started and being disappointed when we are down by 25 to FIU in the first quarter. Rick-1 points

I'll be at the UNT game, but by this logic...never go to a pro game and start skipping football and basketball games for other sports with lower attendance. Hell, let's get a charter flight to Florida for an August Marlins game while we're attending based on need. So damn sick of everyone trying to make the Rangers and Mean Green adversaries. It impacts two games in a rebuilding year. It will not change the future no matter what happens. Stop trying to do this...all of you. Do you think posting this is going to convert a casual fan on the fence or do you just enjoy trolling? If so, mission accomplished with me. See you tomorrow!-1 points

We get it super-fan, UNT over Rangers. I'm sorry, I don't understand how or why people can't have a "personal connection" to the Rangers? This argument or plea for people to pick a 2-5 UNT football team in a rebuliding year over a local sports franchise (for many a team they have been watching longer than they have been paying attention to UNT) on the verge of winning their first title EVER has become old and stale. We get it, you want people at them game like we all do, but the rangers in the world series in the words of joe biden, "is a big effing deal". Quit trying to draw a line in the sand and make people chose, it's one more weekend and all will be back to normal. I love UNT (I wear my UNT ring everyday with pride) but given the choice between tickets to the UNT game or tickets to the Rangers in the world series, I'm picking the Rangers, no question.-1 points

Their stadium is outdated. The second they built the thing it looked twenty years old. It's completely unimpressive, and has not been up kept well. Really? I don't see our football team writing angry columns into the Daily. We're also not 5-1 on the hinge of getting into an AQ conference. Say what you want about the Dickey years, if UNT was winning, we'd have 28K every game right now. Houston game proved this fan base is hankering for a winner. Ask anyone in Dallas about SMU's reputation. They have a horrible attitude and swagger. It's mostly people who go to SMU and their horrible attitude; self-righteousness, that gets them on the wrong side of people. They act like they are on the level of Rice or an Ivy League college, when SMU is purely a school flowing with plenty of money but on the same level as us. The D/FW metroplex has a way higher opinion of UNT grads than SMU grads. Hell, my first year at UNT I didn't even realize SMU was in the Metroplex. SMU is the most overrated school in Texas. Fact. I'd rather pay middle-level tuition for a mid-level college like UNT than pay upper-echelon tuition for a mid-level college like SMU.-1 points

Due to last evening's dramatic 9th inning come from behind win by the Rangers, I think some "added pressure" has been placed on attendance for Saturday's homecoming game at Apogee. So........... Just placing a bit of a different spin on this dilemma (at least a dilemma for some). Who needs you more Saturday? The Mean Green or the Rangers? Where would your presence have a greater impact on a team/s you say you support? Would the Rangers know or care? Would it hurt the Rangers attendance if you did not attend the Rangers game Saturday? What about skipping the Mean green game entirely to watch the Rangers on TV? Every fan in attendance is critical for the Mean Green in any number of ways...including, perhaps, a new conference alignment, the potential signing of a new football (or basketball, etc.) recruit, the wooing of a new or current big time donor, building a tradition of support...and, really, in helping the Mean Green actually have a home field advantage. Seems to me that the Rangers will have a full house no matter what. Where would your attendance matter the most? I know the answer for me personally, it's a no brain-er, but for some it is not so easy. so, I just ask...where are you needed the most? Just a bit of a different spin on the same question. Only you can answer that question.-1 points
-
Come on Quoner...you know very well that this has ZERO to do with "chartering jets to fly to Florida"...you "fail" on that one. I don't believe you graduated from the University of the Marlins or have any personal connection. Really? Is that the best you could do in response? I'll give you another try if you would like. And, it's not Mean Green vs Rangers...it's asking where one's priority is for one game where attendance actually matters for one team and well, not so much for the other. No, I am not trying to "convert a casual fan". I dare say, there are few/no casual fans on GMG.Com. In all your "sickness" about it you felt compelled to respond...interesting. Why even reply if you think this is trolling? I'll just sit back a await the start of your next thread with anxious heart beating as I am sure it will be so very thought provoking. Hope you feel better soon.-2 points

As much as it pains me to say it, being a native Dentonite, I don't think Denton will always be a non-supportive city. I'm sitting here at the Denton Ryan/Denton game and they're not coming out in droves for this game either. I'm talking to a nice lady who works here at C.H. Collins and she was just relating to me that this game doesn't often draw near what this stadium holds....in fact I bought a reserved seat on row 14 and she told me "just sit anywhere, nobody will be fighting over seats." As an aside she told me that Denton High doesn't like playing at C.H. Collins. Apparently they prefer to play at their on campus field. So this stadium that Denton was so hell-bent on building all for themselves...and not building cooperatively with North Texas...sits empty when DHS plays at home.-2 points
