I went to the student union, but found that they're only giving out tickets from 10-1, and I only have night classes! Now I'll have to WALK to the stadium ticket window, carrying the extra weight of my student ID card to the game! And I'll have to make that arduous journey two hours early! How can the AD be so insensitive to us students who invest so much of our hard borrowed money into this program via our duly elected student fee? I'm outraged! I haven't even received a personal letter from Coach McCarney this week! How else am I supposed to know how to express my school spirit without personal communication from the staff? I pay virtually NOTHING into this program! I demand to be heard!5 points

I'll be at the UNT game, but by this logic...never go to a pro game and start skipping football and basketball games for other sports with lower attendance. Hell, let's get a charter flight to Florida for an August Marlins game while we're attending based on need. So damn sick of everyone trying to make the Rangers and Mean Green adversaries. It impacts two games in a rebuilding year. It will not change the future no matter what happens. Stop trying to do this...all of you. Do you think posting this is going to convert a casual fan on the fence or do you just enjoy trolling? If so, mission accomplished with me. See you tomorrow!3 points

We get it super-fan, UNT over Rangers. I'm sorry, I don't understand how or why people can't have a "personal connection" to the Rangers? This argument or plea for people to pick a 2-5 UNT football team in a rebuliding year over a local sports franchise (for many a team they have been watching longer than they have been paying attention to UNT) on the verge of winning their first title EVER has become old and stale. We get it, you want people at them game like we all do, but the rangers in the world series in the words of joe biden, "is a big effing deal". Quit trying to draw a line in the sand and make people chose, it's one more weekend and all will be back to normal. I love UNT (I wear my UNT ring everyday with pride) but given the choice between tickets to the UNT game or tickets to the Rangers in the world series, I'm picking the Rangers, no question.2 points

Yeah, I wasn't really conscious of any Texas schools growing up. Didn't register with me on sports or academics. I'd heard of SMU, knew of the Longhorns because Chris Simms was on some magazine cover, and Texas Tech when Bobby Knight went there. But I had no idea where any of the aforementioned schools were located, what their mascots were, if they were good schools or good athletic programs. Nothing. It just didn't register. So, to this thing of these conferences spanning from sea to shining sea, and national recognition blah blah blah. It's strange to me. I would much rather watch Cal North Texas play Stanford SMU, or to a lesser extent, San Diego St. Texas St play Fresno Sam Houston, than I would watch Cal North Texas play Syracuse or San Diego St Texas St. play ECU. I'm sure that somehow, it'll force the television revenue to increase, but it'll make me personally even less interested. Edited because THIS IS A NORTH TEXAS BOARD!2 points

I'm sure he's talking about academics, which I'd have to agree with. I grew up in California/Canada but was well aware of Rice's academics. SMU? Not so much.2 points

and all this for membership in CUSA.... Yes,, quite a bit beyond what we would ordinarily do in Denton, but if we don't get pro-active we will see other schools pass us by, folks, and we don't need that to happen to us anymore. Tell CUSA Commish' Banowosky to move a CUSA sponsored bowl game to Apogee with promise that there will be a: Denton County Bowl Association to be its main sponsor and seeker of a corporate sponsor, advertising, etc, etc, etc. Friday Addendum: Hellsbells! Tell CUSA Commish' Brit Banowsky we will even expand Apogee Stadium another 9,000 seats to get her up to.... 40,000 seat capacity... if that is what it takes? PS: SMU had the audacity to seek Big 12 membership through the media, so why would any of this be so outside the box for us? It would make more sense than SMU's Big 12 pipe dream. GMG!2 points

Alright, I typically avoid posting in threads regarding UNT/SMU due to a minor conflict of interest, but I could'nt resist. My mother is a contributing alumni at SMU and my brother played basketball there as well. I decided on UNT (on my mothers advice) because unlike most I went to the school with the best program for my professional field. My goal was to work for one of the big 4 acct. firms(acheived, mother knows best!), and ironically enough UNT has one of the better acct/auditing programs in the country. Having said that, outside of the state of Texas UNT and SMU are essentially irrelavent. As far as the national recognition game goes its a short list in Texas.. 1.)UT 2.)Rice 3.)A&M It's comical some of the statements that a select pool of SMU grads./students make, those poor souls are sadly disillustioned. If your rich, smart and from Dallas; your ass better be at UT. Elitist attitudes are strictly reserved for the three aforementioned institutions of higher learning. Mature SMU alums understand these points, trust me. As far as conference realignment goes, UNT will get an invite from a larger conference winning or losing; Dallas is a strong market not to be overlooked. I wish the best for both SMU and UNT, both programs are doing great things. Should be interesting when we meet on the schedule.2 points

Yet we have a basketball tourney where the #1 seed gets the same dollars for showing up as the last team in. Of course #1 usually ends up making a lot more because they end up playing more than one game.1 point

Hey, sorry to reply to my own post but, a couple of things: 1. "The" Weather Underground was a radical movement that in the late 60's and early 70's was active in attempts to overthrow the U.S. Government by force. Since I was in the U.S. Army at one time, I took an oath (still in effect, as far as I know) never to engage in such activities. On the other hand "the" Weather Underground" is a site that came online in the early 90's, and remains active in getting more and better weather forecasting out to Internet users. I suppose it's ironic that they do so by selling advertising, or charging fees for those want it advertising free. 2. Things are now starting to look more favorable for rain at game time, but on a positive note, it gets more likely later in the evening, making the kickoff time change look better than it may have previously.1 point

The envy runs rampant with you all in regard to UNT--you guys are obsessed with anything that UNT does or says. You guys should NEVER post on UNT unless you're playing them...and the "insight"/knowledge you think you possess is asinine and if you want to talk about fan support--try selling out your own stadium--welcome to "APATHY" U. Let the negative responses commence... but, if you're a realist and are honest with yourselves you'll understand that this post is 100% true. Worry about your team and get the CHIP(s) off of your shoulder. I fixed the spelling while I was at it.1 point

I just did a 5 minute check of other programs in our region and there posted game times. Do these fan bases bitch as much as we do about game times? From past experience with being a season ticket holder at Arkansas and LSU (because of work relocation) game times are announced a week in advance. SMU: 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA 11/26 TBA Baylor: 11/5 TBA (Homecoming) 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA 12/3 TBA Texas: 11/5 TBA 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA 12/3 TBA LSU: 11/5 TBA 11/12 TBA (Homecoming) 11/19 TBA UL Monroe: 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA 12/3 TBA Ark. ST: 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA We should thank our AD department for trying to give us the ability to plan ahead. Time change for only 1 week in 12 (or 6) is pretty good by my account.1 point

Why is it necessarily troubling? Our admission standards are slightly higher than theirs and we have a higher graduation rate. Being LARGE doesn't mean GOOD. If you mean troubling in terms of their appeal versus ours in attracting students then I would focus more on the number of applicants annually at each school and the number we turn away compared to them. I'm pretty sure we have them beat there although it may be a slight edge. I'd much rather see us raise standards, attain a more qualified student body, and increase our national ranking than just be bigger than someone.1 point

Just got done watching video on Monroe this year (paid a month's subscription to their Warhawk On Demand or whatever it is), and I think that this game is going to hinge on their defense. They're not big size-wise, but they swarm the ball and are excellent tacklers. Like most other weeks, so goes the running game, so goes our game plan. I think their D leaves them exceptionally vulnerable to play action, but in order to have legit play action, we need to run. Step 1: Make Occupy Apogee signs. Step 2: Take signs to the Occcupy Dallas, Occupy Denton, and Occupy Fort Worth hippies Step 3: Tell said hippies that Apogee is a French word meaning Metroplex Step 4: Go back and make more signs, as said hippies will wholeheartedly support the movement and call friends Step 5: giggle when the signs appear on Channel 8 news1 point

I'm a fan of the Occupy Apogee Movement! Protesting... ummm... well none of the other Occupy protestors know what they're protesting- so we don't need to know either!1 point

You know I support the whole "Occupy" thing (as yes, I'm a dirty hippie, pinko, Commie), but I also think some "Occupy Apogee" signage would be a great little taking advantage of current events marketing tool. Just a thought.1 point

Can you guys try and occupy Apogee about 4:00 pm this Saturday? That would work out for everybody... Your protest chants should be "North.....Texas".... There are some others like yelling when u-la-mon has the ball and it is 3rd or 4th down... stuff like that will really show the athletic department what's what.1 point

UNT - arbitrary score ULM - other arbitrary score angry GMG.com post count regardless of W/L outcome -- 2,534 But seriously, the line has moved in ULM's favor this week from -3 to -6. Even with a small turnout in attendance, the newfound home field advantage negates that, and UNT pulls away with a win by a margin of 10 points.1 point

ESPN and the eight day window sucks as does the 8 day window for CSS/CST (which doubly sucks until Comcast ends or loses its challenge to new FCC rules that would force them to make CSS available to Dish, Direct, ATT and Verizon). It's a tough situation for athletic departments. Do you put TBA and announce the time 8 days out or do you list your scheduled time and risk having to get the word out later that the time has changed. None of it is done for the ticket buying fans.1 point

Indiana is terrible. They are 1-6 after firing their coach who went 5-7 last year. They weren't good last year. On the way to 5-7 they beat a 4-8 ArkSt team by 2 and and a 2-10 WKU by 17. My point was UNT had less to sell to recruits during past recruiting classes other than the most recent, because UNT had a harder sell to convice recruits that the staff in place was capable of winning. You played Clemson even for a half in the opener last year. Clemson finished 6-7 last year, sure they are ranked this year, but they didn't sniff the polls last year and won by 25. ASU played its open against eventual national champion Auburn as close as Arkansas, Ole Miss and South Carolina did and it was a two score game halfway through the third quarter. Auburn won by 26. We lost our openers by an average of 25.5 points but I think a 26 point loss to an eventual 14-0 team carries more style points than a 25 point loss to an eventual 6-7 team. Playing the ifs and buts game. Last year Arkansas State beat ULM UNT, FAU, and MTSU (televised rout). For the BUT games: @Indiana determined on missed FG on next to last possession. @Louisiana Aplin picked off at ULL 17 on drive that could have tied or given ASU the win. @Troy goes 67 yards in 28 seconds to take the lead and the win with 17 seconds left. Western KY the Red Wolves leading by 7 with 45 seconds left face 4th down at the WKU 49. Bad snap to the punter gives WKU the ball at the ASU 22. They tie, ASU scores on first play of OT, WKU answers and runs trick play for 2 and the win. Adding intrigue, players had discussed the week before the game that a loss ends Roberts time at ASU. @FIU Hilton scores in final two minutes and FIU converts two-point conversion for 7 point win Arkansas State was that close to going 9-3 last year. UNT had a unique situation last year. You got to replace a coach the players apparently had lost confidence in, they got a semi-fresh start and lost at home by 8 to a team ASU lost to on the road by 7 without a semi-fresh start. You beat MTSU by 6 in Smurfland we beat them the week before by 26 in Jonesboro. Your semi-fresh start got you a 12 point loss in Monroe, ASU beat them by 14 in Jonesboro with the same-old-same-old. ASU returned its record-breaking QB and three receivers who had five TD receptions and added Josh Jarboe at receiver. ASU returned 10 starters on defense. ASU placed 4 on the Phil Steele pre-season Sun Belt first team, UNT placed 2 if you count the kicker. ASU 5 on the second team, UNT 4 if you count second team kick returner. ASU 5 on his 3rd team, UNT 3. The Sun Belt named five ASU players all-conference compared to two for UNT. Phil Steele and the league coaches didn't agree with the assertion that UNT handed McCarney enough talent to be immediately competitive. One last point. Sure as you say ASU and ULL's players "were all recruited at the SUN BELT LEVEL." But ASU recruited two classes to that level coming off 6-6 seasons. ULL recruited three classes to that level coming off 6-6 seasons. UNT recruited 5 classes coming off nothing better than three wins. Surely you think that makes a difference in generating recruit interest.1 point

Oh I agree, but if you've watched LaRussa's career, he's much more match-up driven than any other manager. Hopefully, Wash learned his lesson here and doesn't try to get in a chess match with the roster. He has more talent -- he can't forget that in the heat of the battle.1 point
-
German was a bait move to get La Russa to change pitchers. He tried to out gamble the town drunk and lost. I'm not thrilled with it, but I get what he was doing -- change pitchers and then bring in Torrealba or Moreland. I'm shocked La Russa didn't overmanage the situation right back. If you want to be mad at Ron, be mad about the Punto walk before Craig's hit.1 point
