  1. The "I don't want to be laughed at at work thing" is one of the saddest fan complaints ever. I love North Texas, but if I ever either (1) define myself by how 18-22 year olds play football on scholarship or (2) decide to be sensitive to people teasing me abut how 18-22 year olds play football on scholarship, I'd like someone to beat me senseless with a bag of dils. Also, we've been at the bottom of the Belt for a few years now...so bad news on that whole "passed by" thing...

  2. I don't think it is reasonable to expect UNT to hire a new coach and get the results that Arkansas State and Louisiana are getting with their new hires. A red-shirt senior on any of the three teams signed in the Spring of 2007 was influenced by the 2006 season that finished a couple months earlier. Every other recruit was influenced by the seasons after 2006. UNT 2006-2010 record 11-49. Best season 3-9 (twice), worst season 1-11. Most significant win(s) SMU in 2006. Arkansas State 2006-2010 record 25-35. Best season 6-6 (twice) worst season 4-8 (twice). Record vs. UNT in span 5-0. Most significant win(s) SMU in 2007, Texas A&M 2008 Memphis 2006 & 2007 Louisiana 2006-2010 record 24-36. Best season 6-6 (three times) worst record 3-9 (twice). Record vs. UNT in span 4-1. Most significant win(s) Houston in 2006, Kansas State in 2009 Rather unrealistic to expect similar immediate results when UNT went a combined 1-9 the past five seasons against the two and when the BEST season at UNT in that time frame had the same record as the WORST season at UL and was worse the the WORST season at Arkansas State. I was impressed with the McCarney hire but he did not take over the situation that Hudspeth or Freeze took over.

  3. As i've stated before i'm new to the Mean Green world but you folks have no clue how bad things can get. I grew up around the Kansas State program and we flat out sucked prior to hiring the RIGHT guy (If you don't know his name you don't know college footbal). *See Below* He took over a program that had lost 510 games in 93 years of play—easily the most losses of any team in Division I-A at the time. The school had been to only one bowl game (the 1982 Independence Bowl), had not won a conference title since 1934 and had enjoyed four winning seasons in the previous 44 years (including two in the previous 34 years). The program had also gone winless in 27 consecutive games. 1989 1-10-0 1990 5-6-0 1991 7-4-0 1992 5-6-0 1993 9-2-1 Give Coach Mac a chance before even mentioning/thinking/typing that something maybe wrong or not to your liking. Me and my family due to various reasons have invested and turned our full attention to supporting North Texas. I cheer as loud as anyone and support the program in any way I can. Cheer a block, cheer a first down, cheer a dam good punt.. get out there are root for this team and in time if Mac is the RIGHT guy things will be better

  4. Wait...I thought we were having a coaching discussion. Didn't realize that could devolve so quickly into another "Look how important I am" discussion by Rick. Diversify a little...you really should invest in a new bit. This one is tired and the reason people don't like you.

  5. I had dinner last night with a woman who'd gone to SMU during the lean years and a man who'd gone to New Mexico. Throwing in the horrendous experience of basketball at my undergrad along with the past few seasons of UNT football, we all had a good, commiserative laugh at enduring the losses. In nearly 20 years of being out there in the working world, I don't think I have ever once had a colleague give me hell about attending a school with crappy athletics. Generally, I'm too busy outproducing them, cuz, you know, capitalism. A favorite AM Radio phrase comes to mind. "America! Love it or leave it!" Honestly, if being a fan of UNT athletics is so freaking miserable across all possible aspects (winning pct., uniform, scheduling, coaching staff, parking, facilities, conference affiliation, lack of phone calls, too many phone calls, beer in the stadium, no beer in the stadium, win blowing out of the east, lack of coddling recognition from all involved entities from the president of the university all the way down to the corn dog vendor), then by all means, stop torturing yourself and put your hard earned entertainment dollars to better use elsewhere! Jesus, it's such a buzz kill coming here and reading the self loathing crap that gets posted every day. I reiterate. It's a game. Played by kids. That we watch. With beer. And BBQ. Among friends. These things are supposed to be fun! As for making your fandom part of your identity, I doubt a single person here will have it on his headstone "Husband, father, community stalwart. Cancelled out by being a sad alum of a crappy football program."

  6. Speak for yourself. I'm sick of losing too, but I'm not naive to think one year is enough for a coach.

  7. I've been lurking in the shadows for some time, but I finally had to break down and set up an account. I honestly wish UNT well as your school navigates realignment. As I've posted on Killerfrogs, I hope good things for all of the local schools. With that said, I hope many of you start to warm to the changing demographics of the "typical" SMUer. 20 years ago it was a bunch of trust fund babies running around Dallas like they owned the world (which, many actually do/did). Today, almost half of SMU students were/are graduate students or scholarship undergraduates. It's a drastically changing demographic that will hopefully be supportive of all DFW folks. I'm not going to lie, there are still thousands of overly-well-to-do students attending the school (I think that is forever), but I'm hoping all of the "SMUt", "SMOO", etc. labels start to subside a bit. There are MANY MANY SMU fans that wish UNT well -- honestly. Last, while we would love to have more of you guys visit Ponyfans, please consider how SMU fans perceive the SMU program before you post comments like "SMU and UNT will soon be in the same conference". Frankly, that would be like me going onto some Big 12 school’s board and saying the same thing to them. I should expect to draw some negative comments (perceptual gaps are involved). There may be a day in the future when UNT and SMU is a good rivalry. For now though, let's just focus, as citizens of DFW, on helping all of teams get better. I hope to see some of you on Boulevard for a game! Good luck guys!

  8. I just did a 5 minute check of other programs in our region and there posted game times. Do these fan bases bitch as much as we do about game times? From past experience with being a season ticket holder at Arkansas and LSU (because of work relocation) game times are announced a week in advance. SMU: 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA 11/26 TBA Baylor: 11/5 TBA (Homecoming) 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA 12/3 TBA Texas: 11/5 TBA 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA 12/3 TBA LSU: 11/5 TBA 11/12 TBA (Homecoming) 11/19 TBA UL Monroe: 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA 12/3 TBA Ark. ST: 11/12 TBA 11/19 TBA We should thank our AD department for trying to give us the ability to plan ahead. Time change for only 1 week in 12 (or 6) is pretty good by my account.

  9. It isn't that I don't appreciate what FFR does/has done...it's just very self-aggrandizing and arrogant of him to bring it up anytime his statements/concerns/questions/what-not aren't met with agreement and lauding. Most people who donate their time/money/effort to something do so because they truly believe in it and could care less if they're recognized and praised for their charity.

  11. Having a welcoming attitude like this will certainly entice more people to invest in the program. For the record I donate, and certainly take every opportunity to talk about the positives we have to get others on board. Are we where we want to be, no. is coach Mac getting us pointed in the right direction, yes. You running us down is accomplishing nothing.

  12. I wouldn't have said this back in 2006, but I'm glad Dickey seems to be doing well at Texas State. His conference winning streak, bowl victory and the love he had for Andrew Smith are fondly remembered.

  14. rick, 1st i am sorry the time change has hurt you plans for homecoming. i know how you schedule your professional responsibilities around unt's published time and schedule. 2nd, both a-state and ull made good hires, as did we. however, they had a base of talent to start with, where we had little if any. hiring t.d. was a mistake. allowing him a 4th year was a bigger one. we have a young offensive line, weak secondary, no size on either side of ball, and need much better play at q.b. having said that, i am always susprised how la. monroe is able to do more with less.thanks again for your continued support of north texas athletics.

  16. The yearly clash between the Mean Green and Ragin' Cajuns pits two teams against each other with angry adjectives. Are there any other teams in the FBS with adjectives in their names that express similar antisocial sentiments?

  17. I don't know who you're referring to here, but as a casual fan who lives hundreds of miles away myself, I think some hardcore Mean Green fans on GMG have lost sight of something. Everyone who follows a program can't be a zealot. Some of us can't -- or don't -- want to spend that much time and effort on the Mean Green. I turned in my zealot card during the final season of Todd Dodge. I don't want another one until McCarney proves himself. I think my North Texas Exes and Mean Green Club memberships have both lapsed. I got tired of doing the same thing and expecting different results. With 30,850 seats in Apogee and a dedicated fan base that's maybe half that size, UNT's going to need some casual fans. Is it really a bad thing that some of them come here every day to shoot their mouths off?

  18. No no no, we're glad you're going to games. We're happy you have opinions. You just need to realize your opinions don't matter when they're in contrast with those who consider themselves Mean Green Royalty.

  19. We made the worst coaching hire in the history of college football a few years ago, which I, as well as many others, was categorically opposed to from the get-go. There's nothing that can be done to erase that. This isn't a blame game, it's just the facts. We don't have consistent QB play, which renders our running game largely irrelevant. We don't have depth, at any position, which is why we get our tails handed to us in the second half (you'll note Ark State put this game away with a 21-point 4th quarter). Complaining about wanting to win now is great but it accomplishes very little. We are not a complete team. I fully expect Mac and the boys will win on Saturday. And I think there's still another win or two out there. 5 wins is more than we've managed in God knows how long. I'm not content with 5 wins, but I'm content to give the man more than 6 games before I start bitching about what he hasn't done. Look for a big second year.

  21. Let's not paint with the "everyone who makes jokes doesn't give" or "class warfare" brushes right now. I know plenty of jerks and cool people who donate at every level and I fit in somewhere that is less than I wish I could give, but more than my wife thinks I should. I have no plans to reveal mine or any other known donation amounts on the interwebs (unless they finally decide to erect my Quoner bidet in the locker room), nor do I want to know what anyone else does. Maybe I am just rare or have relative youth on my side or something, but all I have felt since donating is a bigger connection to everything around me and a greater appreciation for what I thinks ahead. I've felt no desire to have a greater say in anything, but maybe I need to start waving my genitals towards Bonnie Brae more. I think I've shown I'm not afraid to turn on a coach (giggle) when it's possibly warranted, but I really don't see how a coach who has already doubled our last coaches first year win total is already failing -- especially in light of what ArkState posted.

  22. Note to RV and Coach Mac. Put FFR on speed dial and consult him before making any decision other that what to eat for breakfast. Second thought, better include breakfast also.

  23. Amazing how fast this group...or some...can turn on a new head coach. While the guy told everyone over and over and over again that the "cupboard was bare"...so often in fact that some of us actually got very tired of hearing it...some choose now to forget all that and start comparing him to "other" first year head coach records. Rick may say, "I was just pointing out a fact"...and that's true, but seems to me that there might, just might, be a bigger reason behind the post. Well, that's fair even if there is, and I'll support Rick's right to have such a "reason", but folks, let's not get this thing going into a dumpster because our HC told us exactly what to expect and some chose to simply ignore him and decide that UNT was ready to compete for the SBC crown this season. Congrats to all the HC's who have better records than UNT...good for them and good for their fan bases. It must be nice, but if you expected more than a max of 5 wins this season for the Mean Green you have been drinking much more green kool-aid than I have been accused of drinking. And, I see nopthing...nothing...to be gained here by pointing out every coach that has a better record that Coach mac at this point in the season...first year HC or 20-year HC. Lots of experienced and not so experienced HC's have less than wonderful w/l records at this point in the season...what, about half-way. Let's try to enjoy the season as best we can, support the seniors on this team who have worked hard (and many who should probably be starting for SFA, ACC, etc.)and played their rears off for UNT, it's students and alumni. When the season is over we can all sit back and pontificate about what, if any, progress was noted, what the HC and staff should and should not have done (as if anyone on here really has a clue about that) and who should and should not be back to play for the Mean green next season. We have a homecoming game this Saturday to enjoy. And, it looks now like the weather will be great for the early-start with possible showers later. I believed Coach Mac when he talked about the players he had early on and I believe him now. This is not a one-season turn around project. Let's see where the Mean green is AFTER the season before anyone starts the "Coach Mac" isn't as good as......threads. Or, even threads that seem to want to infer that through comparisons to other 1st year head coaches. Again, not picking on FFR...I get it, and I get where he is coming from. Just stating a "different" view. Get a grip people, cool your jets and let's support this HC and his staff and these players as they look to win more games than UNT has won in any one season in a very long time. That would, be a nice improvement, right?

  25. We move the game to get more in and all it will do is kill attendance, why does anyone think it will increase attendance by moving the game up? Here is a big clue for all those that forgot. Why did we move as many games to 6:00pm as we could? Anyone Anyone? Bueller? Because the earlier the game the worse our attendance was. This not going to change so we give up 4000 to pick up 500 real good choice AD! And all the fans on this board that can suddenly make this game because it was moved up are as full of crap as they can be. Those that find it convenient by a move up would likely be just as happy if all games were moved up. All this will do for me is shorten the time I spend with old friends I only get to see at Homecoming. So in the end I see no benefit in this move expect the now extra drop in attendance, which has been proven in the past. The Ranger's game impact will be the same 4 or 6 or 2 that is the really dumbass part of this joke. RV you screwed up! But hey its not the first time Huh?

  26. Haha wow, I was totally agreeing with you until you brought up politics. You must be very conservative, your name is DodgeFan. He's not coming back man, times have changed, its okay to make PROGRESS sometimes.

  27. First off, let me say that I can't attend the game whether it is at 6:00pm or 4:00pm due to a wedding in the evening, so I want to get that out in the open before I comment. Two weeks ago, many of you were asking for a game time change due to the possibility of the Rangers having a World Series game that night, and now many of the same are complaining that a change has been made. Two hours is not that big of a deal considering many would already be there for tailgating, etc... As another poster stated, go to the game and then have a post game watching/listening party in the parking lot. Sounds like a fun idea. More importantly, this is what happens in "big time" football all the time. I used to work with a group of LSU fans. They would invite me down for games in Baton Rouge, and I would ask what time the game was taking place. Many, many times they said they wouldn't know until the SEC decided which game would be the afternoon televised game (2:30pm) or the evening televised game (7:00pm). Either way they were going. That's just the way it is when television is paying you big bucks. Now what does this have to do with NT football since television dollars aren't in the equation? RV and the administration have to decide what time will attract the largest crowd. What if the earlier time results in 5,000 extra paying customers at $20 a ticket plus conservatively $20 in concessions? That is a $200,000 decision that is not difficult to make. Before you say this time change won't bring out that many more casual fans, let's remember that this is homecoming. What if Suzie Student's or Jimmy Student's parents said they would come to the game, but then Dad backs out because he wants to watch the Rangers game instead? Well, if Dad backs out, we probably also lose Mom because this is Homecoming. What about Joe Alumni that rarely comes back to campus who said he wasn't coming, but now he will since there is not a conflict with the Rangers' game? It gets exposed to a good game in a great venue with superb pre-game tailgating. Well he now decides to buy season tickets, join the Mean Green Club to secure a parking pass and joins the NT Exes so he can grab a beer in the alumni pavillion. Think about the money involved there, not counting his concessions, etc... For those upset with the reduction in "catch up" time with old friends, classmates, alumni, fraternity brothers, sorority sisters, etc.., you now have time after the game to visit as well, probably over a beer at a local establishment watching the Rangers' win. Being a man, I can usually gather all the information I need for a sufficient "catch up session" in about 5 mintes, 10 if we are feeling patient. Just grab a beer and shoot the sh.. like you normally would on The Hill or in the parking lot. I don't find this to be a slap in the face of the long term fans at all. I find this to be the best decision for North Texas football. When posed with the question of moving the game a few weeks ago, RV probably jumped the gun when he stated that wouldn't happen. In hindsight, he probably should have said, "We'll look into it," but hindsight is always 20/20. Unfortunately, he was bound to piss off a few fans over a decision that I believe is better for the majority and helps us have a better crowd than competing against the Rangers' game four sweep of the Cards. It's just the way it is, and RV was bound to make someone mad regardless of the decision. I must say that the reaction of many on here is rather selfish. I know that most of us plan way in advance to ensure our attendance at these games, but we also must take a step back when something like this occurs and realize what is being done is for the best of the program, maybe not the best for me personally, but again, the best for the program. If I could attend the game, I would have driven in on Friday night arriving around midnight allowing me all day Saturday to enjoy for the game. I know many don't have that luxury, and I probably won't as my children get older, but adjustments can be made. Even if I had to drive in Saturday and arrive at game time, I would make the trip. We have to realize as this program grows, adjustments will be made, conveniences when we were a sleepy little team minding our own business in the Southland, Big West, and Sun Belt will go away as we move up the food chain. Those that are "big time" donors giving $500 a year to the Mean Green Club, will become just another donor unless they bump that up considerably. It's just the way it is. As NT's committment to success increases, so must our's, and we must realize that decisions must be made for the betterment of the program as a whole and those decisions may not always be best for me personally. The program is much bigger than any one individual or individuals and should be treated as such. Here's to a big Homecoming Crowd and a Mean Green win. Wish I could be there, but I will be listening.

  28. Just to shed some light on the situation. Jim Harbaugh was offered and in principal accepted the UNT job. He literally shook hands with Rick saying "I'm good if you're good" boarded a plane to San Diego, got off the plane and had a voicemail from Stanford offering him over a million per year. He then called Rick to apologize and said that he was going to accept the Stanford job. Almost 2 days later this was the same thing with Jimbo Fischer with him accepting the UNT job in principal, but being offered the Florida State job. So, I am say that UNT were hours away from having having either Harbaugh or Fischer as a head coach. But that is how the ball bounces sometimes.

  29. After leaving the Tavern, I decieed to donate to #occupydenton. As a registered Stock Broker I thought it would be kind of me to give back to those in need. I went to Jimmy Johns (a corporate company) and bought a loft of bread, and donated it to those who are camping out on fry. They have no food or water and as a person of corporate america I thought I should give back to those in need. Needless to say, they ate it...... This post has been promoted to an article

  35. And who are you to be critical of anyone that actually wants to attend a game?

  36. If you are referring to me as the one "begging" for tickets I'd say that's a little off base. I asked to BUY a gentlemans season tickets for the game if wasn't going to use them. Apparently his wife doesn't want to sit next to my wife and I as he mentioned giving them away to students. I'm a student so I don't have to pay for tickets, just thought I would like to sit on the alumni side.

  37. Things like the stadium don't always happen the first try. RV may have made a mistake in his first attempt but he didn't run away from the idea or throw his hands in the air and say 'this isn't possible here.' Instead he went with 'Why not North Texas?' and the rest is history. I'm sick of people acting like armchair ADs.

  38. Because politics is totally irrelevant to whether a poster supports The University of North Texas or not. Making cracks about liberals or conservatives, Obama or Palin alienates part of our fan base. A base that is not robust enough to afford losing even a single fan. As for the other "stupid stuff" feel free to disparage my religion - we Druids are very thick skinned. God bless Texas

  39. I suspect that those who are pissed that McCarney isn't producing results similar to what is happening at ULL and ArkSt haven't been able to look past the uniforms to see the actual players that are wearing them. Open your eyes!! With FIU and ArkSt, all you have to do is simply look at the size of the players on both of these team's offensive and defensive lines....and don't show me a freaking roster comparison! I couldn't give a rats what a player's listed at on a roster....open your eyes and watch these dudes while they are on the field. They are big, strong, and can move...and deep enough to rotate in backups that don't give much (if anything) up to the starters. After that, all three of these teams have better than average to excellent QBs and skill position players. Nothing against our guys, but we simply do not matchup...yet.

Harry gave you the numbers...the '08 and '09 recruiting classes were unmitigated disasters. These are the guys who should be starters right now.

  42. FIU seems to have gone backward from earlier in the year. With FIU, ASU and ULL all at the top of the league, it appears to me that the Belt is far from tough this year. NT has improved much more than FIU and although they got trounced in the fourth quarter by ULL almost exactly like FIU did against ASU; if NT had any kind of offense they could be among the leaders in this conference. I am certainly not buying it is going to take a major rebuild to be among the best of the Belt.

  43. Nice UNT has their new motto now "Just Wait!!" Whether it is 7 yrs or 50 years lets just wait. Why do we always seem to have the same issue year after year, yet other smaller budgeted teams tend to ignore their problems and just win.
    2 points
  44. 25 years of losing isn't going to be remedied by one winning season. Especially in a small private university with less than 10k undergrads. We do sellout or fill up the majority of our stadium when we play someone who people actually gives a damn (UCF? no one but the die-hard cares about them). It sucks but that's just how it goes. The UTEP game and even Northwestern State game were full and looked great. Last year's game against Army and TCU where absolutely filled to the brink, including the lawn area. But not sure what more to say, our attendance does suffer, most SMU fans will tell you that. We got our problems, and clearly so does UNT - I'd be more preoccupied with trying to fix yours than getting off on "SMUt" comments lol.

  45. I get you are real bitter about SMU going to the Big East but do you really think they only had 500-1000 fans? You are quoting a poster on another board and treating him like he has all the credibility in the world and that he wasn't exaggerating. I can say that UNT had 30k fans in the stands for FAU, will you believe that? Please post it everywhere, maybe it will help us get into CUSA. If you say it enough times it becomes true right? I get so tired of all the SMU bashing on here, I wish UNT would just worry about themselves and take care of their own business instead of constantly judging ourselves based on others.

  46. Once again how the hell do we go from being a missed XP to a 20 pt butt kicking to ULL in 1 year when they also have a new coach, without the same skins on the wall, although he does have a D2 National Title, tired of the excuses DMac should be going out to win not experimenting for the future. The past 7 years of rebuilding is getting old. If we wanted rebuilding we should have kept Dodge and his much lower salary.
