  1. Yesterday was a frustrating loss. I'm certainly not going to try and figure out the performance or the decisions of the coaches...I am just a fan, not a coach. Obviously we have areas to work at, but I'm quite sure that the staff knows what they are. This team needs our support...plain and simple. Next Saturday is going to be awesome. The weather should be perfect...great tailgating...and what I believe what will be a great game. Our team has the chance to make it 3 home wins in a season. I don't know the exact stats, but when was the last time that happened? We are protecting our house! Yes, the Rangers will be playing at the same time...use your DVR or smart phones to follow that game. Think of how fun it will be to see another win at Apogee. That place is such a special venue for college football. The whole atmosphere is contagious. It's just fun and should be enjoyed by all of us. Come to Homecoming, enjoy the weather, eat and drink tons of good stuff, and watch our team get the 3rd win this season. ...can't wait for next Saturday

  2. Not saying I disagree what people may say about him , but I don't think it's fair to start any negative threads w/ a players name headlined in it. Call for the the coaches head all day long , but these are just kids remember. Grown men are the ones who ultimately make all these decisions

  3. I hope I never see Derek Thompson play another down. Not a knee-jerk response either. I've seen every down he has played this year. He is terrible. Even if you give him credit for drops, young offensive line, and poor play calling he is still extra bad. I'm sure he is a great kid and a terrific person, but, he has got to be the most fundamentally wrong quarterback I have ever seen.

  4. I just wanted to let everyone know that several Mean Green fans responded to the invitaition from the Krewe de Chew to come by and visit our tailgate site and partake in some good food, music and fun. I know the game didn't turn out like they had hoped it would have but, other than the result of the game, I hope they enjoyed the tailgating and being in Lafayette. We hope to see all of you again on the Mean Green's next visit to Lafayette. Good luck for the remainder of the season!

  5. I didn't think we gave up... I just assumed McNulty's dad was at the game like he was at Tulsa.

  6. I think it goes to the fact we have given this staff the resources it needs in regards to facilities/salary upgrades etc. & are just so hungry for a ROI. after the last regimes lack of performance the current one is paying for our past patience.

  7. Next month won't be tough. Head on over to the super pit and and watch some fun UNT action.

  8. Because every single team you just named is more respected and well known than any in the Sun Belt Conference, right or wrong. Not to mention the MWC isn't known as the worst fottball conference in FBS like the Sun Belt. Again, right or wrong. That is the public perception, and going to the MWC would go a long way in changing UNT's perception inside the college football world, and, more importantly, with UNT's very own almuni.

  9. Surely Mac mentioned that this was all against the second team defense when the game was out of reach. Important to keep things in perspective, right?

  10. He was 3-3 for 58 yds.

  11. Because he's not good and McCarney's staff recruited Osborne to come in and challenge Thompson for the starting spot... that's why. We've still yet to see Osborne in any significant minutes. The only time we've seen him, he's outstanding... granted, it's garbage time and he's playing against 2nd-3rd string defenders.

  12. McNulty is the back up quarterback. Why is that so hard to understand?

  13. Lost Rodge and an experienced offensive line. That's what happened.

  14. Turnarounds happen at every level, and different coaches go about it different ways. As a point of reference, Texas State went 1-6 in the Southland last year. This offseason they hired Dennis Franchione (and some Diet Coke drinkin' dude named Darrell to run the offense), and they already have 5 wins (undefeated against FCS opposition - only losses to Texas Tech and Wyoming). If we wanted the quick turnaround, wanted the quick fix, this was our hire. We went another way... I believe that RV's feeling was that McCarney was a more solid long-term choice - it's either that or he was scared away by Fran's off field issues (marginal though they may be) or tendency to job-hop. Regardless, Texas State pulled the trigger we didn't, and by early returns, anyway, they're quite happy they did. The flip side, of course, is where TxSt is in five years. Will Fran be there? Historically, the answer is no - though if you're at a critical moment in your program's history and you need to win now (as they move towards FBS), I can scarcely imagine a better scenario for the Cats.... and they could have banked on this: In all his stops other than the A&M debacle, Fran has had his team at 7 wins or more within 1 or 2 years, regardless of what he inherited. It's all in style, of course. I'm assuming RV went with the more steady, slow-building, methodical McCarney. Most here felt this was a solid choice, and most still do. What many need to realize is that in our small sample size, McCarney is not the quick fix turnaround artist Fran is. He built Iowa State in a very different manner. Mac's first FIVE seasons at ISU: 3-8 2-9 1-10 3-8 4-7 Now, in his sixth season he broke out with 9 wins, and many argue that it's easier to get good quickly in the Belt (probable, but also consider the sliding scale affects ISU vs. NT as well as the conferences). Some would also point out that McCarney's big seasons were directly linked to the arrival of Sage Rosenfels & Seneca Wallace, which may give us an idea as to how important it is to excel at the QB position in this system. I think we all expect McCarney to do much better (much faster) here than at ISU. We all agree that if he duplicates his ISU win totals here, he'll never see the fifth season, much less the sixth. I just felt it's worth noting that this is what we bought - a lifer coach who has never been a part of a "quick" turnaround from the head coaching position. This is in NO WAY an indictment of the choice, mind you - I'm still feeling pretty good about where we are - I'm just putting out the idea that it seems RV & Co. was interested in other things beyond the "win now!" philosophy many are expecting to see from this staff. Fran was a win now choice. Mac is the kind of guy, historically, that may play freshmen and build things slowly - which is what we're seeing now... it just needs to move faster this time.

  15. After nearly four years of reading every excuse imaginable for the last regime, including something about bare cupboards and "his" players and "his" system, for years on end, I don't know if I'm pleased or pissed to see such vitriol cast toward this coaching staff.

  16. If we can see this, you know the players see it also. Mac is gonna lose his players just like Tod D lost his players. Then how can we recruit that D1 QB and play makers everyone wants. Now or soon Mac's task will be to get some respect from his players and coaches. I hope I am wrong but see what losing does to our attendance, now what is it doing to our players. Let's support the players, they have no control over play calling or who plays in the games.

  17. I an curious how our SEC/Big 12 coach git out coached in the 2nd half by a first year coach. 13-10 game and then we do nothing the entire second half. Drive great once again between the 20's the suck in the RZ, then proceed to see our veteran DBs get torched immediately after just like clock work

  21. The offense isn't fixable. Thompson sucks, is horrible. McNulty sucks. Dunbar is done already. Continue to build defensively, turn us into a defensive powerhouse. That's where the talent is. Slowly build an offense.

  22. So we bench our QB because he cant throw the ball down field and replace him with a running QB who cant throw the ball down field?? Its not hard to stop our offense, all you need to do is put 9 guys in the box bc were gonna run the ball everyplay... Not impressed with the play calling and QB today

  23. Our offense is the product of a young underdeveloped offensive line. Plain and simple.

  24. Just got a call from an NT alumn in Lafayette, says this was reported in the paper this morning. They are also being told the 32,000 seats for the game sold out already. Now that's school pride! Rick

  26. Yeah our offense sucks balls and needs to improve greatly. However, why do we think we have a good defense? We are improving on defense but we still SUCK. Look at how WIDE open those WR were from UL for two of their touchdowns. We don't have coverage and of course teams are going to make big plays against our defense if they have a decent offense. The team as a whole just sucks and I really hope the new recruits show improvement next year. I like coach Mac but we have to keep everyone accountable if the program doesn't get better next year. Look at UL and what they have done with a new coach this year...

  30. ... there is more to a practice then the 3 man weave... I do understand that a lot of basketball practices are closed events. But students would show up. Its just a draw just like midnight madness to let people see what you can do. Just Hype the team already!

  31. Yea, how dare JJ keep out the 10 people that would have shown up to see the team run the three man weave. What was he thinking?

  32. I would like to see us go all out for a top level JuCo QB that we could use for the next year or two while we groom a HS prospect

  33. Don't blame the coaching. He's done good with what he's had. He was given 0 FBS talent at the quarterback. Dunbar is already done for. Our defense has been improving leaps and bounds, but that offense has regressed beyond belief. Thompson isn't a good QB, neither is McNulty, and Osborne isn't FBS material. Offense is a long way off. We need to build up a defensive powerhouse.

  35. I hate to say this, but the news of the MWC-CUSA alliance spells doom for UNT's hopes of going to a new conference. Yes, SMU may go to the Big East, and Houston may go as well. But unless the two conference are raided to the point where they drop back down to 12 teams, there is a snowball's chance in hell of us moving up. So we have only one option left. Merge with the WAC. The six remaining schools in the WAC and the 9 Sun Belt schools (plus one when South Alabama moves up). I think a 16-team conference would be good, divided into East and West divisions that would only play within their division. The two division champions would then play a conference title game. I am disappointed, but what we need to do right now is build up a large conference... because now it is about survival.

  36. head coach gives coordinators the ability to draw up the game plan, if head coach does not like it has to be redone. apparently Mac has not took a liking to Chico's high energy approach. the last half of last year was pretty exciting football so i conclude it is the head coach that for whatever reason prefers to hope we can be competitive and hope for a break at the end to win. i do not like this approach

  37. I actually agree with this... except for one thing. He has extremely poor technique and equally poor decision making mostly. But, I do actually believe he is the best qb we have. And yes, that is saying something about our other players too. I would love to be wrong and we have something special in the next few years. I just don't see it... yet.

  38. Antonio Johnson was straight dominated all day long by #44. I looked at the o line as a future strength, but now I'm not so sure Johnson can be a Victor Gill type player, he has a sloooooooooow first step. The two freshman guards have done decent, but for the most part, their front seven blasted our lineman all game. Disappointing, it should have been 16-13 heading in to the 4th, not to mention the fumble on their 25. I am afraid we might have to dip in to the JUCO barrel again for a quarterback, Thompson is a below average player, he has decent accuracy, but he makes bad decisions and can't throw on the run, it's so frustrating to see them run the ball 75% of the time out of the shoutgun, it's three weeks in a row the starters have managed 10 or less points(21 of the 24 were scored on backups against Tulsa) I don't know if Mike Canales is the right man anymore, the mix of I formation tosses back to the shotgun run game has just been blatantly obvious and not worked well. I wonder if Mac had brought on one of "his guys" to be the OC, we would see the offense doing better. The current game plan is not working, try something new. Where's the creativity we saw last year Mike? I feel like we should have had a better plan for the 3-4, they teed off on the running game all night. 2-5, with ASU and Troy still on the schedule, WKU looks like it will be tough, I think we finish at 4-8. But it's just going to be another season of what ifs, with a bunch of close games, or games that were in our hands and we found a way to lose. Ugh, I hope we break 20k for homecoming.

  40. Someone here said that last year when Chico took over as HC the play calling duties went to someone else... does anyone know who that someone was, because young OL/Darius Carey or not, this doesn't look remotely similar in game plan or execution. Also, consider the case of teams like 2009 Oklahoma.. this is a different animal at home and on the road. Not the same team.

  41. how many balls did we really try to throw down field, basic stuff

  42. There's plenty to say but not much of it is good. What's disappointing to me is the play-calling. We are so predictable on first down. We never throw on first and we usually run Dunbar up the middle. We seem to have second and third and long constantly. We either don't have a quarterback or we don't have receivers...or both. This offense is offensive. I really thought that Canales would do a much better job.

  43. It's ashame because this game is and was winnable game. We have made way too many mistakes to win this tough game on the road. Zach Olen is usually money too but like some others, were just off today. I still feel like we have a great group coming up. It's just hard because like must of us, want it instantly. We have to remember that D. Thompson is a Sophomore and this is really his first year.

  45. ....and we didn't even come close to 100K for our opening week-end....with a NAME OPPONENT. Even in their worst times, they still have better overall fans than us. They also have a win over A&M (1996)....have we?
