  1. I would wager that there are very, very few people who are bigger Ranger fans than me. That being said, when it comes to Rangers vs. UNT, it is absolutely not even up for discussion. I had a buddy ask me last Saturday if I would rather have the Rangers win game 1 or UNT win against FAU. I didn't even have to think to answer that question. The University of North Texas collects/collected my tuition. While I have spent a great deal of money at The Ballpark in Arlington, I have spent much more at UNT for tuition/fees. I'm absolutely obsessed with sports, but my number one loyalty, without question, by a country mile, lies with UNT. Go Mean Green!

  4. The World Series began 108 years ago. It has tradition. It gave me the heroes of my childhood both past and present. It was near mythical. As time went by, it gave me the players' strikes of '81 and '94, the steroids scandal of the late 90s, players thumbing their noses at the cities they played in, and $9.75 beers. My Alma Mater began less than 108 years ago. It was there I experienced my first love. It sat with me late at night when I lost that first love. It taught me to think. It provided me with the means to make a living. It gave me a home to come back to until the end of time. Its athletic program features players who share these common bonds. Who appreciate me for weathering through their struggles and sharing in their triumphs. In 1989, I had a front row, game 5 ticket to the World Series. That's as close as I ever got to actually seeing one. In 1989, I still had childhood visions of hero worship in my head. You give me that same ticket today, on Saturday, October 22nd, and it's not such an easy choice. The series claims to be a once in a lifetime experience. The other is comfort. It's home. It supports you in return for your supporting it. I can't and won't judge what decision other people make, but for me, I look at what reciprocity exists, and I reward loyalty with loyalty.

  6. An opinion is one thing; 15 threads about it is another. We can argue if you want, but given the chance to side with you or McCarney, I'm taking McCarney. I feel better about these first 6 games and the direction we're going than I have in years, even with all the holes we need to fill on our roster moving forward. A backup QB who may or may not be a factor in 3 years as we improve recruiting just doesn't lead me to publicly whine and accuse a coach of nepotism and favoritism, but.. different strokes...

  7. I'm pretty sure if this happens, we'll get invited by CUSA. It'll help if we start winning more, but in the end, I don't even think that will matter all that much. CUSA will want a presence in the DFW...and...who else can they target??? Nobody.

  8. Why would the Belt want to be straddled with Idaho, San Jose, Utah State, Seattle, UTA, Denver, etc? Why not just cherry pick who we want and let the WAC become a basketball only conference (Boise and Air Force are rejoining the WAC for all sports except football). Idaho would be better off in the Big Sky. San Jose is questionable. USU screwed the Belt over, karma is a bitch. Cherry pick La Tech and UTSA. That brings the Belt to 12 with the addition of USA next year, keeps the conference somewhat regional, etc. If we were to do an alliance with anyone it should be the MAC - a scheduling and television agreement. They would have 12, we would have 12 - we could have our champ play their champ and try to finagle a BCS bid at some point down the road.

  10. There's plenty to say but not much of it is good. What's disappointing to me is the play-calling. We are so predictable on first down. We never throw on first and we usually run Dunbar up the middle. We seem to have second and third and long constantly. We either don't have a quarterback or we don't have receivers...or both. This offense is offensive. I really thought that Canales would do a much better job.

  12. Keep bringing up winning. Well, we had a winning record in the early 2000s and never came close to having so many fans show up for games. We will have to become a winning program in a major conference before that really makes a difference. We forget that there isn't much to do in Lafayette other than go and watch this game. Being in the DFW is only good for the TV market and recruits, everything else goes against us.

  13. No, but we beat Texas Tech (1997), who had a better record than the '96 A&M team. Pointing to a win over a 6-loss Aggie team 15 years ago as reason for ULL's crowd? Maybe I'm missing something. They've had a lot of bad crowds and losing football since then. I'd venture to say if they had opened this season against Houston, they wouldn't have had 100k tailgating. If they were 0'fer, they wouldn't have had the 6th largest crowd in history last week against Troy... and yes, by the way, the 6th biggest crowd in school history wasn't a sellout. Is Lafayette a great SBC roadtrip? Do they have really good, fun fans? Absolutely. They're winning. That's why it's this big. That's why we haven't spoken about "those big ULL crowds!!" in the past several years. Any difference between us and them (which wasn't even what I was referring to) is where you can start looking at external factors (DFW vs. lafayette, etc.)

  20. UNT isn't doomed by anything SMU does. UNT has a good chance of coming out in a much better situation.

  21. If SMU and Houston do leave for the Big East, and C-USA adds us, we definitely got the better end of that deal. C-USA to Big East isn't much of an improvement with the merger. Sun Belt to C-USA definitely is, especially if the new C-USA-MWC gets an auto-bid(which is certainly a possibility). The only reason the merger was up for discussion was for this exact reason, if I remember correctly. Why would they merge otherwise?

  22. What has the BigEast done for USF or Louisville? I doubt SMU will benefit all that much from being in the Big East. I think the most improved team in the area would be us for sure if we get into CUSA. Plus, it beats being in CUSA as the only non-AQ team in the area than being in the SB as the only non-AQ team in the area. Even if SMU doesn't accept the invitation (which I'm positive they will), they'll eventually join a major conference and it'll be the same issue. The CUSA has done a lot for several programs (UH, UCF, Tulsa, SMU, etc), and I'm sure it will help us a lot as well.

  24. I don't think we need to be kneejerking. Just because those two merged doesn't mean anything other than there's a lot teams in the same level now combined as one. And I highly doubt they become an AQ conference....atleast not right now. I don't think the SBC needs to merge with anyone to stay alive....at the very least the SBC is stable and we just have to keep winning. If we do that then who knows what may happen.

  25. Beer in the stands could be a HUGE revenue builder. I don't drink beer at UNLV games but I see it flying off the counters and the registers smoking. I am not sure why we pretend college athletics is not big business. It is not big business, it is MONSTER business. It is all about personal responsibility and trusting people to be adults. Those that are not will have a nice ride home by the DPD. It is time to bring the full pro experience to Apogee. GMG

  27. Who is flying into Texas first with stops in DFW and SAT? If I were the MWC or CUSA (I know they are here), I would be on the horn with North Texas and UTSA to grab DFW and San Antonio. CUSA is the best poised to have Houston SAT and DFW wrapped up, but the MWC could swoop in and undercut first if they wanted to. I believe both programs will go to whoever knocks on the door first. Las Vegas Reno San Diego Laramie Fort Collins Albuquerque Honolulu Fresno DFW San Antonio or San Antonio DFW Houston Tulsa El Paso Huntington Carolina New Orleans Memphis Hattiesburg

Love the Rangers but college football > baseball North Texas Mean Green Football >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> baseball I bought 6 plane tickets from Vegas to enjoy the best 6 days of the year. They could play at 9:00 AM or 11 PM and I would be on the hill. Let's take that next step - road game win - big conference road game win tomorrow! GO MEAN GREEN!!!!!

  29. No! Never! Die, thread Die! The WAC is a dumpster fire that should be avoided at all costs. There is a reason the 16 team WAC & Big West failed. A WAC + SBC merger or even a MAC + SBC merger would not qualify for AQ status, so why ruin your conference. Go to CUSA or have the SBC go to 12, but don't go to Idaho.

  31. I know this increases our chances of a CUSA/MWC invite but are we really sure they're going to expand? With the alliance they have an abundant of teams and they may look to stand pat right now and grow within. Again I just don't want to get my hopes that high because I think many on the board are assuming that once SMU goes to the Big East that our invitation will be ready for us from CUSA.

  32. The Big East is well aware of SMU's attendance. You're making it sound like they have no clue. SMU has something we don't have...they have some sort of history on the national level, currently becoming a really good football program and have ungodly amounts of wealth and resources. Nobody got a free pass here....SMU decided to nut up and start caring about athletics again and they ponied up 2 million bucks a year to get a coach in that would win football games and this is their reward. Again lets not worry about SMU because whatever they do is in the best of their own interest and every other school does and would do that as well. They earned it by hook or by crook and that is something you should respect.

  33. Louisville was already ridiculously strong before entering the Big East...reason why the got into the Big East. Now look at them. USF was also dominating before entering the Big East. I'm not saying it doesn't help its teams at all...an AQ conference is an AQ conference, but it's not much better than CUSA or MWC. Plus, its image is consistently being ridiculed and undermined. I've seen teams make remarkable strides in CUSA and MWC for that matter.

  37. Yet 500 to 1,000 for a CUSA game? I mean how many stadium attendants out of that group? Been in this market since 1972 and I know what SMU does as do many others on this board do and even SMU knows what they do with attendance counting, but the Big East seems to not have a clue. I guess they are enamored with having a school in their league who had the very first Death Penalty? I am a long time non- fan of SMU because they remind me of one of those western movie town facades; you know, all the store fronts look great until you go behind all of them to see they are all being held up by 2 x 4's or the like. Smoke & Mirrors U gets another unearned break with this Big East deal and that just my opinion. I know others on this board who are too disgusted to post their thoughts on this another "freeby" for SMU. I do not like that this very undeserving school gets a pass when they shouldn't get a pass. They coat-tailed into CUSA with a multi-year record that would make ours look like we were world-beaters. Sorry, not an SMU fan because of what they do and how they act to most all schools alums/fans (not just UNT) with their condescension. Still a free country to express an opinion, right? GMG!

  41. I don't see this as good for us. Even with the potential defections I don't see this Goliath of a conference being quick to add teams.

  42. How many time are you going to mention this? That game vs. Houston was delayed by two hours because a monsoon hit their stadium. No kidding their attendance was going to be terrible just like ours was last saturday because of weather. Why bash SMU's attendance when UNT's is equally bad and why are you constantly quoting a poster on another board? That's like quoting the National Enquirer.

  44. If there are still any future AQ's at all coming from whats left of CUSA (minus UH & SMU) and the MWC (minus Boise and AFU) I still think the nod goes to the MWC as being that league. All left of CUSA is just a knotch ahead from where we are now except trips to Houston (and Rice) ever other year. UTEP is a too far out for us to think of them as a true rival albeit we did have some good things beginning to happen with NMSU before they left the 'Belt. The WAC before they lost Boise would have been a good choice with us and 2 other 'Belt schools, but the WAC now is a joke. Sorry I digress, but from what other boards posters have said (even UH's) about SMU's glaring attendance problems along with their exxagerated attendance numbers, I still don't understand why that schools just keeps getting passes from just about everyone--Big East included. It's almost as if SMU thinks they can hide all that from everyone which quite frankly they have done a superb job. I think SMU in a Big East arrangement will be a much more difficult league to win for sure, though. If we could build our into a Boise type BCS bowl buster program that would give us an advantage over Smoke & Mirrors U and I would not worry about our recruiting against the Stangs at that point. Yet we have to get out of this malaise we've been in for just about all my adult life for us to do anything significant. GMG!
