I've been watching the Rangers since I was 4yo. And I love them. Happy as hell that they might be advancing again to the World Series but no way in hell will I be watching them over the Mean Green. Plain and simple.10 points

Myself, along with a large Apogee contingent, will be at Apogee Stadium. Go Rangers and Go Mean Green.7 points

It was a great idea to try to change the time of our homecoming game. I am sure if the Braves were in the world series on UGA's homecoming day that they would have worked around it. Right? Same for Ga. Tech. Also Wisconson if the Brewers were in. You know damn well if the Yankees or Mets were in, Rutgers would just reschedule the game. Get your arses to Apogee before it is renamed Apathy stadiun gosh dangit. See you there.5 points

I really don't get it. It's not like students can afford rangers tickets and when I was in college all I needed was an excuse to hang out, drink, and watch a football game. Pretty lame in my opinion. Plus...they get free tickets and the tickets are good.4 points

I want in on some of this synergy! Who are Raymond Taylor, Greg Gantt, Augustine Rubit, Martavious Adams, JJ Thomas, or Chase Hallam? Bunch of scrubs if you ask me. 34-0 and a 2 seed (because we were cheated and the selection committee does not recognize our talent, coaching, or synergy) in the NCAA tournament. Final Four appearance or J.J. needs to have jumper cables clipped to his ears and hooked to a car battery until the battery runs out of juice. If you don't believe this is going to happen with our new talent and proven coaching, then you don't truly believe in the Mean Green. If you're not with me, you're against me.3 points

We are small time right now. Big time teams change schedules all the time. It's not about "the loyal fans will come". It's about putting yourself in the best position to get butts in the seats. I'm not sure we should have any sense of entitlement at this point in out process.3 points

I'm flying in for the game (first homecoming in a few years...and of course no Bonfire with the drought this summer ). But as a pretty big baseball fan, I can understand the conflict some folks will have. Hell, in playoff baseball games where I have no vested interest I often have them on mute in the background while I have the KNTU (or ESPN3 stream if I'm lucky) broadcast on. And if UNT isn't playing I'll nearly always pick October baseball over football. Granted, I know most people are just fans of their team, and don't really follow the playoffs if their squad isn't in it (just look at the ratings if one of the big market teams isn't in). I suppose I am just a fan of the game, and follow the playoffs the way other people watch the NFL playoffs (which I don't really do until maybe the Superbowl).3 points

I liked the article and thought that it pretty well laid the cards on the table. Perhaps a little more mention that attendance could be a factor in realignment but otherwise the writer made good points. Student attendance is sorely needed if NT is to advance their cause and schedule teams that are familiar to the student body and Denton townspeople. Student support was there in the opener and I thought that we looked like a first-class university. It waned a little in the second game against a name opponent and I began to worry. Last week was pathetic. The band alone took about a third of the space of the students that were present. Two thousand non-band students in attendance would be a generous figure. That has to be the lowest percentage of students attending than any major university in Texas. I wish that I had the answer for what can be done to instill school spirit but NT Daily articles such as this can't hurt. It's one of the steps and I hope that it continues.3 points

This whole thread should not have happened until after the Rangers actually get to the series. Until then, it's all a hypothetical. But... Why not come to the game for the 1st 45 minutes and then go watch the ranger game at Rudy's or A sports bar somewhere?? At least you get to see the 1st qtr plus of football, not to mention the tailgating festivities before the game. You will also be counted in the attendance numbers. Win-win for the Ranger/uNT fan2 points

Who did? Tristan went for 36, DoJo went for 12, George pulled 11 boards...they're all gone. In fact, from that game we return 2 players who combined for 9 points and 12 boards in 43 minutes. I don't see how you can laud all the newcomer talent and then use anything from last year as defense for your stance. Bit of a falling down in logic.2 points

Cool a pissing match to see who is the biggest fan. I hope all these super Mean Green fans get an award. They've outdone themselves this time.2 points

Good gosh what is your beef with people wanting to go or watch a Rangers game? Dude it's just one game and if people choose the Rangers then let it be...you're making it sound like they want UNT to lose or don't care. It is all about implications of both games and you may not have a connection to the Rangers or pro sports but others may do. So get over it and you can go to the game while others can do whatever the heck they want. And yes watching your team watching the World Series (if the Rangers make it of course) far trumps attending the game at Apogee in my opinion and to many people's opinion. Again it is the WORLD EFFING SERIES! Once again I say Go Mean Green and Go Rangers!2 points

They are viewed as fresh meat that conveniently counts as a Div1 opponent. I hope they have good medical facilities.2 points

What a pitiful situation that the athletic department should basically be asked to say that their product is secondary to another product and even broadcast that product. What have the Rangers ever done for you? Any Texans even on the Ranger team? Good God, stay home and watch the pros or come to the football game and support your team. Don't ask your team to bend over and take it from the Rangers.2 points
-
You're a good man Tony. I just don't get where people get on this board get off talking about why they (or someone "casual fan" they claim to speak for) can't attend a North Texas football game. I followed Rangers baseball through some miserable years; I don't owe them my time when it's not a determining game in the series. Being in front of a tv watching baseball compared to being at Apogee watching football? Come on people.2 points

American Airlines Center should be our goal to get National Attendance & Talent. I would love however to get the DFW Torny going with TCU SMU UTA DBU UTD. Hell bring in UT, Tech, A&M, State, UTEP and others to make it the Lone Star Showdown over a weekend. Bring in some HS match-ups as well to bring in more attendance. Would be great for the DFW economy and give barging rights for a year for who is best in the lone star state.2 points

+1, and more if I could. This makes me not feel bad about having quit following the rangers 30 or so years ago, after becoming convinced they would never win anything, and that they had no serious desire to do anything except be part of the things to do when you came to the area to visit Six Flags (something about them trading Sammy Sosa for a bunch of guys noone has ever heard from since). I mean, what is it about baseball that makes them drag out their season to where they're nothing but a distraction to the national pastime of football? And scheduling playoff games during the day on weekdays and nights on weekends? Couldn't they just let the BOYS of October finish up their games in September, like back when it was a man's game, instead of the pampered, overpaid, media darlings of today? Sorry for the rant; I am convinced the Rangers finally decided to care about winning. I'm also convinced that the Mean Green have decided to care about winning, to the point where we should care about attending...UNT football games.2 points

So now we're preemptively looking for reasons to simultaneously lament the perpetual doom and gloom of UNT football while pounding our chests about what superior, dedicated fans we are. Good lord. To use a much maligned gmg.com phrase, great things are happening at UNT! Only this time, they really are! Anybody here still trudging into Fouts wondering how much we're going to lose by this time? The people will come. And someday, they may even wear grean...in your favorite shade! Maybe they'll even learn how to bend their arms correctly during the alma mater (something that still completely befuddles me). Take care of business. Let the team start racking up wins to the point where we're the 9 point favorite week after week instead of the surprise upset 9 point dog. Get some bowl appearances under out belt, and maybe even a bowl win or two. If you build it, they will come, but "it" comprises quite a bit more than just a shiny stadium (and oh my, what a nice shiny stadium it is indeed!) I look at the schedule for the rest of the season, and there is a hell of a chance that UNT could match the win total of the past four seasons combined! (Chico's wins notwithstanding) That's exciting! Can we enjoy that while we watch the fan base grow over time, or must we sneer at our stack of wrinkled hundred dollar bills at every possible turn?2 points

My daughter came home yesterday and told me she has a spelling bee next week. I promised her I would go, she's my daughter after all. Then I started thinking about it. She's never won a spelling bee that I can recall. All the other spellers are kids I've never heard of. Why can't she compete against some local kids, some kids I know from our neighbornhod? I know she needs me and all, but I'm told there's a debate tournament that day...and it's for the national title!!! I'm sure in time she'll understand that I just have to prioritize.2 points

Isn't this game the homecoming game? If that's the case I think there alot of planned festivities that could not be moved or completed if the game is moved-up. People just need to get their priorities straight. UNT football first, Rangers second!2 points

Having attended a lot of college games, being grateful, thankful and polite to visiting fans is a huge. They are at the stadium and may have traveled a long way. Welcome them and they may return every other year. Something that UT and OU do not get; but ATM does. In my experience anyway.1 point

Of course it is my opinion and true to me. I'm not saying it has to be true for anybody else. BUT, Football is more popular than baseball, that's a fact. Anyway, I know UNT football isn't anything compared to World Series, but UNT students should all still go to their homecoming game, but I know some won't go to the series game but will watch it on TV instead. That bothers me and being a die-hard fan, it pisses me off there aren't all that many fans like me at UNT. Just my feelings, that's all.1 point

Homecoming will offset the world series, just hope for good weather and a win at U LA LA1 point

with the exception of people watching the game from home, how many UNT fans are putting up funds to attend a world series game? Assuming they can get a ticket. From my perspective, following the game via smartphone app is about as exciting as the game itself and the football game will be way over before the important innings anyway. Unless you are a real diehard baseball fan and for those, do you think they would attend UNT football anyway?1 point

B+ First: never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never kick the ball to T.Y. Hilton. Second: Against Tulsa, go with the guy with at least some college experience if you've got to go with a backup. That was Osborn, not McNulty. Third: Indiana and FAU have staged rallies against us in the 4th quarter after we were way ahead. Coaches need to hammer into the kids not to let up. Fourth: Now that we have a dedicated special teams coach, the kicker is missing kicks. WTF?1 point

I hadn't been to a UNT game since the last homecoming and had a chance to take my 2 kids and wife out opening day. We subsequently decided to become season ticket holders and Mean Green Club members given the experience. I have two boys - 9 and 5 and always look at events like this as a way to show them the "College Experience". By the way, the mood at Apogee far exceeded anything I felt at Fouts as both an undergrad and Alum. Well to get to the point, I wasn't able to attend last weeks game so I offered my tickets to a good friend who has high school age boys. His one son plays on the freshman football team so we thought it would be a great opportunity to show him what college sports can look like. His other boy was considering possibly not going to college at all. After the game, I spoke to my friend to hear how it went. All he could say was how excited the boys were to be there. The parties going on and the excitement around the stadium. He said it provided a glimpse of what college life was and afterwards both boys had a newfound desire to go to college. Whether it happens is another story, but my friends wife was so happy we offered them the tickets because all the talk in the world about the benefits of college couldn't outweigh the actual feeling of being there. Sometimes seeing the diversity of our school can open the eyes of those with preconceived ideas of what a college student looks like. The best way to fill the stadium is to invite someone out. My friend is now thinking of going to homecoming with his family just to watch the game even though he didn't attend the school. I think that's pretty cool.1 point

Was that? Did I just read a positive article from Vito with no reference to former coaches or doomspeak of never ending anguish for the Mean Green? Did he in fact just give the wide receivers an endearing blue-collar nickname? What is this? Some kind of bizarro world?1 point

After going to opening game, I was on the phone with the Athletic Department on Monday about season tickets. Given my younger kids, we got front row in the endzone and they love it. My wife also liked the idea of blue lot parking so I became a booster given the perk of blue lot parking for boosters with season tickets. Worth every penny and a great family experience. Of course, my kids are now both Junior Mean Green members and I can't seem to go to a game without having to purchase some sort of clothing item. Shirts, hats, and of course 2 foam fingers.1 point

I don't see a reason to boo a team pregame. I prefer silent indifference...oh you are here, hadn't noticed that since you really don't matter that much. Booing after dirty plays, expected. Heckling (no profanity, and keep it in line with what they are doing that game), expected. Booing them as they come in will just get them more pumped up. Much better to pick at them over flopping like a fish when touched (all sports), dropping a pass, making a big mistake. remind them of their failures so that behavior might continue. Being a part of a raucous home crowd is all we can do to help out our players, booing at the start is I think counterproductive.1 point

Hello UNT fans. I just registered and can't wait for the season - particularly when Tony Mitchell is eligible. I had the pleasure of knowing and helping to coach Tony when he went to Pinkston HS. I had been involved over there before Tony showed up, and was lucky enough to help out while he was there as well. I can tell you that he is a fantastic young man and it is a shame that he had to sit out a year. Of course that resulted in his enrolling at UNT and the time is approaching for him to suit up again. When it comes to basketball there no other way to put it - Tony truly has a very rare combination of athletic ability, skill, and work ethic/coachability/humility. He has the size of an NBA big man and attacks the rim with authority. He also has guard skills when he needs to, and I have seen him size someone up on the dribble and drain a 3-pointer many times. I travelled to the Texas Jamboree in November of 2009 and it was simply one of the most dominating performances I have seen at any level of basketball. Tony was NBA ready 2 years ago according to some Dallas bball insiders. I would agree with that. I could go on and on but I will be back to add more as the season approaches. Here is an article from 2009 - keep in mind Tony will be 2 years bigger, stronger, more skilled, etc. He may have been ruled ineligible by the NCAA, but he has worked out hard and played on Team USA U18 and U19, and was the leading rebounder and shot blocker even though he played limited minutes. 2 years ago at a top HS event in Texas: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=4699976 Standout players Tony Mitchell, PF/SF (6-8, 215) Mitchell was simply terrific, displaying high-level athletic ability on both ends of the floor. He finished around the basket with power dunks on clear paths and in traffic. He rebounded at rim level in and out of his area on a consistent basis. Mitchell also is an excellent ball handler for his size and is great pushing the ball after pulling down a defensive rebound. He is a threat to go coast to coast if not brought under control by the transition defense. When Mitchell was not looking into the rim on one of his many dunks, he hit the midrange jumper with needed time and space. He also posted smaller defenders and elevated over them with ease to score in the lane. Mitchell can run the floor like a gazelle, and on defense, he has the speed, quickness and lateral movement to guard the 2, 3 or 4 position. He must add strength and work to extend his shooting range, but this live-body forward will keep Tigers fans on their feet with his high-wire act. He was by far the best player this weekend.1 point
