  1. My daughter came home yesterday and told me she has a spelling bee next week. I promised her I would go, she's my daughter after all. Then I started thinking about it. She's never won a spelling bee that I can recall. All the other spellers are kids I've never heard of. Why can't she compete against some local kids, some kids I know from our neighbornhod? I know she needs me and all, but I'm told there's a debate tournament that day...and it's for the national title!!! I'm sure in time she'll understand that I just have to prioritize.

  2. Isn't this game the homecoming game? If that's the case I think there alot of planned festivities that could not be moved or completed if the game is moved-up. People just need to get their priorities straight. UNT football first, Rangers second!

  3. I hadn't been to a UNT game since the last homecoming and had a chance to take my 2 kids and wife out opening day. We subsequently decided to become season ticket holders and Mean Green Club members given the experience. I have two boys - 9 and 5 and always look at events like this as a way to show them the "College Experience". By the way, the mood at Apogee far exceeded anything I felt at Fouts as both an undergrad and Alum. Well to get to the point, I wasn't able to attend last weeks game so I offered my tickets to a good friend who has high school age boys. His one son plays on the freshman football team so we thought it would be a great opportunity to show him what college sports can look like. His other boy was considering possibly not going to college at all. After the game, I spoke to my friend to hear how it went. All he could say was how excited the boys were to be there. The parties going on and the excitement around the stadium. He said it provided a glimpse of what college life was and afterwards both boys had a newfound desire to go to college. Whether it happens is another story, but my friends wife was so happy we offered them the tickets because all the talk in the world about the benefits of college couldn't outweigh the actual feeling of being there. Sometimes seeing the diversity of our school can open the eyes of those with preconceived ideas of what a college student looks like. The best way to fill the stadium is to invite someone out. My friend is now thinking of going to homecoming with his family just to watch the game even though he didn't attend the school. I think that's pretty cool.

  4. I say we trick our students by saying invitng them to a FB event for a large Rangers watch party going on at Apogee that night. The joke will be on them when students are eligible to enter a raffle for one oficially licensed Rangers (wrist) watch.

  7. Shaft, it is not the leaving, it is how they choose to try and walk out the door. SMU continues to act like they are above everyone. It is the old adage, "What goes around comes around."

  8. Vito tiptoes around it, but WW is leaving for a simple reason; why stick around and watch all your hard work get undone when there is a free for all from SBC schools to move into the few CUSA spots that open up. WW built the Sun Belt into a real conference by bringing in football. He help bring in direct and secondary bowl tie-ins, and worked to create higher payouts and more home-at-home setups for OOC games. WW earned his keep, so there is no reason to bash the guy as he goes out the door.

  9. Somewhat on the subject...does the boots and short skirt look do a little something for you, as it does for me? Add in the NT boots and the ED is cured. GMG

  10. I think the closest we've come to having a football rivalry was SilverEagle and Ramone Flanigan.

  12. I believe the late game thinking was that most Saturday kids sports are done by 4. Late games give no excuse not to go...unless the Rangers are playing at home in the F'ing World Series.

  13. I saw one game...when was it...ohhhh...ummmm....it was....ehhhh...oh wait, I remember now. I believe it was the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. Anyone who thinks this wouldn't be an improvement over DT is on something that I would like to try.

  16. Please think bigger than UTSA and TXstate. It makes me sick thinking that one of these two schools would be our "intra state rival".

  19. After going to opening game, I was on the phone with the Athletic Department on Monday about season tickets. Given my younger kids, we got front row in the endzone and they love it. My wife also liked the idea of blue lot parking so I became a booster given the perk of blue lot parking for boosters with season tickets. Worth every penny and a great family experience. Of course, my kids are now both Junior Mean Green members and I can't seem to go to a game without having to purchase some sort of clothing item. Shirts, hats, and of course 2 foam fingers.

  21. I finally found a UNT Garden Flag to display near my driveway. I see so many ut and ATM flags, but a UNT garden flag has been hard to come by. Until now. Check out this website. Garden Flag I bought a flag at the Spirit Store but it is too large and made of a felt type material that I don't think will hold up in bad weather.

  22. B.... B??? I think he just wanted to throw out a letter... Does he know who NT played? 2-4 isn't bad at all! I'll give Mac an A+... He's not just rebuilding a team... He's changing a culture. And doing it about as well as anybody could.

  23. And...so is UNT for that matter. I cannot believe I am agreeing with you, but SMU is, indeed, trying to look out for its own best interests...just as TCU did in accepting the Big East invite (and working hard to get that invite in the first place) and then shunning the Big East the very first opportunity they had to "move up" to the Big XII. Where's all the self-interest and "the way they went about it" talk regarding TCU on this board? This stuff doesn't make SMU or TCU or UNT for that matter, good or bad. It is simply the business...big business...of college athletics these days. I wish it were not so and that sportsmanship and ones word still meant something, but it seems to not be so any longer in the case of "realignment".

  25. that takes care of 1 or 2 home games. what about the rest of season? so far we have only 1 out of conferernce home game scheduled for 2012,2013,2014,and 2015.we seem to look down our nose at utsa and tx.st., and then get upset when tcu and others look at us the same way. just saying...

  26. If I don't like a word, I redefine it. Shart (v) - the act of bringing friends and family to Apogee. EX: I sharted Chad and Ranjit to Homecoming and everyone had a great time - despite the mess.

  27. Some seem to want to aim low. We don't need UTSA, SWTSU of San Marcos, or any other FCS team boost attendance. Our recent OOC home games (K-State, Houston, Navy, Indiana) have seen to the task.

  28. UTSA and Texas State would actually play UNT home and home a regular basis. Those are games that have a decent chance to sellout and actually make UNT some money. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to schedule a home game that would sellout and make the school some money instead of taking an away game at Alabama for cash. So many posters on here have the exact same piss poor attitude that they claim other schools have about UNT.

  36. My wife and I brought her dad and step-mom to the Indiana game. The following Monday they were season ticket holders and sat with us for the FAU game. I agree, bringing folks from the area to a game is key. Perhaps a contest would be good to see how many season ticket holders you can create from the game day experience.

  38. No, it is the difference in having class and being a Tech/LSU fan. Just the way I was brought up. I never got in trouble for making noise when the other team had the ball, cheering for my team, etc..., but I was not allowed to boo the other team, use profanity or boo an official. Guess it came from the fact that my father was a coach at one time and also officiated games. I used to umpire baseball and it changed my whole perspective on getting mad at officials, unless they did something obvious or didn't know the rules.

  44. Ok assuming SMU and Houston go the the BEAST, and we get an invite to CUSA. Does a CUSA sans Stangs and Coogs do us much better than the Belt currently does?

  45. What evidence is there the UTSA will magically become an AQ team? They have a large TV market, but so do we. They play in an off campus stadium and have played 6 games - none of which are against FBS opponents - and have the same record we do. To say that they will be making huge conference leaps seems like a bit of a stretch.
    1 point
  46. Geez, this again? They haven't moved up to FBS yet, once they do, I am all for scheduling them to try and start a rivalry. Don't forget, you can not FORCE a rivalry upon your fanbase. Many rivalries happen over time or by a development of bad blood, not JUST close proximity. We had a pretty good rivalry developing with NMSU after the "Miracle in the Desert" in 2001 and then beating them here in 2002 to win the conference, and with MTSU after they got their panties in a wad over NT going to the First N.O. Bowl instead of them, then the cheap shot on our punt returner the next year. SMUt would be a rival for us because of their overall douchiness and our intolerance for said douchiness, plus our perception, be it true or not, of them keeping us out of CUSA.

  47. Why do so many UNT fans think our fan base will consider these schools as rivals? We have played TxSt 36 times and a rivalry never developed. Why would one develop now? Accepting them at this time will further convince our undevoted alums that we are truly small time. We have plenty of time. If we want them we can get them 5 years from now.
