  1. I usually tell my friends that I went to "THE" University of North Texas

  2. I would prefer as a compromise that we use "NT". If it's ok for Notre Dame (ND) to drop the U. it should be ok for us. Most USC fans simply refer to their school as "SC".

  9. I would consider myself a pretty big Rangers fan - I did have a 10 game pack this year and went to Opening Day as well. I gave up the opportunity to buy tickets for the ALCS so I could go the UNT game. I was really hoping for the Yankees last night so I could go to both, but when it didn't work out, my allegiance lies with my alma mater #1. Go Mean Green and Rangers!

  10. Chapel Hill Bulldogs defeated Bullard 50 - 6 Friday night. CH had 438 yards total offense in the FIRST HALF; scored TDs on all six first half possessions; and called off the "Dogs" after scoring about mid-way through the third quarter. CH/UNT commits: Andrew Tucker - suited up, but did not play. I have no idea if it was because of an injury (seemed fine; warmed up before game and at halftime) or if possibly he violated team rules. Rex Rollins - 107 yards rushing on 11 carries (9.7 yards per carry) and two rushing TDs. Sir Calvin Wallace - double-teamed as usual - was such a moose that he simply pushed one or both of the offensive linemen back toward the QB. He made several behind the line tackles; created several "hurries", and dropped his 300 + pounds on the QB more than once - but I did not notice him making any sacks. An interesting prospect (although I am sure that UNT will not take any more CH commits - too many other schools to mine) - Jay Reagan is the THIRD string RB and is a senior. Last night he ran for 126 yards on nine carries for a 14 yards per carry average - and he is averaging 7.42 yards per carry for the season (he was the feature back for CH for several games when both Rollins and Tucker were injured), and averaged 10 yards a carry last season. Next Week: Brownsboro

  15. Somehow, the higher-ups have decided that it has to be an "either-or" situation rather than a "both-and" situation. For decades, we have successfully been known as the Eagles with the nickname the "Mean Green." Since we changed our name to the University of North Texas, people have interchangeably referred to the school both as "North Texas" and "UNT" with no confusion whatsoever. You can say either "OU" or "Oklahoma," and people understand what you're saying either way, and no one gets offended. As far as schools that want to be known only by their initials, usually it's because they're embarrassed about their name. TCU tries to downplay the "Christian," SMU tries to downplay the "Methodist," just like KFC tries to downplay the "fried." Florida International sounds like an airport, so "FIU" it is. But why would we be ashamed of North Texas? We're proud of our state, we have a long history as "North Texas" in some form or another--what's to hide?

  18. The other thing I forgot to mention was the positive reputation and experience this coaching staff has will only help our position to get onto a bigger conference later on. When we start winning consistently, which I feel is going to happen very soon, we will be invited to a a new conference, at least Conference USA. Our facilities are good enough now, our coaches are top notch, and attendance has been great. We are averaging around 20,000 at our last couple home games and we haven't had a winning season in many years. How could anyone not be excited about the future of Mean Green football and athletics?

  20. The TX/OU game is at 11am. You can't get any better in the central time zone, and there really is no excuse for that ruining attendance. None. Even if you go to the game, you should be able to make it back to Denton for the UNT game. I have to be at a wedding tomorrow night at 6:30. So you can imagine my frustration. This is the only place I can vent about it too. (facebook friends and friends of friends). People... October to the end of the year is off limits for weddings. Period. Don't be selfish, move your wedding, you and your guests will have a better time. Huge weekend for sports fans in this city. What the hell were you thinking.

  22. This will be my first time tailgating a UNT football game. We, too, will be parking in the lot behind the dorms near the football field. Can anyone tell me what time they open & close the lots? Recommendations for what to bring (within reason) ... and, reiterating Army of Dad's note .... I cover commercial real estate and will be covering the game and new stadium for the publication I write for ... if there are any commercial real estate types, let me know and I'll give you my cell phone number to call me for where you're at and I'll come say hi and snap a photo ... my first time shooting a football game. I've covered high school games before in the old days as a stringer for the Dallas Times Herald (when I was writing for a daily paper in Northeast Texas ... so shooting the game will be fun and different.

  23. You are letting me off much too easily.....I like baseball, just not as much as I like UNT. Now, if it were a UNT baseball game that would be another matter in itself...you pick 'em in that regard. But, professional baseball vs UNT? Never even close to a choice having to be made.

  24. We might have to take you up on that Saturady. We will be bringing beer and can bring bacon wrapped dove breasts to share. Also, are there any commercial real estate GMGers coming to the game/tailgate this weekend? Army of Mom has a press pass for this game and finding some CRE people to include in the story would be cool and getting a UNT alum some free pub is always good. Reply here or PM me since she doesn't get on GMG as much as I do.

  25. It should be noted that UNT's game is Game 1 of seven remaining Sun Belt games.

  26. Really...didn't take much. I wonder what the record is regarding the significance of game one in a seven game series when it comes to the eventual series winner? Sure, always better to win game one than lose it, but didn't the Rangers lose game one of their five game series with Tampa Bay? Seems to me that game one of that series turned out to be pretty meaningless with regard to the eventual outcome. Please put your brains back in your head...it's very messy when brains explode I am told.

  27. Almost as absurd as someone calling one game a series. No one in this thread has yet (well, except you) said anything about the UNT game being more important that a complete ACLS "winnable series". I thought we were discussing missing game 1 of a seven game series to support your university as opposed to a professional team. Let's see...7 game series...home field advantage...4 games in Arlington perhaps, but at least two, right?
    1 point
  28. Well, one could argue with some vailidity that game one of a seven game series is pretty much meaningless as well. It's a matter of one's perrsonal chioce and priorities. Never said it was unfair...said it was all about priorities and choices. Your original post did not refer to "attracting attention"...it, I believe, was more along the lines of agreeing that one should forego the Mean Green to watch the Rangers. I think we can all agree that the Rangers will get much more "attention" Saturday than the Mean Green will, but most going to see the Rangers or watching on TV will probably have ZERO connection to the Mean Green...another reason for the Mean Green faithful to show up to support UNT and the Mean Green. Appreciate your attending...even if you have said that you would not be there if you had not already invited others to attend with you. Glad to have you in attendance even if your heart isn't in it for this game. With a win over FAU, I'll bet you'll be happy you came...no matter the reason.

  30. ALCS Tickets > UNT Tickets > ALCS on TV It's simple math, people.
    1 point
  31. Can't say I'd do the same. To me it's a no brainer to go to the ALCS if you have tickets. You know you'll have a million chances to see UNT play, but who knows the next time the Rangers will make it to the ALCS.

  32. We have players who line up at receiver, then run around the field the way receivers do. But, receivers go the additional step and catch the ball. That's the difference in what we have and what, maybe, other schools have. Again...hate to say it again...but the irony of having the "Spread Guru" Dodge here for four years and to have a roster so depleted and thin at QB and WR is stunning. Or,is it?

  33. So when you don't go to the games in person you can't be a fan? Interesting....
    1 point
  34. I'm going to speak of out frustration here, but I don't really care. If you are going to the Rangers game, that's awesome, I can't really blame you. However, if you are going to watch on TV, that is ridiculous. A professional baseball game on freaking TV should IN NO WAY take priority over watching your college team play in person. I would be embarrassed if I sat here in Denton watching the Rangers Saturday night instead of going to the NT game, and then called myself a fan the next day. There should be no comparison. I would trade the Rangers Franchise for a bowl appearance this year by NT. If we want to be big time, we better start acting like it. The chicken and the egg debate about attendance and wins/better conference can go on forever, but butts in the seats should be there whether we are winning or not, and whether the Rangers are playing in the ALCS or not. That is what we can control. I hope to see you Saturday.

  35. Not sure why some people feel the need to put that stadium down in an attempt to prop Apogee up. That stadium is awesome, and there are several things that I wish Apogee had, and likewise, there are some things that I'm glad Apogee doesn't have. All around though, that is a beautiful stadium.

  37. ...actually it's too bad that they lack the emotional wherewithal to consistently follow through on their organization's stated mission. The cheer staff and/or Talons could produce a training video and send the link, via e-mail, to all season ticket holders, MGC members, University staff, and all students with a University e-mail address. On game day, the cheer staff/Talons could go around the tailgating area on golf carts, and stop at various sites with high numbers of fans and hold an "impromptu" cheer training session. They could carry boom boxes to play the "musical prompts.. (including the lame one that sounds like the vegas-magic-act-segue-music".

  41. I have a problem with Mac's statement of "God" didn't give him great talent or great size...it seems like Mac goes out of his way to degrade the talent here. Julian is by far the best athlete on the team. He legitimately runs his 40 in the low 4.3s at 6'2 210. He broke the UNT broad jump record by over a foot! He can dunk a basketball by jumping flat-footed. The kid is an absolute freak of an athlete. If this kid was "football smart," he'd play on Sunday's, easily. Julian is a great kid too. I'm very glad that he's a member of the Mean Green and not those scumbags in Dallas. Before the year Mac said we were the smallest and slowest team in division one. Not only is that not true, but we've already played a team in the freaking big ten that was smaller AND slower than we were. It just seems like he's trying to take pressure off himself by misleading the public as to how much talent we have. Just my two cents. Go Mean Green!

  43. Given the product on the field the last several years. I can't say I blame people wanting to watch or go to the ALCS game vs the NT game. It is what it is. Win on the field and give people a reason to come to your game over other events and the stadium will be filled.

  44. I'd argue that fans who've spent years watching this thing develop in Arlington are invested and have a personal connection.

  45. You are 100% correct here. I currently place a greater priority in the ALCS than a regular season Sunbelt game. I understand that may be wrong, but I'm just being honest. So do I have the right to worry about attendance? I guess not.

  46. I gotta say that I completely support eppy4life on this one. Are you kidding me guys? It's the freaking ALCS. Those of you that say you would turn down tickets to a MAJOR playoff game in favor of going to see the Unt game are delusional. Now personally, I will be at the UNT game instead of watching the Rangers. I have to admit, the only reason I am skipping the Rangers game is because I promised to bring some friends to the UNT game before I knew what day the Rangers played. If I hadn't, would my eyes be glued to the TV watching the rangers game? hell yea they would. 95% of people feel the same way. Win on the field and then you'll become a priority, but don't call out people for missing a pretty much meaningless regular season football game for an ALCS Rangers game. That's foolish
