to me, there isn't a question as to which thing i would attend. north texas is my school...i am a part of it...the rangers, i am a fan, but am not part of it...didn't go to texas rangers school or ever play for them. i hope they win, but apogee is where we should be on saturday. rain is showing 20% chance at about 6pm, with winds in the teens...6 points

I don't see how bench seating is high schoolish when plenty of big time college football stadiums have plenty of bench seating.6 points

I would consider myself a pretty big Rangers fan - I did have a 10 game pack this year and went to Opening Day as well. I gave up the opportunity to buy tickets for the ALCS so I could go the UNT game. I was really hoping for the Yankees last night so I could go to both, but when it didn't work out, my allegiance lies with my alma mater #1. Go Mean Green and Rangers!5 points

Revised prediction... UNT wins 27-24 this weekend. 18,358 will attend. 3,687 bastards will still be tailgating during the game and never make it in. 4,532 people will leave at halftime because UNT will be up by 2 touchdowns and so they think we have it in the bag. 2,178 more people will leave in the last 5 minutes because we just gave up our lead and are tied with FAU driving to score and go ahead. The remaining 11,648 will see UNT defense step up and get a turnover and we drive down for a game winning field goal. 5845 people stay for the school song…only 39 know the words. 3 men from an older generation have a legitimate sports cry after seeing 2 home wins in the same season. 1 guy is really sweaty wearing an eagle costume. Those are my predictions.5 points

Not really sure why some of you need to label this thing as a competition? Apogee looks like a beautiful stadium and is one of the crown jewels of Sun Belt stadiums now. FAU's stadium is another one. Both programs have made a committment to bettering themselves and thats the important thing. I have no idea why a concrete stadium is considered "better" than a steel one. Nor do I understand the angst people (and its not just you guys, other fans as well) toward steel construction. What difference does it make? Both stadiums cost approximately the same amount, but as one poster said each program fixated on different things. Thats great, it means the 'Belt has two new stadiums with completely different feels and looks. I tihnk you will not find a more detailed 'Themed" stadium in NCAA than FAU's. The beach, palm trees, ocean are all integral to its make up. 1.) The walk ways around the stadium are not just poured concrete but are actually made up of sea shells. 2.) There is white beach sand surrounding the palm trees that flank the entrance gates. 3.) The Priority lounge is done "tiki style" with desigins in the floor to simulate a wood deck. 4.) You can see the ocean from the top 2 levels of the suites, the press box and the roof. I have been up there. You can easily see yachts and cruise ships going by. I gurantee that ESPN/CSS will have a camera up there for location shots. Its a beautiful thing, truly. To attempt degrade it by calling it an "erector" set just comes off as petty and childish. Enjoy your stadium. Its beautiful. No need to hate on ours, its beautiful as well.4 points

I'm going to speak of out frustration here, but I don't really care. If you are going to the Rangers game, that's awesome, I can't really blame you. However, if you are going to watch on TV, that is ridiculous. A professional baseball game on freaking TV should IN NO WAY take priority over watching your college team play in person. I would be embarrassed if I sat here in Denton watching the Rangers Saturday night instead of going to the NT game, and then called myself a fan the next day. There should be no comparison. I would trade the Rangers Franchise for a bowl appearance this year by NT. If we want to be big time, we better start acting like it. The chicken and the egg debate about attendance and wins/better conference can go on forever, but butts in the seats should be there whether we are winning or not, and whether the Rangers are playing in the ALCS or not. That is what we can control. I hope to see you Saturday.4 points

Nolan Ryan, who never played a game of college ball in his life, is clearly conspiring against UNT's growth and eventual affiliation with an AQ conference.4 points

Man, you guys are some proud Mean Green faithful! I am, too - that doesn't mean we cannot be happy for FAU. When you are in an ocean front area, you look at different amenities for your demographic target. We wanted a strong, concrete home - but these guys have watched UCF do really well with their erector set and went for aesthetics. We both spent about the same amount but we just spent it differently. Our stadium is incredible - and will age really nicely. Their stadium kind of "fits" for that area. The ocean breeze mixed with the high tone Boca Raton crowd - they had to pick their battles. The guys on the Belt board talk about the Boca fans as if they are snobs - they have valet parking at the Wal-Mart... so they catered to the demo and went for seat backs, decor, and 6,000 seats with access to mixed drinks at 4 different levels. They are trying to build an identity. Completely different situation from our's and both schools chose the right path in my opinion.4 points

Two team narratives at work, but both are very similar. One team was in shambles and slowly rebuilt from the ground up. Everyone saw little return early and found plenty of reasons to second guess and nitpick the new leader. Still, he stayed the course and kept learning. This process really started four years ago, but most of the benefits of his approach would take at least two years to be visible outside the diehards. Now, everyone who invested in that journey has a great chance to see the final payoff for that investment and dedication. There was no urgency to watch every single game when the process started -- it was more about kids getting experience, building reps, figuring out roles and unlocking potential. The progress was not a crucial in game moment, it was about following the narrative of the team and seeing what happens. Another team we all love is starting a similar journey and the same process has hopefully begun (because it's pretty similar so far.) I know UNT is on the right path, and I will be at the game, but the idea of this game being more important than a winnable ALCS series is just absurd. Caring about the Rangers doesn't make you any more or less of a UNT fan and anyone who wants to beat up anyone for making a perfectly reasonable sports argument is just being...I don't even know the word...stubborn, idealistic, biased? Worst case scenario -- attendance is down for one home date, but the bigger picture is what will ultimately pay off for the program. It's when people stop caring or believing in that vision you need to start worrying.3 points

I gotta say that I completely support eppy4life on this one. Are you kidding me guys? It's the freaking ALCS. Those of you that say you would turn down tickets to a MAJOR playoff game in favor of going to see the Unt game are delusional. Now personally, I will be at the UNT game instead of watching the Rangers. I have to admit, the only reason I am skipping the Rangers game is because I promised to bring some friends to the UNT game before I knew what day the Rangers played. If I hadn't, would my eyes be glued to the TV watching the rangers game? hell yea they would. 95% of people feel the same way. Win on the field and then you'll become a priority, but don't call out people for missing a pretty much meaningless regular season football game for an ALCS Rangers game. That's foolish3 points

Unless you are actually going to the Rangers game (which I personally would not over a NT game), who cares? Just DVR it and support your team. NT really should take priority.3 points

HOME GAME TOMORROW @ 7pm. Please come out and support them if you can! Here is my preview of the game in way more detail than many of you probably care for, but following this team closely is one of my favorite parts of being a NT fan, so here it goes: Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 - 7 p.m. Troy Trojans (7-5-1, 2-2-0 Sun Belt) at North Texas Mean Green (9-3-1, 4-0-0 Sun Belt) Mean Green Soccer Complex (1,000) - Denton, Texas Series History: North Texas leads 7-0-0 Last Meeting: W, 3-1 (10/8/2010) at Troy The Trojans' 7-5 Record is a little deceiving, with their wins coming against inferior competition. If we're being realistic, the likes of Alcorn State, Presbyterian, and Alabama State are not on the same level as even the bottom tier Sun Belt teams. While we are on the subject of bottom tier Sun Belt teams, ULL and ULM are the only common opponents so far this year between Troy and NT. Troy also went 2-0 against the teams, beating ULL 2-0 and ULM 4-0. Both of those games were played at home. Troy has not won outside of the state of Alabama, while NT is 5-0-1 at home, and 7-1-1 in the state of Texas this year. Troy will be dangerous if the team overlooks them, but after last year, I think this team is out to prove something and is not overlooking anyone. Mean Green Matt Prediction: 3-1 NT2 points

You are 100% correct here. I currently place a greater priority in the ALCS than a regular season Sunbelt game. I understand that may be wrong, but I'm just being honest. So do I have the right to worry about attendance? I guess not.2 points
-
I'd argue that fans who've spent years watching this thing develop in Arlington are invested and have a personal connection.2 points
-
I honestly think that attendance is one of the most important things. Not for the reason of revenue though, but because it is hard to convince others to care about us when it appears that we don't care about ourselves. The people on this board are not the problem, but it should be more motivation to drag as many people into Apogee stadium as possible.2 points
-
Man I guess I am missing the point, I thought we were talking about college stadiums, my bad..2 points

Not sure why some people feel the need to put that stadium down in an attempt to prop Apogee up. That stadium is awesome, and there are several things that I wish Apogee had, and likewise, there are some things that I'm glad Apogee doesn't have. All around though, that is a beautiful stadium.2 points

Yes you do. But frankly I think attendance will be more hurt by weather than the ALCS. ALCS on TV verse NT game changes to ALCS in comfort on TV verses uncomfortable NT game.1 point

Actually it wasn't built as an Olympic Stadium, since it opened nearly a decade before the 1932 Olympics. Permanent seats didn't replace all the bleachers until 1993 after both Olympic games (there were some seats before that - they did it gradually over 70 years).1 point

100% disagree. I'm not sure who you're referring to but this Ranger fan cares a great deal about the Rangers and MLB, has a mini-plan, went to the ALDS, ALCS and 2 World Series games last year and has pre-purchased World Series tickets for this year. (Game 4 tickets because game 3 is on Saturday, 10/22, a home UNT game) You can care a great deal about the Rangers but put UNT ahead of them. It's all about priorities...1 point

Your post didn't deserve any -'s from me but I'm deeply concerned about this comment. I'm going to hold back from firing cannons at your bow since I am also a fan of the Rangers. This is a simple decision, but the DVR made it even easier. The only frustrating part will be not yelling at the D-bags who decide to yell the final score... hate it when that happens.1 point

I like the wings at apogee from the inside and don't think they look bad from the outside as they give a "what the hell" kind of reaction in a good way. BUT, they look a little erector set as well.....1 point
-
Why would we want all seats? Backs to the bleachers maybe, but name ONE major COLLEGE stadium that is made up of mostly individual seats. The are bleachers so you can pack more people inside. He'll remember when Michigan expanded their stadium to over 108 thousand. Not one piece of construction equipment. They just moved the seat numbers closer together and poof. More "seats".1 point

It's confusing. Some of the shots pan across the stadium and clearly show 100% seat backs, and the announcer clearly says "all seat backs". But then there are a couple shots that show the student section with no seat backs. So, removable? Nearly every major stadium has bleacher seating. I think it lends itself better to the idea of "packed like sardines." I like that.1 point

There will be no merger... that would be 22 teams. No way that is going to happen with the way NCAA basketball revenues are allocated.1 point
-
Couple of thoughts- -SMU to the SEC is laughable -Big East will add East Carolina over Marshall -Big East will be an AQ conferance because the conference is in that Eastern Media market UNT's only hope in all of this realignment is if the MWC and CUSA want to maintain a presence in DFW/Texas for recruiting.1 point
-
That would make C-USA a lot less attractive to join. I'd still join, but I wouldn't be thrilled doing it.1 point

hey, the kid may just need a change of scenery. It could happen here at the home of the Mean green as well. With all the work these kids put in and with all the pressure they are under to perform, you can't blame anyone for wanting to go where they may have a better chance of seeing playing time. It sort of looks like that is over for Gilbert at UT. I'd be happy to have him enroll here at UNT, but UN has three rather young QB's developing right now, so UNT may not be the best place for Gilbert at the moment. The kid had great numbers in HS and was recruited by some of the top tier universities in the country, so he does have some talent and abilities. Sometimes it just takes a change of scenery...seems to me that a young QB named Aikman transferred out of OU for the west coast, right? Kid had a pretty decent career as I recall.1 point

Like! I managed to buy two season tickets which means if I can pull that off so can anyone else. It also means I will have an extra ticket to every basketball game so if you are a young cute female looking for a good time PM me1 point
-
On a much more pressing note...what do you think UNT chances are against FAU Saturday? At this point, what the Big Whatever does or doesn't do has no effect on the most important thing happening for UNT this weekend, and that's the game with FAU. Let's see UNT go out and kick some FAU rear ends Saturday! That's the pressing most important thing!1 point

Offsides people! Offsides! I was only kidding. I would be interested in Gilbert, but I dont know how good he is or how could our qbs could be if put in better situations. Hope that fran joke got the blood flowing early everyone.1 point

For the first time in a long many years UNT has a HC that is working hard to help increase attendance. The guy never stops trying to get rears into Apogee. If you are a member of the Mean green nation you just have to love what he is doing. I hope some of this bleeds off to both our head basketball coaches as I would also love for the Super Pit to become a real home court advantage. I don't care if the SI office helps create these messages or not...it comes with Coach Mac's signature and Coach Mac's "ask". It's a great idea and he should be applauded and thanked for his efforts to increase attendance.1 point
