  4. We may be a sleeping giant- that has been well-established- but I'm assuming the Big 12 is looking for a team that's already awake.

  5. We literally didn't have funds available to hire Dan McCarney as a head coach back then. What did Dodge get, less than $250K as a head coach? It has been said that we couldn't even meet Jim Harbaugh's salary desires, and he was looking to leave D-II San Diego, not San Diego State. Buying out Dickey's contract, which was also low by most standards just killed us. I think we can all agree that the student fee for the new stadium and having a somehwat pro-athletics BOR now has seemingly moved us out of the outhouse!!

  7. You know how lots of posters hate conference realignment talk or uniform talk? My kryptonite is discussing the band's look and sound. I know the Green Brigade is great, I just never go to a game to hear the band--I go to watch the game. As long as they play the alma mater and the fight song at the appropriate time, I am cool with them. Now, if we create a Band Forum, I am gonna tear them to shreds and talk about how they are a sleeping giant that the Big XII really should invite based on their superior potential.

  8. Apogee is not that uncommon a word. Since it means "highest point" it's a great name for a football stadium.

  10. Not talking about us. We need to show we can sell out a new, small college football stadium before we even get a first glance.

  11. Very indirectly . . . Surely they'd have to be talking about TCU? Houston would be the only other possibility.

  12. I was a Notre Dame fan from the age of 5 ever since I saw them on TV play against Colorado in 1985 or 86. I had Notre Dame everything, even painted my room gold, had a ND watch, ND pencils, room was devoted to ND, wore a ND shirt 3 days a week. My friend this year offered to take me, all expenses paid, to the Notre Dame - Michigan game on September 10th as a wedding gift. I told him I couldn't go because UNT had a home game that day, not only a home game the first at the new stadium. He is still not happy with me, but I would not have missed that or any other UNT game for another team, ever. ND may have been my first love, and I still love them, but UNT is my school and the school I support and will watch over any other team.

  14. Man, I say Kudoo's to the city of Denton, TX. With the economy the way it is Denton needs the Hotel and Restaurant business. Plus all the big wig Sooner's will be in attendance. Maybe UNT can get a 2 and 1 deal with OU once they see that Denton can handle their fan base while here. There's no way you can miss Apogee stadium once in Denton. If RV and others with UNT are smart they'll take notice of Denton welcoming OU and do a little vertical marketing with OU. I don't think anyone in the Mean Green nation would be unhappy with a home game against OU. I would take work, and skill on RV's part, but I've seen good sales people make things happen with less opportunity. Maybe the parents of some OU kids have other siblings that can't get into OU. Now those parents will get to see Denton and UNT for what it is, a great college town. A friend of mine is big OSU grad, and at one time was the President of their Alumni association. One of his sons went to UNT. both of his kids are talented musicians. My friends other son is in a band that regularly plays the Viper Room in LA.

  15. i have...and i lived...people today are much more wussified than in the past...a band should be in a uniform...not shorts/shirt/hat...a uniform the consists of pants with suspenders and a jacket that is a pain in the ass to button! sound is great...looks are great...combine the two and the band will kick more ass than previously kicked!

  17. I love the future of our defense with guys mentioned in this article. Brett lists "Sarge" as a sophomore....everything I can find has him as a junior. I hope that we somehow got an extra year of eligibility for him. He was in the Army, and didn't play any college ball anywhere else....so maybe he's just a soph.? Anyway, good article: http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/drc/sports/stories/DRC_untfoot_0929.1aea8ee27.html

  22. Well, didn't we finish 4th in the West this past season? They are predicting that even after losing almost every key player, we will perform about the same as a senior-heavy squad from the prior year. One could argue that they are being overly optimistic.

  23. We finished 4th in the West last year and wound up being a 3pt. shot away from going to the NCAA's. It's not a death knell.

  28. Just a quick rundown on UNT’s Chapel Hill Bulldog commits (Chapel Hill number one 3-A team in the state) from last Friday’s game against Lindale: Sir Calvin Wallace – I am unaware if he played – he has had an ankle injury since a preseason scrimmage and had missed the first four games of the season. Rex Rollins – the running back played in his first game since Week 0 (suffered a knee injury). He ran for 127 yards on 9 attempts, including TD runs of 66 and 50 yards. Andrew Tucker – he did not play a week ago after being injured in the Carthage game (hamstring injury). This past Friday night he rushed for 101 yards and two TDs. He also, playing linebacker, had 13 tackles; one pass break-up; and caused a fumble. GMG

  29. Great stuff...love these "Pine Curtain" reports. Do keep 'em coming. I have it on good authority that you have some "inside scoop" on things out in the east texas badlands. For me, I am just glad to see UNt heading back east to the Tyler area to look at these kids. may become a recruiting hotbed for UNT. And, yes, you are correct, Sir...the CH team is LOADED!

  30. It would be a disastrous year if UNT somehow ended up 4th in the West. I know UNT will be "young" in some very real cases, but this is just not an intelligent prediction. I think SUMG is correct...I'll wait on a few more publications before I get excited about this one..agree that Lindy's is not in the top tier.

  32. This is all well and good, but perception is reality sir. As far as perception goes: TCU is a football powerhouse school and may as well have 50K students enrolled, an entire metroplex area frothing at the mouth to watch them play, and money out the wazoo. UNT is a football also-ran school and may as well have 4K students enrolled, a message board of die-hard fans and an apathetic remainder fan base, and $0. Facts are not necessary when trying to reach the paying customers. This is where we are right now. Now, if we win... perception changes!

  34. Just asking here...what does the Mean Green Club have to do with replica jerseys or game worn jerseys? These two things have absolutely nothing to do with each other if you think about it even a little. You Mean green Club membership supports student athletic scholarships. The Mean green Club does not sell any merchandise that i am aware of at this time.

  38. I was actually pleasantly surprised: Only 2 Belt teams, and 3 AQ teams. We had times where it seemed like UNT, F_U, NMSU, LaMo, and LaLa were seasonal residents. Memphis is looking terrible this year, and UNM has just lost its wheels.

  39. Uh, on the very few occasions I have sat along the railing I have thought about just that scenario in advance. Failing to have a plan is planning to fail. You had better believe I am doing my best to catch a foul ball that is on my side of the railing if it my team's turn at the plate. If it is my fielder trying to make the play I am trying to get out of his way and let him get the out. As yet, I haven't had a chance to put my plan into action, but one day...

  41. So long as the city doesn't 'decorate' the town with OU crap everywhere, it's not that big of a deal. I do agree that it's piss poor they haven't even made the slightest bit of effort in this regard for the home town team. I guess picking OU is fine, but they still can't support UNT because it would be unfair to TWU. That's the excuse, right?

  43. i have a summer home in ruidoso, and keep up with nmsu and to some extent nm. they really don't have the financial resourses one might think. both universities had to make major budget cuts in athletics, and reason n.m.didn't fire head coach last year is they couldn't afford to buy him out. they negoiated his buy out down, and fired him as soon as they could. new mexico is a poor state, and the 2nd largest recipient of federal funds, only behind alaska.having said this, i love the state, and really enjoy albuquerque, so take what i said in stride.

  44. 1) I usually go to a Texas game to start the year (tradition-thing with the SO) and the Longhorn Band has NEVER come out in full uniform for the first few games of the year. It's both the heat and the uniforms, but that isn't unusual at all. Nobody cares by the time they hit "Orange and White." 2) The GB sounds - impressive. The acoustics of Apogee certainly help, but there's such an incredibly high level of musicianship, it's easy to get spoiled quick and start worrying about other things, like uniforms. 3) The Music Department has done so much to make UNT relevant as an institution that if they wanted the band to wear peacock outfits with 90's "rising meatball" UNT logos while being called the prancing diddlys, I'm cool with it. 4) It was good to hear the swing fight song again! Been awhile since we've had a reason to use it. 5) Best friend in high school was in the flag corps to get chicks. He married one of them outta high school and has been with her for 5 years. I played football in high school for a (now) 5A all-male school. So did my ex-boyfriend. Appearances are almost always deceiving.

  45. Tulsa is nice. Hilly and green. The west side by the refineries ain't pretty; but that's across the river. TU is on the other side of Tulsa. My biggest problem in Tulsa was the hilly roads after snow and ice. Plus, it took their city council a looooooong time to expand roads. Up by where I lived, Jenks and the Union areas were really growing, yet roads were still two lanes, one each way. So, if someone had to take a left, it stopped up traffic behind it. There were few turn lanes. Since I graduated in 2003, they've done some road widening. Old Tulsa Money folk wanted to keep Tulsa small. In that regard, surprisingly, Oklahoma City, thought to be more blue collar, was more progressive infrastructure-wise through the 1990s and early 2000s. That's why OKC got the NBA team. They had the facilities already to house it. And, the business leaders and city council wanted it. Tulsa also got a new arena, but it was a little late. What Tulsa needs is the kind of mayors and business leaders OKC had in the 1990s and 2000s. Tulsa really is the prettier city.

  46. I dare each and every one of you wear wear one of those stupid band uniforms. Look at a uniform. Look at it. Band uniforms are one of the dumbest "traditions" that we have out there in this country. They were originally supposed to be quasi-military uniforms, I guess...and then they have transformed from there. I'd say our Green Brigade members resemble musicians much more than military servicemen/women... I really don't think matching t-shirts are all that important, but that just gives them a "uniform" look. Wear green and get over it. What a stupid waste of energy to discuss this. THEY SOUNDED GREAT, AND LOOKED JUST FINE! If they show up, play well, and root on the football team...maybe even prompting the crowd to get into it, then great! The band is there to enhance the football game experience, and it just so happens that our band is better than 99% of any other one out there... If they didn't come to the games, our stadium would look even more empty. This thread should be erased and forgotten. Oh, wait, what was I thinking, if the Green Brigade was wearing uniforms, we'd be 4 - 0...I'm sorry. Forgive me for being so stupid.

  47. Yes they do. Plus, this is the kind of job that Leach would love. He would get to recruit Texas, play against Tech to put the screws to them, and he would be at a place that is under the radar, so he can be as crazy as he wants to be without a lot of media scrutiny. It wouldn't shock me at all if this is his next head coaching gig.

  49. University of New Mexico sports are typically abysmal unless cheating is involved, but the university has a history of turning a blind eye towards violations. Dave Bliss was discovered to have been paying players from a slush fund at SMU prior to being hired at New Mexico. He stayed at New Mexico for 11 years and is the school's all-time winningest coach. Under Bliss, the Lobos went to seven NCAA tournaments, and notched the only four NCAA tournament wins in school history. Baylor subsequently hired Dave Bliss, and after Baylor's unofficial policies resulted in a player's death, it was revealed that Bliss had been paying players from a slush fund at Baylor.
