An Open Letter to University of North Texas Students from Head Football Coach Dan McCarney First and foremost I have to say THANK YOU to all the students for the support that you showed this football team in the Houston game! Every player on this team said that it was the best atmosphere that they have ever played in. I said in my postgame press conference and would like to reiterate here that I was emotional when I came out from the locker room and saw the student turnout. It was a special night and I just wish our performance on the field could have matched the enthusiasm and passion that the students and the whole crowd brought to the game. We are building this football program one piece at a time. Primarily, we have to develop a level of character that will transcend the field of competition. As a coaching staff, we are demanding that our players are accountable for everything they do, from going to class, to the way they present themselves in the community and as contributors to this team. It is not going to happen overnight, but we feel that if we create an environment of responsibility it will pay off in the long run. There is nothing that I want more than success for this program, and I am probably more impatient than anyone, but I also understand you cant change the culture overnight. In our first three games we have played one of the toughest schedules ever at North Texas. We are the only team in America that has faced three undefeated opponents and it looks like there is a good chance all three of those teams could finish the season undefeated. We have made improvement and I am confident that we will continue to improve and we will win some games this year. I am again asking for your support this weekend when we play Indiana. It is the first time ever that a team from the Big 10 Conference has traveled to Denton. They are used to playing in front of crowds that exceed 75,000, but based upon what I saw against Houston, I know that Apogee Stadium can be every bit as intimidating. Like I said before, it begins and ends with the students. You are the energy that this team fuels from. The student body is what this team plays for. I implore you to be patient as we build this program into one that you can be proud of. The transition is tough, but the end result will be worth waiting for. It takes a collaborative effort to succeed at the highest level in anything you do and we know that we cant do it without your support. Go Mean Green, Dan McCarney Head Football Coach University of North Texas This post has been promoted to an article3 points

This isn't about this year. This is the product of not winning more than 3 games in any season since 2004. This is the percption we face. Want it to change? Gotta win.3 points

I think it's kind of cool to see the excitement. To anyone that thinks these uniforms don't mean something to these kids, this seems to be evidence to the contrary. Good for them.2 points

We bought 40 tickets for our reunion on Wednesday. We got section 102. another 40 got their own tickets.2 points

Send him out to west Texas. All the energy companies are hiring. I'll say it again, IU in 2011 is the same as MTSU in 01. We whip them up and down the field kicking off a great winning streak. This team just needs something to go right for them to boost their confidence. IU is the cure.2 points

Micah is doing great. Graduates this May with his Mechanical Energy Engineering degree in hand with 3.6 gpa.... Anyone looking for a young engineer hook em up....Went to the Houston game with Micah and could see the pride he has in his team and school. Rough 4 years with injuries. Strange feeling looking out on the field and not seeing your son play for the first time since he was 8 yr old. miss it, but then again it was fun in the stands with him...2 points

So you trade one of the 10 best QBs in the league? Then who do you play at QB? Apparently you have forgotten how hard it was to find a replacement for Mr. Aikman. Something that didn't happen until the Cowboys lucked into Romo. Do you really trust Jerrrah to find a superstar QB in the draft? Because that is the only level of NFL QB that is above Tony Romo right now. You do realize trading Romo would put the Cows in full blown rebuilding mode, leading to at least 2 season of 3-13 to 5-11 recorfds, right? It always amazes me the group think that goes on in Cowboy land. It's nothing new. It's been going on since Gary Hogeboom replaced Danny White as the starting QB in 1984. Even Tom Landry bent to that group think... for 5 games. I guess Denver should have traded Elway when he didn't win a Superbowl by the age of 31? Miami dang sure should have unloaded Marino, because he is going on 50 without a ring. If any guy couldn't win the big one, it's big Dan, right? Tony Romo has the bad fortune of being the QB on a slightly above NFL average Cowboy teams while enjoying life just a little too much. He should be home studying film every waking moment of his life that he isn't on the practice field or in the game. He shouldn't even be allowed to watch any movies on the team flight, right? He should be watching film. Long way to go in Tony's Career. This is a team game, and unless the Cowboys get better at a whole host of positions that don't start with a Q, Tony Romo will never win a championship. The Cows are lucky to have a top 10 QB. Trading him in his prime would be the dumbest thing Jerry Jones has done since the Spring of 1994.2 points

I have no problem with the band taking up the "good seats" - they are students, too - and for too many years, they were a large part of the student section since many of the non-band students had other things to do rather than attend the games. Enjoy the good seats - enjoy the game, Green Brigade!2 points

I don't find this article quite as glaringly bitter as usual. He actually doesn't name Dickey as the greatest thing since the birth of Jesus, nor does he explicitly compare Todd Dodge to sub-Saharan genocide. I do sometimes wonder if anyone ever writes the DRC regarding Brett's obvious chip that he shoulders like it's as weighty as Atlas' globe. Then again, if there were no Brett Vito searching for any crack in the wall that he can find, there would probably be no UNT coverage at all, and there's no such thing as bad publicity, right? Right?2 points

We get some people on here that do nothing but talk negative talk about how we can't win, won't win, or shouldn't win. Maybe they should go to another thread farther south down by Dallas. All this negativity makes a lot of us p.o.'d. Go Mean Green -------------GO NORTH TEXAS Scrappyman11 point

They play in the Big Ten. So what? They're not big at all. They have 6 300 pounders. We have 12. They're not fast. They lost to a freaking bottom of the barrel MAC school. They gave up almost 400 yards to a freaking 1-AA school. They are the equivalent of Washington State in the Pac-10, and Iowa State in the Big 12. If their conference affiliation is the only reason you think we "can't win," then you should quit watching football. All that said, I mean no disrepect to Indiana. I hope y'all have a wonderful time in Denton, but I'm very disappointed in some of the fans on here. I don't mind if you don't think we can win, but I need to hear a better reason than "they're in the Big Ten." Go Mean Green!1 point

We should know, they just played here two years ago. I'd say boring, but not ugly.1 point

They went out in those new black jerseys and stampeded the Marshall Thundering Herd 44-7 in a rivalry game. It's their first win over Marshall in 11 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM39lYg5yes http://www.register-herald.com/todayssportsfront/x1660697131/Herd-trampled-at-Ohio1 point

Romo to the Browns for Colt McCoy. McCoy is actually from Texas, he hates golf and sex so we don't have to worry about him trying to qualify for the U.S. Open or trying to score with every blonde celebrity out there rather than studying his playbook...and he wears cowboy hats, impossible to wear backwards.1 point

If they do that, with the team they have, then it will be a loss for them. Indiana is not a great team and if they underestimate us, we can win, especially at home.1 point

You have to be grateful for this kind of effort from the head coach. UNT have never seen this much involvement from any of its head coaches. Every HC at UNT should take note of Coach Mac's efforts and do some of the exact same things. Thank you Coach mac. Count me as a very grateful alum.1 point

GREAT letter, something I haven't seen from a football coach since I began bleeding green. I did notice that he didn't address the alumni in the letter. Us alums have to get the alum side more into the game. We need to get the new season ticket holders on that side used to standing and cheering as much as they can BEFORE the "sitting on your hands" culture begins to get settled in at Apogee. It would make a lot more sense for both parties. Big 12 needs to stay viable, TCU needs a conference that doesn't have its closest opponent 1000 miles away.1 point

Also, if you think about it, Coach McCarney and staff have only coached 3 games here. Less than a month ago, they had coached 0 games here. Coach Dickey did some great things while here. Coach Dickey did some bone-headed things while here as well. Same goes for Dodge (although the bone-headed things certainly outnumbered the great things for him). So it's fine to hear about those things... in moderation. What content do you expect from a beat reporter's BLOG (not newspaper stories, I've noticed the Dickey love/Dodge vitrol is truncated in the paper stories) if there is nothing to write about but the past? He probably had a million newspaper stories and blog entries about the new stadium over the past few months (because that's all that was going on), but I don't see anyone venting about going over the same old stadium news. Our history is our history. Vito was not here for the MVC glory years, or even the great 1-AA dominant years. So we can't expect him to have an opinion, in a blog, or in print on those days. The opinions we will see are ones from the years he's been covering UNT football. That includes DD years, TD years, & DM months. If coach McCarney is a winner like we all percieve him to be, then the stories will turn from "The Great Dickey" to, "The Great McCarney". If he is a failure, I'm sure we'll hear about the "The McCarney Fiasco". And, the more games we play, the further away coach Dodge's regime falls in the rearview mirror and the less we have to hear about it. At least, I hope so... Brett, you would move on from Dodge bashing/Dickey love if coach McCarney gives you something to write about... right?1 point

I am fed up hearing how great things were during the Dickey years and how horrible they have been during the Dodge regime. He keeps overstating the obvious. How about writing about current conditions and our aspirations? We don't need to be reminded daily about how bad things have been for the last six years. We've lived through it and we're trying to get past it, not relive it. One more of these trips through memory lane and I'm done with reading about us in either the Denton Record-Chronicle or the Dallas Morning News. I'll eventually get my information from the athletic website or this board. It may not be as timely but I'll enjoy it more.1 point

You did not just post about game prices did you? Any time I see someone post that prices are too high they get jumped on, so I feel for you. I guess people don't understand sometimes that times are tough, and getting together $24 (Over 100% increase) can actually be hard for some. So I have to say good luck to you as you wont get much love here when posting about prices.1 point

I guess I'd just like to see if we're capable of being more than a lower rung Sunbelt team before begging the perceived next best conference to let us in. Are we? The teams all over the landscape of college football upgrading their conference are not their current conference's bottom dwellers.1 point

I've got to agree. And I think we take a MWC slot yesterday, if offered.1 point

No way. Boise State coming here now would be light years ahead of what it was like in the old Big West days--and light years away from us hosting Troy. Fresno State, Nevada, Colorado State, Hawaii, New Mexico, UNLV, and SDSU all have major skins on the wall in the two major sports. There is no way that Arkansas State, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky, or South Alabama could match up with those MWC schools in gaining the attention of fans.1 point

Well this thread took an odd and unexpected turn. Certainly not agreeing with Cheapy McCheaperson and his apparently all non-alumni professorial cronies...but what if UNT dropped the price a touch for just the wing zone? I was really surprised the Houston game was not a sell out...even more surprised that the wing zone (rather than the corners) was only about 2/3 full most of the day. $10 wing zone (or maybe upper wing zone? Not sure if that'd be do-able)...$20 for GA...$35 reserved. I know many feel that cost drives up perceived value...but I also think that assumes a lot of other factors, one of which being a quality product (which I'm sorry, we really haven't seen for 10 of the 12 quarters this team has played). Baring just a remarkable improvement in coaching and performance, the product isn't selling tickets...and apparently the stadium isn't to the point where it can sell out the first game against an in-state opponent. Even as I'm writing this I'm questioning my words...but the AD may need to think up something to help sell this place out...product and new-ness didn't hack it...it may be gimmick time.1 point

Putting it all on UNT is stupid, considering the fact that it's part of a public university system and bigger schools have more juice in Austin. UNT was kept out of the SWC because member schools saw the direction we were going in enrollment. They were afraid we'd overshadow the smaller private schools in Fort Worth and Dallas by the sheer volume of our student body. Over time, this is happening. You can't put as many alumni into the area as UNT has done the past 20 years and not become a regional player.1 point

You make some very valid points… I understand the OOC scheduling issue all too well. We’ll play Iowa and nine Big 12 games every year now. That makes it incredibly difficult to schedule games with other local (relatively) teams on a regular basis. Northern Iowa fans accuse us of ducking them too. Playing home and homes with Utah, UConn, Army, etc. dropped them from the non-con. However, since Nebraska is leaving we have UNI on the schedule going forward to replace the gate money (UNI games are always sell-outs). That said, from an outsiders perspective, I can see why there is animosity here towards SMU. UNT has played you guys even up on the field for the last 20 years (when you play each other). I don’t know why you are surprised when your condescension elicits the responses you get. Interesting discussion... One thing I do know is that all fanbases are basically the same.1 point
