  1. We're not big enough yet. But, the home games are more fun now.

  2. I'm starting to think we don't need a fanbase. Maybe our team should play to an empty stadium on purpose. We have waaaay waaaay too many things that will "cause people not to come inside stadium at all." We get LITERALLY all day to drink, eat, and play during our tailgates. Hell, you can drink all Friday night if you want...I did. And we are, seriously, complaining that for three hours we're forced to endure the torture of college football...our Alma mater's football team by the way...without beer????!!! And here I was thinking it was the product on the field that needed fine tuning.

  3. Houston only drew 5k more because our stadium only holds 31k. I think your program and UH's program are very similar from a few years ago. It took a committed administration to really start our ascent. And a whole lot of leg work from dedicated alums and students to rally the support. Great job on the beautiful stadium, you have us beat there. Looking forward to seeing you guys in Houston next year. Good luck to the rest of your season. I will be following your team and rooting for you. GMG!

  4. Well this is my first post of the gmg board. I have a few personal opinons of last nights game. For your reading pleasure I have broken it down into the Good, Bad, Ugly, and the Hopeful. Well first the Good things I noticed from the game. However, some of these have nothing to do with the game its self but just the overall atmosphere. 1. Tailgating - I love that we now have this beautiful area of grass and trees now to tailgate on. There is plenty of room to expand on this old golf course. No more partying in a parking lot. 2. Attendance - I am so glad the mean green faithful showed up in full force last night to support our team. They say the stadium can hold just under 31,000. I'm sure we can squeeze in a couple more thousand. Even though it was not a sell out last night it was still a great turnout. 3. The 12th man, we successfully had risen the 12th man in the second quarter when UH had to take a timeout due to crowd noise. 4. Our team played well in the first half, besides a few turnovers. 5. Momentum - I personally felt that the team and crowd really increased the momentum going into the second half. Now for the Bad. 1. As an recent grad who purchased the recent grad season tickets over in section 115 and 116. I am disappointed that the left over seats in this section we sold to the UH fans. I end up standing with the students in 117 because there was to much red down by my seat. I would ask that the university allow the students to have these seats before sending them up into the wing, and sell wing seats to the visitors if there seats are sold out. 2. Turnovers - we beat ourselves in the first half by allowing turnovers. 3. Timeouts - why did we call a timeout on the second play of the game? Now for the Ugly. 1. The 12th man died. As UH came out a drove down the field for a touch down in the 3rd. The 12th man died. The crowd became less and less interested in creating crowd noise. Near the end of the third it got so quiet I heard my cellphone ring. If we want to have a true home field advantage we need to make some noise. Now I cant call out the mean green nation with out calling out myself as I even stopped cheering mid 3rd quarter because no one would assist in the noise. 2. We forgot there were 2 half's in a game. As we came out in the 3rd the crowd noise dropped, UNT's performance dropped and UH gained confidence; and looked like a time that is contending for votes in the rankings. 3. It will get worse before it gets better. By this I mean is we now go to Alabama to play the tide. Even though I am optimistic, short of a miracle we will be coming back to Apogee with 0-3 record. My optimistic outlook in the hopeful. 1. FIU may run the table and get into a better bowl then the NO Bowl. Leaving the opportunity for other SB teams to go to other bowls. 2. If UH has the season that some say they will. It will show that we played a respectable first half against them and their Hiseman candidate. 3. Next weeks game may be a trap game for the tide, as they must likely have already marked UNT as a win and are looking forward to an SEC matchup against Arkansas. 4. We can win. The mean green showed us that they can win if they don't beat themselves. We may be able to pull out a bowl game this year if we beat the rest of the SB. 5. That we will continue to have good attendance at Apogee and that the fans continue to come even if we go into the next game at Apogee winless. Well these are my personal opinions. Let me know what you think. What are your Good, Bad, Ugly, and Hopeful scenarios.

  5. I could get NO cell service inside the stadium. That's my only complaint.

  6. I am so proud to ne a unt alum as well as having the chance to contribute as a student athlete. The attendance looks awesome! Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine that we could have a crowd that large and look like a true university that supports college football. Thank you to rick v, the athletic dept, alums, and last but not least the students! #19 2000-2004 Go mean green!!!!

  8. Ok....So I am exhausted like all of you who were there. Will write more tomorrow. We had an absolute great time today! Thank you to all of you who dropped by our tailgate. It was a party. Great meeting you all! I am proud of our boys. Number 1...I saw progress and energy in our team. We are getting better as a team....no doubt. Stadium looked great. Fans were great. So many positives in handful of things we can work on as fans/stadium stuff. Even with the loss, I walked away incredibly proud. Talk with you guys soon. GO MEAN GREEN JRock

  9. "Bird Feed" has a nice ring to it. Anyone else interested in trying it out as a new chant at opposing fans? It kind of has a nice background story to it. "Lifelong LSU fan came out and started it at her first NT game." I think we should see if we can get it to catch on.

  10. I think Mac is playing the younger guys as he sees it as a way to build experience for the next few years. Next year we will have experienced O-lineman coming back. We will have multiple qbs with experience. This will pay dividends down the line. It's gonna take time for Mac to build this team but he is laying the foundation by playing his guys early to get them them the game reps they need now. Listen, these freshman could be redshifted and grow and mature through a year of practice but there is no substitute for game experience. Period. It may be painful in the short term but it will be worth it.

  11. How about you put it on the legions of douche that never left the hill after tailgating. Quit bitching about the Alumni. Remember most of them haven't seen winning football in years, if they even followed the program at all. The only alums in this board are the ones who are die hards and have been with the program through thick and thin. It solves NOTHING to chastize us. It will take time to get the alums who are just coming on board now to understand how we roll, and even longer to get alums who haven't set foot inside an NT athletic facility in years, to start coming again and get them to buy into how we are supposed to act at games.

  12. Agree with you about the young guys on the O line....think we have lots of potential with those guys. As to #93.....that was Brandon McCoy (we have two #93s on our roster).

  13. Yes, I totally agree. He is one of those players you just get excited when he gets the ball. Reminds me of the feeling I had every time I watched the Cowboys and Deion Sanders was back there getting ready to return a punt for a TD!!! A very exciting player for sure. The other thing I like about Chancellor is the fact that he isn't a show off. He gets the job done and usually hands the ball to the ref. Classy. Like my dad used to say, "Act like you've been there before and it's nothing new for ya."

  14. I had an amazing time. Tailgated under a tree which was very relaxing. Next time I might aim for the Hill just for the different experience. Traffic was very well put together, especially them shutting down the right hand lane southbound on 35E so you could easily (safely) get on. I'm not gonna lie, when the Mean Green took the field, I had to wipe my eyes. Such an amazing experience. Apogee Stadium is an incredible venue, and everything about it is first class. Just fix that net in front of the video board. As for the game itself, I was very impressed. We stood toe to toe with UH in the first half. The second half, we were just outplayed by a bigger, stronger, faster team. We'll get there in the next couple years. Can't wait for the next game. Oh, and I'm so glad the first touchdown scored in Apogee Stadium was by the Mean Green.

  17. whhile we were at the Alumni Center before thee game, we heard "Pat Boone" rehearsing. When he "sang" the National Anthem, it was the same recording. Did you notice the band was standing, holding their instruments. I'm assuming he recorded it with the Green Brigade earlier, or maybe it was patched into a GB recording, but it wasn't sung live last night. Many stadiums do this to avoid the 1 or 2 or 3 second delay confusing the persormer, to prevent any risk of forgetting the words, or to prrevent some nut from making a statement with our national Anthem. I think it's actually a good idea for the above reasons. You still hear who you are hearing, just not live. I'm going to the Pat Boone concert this afternoon. I hope there is a large croud there. I hope there's a large croud with anything NT does. GO MEAN GREEN

  18. For some debating if crowd noise has anything to do with the performance on the field....how about something from someone actually ON the field: "We came out on fire," Thompson said. "The fans were in it. That was more than what I expected. They did a great job of keeping us in the game. They caused a lot of problems for Houston's offense. I couldn't stand next to a teammate and hear what he was saying." espn dallas

  19. The Hill looked awesome from I35. It had a lot of people but had room to hold a lot more. We should let the Students move their tailgate location there and fill every corner of it. I was really impressed with how easy it was to get to my parking spot 3 hours before kickoff. I was thinking by how the map looked that it was going to be a disaster. Not at all, and got out of the stadium easily too. There are so many great places to tailgate it's just unreal. I'm looking forward to a game in which I can get there in time and set up to do some of it. Yesterday we spent our time walking around and taking it all in. Great experience all the way. Rick

  21. That has to do with marching and drill. If you wear white socks and shoes, then it's really easy to tell when people are out of step or slightly out of alignment (if you're way out, nothing can save you). A lot of bands wear black to make it a little less obvious. Once they wear their full uniforms, you won't notice the socks at all. I thought the band did a fantastic job on their halftime performance last night. They weren't as loud in the stands as I expected them to be (we were sitting nearly across from them), but I think that might be attributed to overall crowd noise. I had a former Clemson alum and band member with us, and he was absolutely blown away by their sound. He bought a NT hat and shirt last night, and his 7th grade son said it was the "best Saturday of his life". They're now talking about getting tickets for more games this year.

  22. I totally agree. I didn't get any freebies either! Plus I sat at my house all morning waiting for someone from the athletic dept to come to my house and drive me to the game...and when I got there...no one would personally read my parking pass (Which I had to pay EXTRA for!) or tickets to me. I may not be back. How DARE the athletic dept ask anyone to charge for anything. We need more free stuff and more hand holding if we are ever going to be big time.

  25. Fouts was great! I got there at 7:30 and we parked the double decker school bus on the south end of the old stadium along the grass. The parking company and UNT police quickly ordered us to move it between the blue concrete blocks near the center of the lot. Of course us and others politely complained and requested to stay put. The parking company's head guy was very aggressive regarding the RV issue and the UNT police ended up contacting the athletic director's office. Bryan came out who was SUPER nice and allowed us to stay. The RV area between the blue parking blocks filled up fast. I figure UNT will have to revisit their rules as far as RVs. The UNT police and the parking company clearly were not on the same page. UNT police was very nice and the parking company workers were nice. The workers were even complaining about the head parking company guy. Our group was very polite and thanked Bryan profusely. The lot then quickly filled up throughout the day and it was a huge party. Many of the NT fans around us paid us a visit, shared food/drink and we had a great time. At one point, this U of H lady walked over and asked us to turn our music down. We all looked at her with a blank face and she walked away. Party continued. PS: My wife (die hard LSU fan) was decked in green, started playfully yelling "Bird Feed!" to all of the UH fans from top of the bus as they past by, tossing them green beads. It was pretty funny. Good college football razzing. FYI, LSU fans yell "Tiger Bait" at the opposing fans. She may have something going with this one. It was a friendly way of taunting the visiting fans. JRock

  26. Our defensive line is bad. You don't beat a good QB with a bad d-line. Fortunately, he's the best QB we play all year, and after next week, every game is winnable. Yes, even Troy. We have a lot of work to do, but I was happy that we played with them for a half. That's your C-USA champs. Good luck the rest of the way Houston. All I ask is that you beat the hell out of SMU. Go Mean Green.

  27. The ignorance of our fanbase never ceases to amaze me. They will always look for something to complain about. I suppose you preferred Fouts to Apogee?

  28. Ask FIU. They've got an ultra-competitive team in and out of conference this season, and they didn't pack nearly as many fans as we did for the UH game. It's more than just wins, it's also PR. If you ask me, the attendance was good considering the team's previous record.

  29. It was LOUD in the ENTIRE alumni section for the ENTIRE first half. I lost my voice by mid third, and I'm OLD. You can't expect folks to continually be loud when the team couldn't hold on 3rd downs and gave up several HUGE plays quick. It really took the wind out of our old sails but we'll bring it back for the next game. I had a blast and brought 5 people with me. Can't wait to do it again. GO MEAN GREEN!

  30. Ok, I am on the alumni side, as I am an old now... I was a little intoxocated when I made this entry during the game(while we were on offense btw). I wanted to say, first off, that this was 1,000,000 times better than I ever heard fouts. It was a great experience. HOWEVER, if we want a true home field advantage, it really is simple. When the visiting team is on offensive, we yell, whistle, and make noise in general. When our offense is on on the field, we should react to positive plays, but otherwise, a low level of noise is ok. Kickoffs, make noise. When we are receiving, a brelan chancellor chant would probably be appropriate...(my buddies all but laughed at me when I suggested this) I just hope we have fans show up more than once to figure this out. I found myself trying to make up for most around me not yelling... I was doing the cheerleading thing too.... I got the feeling I was annoying people... 5 people yelling at lower levels is louder than 1 guy overyelling. Go mean green

  31. There were actually a few times where I noticed more noise when the Mean Green OFFENSE were facing 3rd down.

  32. You do realize we are something like 6-48 over the past few yrs right? The crowd tonight is quite a feat in my book. It will only get better, and we will learn to demand more. I don't know of many programs that would have put up that attendance mark if they had our record over the past few yrs.

  33. Years of futility + a non-competitive ass whipping by FIU in week 1 + a strong opponent coming off a win over a name program = this. Still, it felt a heck of a lot bigger than some of those Fouts crowds. I know the capacity is about the same, but Fouts felt so much more cavernous. I wish we could have opened against a cupcake (or even a conference foe), but it was still an awesome time - head stomping aside.

  34. We really need some t-shirt alumni. If it wasn't for the great student turnout the wing zone would have been REALLY empty.

  35. We were LIVE in the student section. Alumni need to step it up on the noise level.

  36. I was on the 50 row 8 section 105 and was asked no less than 15 times to sit down. All requests were ignored. Some more drunkenly than others. It was pathetic after the first quarter.

  37. We got almost no pressure on Keenum which forced our secondary to cover for way too long. When you cannot pressure a quarterback, receivers usually find a way to get open. The only times I recall the Mean Green got pressure was by blitzing. Like our offensive line, the defensive line will likely be a top priority in the next couple of recruiting classes.

  38. I could not agree with you more. The students were awesome today. But, it seemed like only about 1/4 of the alumni side even bothered to make some noise on the key 3rd downs. In my 20+ years as a UNT fan, this may have been the first time I have every really witnessed us having a home field advantage due to crowd noise. Apogee could really be a weapon for us, if more people would realize that making noise can really have an impact. As it was, the crowd noise today caused Keenam and the Houston offense problems on several occassions resulting in penalties and/or timeouts. The lower bowl on the alumni side was loud and active. But, it seemed like the further up you got, the more reserved the fans were. I am not really being critical of the fans. People showed up and we need everyone we can get. I just wish that more people realize that the fans can really be a home field advantage, if they would just open up their vocal chords, especially 3rd down defensive stands.

  39. Here are my thoughts on the game. U of H is great team and I was excited that we were competitive with them for the first half. Keenum made some great throws, and is going to be playing on Sundays one day.I am disappointed that we collapsed in the second half, but I am excited about the future of this team. Tailgaiting was great as was the alumni pavilion. The stadium is amazing, also the concession stands are too. We had vendors from Rudys, Sonic, Dippin Dots, Beth Marie's, and there was a concession stand that sold fair food. I had a great day at the stadium, and it is such a different atmosphere then Fouts. On another note, I listened to Coach McCarney's press conference after the game and he first thanked all of the fans. He said that he got a little choked up when he saw all of the fans in the stadium. GO Mean Green!

  43. I think the big problem tonight- 1) We threw everything we had at the first half and it showed. 2) We just didn't have the horses to keep up with a more talented and experienced Houston team. There's a reason they're probably going to end up well into the top 20 this year. I saw a lot of improvement today. I think there's a lot to look forward to throughout the season. I just hope that it wasn't the first game phenomenan and we have empty seats throughout the rest of the year. I saw some bad tackling, some stupid mistakes, blown coverage, but admittedly our defense leaves much to be desired. We can go ahead and take what we can from next week, but I feel pretty good going into the Indiana game. I think we're setting up nicely for conference play, and if we can maintain this kind of a home crowd, it'll be a pretty huge improvement from last year.

  44. I'll be critical. The alumni side is a joke. Maybe we can spend less time tailgating all day and save ourselves for the game. I saw a ton of people from this board no less sitting most of the first half How did section 105 win anything "crazy" from Outback Apathetic Stadium rather than Apogee If you can not stand for this game at least the first half then I dont know what will get you motivated

  45. Houston's 3rd down percentage had to be like 75% We flat out sucked on 3rd down.

  46. You were not. I'll agree the line did them no favors but when you've run step for step with a wr 30 yards down the field there just has to be something in you telling you to look back for the ball. It's happened over and over and over for the past 4 years.
