You are the one to deserve "big ups!" You had every reason not to join the Mean Green Club by living over 1200 miles from Denton. However, you had a vision with the new stadium and the hiring of Coach Mac that this program was ready to take off. Thanks for joining the MGC and buying season tickets! I look forward to seeing you in Miami for the start of the Mac Era!3 points

I would see a game with UT vs ND generating much more buzz than vs A&M. ND is a national team, A&M is not even close to that level. For me personally, I never watched an A&M game until i started dating my fiancee, who is in a family of A&M grads. I also may be biased because I grew up a ND fan and if it weren't for UNT they would still be my favorite team. My best friend actually offered to take me to the ND-Michigan game this season for a bachelor type party thing, but I had to refuse as it is the same day as our first game in the new stadium. He thought I was crazy and stupid...3 points

Our basketball program is decent but we'll only get respected even more when we play close and beat the upper upper echelon teams. On top of that we practically have to win our conference every year and by a very wide margin. Only then will be able to reach that 'next level' in CBB. Beating the likes of Tech and LSU is great and all but they're not that great other than they have a brand. People laughing at North Texas is no surprise and its probably even warranted. We're on our way up but we have a looooonnnggg way to go to reach a respected status locally, regionally and eventually on the national level. Not sure what the point of the thread is but cheers nonetheless.3 points

While I dislike smu as much as the next NT alumn, I don't get why we make fun of them for trying to get into a "better" conference. Aren't we wanting the same thing? And it's only now that our athletic department and school officials have decided to make athletics a priority. I only hope it's not too late for us. I can't fault them For trying. I only wish we would. With that said I think the sun belt is a good spot for us right now, despite it's reputation. But if we by the grace of God get an offer from any other conference I sure hope we take a serious look at it.2 points

A&M has built their whole identity around their rivalry with Texas. Do you know the words of their fight song ("Aggie War Hymn")? Good bye to texas university So long to the orange and the white Good luck to dear old Texas Aggies They are the boys who show the real old fight "the eyes of Texas are upon you" That is the song they sing so well So good bye to texas university We're gonna beat you all to… Chigaroogarem, Chigaroogarem Rough, Tough, Real stuff, Texas A&M Saw varsity's horns off Saw varsity's horns off Saw varsity's horns off Short! A! Varsity's horns are sawed off Varsity's horns are sawed off Varsity's horns are sawed off Short! A! That song's going to sound pretty dumb when they no longer even play Texas ("t.u."). What are the Aggies going to get riled up about anymore if they can't get riled up against "t.u."? You have made it clear from past posts that you don't think (or want to think) from a Texan perspective, and that you are surrounded in your neighborhood and workplace by transplants from other states. I know the UT-A&M rivalry is not what it was just in the 90's, mainly because UT has been light years better than A&M. But generally it's been the case that the whole state buzzes more around that game than any other game UT plays except the OU game, and no other game A&M plays is even close. That might have been a good move at one time, but if they can't compete in the strongest football conference in the country, is it really a good move? Do they want to be thought of in the same class as Vanderbilt (not academically speaking) and Kentucky (not basketball-y speaking)? OU and Texas are going to be fine wherever they are. They have large enough followings that will continue regardless of who else is in their conference. If the Big 12 crumbles, either one could survive as an independent, and they would no doubt have options from other of the "Big 6" conferences.2 points

SMU has had a winning season and a .500 season the past two years. Their attendance last year not counting the TCU game was 18,500. That was coming off their first winning season since the 80s and a blowout win over a top 25 team. I don't even find them as credible a replacement in the Big 12 as Tulsa. We have our own attendance issues, but I don't see how anyone can look at SMU and feel like they haven't peaked. With schools like UH and UNT, there's much more potential to bring back alums and others with ties to the school. None of the three are really great candidates at the moment. If the Big 12 decides to take on a project school or two, I think it'll be UH, UNT, Colorado State, etc long before it's SMU. You don't lose a school with a 46,000 enrollment and replace it with 12,000. Truth be told, I'm not even sure why SMU fans would want to be in the Big 12. Their admissions standards would mean the only teams they'd regularly compete with would be Baylor and Iowa State.2 points

My topic Title came off UNT Flyer's tag line quote from Coach Mac. "People will stop laughing at North Texas, and one day start respecting North Texas." -Dan McCarney Coach...People don't laugh about UNT's Men's Basket Ball team. They already respect us, won't play us, or know if they do we'll give them on heck of a good basketball game. Go Mean Green...JJ, staff, and team!!!1 point

A couple of memorable stories. Loyal Dog Mourns Fallen Navy Seal (Video) http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/man-best-friend-mourns-death-175219915.html AND ANOTHER FROM MY AREA (SOUTH TEXAS) Local Marine killed by sniper and his war buddy Pfc. Colton Rusk always talked about his loyal bomb-sniffing black lab, Eli, when he called home When Pfc. Colton Rusk was shot by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan last December, his loyal explosives-sniffing dog, Eli, rushed to his side and crawled on top of him to protect him, according to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. Eli even snapped at other Marines who rushed over to help Rusk. Tragically, Rusk, 20, didn’t make it. Eli could have been sent off to a new handler. After all, he’s only 4 years old, was uninjured, and has thousands of dollars worth of training invested in him. The day Rusk died, Eli had already sniffed out two explosives. But a plea from Rusk’s family in Texas changed Eli’s future. The commander of Rusk’s unit knew of Rusk’s very special bond with Eli. Sniffer dogs are supposed to sleep in kennels. But Rusk often broke the rules and let him sleep with him on his cot, according to the Huffington Post. Sometimes the dog took up the entire sleeping bag, but Rusk didn’t mind.. Rusk had grown up with dogs on his family’s 100-acre ranch in South Texas, and Eli was almost like a second skin to him. Rusk ate ready-to-eat meals, therefore so did Eli. Based on their strong bond, and the family’s pleas (on their own and through influential politicians), the commander of Rusk’s unit recommended Eli for retirement and adoption by Rusk’s parents and brothers. It’s only the second adoption to the family of a military dog handler killed in combat, reports the Caller Brady Rusk, 12, clung to his brother's best friend when they met at Lackland Air Force Base on Thursday. A&M is going to the SEC and they'll be okay. UT may stay in a reconfigured Big12, create a new super conference, join the PAC12, or go independent - regardless, they'll be fine. The loser in all this is college sports in the state of Texas. I like the Aggies and would rather watch them play Texas than LSU. I like the Horns and would rather watch them play A&M than Iowa State. Sad. Sadder still, this probably leaves the Mean Green in that Hell Hole calted the Belt. God bless Texas.1 point

Naturally we will jest concerning SMU but at least they are asking around albeit I don't think their Big 12 chances would be that promising. We can only hope our own leaders are continually putting out feelers for other upward bound leagues because the rule of thumb in the NCAA seems to have always been if you're standing still with your athletic program, then you are actually losing ground. If our new most impressive football palace is the end-all and climatic apex of our program, then (athletically) we will sleep another 25 years in Denton and compete in the lower quadrant of our division. Check out our last 25 years for a little history of how quickly it can fly by and how many Top 25-50 schools we beat in that span of time as compared to other schools at or near our level who did pull off some major upsets. Coach Mac given time most of us feel will take us to the next level. I just hope our UNT leadership have the ability and the right contacts to do the same. Just sayin...1 point

Funny guy...I could care less what the clinical definition of preventive care is...I care about what helps people maintain a healthy life. Going to a doctor for a check-up and finding out you are fat and need to lose weight because you are now susceptible to type II diabetes is not keeping you healthy in any way shape or form...maintaining a healthy life style may well have PREVENTED that condition in the first place and REDUCED the guys cost of health care in the first place...and the taxpayers under your idea of "civilized nation" status...so again...if you don't think maintaining a healthy life style is preventive care, you are kidding yourself. NO, your employer doesn't. You are not required to take out that insurance and are free to find you own or go without. It's a choice...you have NO choice in the government sponsored program...what is so hard to figure out about that? The Naval comparison is legit and points to what happens when care is seen to be "free". I have definitely made a choice on my insurance. I chose NOT to take the coverage provided by my employer and chose to find it elsewhere...which I did. See, I had a choice and I availed myself of that choice...you could too, you just choose not to do so...that's what choice is all about. It doesn't mean it costs less, but it also doesn't mean that you have no choice. You in fact have made a choice which those folks in your "civilized nations" don't have the right to make. So, Cuba is not a civilized nation? Is Iran? China? North Korea? They have national health care systems as well. I thought to be a "civilized nation" you had to provide national health care coverage? Really, I'm just having a little fun with you there.... So costs are skyrocketing...so, let's make it better and see costs go even higher with choices limited through a national health care plan? Not my idea of a good choice. Again, nanny state vs personal choice and personal responsibility. You decide. I've made my decision. Now we can all see where it goes and learn to live with it either way.1 point

Wow. 118 yards long. A windmill powered moving sidewalk would be a nice addition. As would built-in HDTV's, climate control, and a park situation at both ends with live music and such on game days. We could sell advertising to pay for it all.1 point

Well, that's extremely interesting as a lot of preventive care doesn't cost anything like not smoking (in fact that would save one money), not sitting around the house and watching hour after hour of TV or playing hour after hour of video games and actually getting some exercise instead, watching the sugar and fat intake in the foods eaten (and yes...low income families CAN eat healthy...choices, choices...personal responsibility), staying away from excessive alcohol consumption, staying off drugs, making sure you get to the numerous public clinics for the proper vaccinations (more often than not free or at a very small fee), using even the most modest of dental hygiene (like a toothbrush and toothpaste-wow, that's expensive), and on and on and on. I am not saying that all preventive care is free or at reduced costs, but all too often people are ill because they don't take care of the simplest and least costly items. You can ask any physician about this should you not believe me. Tell me where the costs have gone down after a nation institutes universal health care coverage for its citizens? Please name one of those "civilized nations" you refer to where the cost of the nation's health care has declined over the last 20 years! Just because preventive care is available does not mean people will avail themselves of the service. You are dreaming if you think that just adding "free" services will change behavior. Also, you seem to assume that care would be better once universal health care is initiated, really? Better for whom? Interesting comment of yours "insurance companies are out to make money, they don't care about people, especially in the US where everything is a money grab". Especially the "everything's a money grab" part. I get it, some people believe that big government can do everything better than if people were allowed to make their own choices and take some personality for how their lives turn out. That is evident in all the socialist and communist nations around the globe. It is also evident in some of the thinking of some folks in Washington DC these days. So, that form of thinking is not rare, and I get it. I just happen to believe that it is "stinking thinking".1 point

Interesting spin. I'm not sure what any of this has to do with Rick Perry running for President, but I'll bite. While it is mainly government driving the spending during a time of war, wartime spending by the government (particularly during the period of history we're talking about here) was VASTLY different than Stimulus & Project spending as seen in the New Deal and 2009 Stimulus Act. First, during WWII, virtually all US manufacturing and agricultural processes were diverted from producing product for the private sector and put towards the war effort. General Motors built Airplanes. Ford built Tanks. We had VERY unlimited supplies of agricultural goods and they were rationed - meaning that every bit that could be produced was being consumed in the effort. HUGE demands on factories that were not historically able to run at the productivity required meant that manufacturing innovation had to take place. Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering technologies took quantum leaps forward during wartime to keep up. Since most able-bodied men were overseas fighting, women joined the workforce on mass for the first time and began to earn extra dollars to spend in their households. Waste wasn't an option as every resource (capital, fossil fuels, raw materials, food) was needed to support the war effort. Government funds were spent VERY efficiently during this time. If a job took 3 guys, 2 were assigned and were expected to make it happen... ...and usually they did. There wasn't any of this $200 for a toilet seat (sarcasm, to be sure, but always the go-to example of government waste) crap in 1942. Folks who lived through this time and contributed sell themselves short by giving the credit to FDR, a President who time has shown to be pretty weak on economics. He was a good wartime President, but he wasn't making much progress on the economic crisis of the time until Japan hit us in Pearl Harbor and we went all in. How we manufacture changed. How we worked changed. Who was working change. most of the models of efficiency business (particularly manufacturing) follow were created at that time. It wasn't some temporary road construction jobs or building a dam, it was something with far more impact than those types of temporary projects (and thus jobs) could ever hope to have corrected. The real proof in the pudding came in 2009, when we tried it again with the same results. Only this time - there is no WWII to give bad policy cover.1 point

----The real purpose was not to improve gasoline use... It was to help keep the auto companies including dealerships etc. in business and provide jobs for Americans... A side benefit--- when people are working and paying taxes.... they are not receiving un-employment benefits. One company has also been able to return a lot of the bail out money as a result. ---Opponents of people and ideas tend to over simplify everything.1 point
