There's a big storm coming to Miami on September 1st, and it's big, mean, and very green!11 points

I don't think Vito is right on the money, but he is right in line with most outside prognosticators. I certainly don't agree with his oft cited Andrew Smith and Beverly rationale for NT's decline. NT lacked much more than a good QB to be even an average team. The 'Great Dickey' lived on one recruiting class and after that his lackluster and almost non-existent recruiting sunk the team. It apparently never occurred to DD that openly and frequently badmouthing NT might have some dire effects on recruiting. As far as the season's record, the new coaching staff was not paid to duplicate Dodge like results. The long rebuilding cycle that Vito and others think is necessary, is certainly not a given. The Belt is far from the SEC and the talent gap is not that great, see last years conference results with an awful injury and coaching situation.5 points

Ok, so here's the plan for the 24 hour tailgate. I'll be setting up camp at 6pm Friday the 9th. Not knowing just how many people will be there it'll be Chicken Express family meal time. A little "corn hole" playing, a little (lot) drinking, and maybe some playstation that night. Saturday it's scrambled eggs, bacon and tortillas on the grill. Read the DMN and DRC sports pages for a bit then start making phone calls to find out where the hell everyone is!!! It's game day folks! After a few (5) beers, it's on to the real drinking. Mean Green Punch!!! (For those that know it by its proper name...you know what time it is) Once my crew is all accounted for it's time to fire up the grill again. A few racks of ribs, some shrimp kabobs and time to throw the pill around ON ACTUAL GRASS. By now the wife should be arriving along with my mom so I'll have to tone down the party...just a bit. Full and still half buzzed it'll be time to walk into Apogee for the first game ever. After shedding a few tears of joy and saying a short "thank you" prayer I'll watch my Mean Green tan the hides of a few Cougars. Best. Weekend. Ever.4 points

HA! Sadly, he will not be attending the FIU game and I haven't heard from him in a while... I wonder if he knows that Mean Green Scrappy (who will be in Miami) is doing his best to take his place...4 points

Nope...many economists believe that FDR's programs were responsible for actually prolonging the Depression. It took WWII to bring the US (and the rest of the world) out of the depression. There have been several good articles and books written on this subject. You will always get a "yes-no" argument on this, but the more time passes the more objective people get on FDR (my Mom still thinks he was God's gift to the US and she's now 86) and his policies.4 points

I read it on the "Adrian Awasome Is Now A Viking" board which Harry added a while back.3 points

have there been any details released about the watching party at the new stadium? can we sit on the field? bring our own food and drink? any info appreciated...thanks.2 points

The 2.5 minute Video shows players from different FIU sports around their campus. The last 30 seconds or so their QB is in the stadium throwing the football from different locations. It gives you an idea of the stadium and feel for the place. http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=5093432 points

Pretty sad that as I was reading through the FAQ and came to "Where is RV parking?" my first brief thought was why does everyone need to know where Rick Villareal is parking. Sad, but true.2 points

This game is all about Case Keenum, impo. If he's anywhere near as effective as he was before he was injured, we are in big trouble. That, and the blitzing style that DC Clint Bowen wants to play will play right into UH's hands if Keenum's as quick to get the ball out as he has been in the past. As far as getting our running game going goes, I can't tell if all the Andrew Power talk leaking out is legit, or just a smoke screen....but it makes sense that we'd try to utilize a pass catching TE this season, of all seasons. We're down to very little in terms of experienced receivers, our o-line is a question mark, and our QB is coming off a season ending leg break and should be much less mobile than what we're used to seeing. I bet we're going to see Prior and Power on the field a lot together---both to open holes for Dunbar, and to try to soften up the middle of the defense with short passes to Power. When you look at our personnel, it just makes sense.2 points

I'm burned out on these Hurricane names. You'd think the weather service would name Hurricane's with better ones - like maybe something Biblical or out of a great horror movie. Irene and Rita don't sound impressive at all. Neither does Ike. Where do they get these names? Irene and Rita sound like two Bingo gals down at the VHA hospital...2 points

Enjoy. I wish I had enough to give each of you. I am thinking about brewing a batch for every home game with customized labels if there is enough interest. JRock2 points

Stranger things have happened in college football. I like to think positive. I believe we can make it close and will even go as far to say we win by 3 points. JRock2 points

I guess it would be nice for the rest of the readers of The Dallas Morning News to be exposed to a Mean Green article. But for the rest of us, it would likely be a Brett Vito/D-RC rerun showing up in the DMN. After all, Vito is essentially the DMN beat writer for North Texas sports. What is really too bad is that we don't get much in the way of coverage in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. It would really be nice - REALLY BE NICE - to get a perspective different from Vito's from at least one metroplex daily publication. GMG2 points

Just finished a 10g batch this morning. Should be ready for mid-season. Got another 20g that's been lagering through the summer in anticipation on the opener and beyond. I keg which helps since I am graphically challenged. I do have a means of tailgating with it though. About to paint it green it holds a 3 gallon keg or about 24 pints Tailgate Keg2 points

Really? I'm not sure about that. John Adams has had a recent revival of his image, but he's never at the very top of any lists. Madison isn't either - and generally gets a lot of criticism for helping instigate the War of 1812. Monroe, despite governing over the Era of Good feelings is generally just rated in the top 3rd. That's not to say any of them were bad presidents, generally speaking they're mostly all considered successful to some degree (even Adams). But usually Lincoln is thought of to be either be ahead of, or slightly behind Washington as our best. And he has his detractors as well. Really, all of of our presidents do - save maybe Harrison, and that's only because he died a month into his term.2 points

Does anyone on the board know a former player by the name of David Lott? I had the pleasure of meeting him this weekend and I am trying to help him get some information about some activities happening on the opening weekend of the season. If you played with him, could you please contact me? Thanks!1 point

From Wikipedia: James Madison, Jr. (March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836) was an American statesman and political theorist. He was the fourth President of the United States (1809–1817) and is hailed as the “Father of the Constitution” for being the primary author of the United States Constitution and the author of the United States Bill of Rights. __________________ ---I would say that puts him in a pretty good position in the rankings... unless you don't think much of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. I wouldn't call any of these guys Conservative ... they supported change ... the Tories (conservatives) didn't. The founding fathers also supported the separation fo church and state... didn't think religion should control government or governmnet should control religion..... because of what they had seen in Europe and all the wars as the result of religious beliefs. Above video seems to show the opposite of those beliefs. That doesn't mean people shouldn't be religious though.... just not try to control each other.1 point

LOL. I have three kids. Two boys (2 1/2 years and 18 months) and a daughter who is 6...and a very busy career to boot. It can be done. J1 point

Sure thing. http://www.homebrewhq.com/ is what we use. You can get the necessary equipment for about $60 plus whatever recipe items you choose. Of course there is a lot of fancier equipment you can purchase but not a necessity. JRock1 point

Awesome. I'd really like to get into this. Do you favor a website or store that provides the necessary "kit"1 point

Jealous. I gave up home brew when kids entered the picture. Not a morality issue more of a time constraint. Typical home brews take about a month start to finish. I have a friend who works for BrewingTV. I'm proud to say I showed him the ropes, but he quickly out paced me.1 point

It depends really how long it takes to brew. Some can be ready in as little as a few weeks.1 point
-
Thank you. It all depends on what type you brew. For this type of Oktoberfest, it takes about 5-15 days to ferment. Then you prime it with sugar in the bottle, which allows the remaining yeast to carbonate the brew. This takes about another 10 days or so. Lagers are normally aged months etc. It's more of an art form than cooking. My buddy is much better at the details than I am. I give him all of the credit for this. I simply wanted to honor our team. We only made 44 bottles. JRock1 point

Awesome job. I thought it took a few months to brew homeade beer though? Are you using a store bought set up or something else?1 point

Don't send any to the players. There might be a few NCAA violations involved with that.1 point

I just spoke with someone at the ticket office and was told that football season tickets will be sent out sometime next week or the week after. MG Club members parking passes were something they had no idea about as they are coming from a different printing company. Huh? Did I get my math wrong, or are there just 3 weeks to go before first home game... Is this last minute stuff and disorganization (just see the posts about no tailgating info) a sign of things to come from UNT? I hope not.1 point

With all those late arriving students seeing that they have to sit in the end zone- maybe they will get there earlier next time. Ahhhhhhhhhh! Could be a great thing for the Ex's side looking at their side full too. GMG1 point

North Texas' Boomer The Cannon comes in at #8. http://www.texasmonthly.com/preview/2011-09-01/feature "Boomer the Cannon It is believed to be the only seven-eights scale smooth-bore muzzle-loaded cannon used at a college football game in the country. Yeah, we don't know exactly what that means either, but we do know one thing from experience: Boomer is loud. Alas, the deafening blasts rang a little hollow last season, which UNT finished without any home wins. But with a new head coach and stadium, perhaps this year it'll discharge some joyous booms"---BDS Has a nice little photo in there as well. Rick1 point

I think this thread has gone on in a wrong direction. We're not talking about bringing Leach here to Denton. We're talking about bringing him to the Belt. Look at the Big XII: were any of the other institutions really concerned about his persona? Their only concern was what happened when they played TTech. His teams wore them out, sometimes showed defense, and sometimes humiliated them on (additonal) national TV. Bringing him to the Belt would only do the same: elevate our level of play and exposure of the game to a bigger audience. Let the specific institution and their local media take his ego while we simply watch. If you want to complain that it would tarnish the Belt's reputation, then you are not being consistent. Why? Because we can only look within our current crop of coaches to find blemishes. Do that, and tell me again why you have a problem with one coach being a jerk and yet his institution is run clean and firing on all cylinders. 2008: He beat #1 Texas and tied for the Big XII South title, but didn't get a shot at the conference title game because of conference tie-breaking rules. Thus, excluded from consideration for BCS title game. IIRC, until OU beat them they were up there with PSU in the top 3 of the BCS poll. If you want to live and die by the all-or-nothing argument, then your point is lost. We aren't talking about the same thing anymore. It's like the rest of us are talking about how great the steak would be at Bob's Steak & Chophouse, while you keep insisting we're idiots because you think the carrot is gross. The guy spent the last couple years at TTech taking Ws from OU or Texas while they were top-5 material. A couple more years and who knows? He may have a big ego, but I didn't think he was a jerk. At what point, Kram did he become a jerk to you?1 point

I don't get the hype. I think it's kind of sweet and forward-thinking that SMU decided to add a Curves for their players. After all, my mom is raving about her circuit training class.1 point

I think its very nice. The club like lighting may just be for photo purposes. Had our locker rooms been green or something ilke that we'd love it. Can we please stop all this SMU bashing nonsense and worry about our own damn selves?1 point

No, we didn't have a chance to win down two scores with about a minute left. It was a meaningless game and statistically the odds were stacked agains us to actually make such a comeback anyway. The only reason I don't care about the Thompson thing anymore is because he publicly said it was something he wanted to do. So that was enough for me. However, the argument that you stated doesn't fly for me.1 point
