  4. Apogee Acquires Naming Rights To North Texas' New Stadium By Terry Lefton, Editor-at-Large Published August 11, 2011 The Univ. of North Texas will announce tomorrow that campus networking firm Apogee is the naming-rights partner for the school's new $79M football stadium, in a 20-year deal that averages around $1M a year. Austin-based Apogee has been a supplier to UNT since '08... CLICK Here for the rest of the article This post has been promoted to an article

  6. Wait -- people are really debating the benefits or partnering with a company specializing in campus networks with a focus exclusively on universities? I know in some sense $20M is $20M from anyone, but as far as finding a partner willing to work with us and do whatever it takes to maximize this sponsorship's value, I don't think there were many better fits out there. Home run IMO.

MEMO: to all Mountain West Conference member institutions FROM: Apogee networks We regret to inform you that unless you include our newest business partner, the University of North Texas Mean Green into your conference effective for the 2012 season, we will be removing your internets. That is all.

  9. Yes, as a part of the deal, the board operator in the Apogee Mean Green Stadium will have the ability to override any jumbotron at any DIV1A stadium in the country for 60 seconds at a time with a live broadcast of whomever UNT is pummeling. They will call it Apogee live look.

  15. I think what people are forgetting is that no matter what happens, Texas isn't going to be "left out in the cold" If Texas wanted to join the SEC, the SEC would be glad to have them. Same for the PAC whatever. Hate them as you will, but there are few programs in the nation that are a bigger "get" than Texas for ANY conference. I also don't see anyone going it alone. Texas isn't going to resign itself to some second tier conference in all over sports just to go indy in foot all. You can't schedule an independent baseball team, basketball, etc. Alum would never go for it. The Big 12 may die, but all this talk about Texas dying with it are misguided pipe dreams. If anything dies, it will be the LHN.

  18. There's some hitting going on in this one. You have to love the energy of Coach Simmonds and Wintrich! No wonder USF escalated to #2 in the country under Leavitt, McCarney, Canales, Simmonds, and Wintrich on staff. Good gosh what energy!!!! It can happen here too...

  19. One Aggie's Opinion: The concensus among the Aggie faithful is that the Big 12 is no longer a premiere conference. In the NCAA you are either growing or shrinking, and the Big 12 is shrinking. The downfall of the SWC began with Arkansas' departure and likewise, you don't lose a Nebraska and a Colorado in the same year and say that all is well. Clearly, the SEC is the premiere sports league in football. Likewise, the Big 10 has an unbelievable history, academics, and prestige. Larry Scott has brought the Pac10/12 to the forefront with innovation, expansion, and leadership. Beebe is the antithesis of a leader. He is a Longhorn puppet. The whole conference is a front for Texas. And the mass of members don't have clout to pursue other options. Baylor / Iowa State have no room to tell Texas to f off. Oklahoma seems to be hesitatnt to react. But Mizzou, A&M, and Tech have all had words / actions speaking against the LHN. Look, no real conference has unequal revenue sharing. But the Big 12 was set up to be the MLB and the Longhorns signed up to be the Yankees. What's wrong with the Longhorn Network you ask? Well a better question would be why would you have a Longhorn Network instead of a BIg 12 network? I could give you a 1000 reasons why it is a bad idea. But to me it is like when free agency first appeared in baseball. It will now be a mad rush and the richer will only get richer. But just imagine you had to play a national telecast with announcers chosen by your opponent (contractually obliged to be approved by Texas or they are fired)? And imagine that Texas is the one that gets paid for games on that network, not the conference? Now imagine that Texas could broadcast HS games. The counter that "we get all the recruits we want" does not make it right. I loved the argument that "hey I get all my recruits before September anyway. . . " from Mack Brown. Which is why they are planning to televise the state;s top JUNIOR in their first game. Coincidence? The president of the LHN said in an interview that they were indeed intentionally televising Texas recruits and they would go out of state to do so. It is a clear NCAA violation. You can't even put a recruit's name on a bigscreen but now you can pay his high school money, televise his game on your network, and have hand-picked announcers talk about what a great fit said recruit will be for Mack and how great the Longhorn staff is blah blah blah. So that's a long way of saying the Aggies are tired of the Longhorns pushing their weight around (something Michigan does not do in teh Big 10 nor Alabama in the SEC). Thus, we want out. The Big 12 has become a joke and watching Beebe reminds me of Brownie leading the FEMA effort. I could care less if we play Texas again. Like most Aggies, I realize the SEC is a whole level of competition higher, but it is worth it. Besides, road games at Tennessee and Georgi and Florida, etc >>> beat Ames, Manhattan, and Lubbock. Now, would love the NEW SWC if that could happen UNT UH Rice SMU TCU Baylor Southwest Texas Tulsa La Tech or somesuch. Personally, I would love to see that.

  20. Hey...that's great...it's always so awesome to get more loyal North Texas supporters posting on here. I will say, though, this place can be a bit of a land-mine field to navigate sometimes...gosh, I remember when I first started posting I was a bit overwhelmed...I mean, now that I've been posting for a while I'm more comfortable and experienced...maybe if you want to grab a coffee or a drink at some point we could talk about it...you know, make your transition to avid poster a bit smoother?

  21. Plus, we still don't know what the name of the stadium will be. It could be Apogee Stadium, or it could be named after someone. The great news is that we sold naming rights to our stadium in the middle of a down economy. This tells me we are doing things RIGHT!

  29. Cuban-HD Net Stadium has a nice ring to it. Cuban loves football, and $10,000,000 is nothing to the man. Maybe HD Net would broadcast our games not picked up by ESPN. FBS football is more high profile then Cuban's professional league. Cuban could do for North Texas what Ted Turner did for the Braves.

  31. With transfer like him and Feldt, summer commitments from guys with three stars and another with offers from Mike Stoops at Arizona and Larry Fedora at Southern Miss...you get the feeling we are about to see something in Denton we haven't seen since the Fry Era. Seriously, with all the conference shake-up talk, a strong season and these facilities, plus this coaching staff will go a long way. If you've traveled to many OOC games, you can easily see the new stadium is far and above most mid-majors. It makes Tulsa's refurbish job look completely amateur. It's more unique by far than SMU's Ford. I've been to: Jack Trice at Iowa State - New Mean Green is far better. I'm sure McCarney would agree as well. Chapman/Skelly at Tulsa - Not even close Ford at SMU - New Mean Green better Louisiana - Lord, not even close. FIU - Ditto, Louisiana Folsom at Colorado - The atmosphere is bound to be better if it's sold out. Folsom, I believe still has the erector set, aluminum seats in one end zone Wagner at Kansas State - Look, the KSU student section may be the loudest pound-for-pound in the country; but the New Mean Green stadium is better than the rehab job that the actual stadium really is. New Mexico State - New Mean Green is ridiculous better. I didn't go to Ball State...but, can anyone who did go tell me that stadium was better than what we have now? We have something to offer. And, if we start winning now, it can get better in a hurry. A decade ago, USF and UConn weren't even in the picture. Now, they're both BCS AQs. We can make that climb. Having Dan McCarney with longtime ties with ADs and coaches in bigger conferences can't hurt either. However you slice it, these Circle Drill clips are really exciting. I don't see how any non-season ticket holder watches those and doesn't buy in. I bought in last week. It really is time to believe in this thing and buy in. The final piece of the puzzle is winning. The athletic department has pretty much delivered everything we've spent about the last decade bitching about. They've put their money where their mouths were; it's time for us to do the same. If you can't afford a whole season ticket package, get together with another family or two and split one. Look, the end zone seats are 4 for $400 bucks, 6 games. For the view in those seats, that's insanely low. Hell, go in with 6 other people and get a package. That'd be $66.67 per game. Four tickets, four drinks, and a pizza for $66.67. Dude, you cannot beat that. Each of your friend picks a game. I don't care how you do it, but do it. These guys - the players, coaches, and athletic department - are working hard to make this thing go. We can put our butts in the seats to help push it the rest of the way with them! I have a butt, and I'm not afraid to use it!

  32. Has Miami been what the ACC hoped they would be? If I'm a commish, I'm so torn on them: title contenders every now and then, Florida market, but crappy crowds and shady history w/NCAA.

  38. Possibly. But, this time around, it's the Pac-12 that holds the key. Texas left them at the alter last year. I think Texas and ESPN are crazy enough to think they can go solo.

  40. So happy to have new people to bounce basketball ideas and thoughts off of. I like all three of these guys for different reasons. Alonzo - Wanted that championship more than anyone on the team and did his part from the bench while injured and ailing. Hogans - Had some really big offensive performances and got it rolling last year when the team needed him. It seemed that nothing was working offensively for a stretch last year and he proved he could step up and have big nights. Holmen - As said before, he really improved in his selection and basketball IQ last year in the short amount of playing time. I really like his shot, just not from beyond the arc. I'd really like to see him turn those shots into mid-range shots.

  41. My heart is always down in the trenches with the big uglies. My adopted player the past two seasons graduated, so let me reload with Tevinn Cantly !! We are going to play some defense this year and be nasty, and my adopted player can do that!

  42. I would not be surprised if all the three of the returning front-court players being primarily bench strength by the end of the year Hogans is a senior and has demonstrated great heart and tenacity but is also both foul and injury prone. I like him more off the bench to provide instant energy. My view is that he is a good not great defender, there is a lot of difference in being a good shot blocker and being a good defender. He had an unexpected good offensive game before the injuries but never recovered that part of his game, Hogans will get a lot of minutes and will be an important part of the team. Holmen and Edwards both are going to have to greatly enhance their games to see much of the floor this year. Holmen did look much better right before his injury but he has had a few good games before but has always lacked the consistency and a lot of times effort on the court. In my opinion he and Edwards both should concentrate on defense and rebounds and forget the three pointer. NT apparently has a team full of outside shooters. I thought last year that Holmen was probably the best athlete NT had on the team. With Jordan Williams, Jones, and Mitchell that probably won't be the case this year. However he could really be a difference maker if he improved his defense and inside offense. Edwards has played 4 years since high school and everyone is still waiting for that potential to be realized. He is apparently a good team player and has a great desire to excel but I don't see him being much of a factor this year The three returners do all have a chance to play because the one failure of the great recruiting class was to get that gritty inside player. Mitchell may end up in that role but the consensus seems to be he will float a lot to the outside. The Parisian and Robinson also want to shoot the outside shoot but both could be descent inside men. My guess is that NT will play a lot without a true post and depend on team rebounding instead of an Odufuwa type player. Jordan Williams and Franklin could be effective rebounders from the wing. Not sure many know but Jones can probably out jump anyone on the team. It will be an interesting year for sure.

We like to talk about shoes, the latest fashion trends and spirited discussions regarding ACDC, top-40 and their roles in game day atmosphere. We also love our traditions, and like to pick which ones are really traditions vs. ones that need to be changed according to our personal preferences.
