  1. In the past 3 days I've played nearly 100 holes of golf, got to Skype with the cross-country lady-friend, took my roommate out for his birthday and just finished cooking some delicious tilapia tacos. Just got home and took a look at this. This may be the highlight of my weekend.

  2. I'm thinking that we had a head coach who was of the mindset that not allowing skill position players to hit and get hit during two-a-days was the proper way to prepare for a season, may have had the most to do with it? Rick

  3. Since 1966, when the Grahams started calling the defense the "Mean Green", the University, (in particular the athletic department) has used it in various degrees in conjunction with our MASCOT NAME.....EAGLES. When Hayden Fry arrived in 73, he went about changing the culture and/or attitude of our athletic department. Toward that end, he decided that he would de-emphasize all things that might have to do with our losing ways and our losing attitude. SO, he changed the color of the uniforms, emphasized MEAN GREEN instead of Eagles, and got a new Eagle image, which many people called the Flying Worm. And even though he emphasized MEAN GREEN, the words almost always had the stylized Eagle riding on top. After Hayden Fry left, the people in charge moved things back to emphasizing Eagle and went back to darker green with the uni's. Until Rick V. arrived, Eagles and Mean Green were used pretty much in equal parts. Like Hayden Fry, Rick V. liked Mean Green more than Eagles and the emphasis has moved back to MEAN GREEN. HOWEVER, if you'll notice, the Eagle (in the form of the SOW and the presence of Scrappy at athletic events) is still very much the official image of North Texas. I still don't understand why this is such a hard concept for some people to understand.

  4. Our name is the Eagles.....our nickname is the Mean Green. Until Sydney Graham started pestering her husband to include "Mean Green" (meant for the defense) in his press releases, we didn't have a nickname. My dad's name was Robert, but everyone called him Bob....which was his nickname. My name is William, but everyone calls me by my nickname....Bill.....not dude.

  6. I always wonder why people even still care. It's petty. Look, the United States beat the Confederacy the same way it beat the Nazis on the battle field and the Soviets off of it. To me, people who fly the Confederate Flag are simply flying one of the loser flags of history. They're saying, "Hooray, for the losers!" If they want to be losers, let them be losers. Everyone knows the final score. Morons still get Nazi tatooes and buy Nazi and Hammer and Sickle flags. In America, you are free to be stupid - our Supreme Court has interpreted the U.S. Constitution in such a manner. So...buy up Sons of the Confederacy, or whatever your name is. Until such time as stupidity is outlawed, you are well within your right. (By the way, the opinion above puts me at odds with probably every relative in my family, some of whom have made a lifetime out of studying the Civil War. But, someone has to break the cycle of redneck in our family...and, I'm not above doing it.)

  7. Who cares if you fly a Confederate Flag? I love it when I see a Mexican Flag flying...whats the difference.

  8. But isn't that tempered a bit by the fact that the Lone Star Flag had already been the official flag of the Republic of Texas and had been in use for 22+ years when the civil war began? It already had other significance and meaning, and was naturally used in an unofficial capacity by some units of Texans in the Civil War - as it would have been regardless of which side the Texans might have fought on. It was never a uniquely Confederate flag, so it escaped the connotations therein.

  9. Prove what? That revisionism exists? Here is a pretty good definition. re·vi·sion·ism (r-vzh-nzm) n. 1. Advocacy of the revision of an accepted, usually long-standing view, theory, or doctrine, especially a revision of historical events and movements. One example would be the historical view of the battle of Little Big Horn. For decades the accepted version (as pushed by Libbie Custer) was like the Movie "They Died with their Boots on". Then there was the other view (revisionist?) presented in the Movie "Little Big Man".

  10. I know it's technically not perfect history, but when explaining it to those utterly unfamiliar with our situation, I just use the Elephant > Crimson Tide/Oakland A's, Ibis > Hurricanes, War Eagle > Tigers, Tree > Cardinal bit and it usually satisfies the situation.

  13. Jelon Hornbeak 6'4 185 pds SG 2012 High School : Arlington Grace Prep AAU : Texas PRO Rivals # 64 on it's top 150 Rivals # 10 on it's top SGs ESPN evaluation : Hornbeak is a smooth operator on the floor for his age. He's highly skilled with the ball which makes for very efficient play on the offensive end. He has range out to 25' both off the dribble and catch. I think he prefers the ball in his hands, but is more than capable of coming off screens for jump shots. When the ball is in his hands good things happen. He sees the floor with vision and can deliver pinpoint passes. His handle allows him to get inside the defense to score on floaters in the lane and shots at the rim. 16. Right, it was used as a rep for confederate regiments in Texas, and had a good history behind it. I guess my point is, if your from Texas and want to take some kind of pride in being Texan and want to show your southern pride, what's wrong with the Lone Star Flag. Why would anyone in Texas want to fly the Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia...ie "The Rebel Flag"? Rick

  19. I'm aware of that. CONCACAF specifically places the teams in certain groups so as to maximize revenue. They DO NOT do a true "draw" for the tournament. Just because it was in a predominantly Mexican area doesn't make it not upsetting... When the USA played in Washington DC in the quarterfinals, well over half of the crowd was rooting for El Salvador (who played after the USA). The 2009 final in New York was about 80% Mexico fans, and the 2007 Final in Chicago (where US Soccer is headquartered) was probably somewhere around 70/30 with Mexico having more fans. Without a doubt Americans do not support the national team like other countries do, but the fact that there are so many people here that support the teams the US is playing is the part that upsets me.

  20. This reminds me of two years ago in the student section @ Fouts. A new transfer student from Tech kept yelling "Let's go Eagles!". Everyone looked at him with a blank stare. Fun fact: he also was carrying a 6 inch blade in his boot - those techies.

  21. What upsets me infinitely more than the loss is the fact that our team had to play an away game in their own country. That crowd was about 90% for Mexico if not a little more. That is embarrassing and just sad at the same time that that can happen in this country.

  23. An unrecognizable eagle logo? Sure. Like a generic paw print plastered on the side of a helmet, an eagle doesn't exactly clue anyone into which school is being shown. Look, I'm not saying that North Texas script looks better than our SOW. I'm simply pointing out the benefit to having it on our helmets.

  29. My theory on rivalries. 1. Helps for the fan base to travel to the away games. 2. Games have to be played regularly. 3. There has to be a triumph you cherish. 4. There has to be a loss that burns at your heart. Arkansas State and UNT will meet for the 13th consecutive season this year. Louisiana and UNT will be the 12th consecutive meeting. This year marks the 11th consecutive meetings for UNT with ULM and MT, 8th with FAU, 7th with FIU and Troy and 5th with WKU. UNT - ULM will be the 28th meeting in the series. ULM had the benefit of being the last league loss before "the streak" but a loss like that only matters in retrospect because UNT football took on a new life after that game. If you look at the 10 last meetings since the series renewed, only three were close. The schools are 320 miles apart. ASU - UNT this year marks 21st playing of the series. It just really hasn't had any winner take all meetings since renewed regularly. Of the last 12 games since regular renewal of the series, seven have been determined by a TD or less. There were the exchanges of grenade celebrations to add a little spice. One thing that drags the series is that most of the ASU fans who come to Denton are from Little Rock or they are from the DFW region. UNT doesn't have a similar alumni base to tap into. The UNT base faces a 460 mile or so trip to ASU, while the ASU fans coming to Denton, many are driving 330 miles or much less. UL - UNT the entire series has only had 15 games played. Of the 11 games played consecutively, only three were determined by a TD or less. Roughly a 430 mile trip. The decline of UNT football has taken some of the fun out of it all. Since 2005 only 11 wins against teams currently in the Sun Belt. To have a healthy series, UNT has to play good football again (appears to be addressed) and then good UNT football has to coincide with good football at one of those three schools because everyone else is really too far away for the fans to follow the team.

  30. I would rather that students learn how to do things that will actually net them careers, aka sports talk, talk, and music people actually want to hear. Wouldn't it be more experience for a student to be programming a station for 250,000 people instead of 45,000? Wouldn't it be nice to have students and alums listening to a station where you can advertise upcoming games, concerts, and other events and just keep them interested in (or bring them back to) their school in general? I have nothing against jazz, but it's a waste of resources for a university run station to have that as its main format. Not a .7, a .1. 0.7% of all DFW, aka just over 45,000 people. Sometimes it's not even a .1, so then it's just not rated instead of being a '.0'.

  34. Interesting article in today's Wall Street Journal regarding "The NCAA's Last Innocents". It seems there are only 17 FBS schools left that have not been in big trouble with the NCAA over rules violations, etc. UNT is one of the "innocents". The list includes: University of North Texas Boston College Northwestern Penn State Stanford Air Force Boise St. Bowling Green Central Mich. Colo. St. Fla. Atlantic Kent St. Ohio Rice Troy UAB W. Mich Interesting list. These are schools that, TO DATE, have never been found guilty of any major rules violations. It's an interesting read, but unfortunately UNT gets no further mention than a listing in those comprising the "Last Innocents". WSJ, page D6, June 22, 2011. GO MEAN GREEN!

  35. Hopefully it can be before next year. To have only 5 home games, and one against an FCS oppononent in the brand new stadium is absurd. Surely the cost to backout of the LSU game or KSU (I actually was looking forward to going up there again though) would not be nearly as much for us as it would be for them. Maybe someone with a little more "clout" can inquire about this, becuase so far I've been unsuccessful...

  39. That has been the culture here for a very long time. We value our own local sports team than the national team. That doesn't mean we don't want the U.S. to win or don't have pride. As I said in the previous post....it doesn't help that its soccer. Americans just don't care about the sport and the ones that do only watch the world cup and/or watch the super leagues in Europe. The U.S. lost on saturday because they sucked and they coughed up a 2-0 lead. Had the game been in Seattle or Boston...maybe the attendance would have had more Americans but this isn't some thing that is new to the Americans and I don't know if it would be 90%. The players themselves said that it's something they're used to and it's no big deal. As far as other countries being more supportive of their national teams...well most other countries have A sport or A league(if that) and that's all they really have. That is why they live and breathe this stuff because they have nothing else to look forward to or no other option. The states have the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, college sports, golf and other niche sports like the MLS. I don't think there's anything to be upset about. All this boils down to Mexico kickin the tail of the Americans on Saturday night even after having a 2-0 lead.

  40. Whats the big deal? The Texas Confederate flag that many regiments used to represent themselves during the War Between the States has already been on license plates for years. In fact it's flying in front of every government and school building in the state. It's just that we call it the Lone Star Flag. Rick

  42. I agree that "Mean Green" is the name that is most commonly used to represent our school. I think it is just rubbing some of us the wrong way in that you are stating as fact that it is incorrect to refer to our athletic teams as the "Eagles". You don't seem to have much to back that up and anything anyone brings up to the contrary you dismiss as some sort of cultural tip of the hat to the history of the university. "Eagles" did seem to start being used less around the time of the most recent logo branding along with the birth of SOW. Up until 2005, the endzones at Fouts still had "EAGLES" printed in them. Maybe you'll point to that as being the year of the big change, though I never heard of the university making "Eagles" officially incorrect anymore as was questioned in an earlier post.
