  1. I wholeheartedly agree that KNTU needs to focus more of their UT/Big XII energy toward UNT sports. But I believe this post and CMJ's post get at a necessary function of KNTU. I understand the practical, utilitarian idea of making a university station just like the major stations in the Metroplex. But a college is supposed to provide culture, both to its students and the surrounding community. Should we replace the wind symphony with a 4-piece rock band, just because that's what more college students dig? Should our English lit classes focus on reading People magazine? Yes, practicality is good; but UNT is not supposed to be ITT Tech. While I may not always agree with the way they do it, I am thankful that UNT strives to broaden horizons rather than to be a mirror of pop culture.

  2. I listen to KNTU on the way home to hear the Channel 8 news. Before the Channel 8 news comes on, they have some students reading "rip and read" news. Tonight, I heard 2 stories on Oklahoma football and one about Texas football. Not a word as to whether North Texas fields a football team or not. 4. What bubble were you stuck in, because you should hear some the awesomeness I have been following for 10+ years. Look, I totally agree that KNTU is very jazz and classical oriented. They know that, and they know that will never pull in the big ratings. But this has been their identity for the past X decades. And I think we need that. We need some station, that station, there to provide the outlet that is not mainstream and preserve a necessary part of the Denton culture. And I would also agree that Denton could appreciate a station that is more in line with what you suggest: local rock/hop hop bands, college culture, etc...but IMO it should be another station, not a change by KNTU. This.

  6. Ratings are useless for KNTU anyway, because they can't sell advertising. So why not let the students learn skills and have a creative outlet that might help them earn money after they graduate. There's a place for jazz on KNTU, just not 24 hours (give or take) a day.

  7. I would rather that students learn how to do things that will actually net them careers, aka sports talk, talk, and music people actually want to hear. Wouldn't it be more experience for a student to be programming a station for 250,000 people instead of 45,000? Wouldn't it be nice to have students and alums listening to a station where you can advertise upcoming games, concerts, and other events and just keep them interested in (or bring them back to) their school in general? I have nothing against jazz, but it's a waste of resources for a university run station to have that as its main format. Not a .7, a .1. 0.7% of all DFW, aka just over 45,000 people. Sometimes it's not even a .1, so then it's just not rated instead of being a '.0'.

  8. Don't worry, nobody is listening. Before the -1's keep rolling in from KNTU's dedicated listeners (lol, really?), I think it's sad that the school's dedicated station picks up .1 or nothing at all in Arbitron, largely thanks to a format that guarantees almost no students listen to it. It should be turned into a college station instead of something that 0.7% of all DFW listens to.

  10. Should be plenty of seats available - Tulsa starts with three of first four on the road, including trips to OU and Boise State. They host Oklahoma State on the Sept. 17. Realistically, they'll be 1-3 when we arrive. It will be a pivotal game for both, especially if we roll in at 1-3 or 0-4 as well. When Bill Blankenship was promoted, he hired Brent Guy as defensive coordinator. Guy is the former Utah State head coach who hired Darrell Dickey as his offensive coordinator. It's safe to say Guy is going to be a step down from coordinating the defense. And, that's not good for Tulsa because defense was never its bread and butter. Even with Todd Graham, a former DC, and Keith Patterson, the Golden Hurricane defenses were never stout. They did have their moments; but, generally, TU outscored teams. They will not outscore OU on the road, OSU at home, or Boise State on the road. They will be returning from a road beating at Boise State when we roll into town. After a 10-3 record in 2010, they could be demoralized about their season beginning 1-3. Heck, if Tulane "upsets" them, we'll be facing a very surprised 0-4 Tulsa team on October 1. I'm not sold on TU's elevation of Bill Blankenship as a coach. He was a high school wonder-coach at powerhouse Tulsa Union for years. But, it's like Dodge and his Southlake story: If you've seen Union's facilities and compare them to other in the Tulsa area, there really is no excuse not to succeed there. The only school rivaling it from Tulsa to OKC is Tulsa suburbs' Jenks. It's true that Blankenship put in four years as an assistant to Todd Graham. And, Todd Graham left him with a veteran team. I'm just not incredibly impressed with his assistant hires, and not sold that he - or, they - can do the job at this level. When Tulsa and North Texas square off on October 1, both will likely be 1-3 or 0-4. This game will be a season changer for one or the other. I think it has the look of the "turn around/springboard" game for McCarney and his group of coaches at North Texas. They are shockingly longer in the tooth than TU's new staff. If the players respond well, we'll have the "upset" of Tulsa on October 1, and will sail into the meat of our Sun Belt schedule with the wind at our backs. So...let's go up there and watch my undergraduate alma mater pummel my grad school alma mater! Now, they will pay the price for hiring a coach whose main experience as at a rich, suburban are high school. My how times and fortunes change. We're 6-16 all-time against Tulsa and haven't beaten them since 1969 - a seven game losing streak. We haven't beaten them in Tulsa since 1968. 2005: Kragthorpe versus Dickey, 54-2 Tulsa 2006: Kragthorpe versus Dickey II, 28-3 Tulsa 2008: Graham versus Dodge, 56-26, Tulsa 2011: Blankenship versus McCarney...I like our chance here. We've finally got a coaching staff with more experience than TU! (Also, as a side note: We were conference mates with Tulsa and played them for 14 consecutive seasons, 1957-1970. This is a regional rivalry that never should have died. Tulsa is a school we should be playing every year since they come into Texas and recruit heavily. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech have tried to make their annual Big 12 game another OU-Texas rivalry. We should do the same with Tulsa. Among current FBS schools, we've only played New Mexico State (34) and ULM (27) more than we've played Tulsa (22). As close as they are geographically, this is a game we should be playing more annually, if not semi-annually.)

NM Green, Tulsa is to OK what NYC is to NY, so lots going on around Tulsa the weekend of the game like; Fall Fun at the Farm at Pocola, Haunted Castle Halloween Festival in Muskogee, A Candlelight Walking Tour in Doaksville and don't forget Reding Farm Maize & Fear Festival in Chickosha, but the event I'm taking my dog to is the Punpkin Palooza in Hobart!

  15. I'm not sure what the intended message was from this post. It says you listen, which I inferred to mean you listen on a regular basis, but you call out one night where there were stories about other universities, but not UNT. I'm assuming you are talking about the sports segment. One night isn't really a trend, though it looks like other posters are dog piling with the assumption that this is normal coverage. I listen to KNTU periodically on the way home, but not every night of the week. I've never had a problem with their coverage of UNT athletics. Yes, they do cover sports news outside of UNT, but when there is something newsworthy with UNT athletics, I've found it's usually covered too. It's a daily news show. The statue story didn't really break yesterday. The movie night story, from what I can tell, can only be validated through someone's recount of a twitter posting and isn't a sports story, though I suppose could have been reported in another segment if an unknown movie being shown in two months at the stadium is newsworthy right now. The Mitchell story came out on Monday, not yesterday. It wouldn't surprise me if it was covered on Monday. My two cents.

  20. Interesting article in today's Wall Street Journal regarding "The NCAA's Last Innocents". It seems there are only 17 FBS schools left that have not been in big trouble with the NCAA over rules violations, etc. UNT is one of the "innocents". The list includes: University of North Texas Boston College Northwestern Penn State Stanford Air Force Boise St. Bowling Green Central Mich. Colo. St. Fla. Atlantic Kent St. Ohio Rice Troy UAB W. Mich Interesting list. These are schools that, TO DATE, have never been found guilty of any major rules violations. It's an interesting read, but unfortunately UNT gets no further mention than a listing in those comprising the "Last Innocents". WSJ, page D6, June 22, 2011. GO MEAN GREEN!

  21. Once more we have a classic example of posters with differences of opinion getting called out. Lets face it...that's all it is. Do you honestly think that because I happen to agree with the article it means I don't care for UNT as much as you or the next person? The problem with "half glass full" people is that nothing ever changes because they are always "believing" or making up the "greatness" of the current state of things. I support UNT but also think that it could be a much better place.

  22. Once more we have some of UNT's own seeing the glass as half-empty. I challenge anyone to find any real evidence to support the fact that UNT was or is "a collage of last resort". The campus, while not the most scenic I have seen, is certainly much nicer on the eyes than it was when I was an undergrad in the late 60's. There are hard courses and easier courses at every college and university in this great nation of ours, including Harvard and Yale and all the ivy league schools and the military academies, etc. UNT has, and has had, tremendously well respected academic programs in many areas. I find it simply incredible that some want to find something to criticize and belittle UNT about at every opportunity. People choose a college or university to attend for any number of reasons...should I say I chose to attend UNT because I didn't get into Yale and therefore UNT was my college of last resort because it had lower academic standards? BS, plain and simple. I chose UNT (never applied at Yale by the way) for any number of reasons, and am darn happy I did, and proud of being a member of the great Mean Green nation. Never once have I considered the campus "ugly", the buildings unsightly or the programs of anything but a high standard. My two degrees from UNT have served me and my family quite well...thank you very much. Like most things, your college experience and the worth of your degree is what you make of it! Time for UNT alumni and friends to start believing in the greatness that is UNT and thinking a bit more of themselves than to think they went to a "college of last resort". Stupid thinking...or "stinking thinking" as has been said...

  23. So enjoy the hell out of that half-season and worry about what could happen later. Goodness, the pessimism on here could fill and cause the half-empty glass runneth-over.

  24. This is what we are facing still as a program. Getting decent people to come play here in the future seems like it should be easier because of the new stadium, but looking at TFLF's post about possibilities for other games here, we are going to have to go outside of the area most likely. That isn't all bad, as seen by Indiana coming here in the fall. But those openings, I fear, will just get filled with more one and done road games if the athletic department needs more funds. Look at next year's home schedule. The only OOC game in Denton is against Texas Southern, then we get 4 SBC home opponents. That will be tough for us to have a huge year in attendance, since we know how fickle the Denton residents/UNT fans are regarding the opponents that come here. The snowball turns into an avalanche if you have another losing season in 2012, because attendance starts falling back down and you have to schedule another $$$ game to pay the AD's bills. It really does make it seem more realistic that we set up a series with Texas State to get a name opponent in here that will bring some people. I think it makes a lot of sense.

  25. Just asking....what makes you think attendance in the 2-3,000 range would make for a "financially viable" program at UNT? Basketball at UNT averages around 3500 and it is not funding itself. Is basketball any more expensive than baseball? Just asking...not making a statement here. Do baseball players get "full" scholarships like football and basketball players or can they be split into smaller and smaller pieces...some claiming to be on scholarship while only receiving book money in the "lesser sports"? If scholarship costs are way below basketball then maybe attendance at 2-3000 would make it work...as long as ticket prices were appropriate. But, how many of the attendees at these school's games are actually "paid" attendees? I just don't know enough about the economics of college baseball, but, hopefully, someone here does and can shed some light on the subject. GO MEAN GREEN!

  26. --I've posted several times about energy... My last four rides all have used 23-25 MPG. Dodge mini-van, Honda CRV, Mercedes-300, Pymouth mini-van. Mass transportation is not an option here in West Texas. I am 1/2 mile from work, wife is 2.5 miles. I guess yawl know but I-20 past Monahans and I-10 past Kerrville has a 80 mph speed limit. If you have been there you understand why.

  27. Rotnei Clarke was released from Arkansas earlier this week. It would be nice to have a shot to get him, even though he would only have 1 year of eligibility after sitting out a year. There is a little baggage with the family wanting to always have their 2 cents. He is a great shooter and would be able to fill it up in the Belt. More than likely I figure he will end up at ORU or Tulsa, but it would nice to get lucky and have him show up on campus.

  28. i was tempted to -1 your ass right off the bat, but i stuck with and rode your comment out. as it turns out, you're completely right. it's very wine and cheese hoity toity; a life-force drain of the highest order. i started at UNT as a music major, but changed majors while i was there because the music department -- almost to a person -- refuses to accept that there is any other respectable genre of music beyond classical or jazz.

  31. I agree with greenjoe that KNTU should cover UNT sports first and foremost. I suspect there is always something to say. As someone said, could you imagine UT's, TCU's (fill in the blank) station covering UNT sports before their own? But I strongly disagree about the call to change formats. In a recent thread, there was a discussion about being proud of the university. There is one undisputed thing that North Texas does that is better than any other university in the country and that is its jazz program. Why would you not want the university radio station to mirror what is best and unique at our school? Besides, a .7 rating is not so bad for a college run station with no advertising. We would be elated if .7 of the Metroplex population attended a home football game!

  32. I agree, KNTU shouldn't be pandering to all 5 jazz listeners in the DFW area it should be a service first to the RTVF students and the University as a whole. It doesn't help the students when all they learn is how to be a DJ in a dead format and rip and read AP wires.

  44. If they broadcasted to an area with a population as large as DFW then yes they would. Like I said before, KNTU broadcasts to DFW, not just Denton. DFW is a pro sports town and one could argue so is Denton with the lack of support UNT receives.
