  1. My question about China is simple: who's protecting our cokes from them?

  2. You know, at first glance, Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison have little in common...different parties and policies, etc...but, that's exactly what the government wants you to believe. Even a quick glance shows some interesting similarities...both were lawyers, both were Presbyterians...their names even are remarkably similar. Their names, you ask? What's similar about Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison? Well, nothing...until I tell you that Grover is Cleveland's MIDDLE name...his given first name is, wait for it, STEPHEN!!! Holy cow! What, still not seeing it? let me, literally, spell it out for you: B-E-N-J-A-M-I-N-H-A-R-R-I-S-O-N ---> 16 letters S-T-E-P-H-E-N-C-L-E-V-E-L-A-N-D ---> 16 letters Oh my...this in and of itself is telling, but there's MORE! Grover Cleveland was from Caldwell, New Jersey...Benjamin Harrison was from North Bend, Ohio...yes, OHIO...same state who's largest city is...CLEVELAND!!! One or two of these bits of evidence could just be played off as coincidence...but all of it piled together can lead one to only one inevitable and logical conclusion...Benjamin Harrison was conceptualized by the US Government and never actually existed. Grover Cleveland actually served THREE successive terms as US President. Cleveland was loathed by William McKinley, who took office in 1897 and spent much of his first term in office attempting to pass legislation to establish a 2 term limit for Presidents. Cleveland still had many Democratic friends in Congress who halted the President's efforts...but the 1900 election saw a shift in both houses of Congress and it was clear that McKinley would succeed. So Theodore Roosevelt shot him (look it up). Roosevelt wasn't a Cleveland supporter...but what he was was clairvoyant...a psychic, if you will and he knew that his 5th cousin Franklin Roosevelt would end up needing nearly 4 terms to instill his socialist agenda and ruin the American way of life (Teddy Roosevelt was actually born in the Ukraine...again, look it up). So Teddy offed McKinley, created Benjamin Harrison and made him the 23rd president, breaking up the 12 years of Grover Cleveland and then, as he later taught Joseph Goebbels, if you simply repeat the lie it will eventually become truth. By 1920, Benjamin Harrison had become a "real" person and the rest, is as we say, history. Or should I say, "history."

  3. I listen to KNTU on the way home to hear the Channel 8 news. Before the Channel 8 news comes on, they have some students reading "rip and read" news. Tonight, I heard 2 stories on Oklahoma football and one about Texas football. Not a word as to whether North Texas fields a football team or not. 9. And, the challenge with the half-empty folks is that they tend to be negative about just about everything. They can't see the "good' for all the things they define as "problems" and want to "fix"...as long as it is "fixed" they way they think it should be "fixed". They claim they "just want UNT to be better", yet nothing is ever "better" for them. I guess it's all a matter of perspective. One's opinion that the campus is "ugly" or that UNT is a "college of last resort" in no more valid than any other opinion, yet the half-empty folks are as convinced that they see it as everyone else sees it as the half-full folks are convinced otherwise. One can see problems around every corner or one can look to see the positive. Neither is 100% correct nor 100% incorrect. All a matter of perspective and what your general outlook on things is...start from the position of positive or start from the position of negative. Your choice...and it is a choice. Funny how folks that have a more positive outlook cannot for the life of them figure out why someone would want to have a more negative outlook (they often refer to it as a realistic outlook as cover for their negativity), and those with a more negative outlook on things cannot figure out how others can always find something positive in most every situation. Funny how that works, isn't it?

  11. Meh, I guess it depends who you're talking about. Those on GMG that think we have a legitimate case for MWC (or heaven forbid Big XII) are definitely in that boat. Those of us, like myself, who think we currently fit the Belt are much more level headed. It seems like a large number of Texas State and UTSA fans are very quick to bash UNT and put themselves ahead of us. We're ahead of those two schools, but not by as much as the homers on here think. Let's go out and win so we don't get mentioned in the same breath as them.

  12. You are right. I don't know why 61 wastes his time on a soon to be defunct conference's board talking to fans of a team that have never played FBS football. AND IS NOT EVEN IN THAT SOON TO BE DEFUNCT CONFERENCE. Seems like a waste of time, much like playing SWTS in football would be. Maybe you should take your rants back to the Southland conference board. I'm sure all 3 members would be entralled with your opinions.

  14. Yawn. Until they are on the schedule, I could care less what they do. This is the exact reason I hate college blowhards trying to measure penis size on the internet. Usually it's just 2 dudes sword fighting and the rest of us are innocent bystanders. They should be arrest for indecent exposure. I really wish our 2-3 fans who think it's cool to stick their words into every hole on the internet would stop. txbobcat whateverhisnameis is the same type of person as 61. Especially since they aren't even a part of the WAC, a conference on the decline, but pretend to now have the credibility the schools that built that conference and then left have. Unless fan from another school comes over here or there to be funny or helpful, it's not worth reading and usually ends up in face palms for every fan. Every fan base has those people and the rest of the fan base is embarrassed for them.

  18. Yes, because I am the only one on here who throws out a response about something else, or threadjacks a discussion in an attempt to bring out some levity. I don't really blame you if you can't keep up with all the running bits/jokes/gags on here, but someone once suggested that we take a drink every time Kram used quotation marks. Since you use a distinctive paragraph break (a lot) I decided to continue the bit.

  20. Silver...you have to be kidding...what a horrendous example you cite. I am not offended, just amazed that anyone would use that as an example. You can do much better than to use that example...it doesn't even work! Note" You are correct that "realistic" doesn't have to mean negative...but many folks who are negative by nature often use "realistic" as their cover excuse. Don't believe it...sit in a few business meetings where some colleagues make negative comments as a general rule...ask them about it and they'll say something to the effect...I was not negative, i was just being realistic...while everyone else in the room rolls their eyes and knows the truth. How do I know...well, I led such meetings and attended such meetings during a 30+ year banking career...and, I WAS one of those people for a short period in my career. Even had it pointed out to me by a very close friend. After that, it didn't take me long to see it for what it really was and return to a more positive attitude and outlook. Got a lot more accomplished and had a much more successful team after that revelation. Experience in that world is a great teacher. You are also correct that it doesn't change many people's minds very often or change the way they look at life, but just on the oft chance one person is able to sit down and take a good hard look (as happened to me), it might just help a small bit for someone. Going through life looking for the negatives just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Bad things happen, and you definitely cannot put lipstick on that pig. The pig example is much better than your Auschwitz one, by the way...But, the pig farmer sees lots of beauty in his pigs and the folks working on those pig farms have jobs, and I do love ham, bacon and pulled pork sandwiches. Lots of good can come from that pig....lipstick or not. And, calling a pig a pig is not negative in the first place. So, yes, calling a pig a pig (which it is) is very realistic...calling UNT's campus ugly is not realistic, it is negative and simply an opinion. Calling UNT a school of last resort is being negative, not realistic and is definitely some one's opinion. I think I'll leave it at that.

  21. I think the perception that most students are at UNT as a second choice would only come from the sports fan or the guy who grew up assuming he'd attend the school he'd followed his whole life. So they may sort of feel like UNT was a second choice. But for the majority, they didn't grow up with a choice school in mind. Once senior year came they looked around and chose UNT as the best fit for whatever reason.

  22. It's a great list to included on. And, you can be on the list and have a good team as Stanford and Penn State show! So much for the "you have to cheat to win" school of thought.

  23. Just as a FYI - from the Belt: ULM, Troy, and Western Kentucky all won the so-called "National Championship" at the IAA/FCS level. Of those three, only Troy has seen significant success at the IA/FBS level. As for the rest of the Belt (that came from IAA/FCS)... NT made the playoffs but never won a game. FIU and FAU went from start-up to FBS in like 4 years (and FAU had a deep playoff run in their last FCS year). UL has never been FCS. ASU was a doninant force in the IAA/FCS playoffs before moving up. Not sure about the MUTS, I think that they were a lot like UNT, made a few playoffs - maybe won a game or two - but no national championships. But regardless, you can see that FCS success does not correlate to FBS success. In fact, its much the opposite. That is like comparing apples to oranges. My advise - stay off their board. It is really sad over there. You have about 15 fans left, with half of those being loud mouths from UTSA. All the real schools will be gone after this year and their fans are checked out. The WAC will die on its own without copying and asting articles about it dying. They all know what a craphole conference it is now, just let them be.

  26. Maybe you should consider a corellation here? Really kind of funny that the above is an exact quote. And you should also consider the fact the citizens of this state are some of the least taxed citizens of any state. Your pointing out the overspending by the Republican Party would carry a lot more weight if you would ever acknowledge that the Democrats have spent at a much higher rate since taking power (and would have spent more if either Gore or Kerry was in office instead of Bush). Perry scares the hell out of me (as a Presidential candidate). Pres. Bush had a moral compass. Perry doesn't.

  32. 61, do you really spend a lot of time on the WAC board? You're certainly entitled to a wish list with your opinions, so I'll stop at that As for the Fran vs. DMac debate, I have a lot of respect for what Fran built at UNM and then TCU. But in a head-to-head battle of current wits, I like the sum of our parts (assistants) much much more than their's. This smack is exactly why we should be playing these guys regularly. Similar schools, towns, regionally close, etc...

  36. It's fine. Look back at attendance figures and revenue for the NFL 15 years after it began. Pathetic. The NFL was a joke as it was a bunch of adults playing a college game. MLS needs to tweak a few things... stop "Americanizing" the sport. Get rid of the conferences and the playoffs, award the MLS Cup to the best regular season team. Emphasize the U.S. Open Cup as the "big tournament" for America. Place more emphasis on CONCACAF Champions League as our big international tournament. I think where MLS fails (and the whole U.S. soccer organization in general) is trying to win over fans of the NFL. The UEFA Champions League final was horribly handled by Fox. They brought in their NFL Sunday star Curt Menefee to anchor the final, and used the Fox NFL theme music. And that horrible Michael Strahan segment explaining the difference between American football and soccer... quite frankly, it was insulting.

  37. Plus, imagine what it can do for recruiting when we can have the picture of a first round NBA draft pick on the wall somewhere. I think he will be here for a year and a half, but just the fact that he was here at all says something about our program and will help for a long, long time.

  38. I have little disagreement with the football part of this commentary, but I don't agree with his concept of NT being the hippie dominated college of last resort. Your theory doesn't hold a lot of water relating the strong counter culture that existed at NT in the 1960's with poor athletes. This was the period of the strongest teams in NT history and student attendance was as good or better than it is today despite having only a fraction of today's enrollment. As far as being the last choice for students, a very broad statement that may be partially true. I came to NT because at the time it had the best accounting school in the state. Others came to take advantage of other academic strengths and some came just because of it was supposed to be at one time a big party school. Personally, I know very few who came to NT because they couldn't attend elsewhere. Obviously NT benefited by being a relatively inexpensive choice in a big metro area. As far as a run-down campus, I've have never thought that about NT. It is a state school and as such is funded like the majority of such schools. It doesn't have access to the resources of UT and A & M but is about on par with everyone else. NT athletes has historically suffered from a lack of emphasis from the administration. I don't think anyone can disagree with that concept, however trying to tie that into the overall poor quality of the whole institution is way off the mark in my opinion.

  39. See, that is what has me worried. I am a pessimist (I used to be an optimist, but I am a lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan and that will beat the optimism out of anyone). I am very excited/optimistic about the coming season, at least until my pessimism kicks in and I worry about our defense, rebounding and team chemistry. Even then, the first game of the season can't get here fast enough for me. This coming season looks to be the next big step in the right direction for a program that has been going in the right direction for some time now.

  43. Well, I mean, nothing is illegal until you get caught. Rape laws, in theory, are nothing but feel good laws by you definition if you have a good disguise or a secluded place for the body. Give me one circumstance where NOT having this law could be a GOOD thing? Yes...it is a difficult, if not impossible thing to enforce, but the illusion the law creates is enough to help keep people safe...same goes for seatbelt laws, speed limits. Flawless? Certainly not...but practical to have on the books and completely pointless to veto. BTW, in Connecticut it is illegal to use one's cell phone while driving...and other neighboring states...New York, Massachusetts...have laws against texting and what's called "distracted driving." Again, is it difficult to enforce? Of course...but I promise you on the rare occasions I talk on my phone in my car I am very aware of whether or not a trooper or local officer is in the vicinity. These are effective deterrents.
    1 point
  44. True it would be difficult if not impossible to enforce. But some one explain this to me, Perry used the veto saying the the government should not "micromanage". Yet, earlier he signed a bill that required a woman wanting an abortion to get a sonogram and listen to the heartbeat of the fetus. Is this not the state micromanaging?
    1 point
  45. Well then, lets repeal all the drunk driving laws.
    1 point
  46. Actually a good decision by Perry. It was an unenforcable, feel-good law to begin with. What was next, a law against talking to a passenger while driving? Changing the radio while driving? Putting on makeup while driving? Looking in your glovebox/wallet/purse while driving? All of these are equally distracting. You can't legislate all stupid and dangerous human behavior.

  47. The batteries are recyclable and with the volt, it's guaranteed for 100,000 miles. A Volt will take anyone living in the city (or the suburbs) on their average commute of 21 miles each way on just battery power. For those living out in West Texas, it has a small gas generator that powers the electric motor for extended drives. The Nissan Leaf has a stated range of 100 miles on a full charge. Both fully recharge in 8 hours on 120 and 4 hours on 220. This might not be too exciting for some people, but it's a really great start. With the technology improving on wind chargers, an affordable home wind charging unit (or solar panel unit) to use primarily on your electric car might be available in the near future.
