  1. Who cares? At the end of the day, they're still Texas State University-San Marcos with a .453 win percentage the last 20 years in FCS football.

  2. My prayers are with the Dibrell family. Things like this put life in perspective and really bring to light how ridiculous it is to criticize young men that leave the NT program early. I was guilty of this and leaving the program early is nothing compared to leaving Earth too soon. Remember to always tell your family and friends that you love them everytime you see them, because we never know when it will be our last encounter with them. I pray for his family through their period of mourning and hope they will live with found memories of Sam. A tragic loss, and I can't even imagine the loss of a child. May God bless the Dibrells.

  6. True it would be difficult if not impossible to enforce. But some one explain this to me, Perry used the veto saying the the government should not "micromanage". Yet, earlier he signed a bill that required a woman wanting an abortion to get a sonogram and listen to the heartbeat of the fetus. Is this not the state micromanaging?

  9. I have little disagreement with the football part of this commentary, but I don't agree with his concept of NT being the hippie dominated college of last resort. Your theory doesn't hold a lot of water relating the strong counter culture that existed at NT in the 1960's with poor athletes. This was the period of the strongest teams in NT history and student attendance was as good or better than it is today despite having only a fraction of today's enrollment. As far as being the last choice for students, a very broad statement that may be partially true. I came to NT because at the time it had the best accounting school in the state. Others came to take advantage of other academic strengths and some came just because of it was supposed to be at one time a big party school. Personally, I know very few who came to NT because they couldn't attend elsewhere. Obviously NT benefited by being a relatively inexpensive choice in a big metro area. As far as a run-down campus, I've have never thought that about NT. It is a state school and as such is funded like the majority of such schools. It doesn't have access to the resources of UT and A & M but is about on par with everyone else. NT athletes has historically suffered from a lack of emphasis from the administration. I don't think anyone can disagree with that concept, however trying to tie that into the overall poor quality of the whole institution is way off the mark in my opinion.

  10. Thanks for the board pic, Matt! That clears the discussion up. I'm on board with the SMU and Tulsa series. Those are great regional rivalries we've picked up and dusted off. That's an in-state and out-of-state OOC pair I could live with playing every year or every other year. The four games with SMU from 2014-2017 will move that series to 37 games, moving it to 2nd overall. Tulsa in 2011, and 2014-16 give it a four game boost to 26 overall. But, in conference rival Arkansas State will have caught them by then. As for the "money games" - it's nice to break the OU/Texas cycle and move into Big Ten and SEC territory for some games. Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Iowa, and Indiana will make nice visits. Army is great. K-State, LSU, and Arkansas are familiar territory, albeit not as familiar as Norman and Austin. It does kind of feel like a momentum crush to have only 5 home games in many seasons. And, if we have nine SBC games in the future, that wraps everything from now until 2019.

  13. Thread started by TXSTCat68 Only UNT would Brag about......... Hiring a head coach with a 56-85 record and call it an improvement. You guys have to have the worst run program in all DI football. From 1991-2005 your win average was .390. Under Dodge you guys had a win average of .140. Wow mow I know why you guys suffer from little man syndrome. Hell at least we TXST Bobcats have TWO national titles. I don't think there is a single Team in the Sunbelt that has a national championship title. Forgive me if I'm wrong I don't care to check. Bottom line UNT is going no where fast. Sure you have new stadium. But to be honest it's ugly. And it will look worse when your team loses in it. Good luck to all of you and glad your not in our conference. We can play you out of conferece. Oh wait you only play body bag games for big dollars. Must be fun to watch you team fed to lions like bird meat. http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=451&f=2368&t=7614653&p=1&sto=MS_101055066

  14. I have yet to get him on the phone, but I did pick up confirmation from Rod Lancaster's grandmother, his current head coach and his former high school coach that he has committed to UNT. He plays for Life School in Oak Cliff. He's is about 6-2, 200, and is a big weight room guy who has improved his stock since he was a sophomore. Lancaster has been an all-district selection in each of the last two years and really put himself on UNT's radar at one of the team's summer camps. Lancaster ran a 4.4 and a 4.5 40 in his two attempts. He then went head-to-head with one of UNT's top defensive back targets and won that battle five straight times. 15. 61, do you really spend a lot of time on the WAC board? You're certainly entitled to a wish list with your opinions, so I'll stop at that As for the Fran vs. DMac debate, I have a lot of respect for what Fran built at UNM and then TCU. But in a head-to-head battle of current wits, I like the sum of our parts (assistants) much much more than their's. This smack is exactly why we should be playing these guys regularly. Similar schools, towns, regionally close, etc...

  24. The bar in the Sun Belt isn't high. We came pretty close to breaking even last year with a banged up squad...so that was basically playing with inexperienced guys. Tulsa is overhyped. The coaching staff is simply stacked with guys who know the game. Other SBC schools have hired what I consider to be high risk coaches, none well known or known to build FBS-level programs. Look regionally, UT and OU coming off losing seasons hired Mack Brown and Bob Stoops respectively in 1998 and 1999. They both won in their first seasons with tougher schedules. We've got a coach who's been up there, and who has been up there his whole career. It's been all BCS, FBS, Division I-A, whatever you want to call it for Dan McCarney. You've got the architect of the Kansas defense under Mangino in Bowen. You've got a guy whose special teams work helped Colorado and Boise State to annual bowl games in Riddle. Look...the pieces are here on the coaching side. Even if we lose to FUI and Houston to open the season, their players won't be running back to the sidelines like OU's players were saying, "Coach, coach! They're not even trying to disguise their coverages!" On the defensive side of the ball, Dodge tried to man up on OU all night. McCarney, Bowen, and Riddle aren't that stupid (yes, I know Dodge eventually progressed, but that night was stupid). Anyone who beats us this year is going to be in a dog fight for 60 minutes. I agree that having McCarney, Bowen, Riddle, etc. on board is good for at least five wins. The Tulsa game is pivotal. We'll both have been through tough early stretches. They'll be loaded with returning starters on both sides of the ball; we'll have the better coaching staff. The theories of those of us who say coaching makes a huge difference at this level will leave theory and be put into raw practice that night. We will not be plundered in 2011 like we have been since 2005 under Dickey and Dodge. This is real. Many of us have never seen real. Those who saw Hayden Fry teams of the 70 and the late 60s Mitchell/Rust teams saw what competent coaching can do. Also, throw Corky Nelson into the mix for beat Texas Tech, Texas, and Rice (yes, I know the referees gifted Texas with a touchdown in the official record books). That was us as I-AAs beating three SWC schools in one season. We have that caliber of coach. We're just so used to seeing chicanery that we don't know what we have.

  25. This is what we are facing still as a program. Getting decent people to come play here in the future seems like it should be easier because of the new stadium, but looking at TFLF's post about possibilities for other games here, we are going to have to go outside of the area most likely. That isn't all bad, as seen by Indiana coming here in the fall. But those openings, I fear, will just get filled with more one and done road games if the athletic department needs more funds. Look at next year's home schedule. The only OOC game in Denton is against Texas Southern, then we get 4 SBC home opponents. That will be tough for us to have a huge year in attendance, since we know how fickle the Denton residents/UNT fans are regarding the opponents that come here. The snowball turns into an avalanche if you have another losing season in 2012, because attendance starts falling back down and you have to schedule another $$$ game to pay the AD's bills. It really does make it seem more realistic that we set up a series with Texas State to get a name opponent in here that will bring some people. I think it makes a lot of sense.

  26. No. 98 North Texas COACH: Dan McCarney (first season at North Texas; 56-85 in 12 seasons overall) LAST SEASON: 3-9, 3-5 (T-6th in Sun Belt) OFFENSE: RB Lance Dunbar ran for 1,553 yards and 13 TDs last season, and ranked sixth nationally at 129.4 yards per game. He had eight 100-yard games, including three with at least 215 yards. In two games against Big Six foes that went to bowls (Clemson and Kansas State), he rambled for 387 yards and three TDs. He also is a good receiver and obviously one of the leading contenders for Sun Belt player-of-the-year honors. But he'll run behind a line that is missing three starters - and each received all-league notice last season. C J.J. Johnson is a key; he was injured in the opener and missed the rest of the season, but he has all-league potential. Two projected line starters are redshirt freshmen. Derek Thompson was one of four quarterbacks who started for the Mean Green last season and one of three that suffered a season-ending injury (in his case, a broken leg). He's healthy now and won the starting job in spring practice, but he'll have to continue to fend off JC transfer Brent Osborn in summer camp. The quarterbacks have a solid group of receivers with which to work, led by Darius Carey and Tyler Stradford, who began his career at Oklahoma. Because of the quarterback injuries last season, Dunbar basically provided all the offense down the stretch. While the passing attack should be better this season, the rebuilt line means there are some questions about the running game. DEFENSE: McCarney has a defensive background and was hired off the staff at Florida, where he was the defensive line coach. He needs to work some magic with the Mean Green's defensive line because UNT was weak against the run last season, allowing 184.9 yards per game. Both starting tackles will be new, but there is some size, most notably with 336-pounder Tevinn Cantly. Both starting ends return from a team that had 19 sacks; UNT has just 91 sacks in the past six seasons, and McCarney and new coordinator Clint Bowen must find a way to apply some pressure. Jeremy Phillips and Zach Orr head what could be a solid group of linebackers. The secondary looks fine. CB Royce Hill should contend for all-league honors, and there is a lot of experience at safety. SPECIAL TEAMS: Backup WR Brelan Chancellor was excellent as a kick returner last season, averaging 28.0 yards per return and taking two back for TDs. He and Carey shared punt returner duties, but neither did anything of note in that role. K Zach Olen was one of the better freshman kickers in the nation last season, going 13-of-15, including a 53-yarder. P Will Atterberry is fine, but the coverage units need to be shored up. THE BUZZ: McCarney, the former coach at Iowa State, takes over a program on a slight uptick. Injuries wrecked the Mean Green last season, but there is some talent on hand. Dunbar is a great building block, and if he gets some help from the passing attack, this could be quite a potent offense. McCarney kept offensive coordinator Mike Canales, so continuity on offense should be a plus. Still, UNT has to get a heck of a lot better against the run before it can hope to go bowling again. The early-season schedule is a bear. UNT opens at defending league champ Florida International, then plays Houston, Alabama, Indiana and Tulsa in the next four (Houston and Indiana are home games, in UNT's new stadium). The schedule then softens considerably, and a .500 season is a legit goal in McCarney's first season. Rivals #100-#96 http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1232725

  27. Maybe the automobile has become such an integral part of just about every american family that we regard it as an inalienable right to own and operate. But I regard the operation of a vehicle in the weight range of 3000 to 7000 lbs on a public road a privilege not a right. That makes it subject to any sort of governmental regulation regarding it's safe operation as far as I'm concerned.

  29. Well, I mean, nothing is illegal until you get caught. Rape laws, in theory, are nothing but feel good laws by you definition if you have a good disguise or a secluded place for the body. Give me one circumstance where NOT having this law could be a GOOD thing? Yes...it is a difficult, if not impossible thing to enforce, but the illusion the law creates is enough to help keep people safe...same goes for seatbelt laws, speed limits. Flawless? Certainly not...but practical to have on the books and completely pointless to veto. BTW, in Connecticut it is illegal to use one's cell phone while driving...and other neighboring states...New York, Massachusetts...have laws against texting and what's called "distracted driving." Again, is it difficult to enforce? Of course...but I promise you on the rare occasions I talk on my phone in my car I am very aware of whether or not a trooper or local officer is in the vicinity. These are effective deterrents.

  30. Just a few ideas, possibly bordering on absurd, so don't go saying that I am suggesting anything or pushing for something. Is Track & Field necessary for conference memberships? SMU cut theirs prior to joining CUSA. Other than at a few select top national programs, do any spectators at all pay to watch Track & Field? If the answer is no for these questions , which it is for both, then why not eventually cancel the program for something that the university community has an interest in supporting? Like Octopus Inc in the movie Fierce Creatures, stop running some kind of humanitarian mission and get rid of everything that the people will not pay to see. Use those scholarships for baseball, hockey, mens soccer and any other sport that fans (other than Mom, Dad & their little Suzy Rottencrotch) will want to support. A large budget scholarship sport doesn't really have a purpose if nobody has an interest in watching it. Nonessential non-spectator sports should compete only on the club level. Keep mens golf because of the team history and tennis because the investment in facilities has already been made, but evaluate the worth of every other program. OK, please tell me how I'm wrong. Fire away........

  32. I think I heard several years ago that new stadiums had to be designed to be able to have all fans removed from the stadium within a certain time frame. Most of your older stadiums have smaller walkways because they were build many years ago and are grandfathered in. Any new additions to these older stadiums include crowd movement in there new additions.

  33. --- Democrats are decent people too. They aren't like some try to portray them... Both groups have their rats.. Gingrich was one of the worse and made Clinton look like a saint if you really looked into everything that he has done. I don't need to go into details. They may not always agree with the other party but they are patriotic and mostly Christian people. Personally I hated Iraq from day one because I did not want to see Americans die for what I thought was a poor reason... Guess what, the WMD didn't exist and Iraq had zero to do with 9-11 although some implied that they did. As for other reasons, compare the economy at the end of 2000 with the end of 2008. Also compare the national debt of those two years.... it doubled.... which means one administration's debt equaled all 42 previous ones. So much for the claim of being financially conservative.. The claims a lot of people try to present just aren't accurate. .

  34. ---My wife had a smaller SUV for a while. After driving it on a longer trip I never drove it on one again. The steering was way to sensitive to please me mostly because of the shorter length [wheel track]. Going at highway/freeway speed, that sensitivity and shortness was setting up a rollover condition. It was great in town when driving lower speeds, [no freeways here, just a loop] and easy to park but never again would I own another one.

  35. Sure, but let's do it honestly. Let the market control the switch to alternative fuels. As soon as a cheaper alternative is found, the switch will be made. You can't force people to buy eletric cars because that's what the government thinks they should own. The only thing that will get any alternative energy in the mainstream is if it is cheaper than oil and easy to access/use. Come up with that, and fortune awaits.

  42. In posting about the Tulsa game, I figured I'd pull out the bat and beat the dead "Who's Our Rival" horse. Here is a list of schools we've played most often, and the last time we played them: SWT/Texas State - 39 (1994) New Mexico State - 34 (2004) SMU - 33 (2007) Sam Houston State - 30 (1994) Stephen F. Austin - 29 (1994) ULM - 27 (2010) Tulsa - 22 (2008) UTEP - 21 (1980) Arkansas State - 20 (2010) Memphis - 20 (1980, regular season - 2003, bowl) TCU - 18 (2002) Cincinnati - 17 (1973, regular season - 2002, bowl) Louisville - 17 (1995) Louisiana - 15 (2010) Baylor - 13 (2004) Houston - 12 (1998) Louisiana Tech - 11 (2006) Nevada - 11 (1999) Oklahoma State - 11 (1994) Middle Tennessee - 10 (2010) Northwestern State (La.) - 10 (1994) Future Schedules - Out of conference (correct me if I have these wrong): 2012 @ LSU @ Kansas State 2013 Ohio Ball State @ Georgia Army 2014 @ Texas SMU @Army @ Tulsa 2015 @SMU @Iowa Tulsa 2016 SMU Tulsa @ Florida @ Army 2017 Army @Iowa @SMU 2018 @ Army @ Arkansas SMU Happy to see SMU and Tulsa on the future schedule. Very solid. The series with Army is classic. Love that as well. I also like tapping into the MAC. Now more than ever with Midwesterner Dan McCarney piloting the ship. Correct me, if I'm wrong, but I think I see these home dates available: 2012 - Two home dates available 2015, 2017, and 2018 - One home date available Available, from the "rivalry" list to play us at home in: 2012: TCU, Baylor, Tulsa 2015: Texas State, New Mexico State, TCU, UTEP, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, Baylor 2017: TCU, Memphis, Cincinnati, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, Baylor, Oklahoma State 2018: UTEP, Memphis, Cincinnati, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, Oklahoma State Would be nice to see some old rivalry games with schools now in the Big East (Cincy, Louisville...*sigh*...we were once conference mates), but it's unlikely that they'd do one shot home game with us. Ditto, Oklahoma State...although they did go to Louisiana last year, so it's not unheard of. TCU probably won't "bow" to play us at home ever again. Baylor, maybe. Although, they have been going FCS early to get an extra home game (something some of us have preached for years). We know Louisiana Tech thinks very highly of themselves...and, for no apparent good reason. So, where are we left if we want old rivals in the future? Slim pickings. With two away games already in the books from 2013 to 2018, we really have to room for back-to-back year home-and-homes to offer any of them. Happy to revive SMU and Tulsa, and should probably just leave it at that...although, I'd love to hammer Texas State once they jump up to FBS! This post has been promoted to an article

  43. Oh, goodness, say it isn't so! E-gads, you mean PETA is "less than what it appears"??? This is pretty typical of the far left and far right wings of most issues. They yell, scream and cause lots of press to follow their every move (ie: Green Peace, PETA, etc.) yet when the bright lights of real inspection fall upon them they are often exposed for what they are...fringe groups just trying to push an agenda...with the agenda being the most important thing....that and preserving their own organization and egos. PETA it seems doesn't actually care as much about "animals" as it does moving it's press loving and radical agenda forward. It's the thought that counts, right? Not those "pesky animals" that get in the way of their own self-righteousness. Say it isn't so!
