  3. I have not seen many quotes about McCarney being anything but a great hire, that is far from proclaiming him a savior of anything. We should all be exciting about the hire when you compare his qualifications with any other football hc, NT has employed in the last three decades. Your comments about only an average football record are a bit odd, being NT has not hired a coach with any hc record since the regrettable Tyler. Actually, McCarney had what has been proved a very good record when you look at both the past and current history of Iowa State. Oddly, however he has not got near the positive response that Dodge got. IMO any new coach is always a cause for optimism and the fan base should be excited. I think the majority lauded the Dodge hire but knew there was a big risk involved. McCarney is certainly not guaranteed to be anything, but his background and the staff he was able to assembly make the odds a lot shorter than they have been in a very long time at NT.

  4. This really shows how pathetic our alumni and Denton support is. Not even 3,000 season tickets sold when we have over 90,000 alumni in DFW and we play in a city with a population around 115,000. I don't know if the AD has a staff dedicated to ticket sales, but if they do they need to be fired and if they don't we need a sales staff.

  5. Dodge was not close to being ready to coach at the fb level. He did a dis-service to himself and NT for taking a job he had no business having. I do appreciate the off the field things he accomplished, but frankly there are very few that would not have been a great improvement over Dickey. I do believe that Dodge will be a good college coach but I really don't see him anytime soon as a head coach at the fb level. The hiring of Dodge was a "hail Mary" that miserably failed, hopefully those kinds of hires are a thing of the past.

  7. Thanks to CajunT for posting this on the Sun Belt board: Looking at the list, especially the popularity of college baseball in Texas, and including the very respectable attendance figures from smaller Sun Belt schools, indicates that baseball may very well be a financially viable program at North Texas.

  8. If we're going to judge the previous two regimes on class or character let's keep in mind the fact that 10 to 12 of Dickeys' players just returned in the blistering heat to participate and pay tribute to one of their fallen brothers. 8 years later, without any attention drawn to it through media hype ect. And many have been doing it for years and many have pledged to continue. To me this is as solid of a representation of character that anyone here could ever ask of their team And regardless if anyone wants to give him credit for it or not, they had this quality of character they showed last week at the GMG.comm bowl instilled in them from their coach. 9. Agree. And I would like to add that it probably wasn't Todd Dodge who sought the NT job. I suspect he was approached and courted. It was the people that sought him out and allowed him to bring all his HS coaching cronies with him that I mostly blame for the Dodge/NT debacle. Things would have been much different if only one thing had happened after Dodge was hired....retaining the DC and all his staff.

  10. We should be excited about what LOOKS like a great coaching staff. Much more experienced than any staff I can remember. That said, looking great and being great are 2 different things. We should be excited and supportive, but let's save the cannonization of this staff for a point in time that is after some time of accomplishment. I'm sure the staff wouldn't have it any other way. I'm happy with all the coaching hires on the staff, but not winning will change that. Quickly. As it should. Dont tell me, show me

  12. Just a few ideas, possibly bordering on absurd, so don't go saying that I am suggesting anything or pushing for something. Is Track & Field necessary for conference memberships? SMU cut theirs prior to joining CUSA. Other than at a few select top national programs, do any spectators at all pay to watch Track & Field? If the answer is no for these questions , which it is for both, then why not eventually cancel the program for something that the university community has an interest in supporting? Like Octopus Inc in the movie Fierce Creatures, stop running some kind of humanitarian mission and get rid of everything that the people will not pay to see. Use those scholarships for baseball, hockey, mens soccer and any other sport that fans (other than Mom, Dad & their little Suzy Rottencrotch) will want to support. A large budget scholarship sport doesn't really have a purpose if nobody has an interest in watching it. Nonessential non-spectator sports should compete only on the club level. Keep mens golf because of the team history and tennis because the investment in facilities has already been made, but evaluate the worth of every other program. OK, please tell me how I'm wrong. Fire away........

  13. So your saying the government has given a 5 star rating to it's own product? Shocking. If people want to spend their money on this product, more power to them. Personally, I'm out.

  14. I've always resented the fact that visiting fans (football and basketball) can walk up to the ticket window 30 prior to kick/tip and get tickets in the same area Mean Green season ticket holders sit. I know the goal is to sell every ticket possible, but I'd sure to explore the notion of only selling general admission tickets on game day. Force people to either buy season tickets or sit in the end zone or with the visiting fans.

  17. This is an area where I wish RV had stepped in and tried to talk TD out of bringing so many H.S. coaches with him (maybe he did and I’m not aware of it). I really think if Dodge had surrounded himself with experienced college coaches, especially at OC and DC, things would have been much different.

  19. Too bad that Todd Dodge didn't go from HC at Southlake, then take an assistants job at Pitt for three years, then the job at North Texas. I don't think we would be in the mess we got ourselves into the last 3-1/2 years win/loss wise. Those bad years really hurt this program. However, our outcome is better now that McCarney is here.

  20. Agreed. Even with the injuries, we finally got over the FAU hump...and on the road, no less...beat bowl qualifier MTSU - also on the road - and came within a point of Lousiana and five of Arkansas State. Either one - the Louisiana game or Arkansas State game - going the other way, and we'd have been 4-4 in conference. Blocked extra point after a valiant comeback at the end of the Louisiana game.... Couldn't finish off second half drives in the ASU game - three second half field goals - with fourth string QB Chase Bain leading the way... Could never quite catch up to Troy in 41-35 loss. Matched them TD for TD, but FGs early in the second and third quarter for them was the difference. We were toe-to-toe all game long with the Sun Belt Co-Champs with our ragged, beaten group in November. Almost got over on Kansas State as well. Tough game...again ending with Baine at QB in the fourth. There's some fight in those guys on our roster. Hopefully, this coaching staff takes what remains of them and shapes them from a group that "gets close" into a group that "knows how to close." I'm betting it can be done.

  21. Look at our last APR report to see Dodge's contribution to the program. We aren't losing scholarships now.

  22. I agree that he left the program better in a lot of ways. And, without more injuries than any program could survive, I think he had a chance at a winning season last year. However, the only place he ever won on a consistent basis was a Southlake. Easy to do with better players and facilities than everyone else. It is probably best for us that he didn't win last year. He is a good guy and I wish him well, but he was never going to take us to the level that McCarney will. I'm glad he landed on his feet and I wish him all the success that Jerry Moore has found.... somewhere else.

  24. Again, some photos taken by a MG-loving shutterbug. He thought more people might get an opportunity to see them if I posted them in the football forum--admins, of course feel free to move if necessary. He didn't want to post them himself, but here they are (with his comments). "These three pictures are taken from east of the stadium…..Long ways from the stadium but nice shady tailgating…." "My wife wants to tailgate under these trees……" "These were taken from the AC parking lot……" "The stadium just looks so clean and sharp….."

  25. We are in good standing with Title IX and baseball only allows something like 13 scholarships so it wouldn't tilt the balance very much. As to SMU, I believe that SMU gave up baseball primarily because they needed the room that the stadium occupied for other purposes. That, and to make them closer to Title IX compliance.

  34. Some folks need to visit reality. The GOP lost and for good reason. 1. The national debt doubled during the last eight years which increased prices we pay for imported goods (includes oil and petroleum products.. includes plastic, chemical products, etc. ) ... The debt increased about 2% per years under Clinton..which was less than the interest rate on the debt. 2. The budget was balanced in 2000 and there was even a surplus and had been for the final six years under Clinton.. Every Bush budget had a large deficit. 3. Bush got us into a war based on the idea that Iraq had WMD and we were at risk despite the fact no terrorist act against us or Europe involved the Iraq government or even Iraq citizens. Sixteen of the nineteen involved in 9-11 were Saudi citizens.... as is Ben Laden... who is still on the loose. None had any Iraq connection. 4. The American economy is a total wreck and all these problems existed prior to the election last November. Most of these problems are due to the party in power removing financial controls on Wall Street and Banking. --They constantly yelled less government interference and they we got it --- and now we have bad economic times due to a meltdown of banking and Wall street companies. (thanks a lot to legislation written by Phil Gramm who also was somewhat involved in the Enron mess as well... that is why he he did not run for re-election for Senator from Texas In 2002). _________________ Obama is not at all responsible for our present mess... grow up and be honest about it. Clinton is not my favorite person and rather disgusting but our economic situation was in good shape when he left office... not true of Bush. Question; If you needed a lifesaving surgery, would you want great surgeon that was known to run around on his wife or a very religious surgeon that incompetant and many of his patients die? The same applies who the person in the White House.

  35. --Until he screws up royally as Bush did in Iraq and the economy ...we should support his efforts or at least hope he gets good advice from both parties and not have one just sitting on their hands and criticizing with no decent ideas. They are elected to serve America, not a political party. ---The situation when Obama took office is horrible....unlike when Bush entered office. We are at War in Iraq, the economy is in the tank, the budget is a total mess, and the national debt has doubled in the past 8 years. When Bush took over we weren't at war (I agreed with Afganistan, we had to go there..he did a good job on that until Iraq), the economy was good except the dot-Com area which happened because about everyone by had then good computers and sales were dropping..remember Greenspans comment that warned about how irrational it was), the budget had a surplus and the arguement was "what to do with it?", and the national debt was stable (less than 2% climb per year from 1992-2000 and could have been decreased due to surplus if Congress had authorized it... (remember, surplus existed). ---All of these problems happened on Bush's term in office... How can you defend him unless your head is in the sand.?? That is completely irrational. We need this President and every President to succeed... and I don't care which party. He will make mistakes, all have... but overall he needs to do better than the last one for sure.... that should not very difficult. --To classify all Democrats as crazy liberals is as inaccurate as saying all Republicans are all super Rich Christian fanatics... neither is true. A few extremeists seem to think no taxes is the answer... but I guess they support no paved roads, public schools, military, public hospitals etc. I realize not all GOP people think that way but some try to paint them that way. Don't buy into every you hear on radio (or TV) by these guys making a fortune just saying anything to keep them on the air and making themselves lots of money. Think for yourself.... an NT degree does mean you know BS when you hear it... doesn't it.

  36. #3 is so wrong... You are taxed on the gains** (EARNED as you called in) .. Obviously you are not one of the super rich that has been getting all the breaks either that are you have royally screwing yourself on your income tax. ----------Think what you just said---- You could buy stocks one day and sell it the next for exactly the same amount and you would owe a lot of taxes... that is crazy. #2 is sort of a stretch.. What is left of income after expenses and taxes is the earnings which might become dividends or may be just kept by the company for expansion, debt payment, or what ever reason they want to use it for. . ** that is why they are called capital gains I certainly hope you don't have a degree in business..if so NT should refund some of your money.

  37. ---Maybe not... but he did not create this mess, removing controls and regulations on Wall Street and Banking did... and he did not do that either. --- Your comments sort of seems like blaming the doctor for a guy's death after a serious accident... Gramm because those first came from the Senate. . Doubt me? -- start reading this and other sourses.... McCain "fired" him from his campaign after all this came out. 43. A couple of things to comment on; A few have said Todd Dodge should have been a college assistant before becoming a head coach at North Texas, well he was and he had that position at North Texas as a quarterbacks coach so he already had college coaching experience that you are saying he should have gotten before becoming a head coach. Second, if I remember correctly just about everyone was applauding the hire of Todd Dodge just as you all are about Dan McCarney. Maybe we all need to see results before we start jumping on the bandwagon of a new coach. Always support North Texas, but you do not have to claim every new coach we get is the savior of the program until they produce results. Lets see what McCarney can do here before we talk about how great he is. After all, his head coaching record isn't miraculous, it's just an average record that hasn't landed him a head coaching position anywhere else besides here. I wish him the best of luck, but I am also realistic.

  44. We were like one player away from APR sanctions again. Our football score was below average...10th percentile for all football schools in both FBS and FCS. There is a way that they are both right... ...if it was bad when Dickey left, then... ...our barely missing sanctions again this year is evidence of digging out of the hole... ...and, McCarney is honest enough to tell us how deep the hole was. Dickey didn't have to deal with APR, so I don't know what to think about any of that time period. I also think it's harsh to penalize teams if guys transfers or quit. How can you read a kid's mind when he signs up? Not really 100% on board with the way they do APR, but am glad that coaches are at least paying attention to it.
