  1. I understand why we have no friends. The best way to have a friend is to be one. Many on this board could care less about anyone else. We have a long history with Texas State and could use a friendly rival within the state. An instate rival would reduce travel costs and increase attendance. I know that if the situation were reversed I'd sure appreciate the help for North Texas. UTSA is another matter. They have no history in football and little history in the other sports. North Texas had been playing football for nearly forty years before we were able to move up to what is now the equivalent of the FBS (then called major college). I have no animosity towards them but they have not paid their dues so to speak. Maybe, if we are fortunate enough to upgrade to a higher conference then they will be allowed to take our place.

  2. I wish Texas State all the best. But UTSA is a different story. When UTSA alumni have insinuated time and again that that they are too good for the Belt, and their program is guaranteed to blow by UNT in a few years, I don't have as much sympathy as I otherwise might.

  3. Traveling to San Marcos every other year for a conference game used to be pretty nice in our SLC days. TxSt would be very beneficial to us in many ways. They have a solid new stadium, great location near a major market, and have countless thousands of alumni in the DFW that would help fill our stadium every two years. And with Fran as their coach there is no telling what they will be capable of. I think the Belt is missing out. Rick

  5. No. It's not. If this is going to be our long term home (which I hope it isn't, but there isn't exactly any other conferences, besides an almost defunct WAC, beating down our door) we don't need to be the steppnig stone conference. Let the Mac or the WAC hold that title. I know we have history with TSU, but I'm not willing to sacrafice the long-term well being of the conference just to have a fun road trip. Let them prove themselves in the WAC and then we can give them an invitation after about 5 years.

  6. Bob Bradley must go. This team has underperformed for to long. Look at how our team comes out to play every first half. The blame lies directly in the lap of the coach.

  9. THIS. X 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000!! What I want badly for UNT is to do one of two things. Upgrade the conference affiliation. If we can get into the MWC or CUSA, then great. I have no doubt CUSA will not be an option anytime soon as long as the private schools are in it together, so that leaves the MWC, which is a better league anyway. I would love to see us play Boise State and Fresno State at the new stadium, not to mention a road trip to the Air Force Academy or to watch our hoops team play New Mexico at the Pit in Albuquerque. I think the MWC would be a good fit for us, but that we would be a good fit for them, too, just like TCU was. If we can't upgrade to a better conference, than make the SBC the best it can be for us. Texas State would give us a rival that we have played more than anyone, has a lot of alumni who can help fill the new stadium when we play, and we would get a nice market for the SBC to become a part of in Austin/San Antonio. If I were Wright Waters, I would be calling Texas State and New Mexico State right now to come aboard and get us to 12 members. If anyone else ever leaves, then you can look into adding La Tech or UTSA--otherwise, those two ingrates can die on the vine as far as I care, although I still think UTSA has way more potential than the rest of the possibilities out there.

  12. He'd be a nice get. Big receiver, 4-star talent out of high school. Problem: He's already used his redshirt year. Is he willing to sit out another? Usually, these guys transfer for more playing time, not more sitting time. Texas had quite a logjam of young WRs - kind of like OU did when Tyler Stradford came our way. My guess is, also, that these things have to do with relationships. Our current staff has years of ties with Texas high school coaches from recruiting for Big 12 schools (McCarney, Bowen, Riddle, Grant, Nelson). You wonder if his coach would put him in touch with us. I think if we even have a semi-successful season (5 or 6 wins), coaches will begin to trust sending their kids here. The vibe here is beginning to be really good. And, with McCarney and crew really offering talent that is "beyond us," they are setting the stage to get some of these type of transfers later on down the line. http://www.texassports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/timmons_gregory00.html

  13. MLS is a joke, at best, the 6th best place to play soccer and develop talent in the world, behind England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany...figure in The Netherlands, Brazil, Portugal and the Scandinavian nations and that 6th best may be very generous. Dempsey was a nice part until he went international...now he's gained form and more importantly confidence buy finding success in the Premiership. Donovan struggled in Germany, but was good in his short tour in the Premiership...had he the ambition to stay with the refining his craft he'd be the greatest American footballer ever...he chose personal happiness instead, and I'd be the last to fault him, but it hasn't made him any better on the pitch. Howard has improved significantly with his time in England. I'm not saying sitting in Europe is better than playing stateside. I am saying being given an opportunity internationally...and then more importantly making the most of it, like Dempsey...is better for one's game than playing MLS. Take Michael Bradley...on loan from Germany with Aston Villa in the Premiership, but only earned 3 starts...the Premiership is better than the Bundesliga, but if he can't find regular starts in England, I'd much prefer he find time elsewhere...but to say staying with Real Salt Lake is better than competing at Aston Villa is ridiculous. If Villa won't play him...yes, move on...but making it internationally can improve one's game significantly, and the kids I mentioned need to find a way to at least try to carve PT in Englad or Spain or Germany. Yes they need to play...but it isnt coincidence the top players (save Donovan) play overseas

  14. The Alumni Pavilion will be a great spot to meet and greet before the games. It is rumored to be opening three (3) hours before game time, and should turn into a great pre-game meet up and party spot. It is not meant to replace tailgating in the more traditional way, just to augment the game day experience for members of the UNT Alumni Association and their guests. Should be great...hope to see you there before the games. I think all the tailgating issues will sort themselves out given a bit of time with the new stadium and all the learning curves that will take place both by the administration and the fans. We do need to relaize that not everythuing will be 100% come day one on Sept. 10th. Everyone may want to take a bit of a step back, take a deep breath and not be overly quick to criticize or praise until the opening "bugs" are worked out. Everyone will learn from each game day experience and soon all will be "normal" come game days for the Mean Green nation. Until then, try to relax, try to enjoy the fact that the Mean Green have a great new stadium and have a great time with a brand new game day experience or two or three. Heck, since 1966 I have been going to Fouts for games and certainly "know" my way around with game day routines. ALL that changes on September 10th. It will be new for everyone. Try to relax and enjoy the experience...it's all new! GO MEAN GREEN! GO MEAN GREEN!

  16. Uhh, you don't seem to be very good with examples or analogies. Either that, or you didn't read the story completely. If I was shilling for the environmentalist and/or the Obama administration, I would be saying (Punditing?) that Oil is a total failure as a viable fuel for mass transportation...without providing any competent information to back my statement....much like the pundits who are probably shilling for the oil company.....and they had no earthly idea what they were talking about. Business 101 Mark, who benefits the most if the Volt fails? 90, I don't need to shill for Ed Wallace. He gets paid the same if 1000 people read his op-ed or 1 million.

  17. I really would like to buy a spot. The way TCU does it, is you have to tailgate in your spot. You can't block the aisles/driveway. So if you want your car next to your tent, you need to buy 2 spaces and a tent that will fit in your spot. I really don't mind this setup, as I think our tailgate crew would probably buy an extra 1 or 2 spots and people could drive away and come back whenever they want. The other way to make it work would be to stripe a few lots extra-wide and charge more for those spots. It just won't work unless you did it that way. The downside: There would be even more parking attendants and even more people with problems with them, because they would have to enforce rules that other big time football schools enforce. Something that us North Texas fans are not familiar with. It's a no win. Honestly, we might find that it isn't an issue at all with all of the space, etc. I want what you're talking about and what I've detailed above, but I really think we ought to give it a season.

  19. Also, that was the sorriest, one-sided coverage of a championship I believe I have ever watched? They couldn't jack LeBrick and his posse off enough. After watching all 6 games I feel like I could write a damn term paper on the entire Miami team. After the pushing altercation the announcers couldn't talk enough about what suspension was bound to happen because there surely would be a game 7, even right up to the very end. With 4 minutes to go and down by 8 or 10, they come back from a timeout and show us one more time that stupid Wade, LeBron and Bosh smok-filled runway suck fest. I was thinking, "WTF, they're down by 10, who gives a shit?" It was sickening. At least Magic got it right when he said afterwards, "3 individuals just got beat by a team". Rick

  20. Wow. So much misinformation here, I don't know where to begin. I'll just wait for your excuses as both inflation and interest rates continue their inevitable climb due in large part to Pres. Obama's policies. As to 7, 6, 5, 4 above: PROVE IT. And I thought the oil prices were high under Bush because he just wanted his oil buddies to get rich. Looks like Pres. Obama has the same friends, no?

  25. To be honest, that whole thread is about as douchebaggy as any thread here when talk of UT San Antonio joining the Sun Belt arises. You simply can't blame any outsiders for their current views of UNT football as it has proven absolutely awful over the past several years. Win a few games, and you'll see those douche bag attitudes on other boards change. As for the winged endzone, should I go look up the old threads here about how much people hated the idea? Of course, now that it's built and it's "ours," it's innovative and unique. When I drive by it, I do think it looks interesting. I don't think it translates well in construction photos. Bottom line: Those guys are gonna talk the talk until UNT football can walk the walk and start winning some games against them. Step 1: Win Sun Belt games Step 2: Win an OOC game or two Step 3: ???? Step 4: Profit

  28. Even a bottom rung ACC is going to substantially pay more. I am still amazed after the disappointing year NT had, that there was much interest. If the team had the year they should have based on the returning players than JJ would have surely got some better offers. I assume that JJ is in demand or he would have never got the big raise after a new contract the year before. If the team continues to excel, he will get those premium offers. It is going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Support at NT leaves a lot to be desired but at the same time there is not a lot of pressure compared to higher profile conference teams. With a seven year contract apparently around half a mil, JJ is certainly in the driver's seat. He can afford to wait around for that great offer. I personally would like to keep JJ but I would gladly accept losing him if it means that NT has substantially bettered their basketball program.

  29. Thank you You couldn't be more accurate with this post in explaining another area in which we are leaving money on the table. And I nearly fell over when I read this... "(Most of you may not know that UNT was called the Mean Green long before Joe Greene attended school there. Once he got to the NFL his teammates/reporters started to call him Mean Joe Greene, combining his alma mater's name and his convenient last name, to create a memorable nickname.)." 30. ---Wow... The Constitution argument... ...No we are not required to give the Iraq detainees Constitutional rights... BUT ... if we re trying to create a Democratic government there then we should at least get close to some of what it claims to stand for. If not... they absolutely will not "buy into" it. ---The real problem now is we have held so many of them so long (even some those already released) that they will be serious risks we we now turn them loose. On the flip side it is terrible to detain them as well if they haven't done anything and some of them hadn't/hasn't. The big problem and mistake has already happened**... We kept them too long without any investigation or proof that they were a problem.. NOW THEY ARE...( a big one) We now have a catch-22 problem... no good answer exists. **Don't blame the new administration. PS: no one from Iraq was involved in 9-11.... 16 of the 19 were from Saudi Arabia (our Mideast buddies?).
    1 point
  31. ---Exactly.... that is also what Saddam did ..... but the difference is he just killed them anyway often just for who they knew. ... Detaining them by us is not a problem, our police and system does it all the time... but it should not take six years to investigate and discover that he likely is not guilty of anything......That is why he was eventually released.... That is the ENTIRE point..... the time taken... not that they were "captured". ---The problem now the remaining ones could be even worse if turned loose.... and no doubt some are very awful people and should be kept. Some may have not been bad guys but after six years of prison.. they want revenge and are terrible now. We (Bush administration) may have created these terrorists... besides their family who are not locked up may now be terrorists because of what has happened to a family member. There is no good answer to these guys now.....
    1 point
  32. --You are absolutely right..... and one could say that the Bush administration might have created this terrorist by keeping him in prison for years perhaps for doing nothing. ---If we are going to export democracy to the rest of the world then our principles should go with it ... six years is not a speedy trial. How hard was it to discover that he actually had a carpet store in Saudi Arabia?? We may have created this monster.
    1 point
  33. ---That is my concern too. However the past administration may have created this monster. If someone had gotten me and taken me to some isolated island and kept me for six years (especially if I had done nothing to deserve it) I might come out with a desire for revenge and be a terrorist against an army that was in my country. ---Two ways to spin this one. . Besides it was not Obama that released him ... He was released in 2007 by the "other group". Hope we haven't jumped the gun a bit early on this deal at Gitmo.

Phil Gramm (husband) then pulled out of his re-election race and they left the state. ---As for the Volt or electric cars.... they may work ok if a person only drives short distances and lives in a large city...terrible if you need to drive long distances...or live in sparse area... can't recharge quickly.... also remember there are environmental electric generation concerns as well..... My last concern... they have batteries.. how long do they last and what happens to them when they get old. Looks like that is trading one problem for a bunch more.

  37. My suggestion to the athletic administration -rv- was to number all the spots near the green belt for tailgating & then sell the rights for the season to the same spots for us EX's. RV & the nt police dept were against it for the same thinking that we have used in the past to hire HS football coaches & other bad decisions. Are u ready for this. The police & rv do not want ex's backing into these spaces and HOUR AND A HALF PRIOR TO THE GAME to tailgate while people are arriving through that lot just prior to the KO> That's straight from the dept. I need your help. If you like the idea, we need to explain to the dept that at that time we are probably breaking it down to go into the stadium.Tailgating happens for several hours prior to that time most of us know. For us my thought is that Ex's get together & pool their money & get spaces close to the stadium next to the green belt for all of our convience like we had at ff. Evidently they don't need our help in making it easy for us to be together prior to the game! Thoughts..........

  43. If we start off next year with a new coach, we are going to have a miserable time. It takes 3 years for a new coach to get off the ground. It will be horrible for recruiting to change right now. I actually saw progress last night, and I think we are going to win more games in the Belt than we lose. I say you stay with Dodge another year to see what happens with the new stadium and recruiting. Who knows Texas high school football better than TD? No one.

  46. Hay Silver, I used to bring all my stuff to tailgate and to party several hrs prior to the game, my thinking was to get some of us together to get a place to meet every Sat so we would know where to meet for those driving into town (ie. that's why I gave good money to buy that BBQ pit). Like anyone, I like to have homes away from homes ( ie. I bring things to the tailgate from far away places like San Antonio)[like I've counted the # of spaces needed for the club&boxes and there will be much less parking than you think that hasn't been addressed by the A Adm. So your right, I never should gotten into this since it really doesn't affect me. Secondly what the heck is the matter with the ath dept getting some more money while giving us some continuity in our Saturday afternoon's- the thing that is really obvious is most of you don't get it ( & never will- Think obama)I did it for you guys. I was wrong. I can buy a space but don't need it since we'll be in the club 2 hrs prior to the game. Game changed guys! BUT I'd rather be BSing with u guys, so see ya in the club or back at Fout's field after the game tailgating. God bless silver
