So today's DRC Blog Entry discuses college football's newest award: the Pony Express Award. It is advertised as "The award will be given out once a year to a set of two of three teammates a panel picks as the best in college football." I woud like to turn this into an off-season game: In real honor of the original Pony Express, use this thread to nominate those two or three teammates who have thoroughly abused the rules of college football (in particular those rules regarding gifts and payments to student athletes). I will go first: Terrelle Pryor and Daniel Herron; for accepting tattoos in exchange for signed jerseys. This tandem has gone above and beyond in their effort to disgrace their unuiversity; so much so that their got an early retirement oppurtunity.5 points

Also, that was the sorriest, one-sided coverage of a championship I believe I have ever watched? They couldn't jack LeBrick and his posse off enough. After watching all 6 games I feel like I could write a damn term paper on the entire Miami team. After the pushing altercation the announcers couldn't talk enough about what suspension was bound to happen because there surely would be a game 7, even right up to the very end. With 4 minutes to go and down by 8 or 10, they come back from a timeout and show us one more time that stupid Wade, LeBron and Bosh smok-filled runway suck fest. I was thinking, "WTF, they're down by 10, who gives a shit?" It was sickening. At least Magic got it right when he said afterwards, "3 individuals just got beat by a team". Rick2 points

Wow. So much misinformation here, I don't know where to begin. I'll just wait for your excuses as both inflation and interest rates continue their inevitable climb due in large part to Pres. Obama's policies. As to 7, 6, 5, 4 above: PROVE IT. And I thought the oil prices were high under Bush because he just wanted his oil buddies to get rich. Looks like Pres. Obama has the same friends, no?2 points

I hate to interrupt your Obama bashing party but thought I would inject a few rational counterpoints. 1. We will only default if we do not raise the debt ceiling just like we would have defaulted if we did not raise the debt ceiling each of the last ten years. 2. Yes we still have to much debt but again I say we have raised the debt ceiling each of the last ten years. Where was your anger then? 3. Yes gas prices are too high but for the sake of accurate reporting they were higher under Bush only to be brought down by the great recession. Whats more is that if you factor in all energy prices and not just gasoline, prices are still much lower than their peak under Bush. 4. Growing third world economies are driving this bus. 5. See #4 growing third world economies drive up the prices of commodities thus driving up the price of consumer goods. 6. It sucks but without putting too much lipstick on this pig let me point out a stat of interest. Unemployment among college grads is 4.5% and even lower for those with more than a bachelors. Good quality blue collar jobs in this country have been lost to cheaper labor in places like china and India. That is not a recent phenomenon and those jobs are not coming back nor should they. The new American economy is evolving to what is titled a Knowledge Economy. What I find troublesome is that far too many Americans seem to have not got the memo as we have too few Americans with college degrees and even fewer still with specialized degrees. 7. Utility prices were higher under Bush2 points

For those who were there saw first hand the Hall to Quinn connection at Fouts for the very last time. I knew it wasn't going to be fair, but damn it was fun to see those guys go at it one more time. Thank you to Kram1 and his bride for putting on a first class event. I hope we raised the bar this year in fund raising, and from the crowd that showed, we may have done just that. Thank you to the Hiatt's for cooking some great barbecue. Thank you to the refs, Texas Stranger and UNTFlyer, for giving up one of their days to help keep us all in line. Thank you to the GMG.com board players for having the nerve to get out there in the heat and mix it up with ex college and pro's on the same field. We have some great athletes on this board for sure. Thank you to RV for the stadium tour afterwards. Hearing our voices bounce off the student section from our seats on the home side just blew me away? This is going to be one of the best places in the state of Texas to watch a football game. And thank you to all the great players who participated and gave us one more memory to take away for a lifetime today. We owe you guys for the great times, the great memories, and mostly, for the beautiful new stadium across the road. If it were not for you, Andy Blount, Weston Thaggard, Scott Hall, Johnny "The Mighty" Quinn, Montey Stevenson, Luke Condor, Cody Spencer and of course Andrew Smith and all the rest, if it were not for you we wouldn't have it in the first place. Im certain of that. Thank you so much again to everyone involved. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again soon. It's All Green and All Good! Rick This post has been promoted to an article1 point

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43269525/ns/business-going_green/ The EPA states, "....would cost (coal) industry nearly $11 BILLION "A YEAR" in estimated compliance expenditures." You know if these are government figures the actual figues will be much higher. This is JUST part of the new forced costs that the EPA is getting ready to place on coal companies.......there will be regulations for lead, arsenic and acid gases that have not yet been released that will cost the coal companies additional monies. Who will pay for this moderization? *****Some coal fired plants will be forces to shut down....loss of jobs. *****Others will be forced to pass the HIGHER utility costs to the consumer in "much higher utility costs." This administration has brought us: *****to the point of our government defaulting on "interest payments." *****over $14 Trillion debt ceiling. *****high gas prices. *****escalating food prices. *****escalating consumer goods. *****depression like unemployment. *****and now the begining of higher utility costs. _____________________________ The place for Non-UNT sports, politics, and general discussion and debate. Not a place for the timid or shy. _____________________________ can some of you liberals intelligently defend these policies of this administration?1 point

I am really excited to be able to announce that through the generous support of those who participated, donated and helped stage the 8th annual GMG.COM Bowl, that we were able to raise some $2225.00 for the Andrew Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund!!!!! Our goal was to raise at least $1500 and I would say we well surpassed that goal. The above totals do assume that I collect from those who had the winning bids for the silent auction merchandise. I will be getting in touch with all the winners in the very near future. Thanks to out shirt sponsor Brian Futrell (unt88) and The Billiard factory in Lewisville for their generous support, to those who provided silent auction materials, to all those who bid on the silent auction merchandise, to all our players and donors (we had people donate who were could not play or attend), to Smitty for the great shirt design and to Harry and GMG.Com. Thanks also to the families and friends who braved the heat to come out and watch...and how about that great BBQ and those super tailgate beans? Thanks to the Hiatt's for the great BBQ and to msgreengoblin for the great tailgate beans! There were several players who gave more than the $25 player fee to help provide additional funds as well. I also need to thank the Athletic Dept. folks who helped us secure Fouts, had the gates unlocked, the power on and tables and chairs ready Saturday morning, for the give-a-way cups, pom poms and mini-volleyballs for the kids and to Rick V. for not only coming by the game but in having the new stadium open for all who wished to have an "up close and personal" look. Let me see if I can recall all the ex-players attending: Scott Hall Andy Blount Johnny Quinn Brian Futrell Jason Ball Weston Thaggard Cody Spencer Pierce Reid Jared Vaughn Montey Kennerson-Stevenson Luke Condor Justin Claiborne OK, I know I am missing one or two...someone help me out here. Hopefully, we will have even more return next year when the word gets out. Anyone else notice current Mean Green QB Derek Thompson on the sidelines? A special thanks to the ladies who braved the heat and the testosterone to play...Crooked I Formation, Lindsey, and mrsgreengoblin. All I can say is that it was definitely a GREAT day to be part of the Mean Green nation. I hope to see everyone (and more) back next year for the GoMeanGreenBowl 9!1 point

Hay Silver, I used to bring all my stuff to tailgate and to party several hrs prior to the game, my thinking was to get some of us together to get a place to meet every Sat so we would know where to meet for those driving into town (ie. that's why I gave good money to buy that BBQ pit). Like anyone, I like to have homes away from homes ( ie. I bring things to the tailgate from far away places like San Antonio)[like I've counted the # of spaces needed for the club&boxes and there will be much less parking than you think that hasn't been addressed by the A Adm. So your right, I never should gotten into this since it really doesn't affect me. Secondly what the heck is the matter with the ath dept getting some more money while giving us some continuity in our Saturday afternoon's- the thing that is really obvious is most of you don't get it ( & never will- Think obama)I did it for you guys. I was wrong. I can buy a space but don't need it since we'll be in the club 2 hrs prior to the game. Game changed guys! BUT I'd rather be BSing with u guys, so see ya in the club or back at Fout's field after the game tailgating. God bless silver1 point

I'm scheduled to go select my season tickets next week. When the girl called me I meant to ask if they let us go out an pick our seats at the stadium while we are there and actually see where we would be sitting. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. I was driving and trying to pull over to talk when she called, so my thoughts weren't on Mean Green Football (althought they should be at all times)at the time. What does the trip to the office consist of?1 point

I was told that by one of our fine officials as well. The fumble bounced out of his arms and landed in the end zone. I did find that ruling a little strange in that usually a safety is scored against you in the end zone you are defending, but who am I to question. Not a big deal, but I can't remember if the extra two points would have helped us against the spread.1 point
-
I think that resulted in a safety and as such the green team shoudl have 15 points. just saying...1 point

You will pick from a chart that has previously chosen seats blocked out. Since we will not have access to the stadium until early July, you will not be able to see from your actual seats. If it's as the other seat selections you will be checked off the list at the front of the AC, make a name tag, go to the anteroom where the press conferences are staged to view the available seats from the chart. When your actual time comes up you will be assigned one of the development staff who will take you to another room to officially record your selection. After your seats are known you can view from the area that you chose through virtual reality. It's a simple and easy process. You should be able to arrange a tour of the stadium in July and possibly change your location. If you can, I'd guess that there is a rather small window of opportunity because I can see that a wholesale changing of seats would create chaos.1 point

In fairness, I don't care that wind turbines kill birds. I only care when the turbines are killing birds around the new stadium. Other than that, put 1,000,000,000,000,000 wind turbines in West Texas, for all I care. Giving the EPA unlimited power is a recipe for disaster (as is giving any governement agency that power). This is what this administration has done and another reason I will be voting for anyone else for President next year (huge surprise, I know).,1 point

If a zero or low value is placed on life, then by all means this is a horrible deal. Pretty funny that republicans (I'm independent for the record) cry wolf when clean-air initiatives such as wind turbines kill birds, but when clean air acts are proposed that would save human life that they are rejected to save corporate profits and jobs. "Cutting ozone pollution using the Clean Air Act will have saved $2 trillion by 2020 and prevented at least 230,000 deaths annually, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in a report. Tougher emission restrictions adopted in 1990 helped avoid more than 160,000 premature deaths, 130,000 heart attacks, 13 million lost work days and 1.7 million asthma attacks last year, according to today'sreport, which measured only the impact of amendments from 1990. By 2020, complying with the amendments would prevent 200,000 heart attacks, 17 million lost work days and 2.4 million asthma attacks, according to the report."1 point

May be a spare part, but his juco numbers were twice as good as last year's one man recruiting class. Not sure how valid your observations are based on a small amount of You Tube. Obviously, not highly sought after being available this late in the recruiting process, but a low post player with any kind of game is apparently the best they can do. I just hope he wants to be a post player and not another big man with visions of three pointers. He did led Lon Morris in rebounding but if you are to believe the stats reported, he only shoot 40% and hoisted up 87 threes only shooting 24%. Not exactly what this team needs.1 point

Well I was certain EVERYONE knew there's no such thing as a three-taloned eagle(like those of us who came to NT prior to the Helwig regime do) and would pick up on the sarcasm. Shows what I know? Rick1 point

Miami actually made the right decision of choosing Larranaga over Jones. He was the better candidate. JJ still has some ways to go to get better offers from a good ACC school. I hope he gets it as that will mean our basketball program is improving and on the right path. And depending on who you talk too, most will believe that being the head coach at Miami is a better gig than being the coach at North Texas AT THE PRESENT TIME.1 point

This isn't close at all, in my opinion. The early 200s teams we had barely drew 2000 for games in conference, with about 700 showing up for games against Panhandle State if we were lucky. This was at the same time that the university's football team won the SBC four years in a row. Our attendance today is wayyyyyyyyyyy better than it was even 5 years ago. Is it anywhere close to where we want it to be? No, but it is getting better. Yes, a win in the NCAA Tournament would be a huge boost, but we are making our way there slowly but surely.0 points

They are just not going to get it, buddy. See #6 above. Regardless of rational thought, some folks will simply just not get it.0 points

HoustonEagle: This administration has raised the debt more than all other president's combined: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/jun/01/sarah-palin/sarah-palin-says-obama-has-accumulated-more-debt-p/ FDR did the same....raised the debt more than all other previous president's combined.....prior to WWII. Thanks Rick for pointing out that Gringo was The Fake. Gringo, I had no idea but enjoyed meeting you and talking to you. This was one fun game...I am very grateful to the pros that came out this year. At 50, I am less sore this year than last...my boss will appreciate that. I learned you don't get sore if you don't play! Mark, your efforts have taken this game to new levels...from game quality to facilities to auction to fundraising, I am so appreciative of your passion, your positivity and your energy. And thanks to KRAM 2 also. Very nice to see RV come over and invite all the participants to tour the stadium. And to Smitty, thanks for capturing the lovely Jasmine in the photos. GMG0 points

If we win a NCAA tournament game i still dont see more students coming to the game to see Ark St, Ull, Fiu.... Winning basketball games isnt going to bring more fans, its all about football in Texas. Once the football program starts winning then youll start seeing basketball games with higher attendance. No matter how many times you can say that weve won 2 SBC championships in the past 4 years, theyll bring it back to football.-1 points
