Hopefully our final scholarshIp will go to Jarred Shaw. An available Big Man at our greatest need. Was considering UNT prior to his senior year. Thanks in advance Roger! http://blog.newsok.c...ase-no-stunner/ Click here to view the article2 points

As I continue to watch the progress of our football stadium, one thing becomes clear to me....it is the nicest small college football stadium in America! I don't mean "small" in a bad way, just not one of the megga stadiums! I always loved SMU's Ford Stadium since it opened. But, HKS and Manhattan Construction have teamed up for another jewel! I get to pick out my seats on Monday, May 9 and I can't wait. Like most of you, September 10th can't get here soon enough! I look forward to seein' everyone and discussing how far we have come. I feel like BIGTIME! I really never thought this day would come! To all the Mean Green Nation.....I look forward to seein' ya soon! ParksAndRecRick P.S. Come to the final Mean Green Caravan Stop in Grand Prairie on May 19! Love to see you at our historic Uptown Theater in Downtown GP. Just a couple miles off Highway 30 and Belt Line!2 points

There are some interesting points in the editorial but by and large I agree with what the university is doing. We do need a PR firm to ballyhoo the University of North Texas as it's never been done before. Is the University of North Texas, in spite of over 325,000 living alumni (nearly half of them in the area) a household name? I've seen posts on this board ad nauseum that we need advertising. Some want billboards, some TV, some radio, some internet, and still others printed media. A good PR firm knows how to best utilize the advertising dollar to get more bang for the buck. If it's effective, it's money well spent. We used to rely almost totally on the state for our existence. That is becoming less and less with each two-year state budget. We need to be more of a household name to be able to attract students and donors. Identifying the four areas was largely rhetoric but necessary to show that this is not only about the stadium. It could payoff in our research goals, rejuvinate our alumni base and attract individual and foundation donors. The stadium naming rights is an easier sell when the university is at the forefront of the area psyche. We couldn't afford to compete with the professional sports teams in the sports niche but we have so much more to offer than one narrow venue. Make no mistake, sports are important but so are other facets of the university's life. A good PR firm will highlight all important contributions of the University of North Texas. So far, I've seen little to complain about under the administration of Lane Rawlins.2 points

Winning is a very important component, but for the umpteenth time, spirit traditions (consistent ones) and game day pageantry are just as important....IMHO more important. Before everyone starts rolling their eyes and saying "there he goes again", let me remind all of you that if winning was, in and of itself, the most important thing, then why do all the "big time" schools put on such a big show....spirit/pageantry wise? Why bother with 350+ monster bands (like UT and A$M) and "yell practice" and the "hook-um Horns" and "guns up" signals etc etc, if winning the game was the ONLY THING. We have got to get back to basics. The stadium will not be enough. It's like I said to a friend one time when we were discussing education. I said that you can build the most fantastic and up-to-date educational facility for a community. But unless the parents and community truly care about education, all you have is a very expensive, and well equipped, publicly funded day care center.2 points

During the Bill Blakely years, we used to bring the Mean Green out onto the floor by cheering "Bring On The Mean Green". Almost all in the Super Pit would get into it and have fun with it. I have no idea why it quit when Blakely left. I dont see why this would not work as a pregame cheer and to cheer the team out after halftime. I know this is not quite what you are talking about but I am also an old fart and live in the past. Forgive me.2 points

True, but I have 100% confidence without a doubt that we can win the sunbelt next year! We really need help down low! Holmen can play with his back to the basket and so can Franklin and Williams, but both of thos guys are just 6' 6". Hogans needs some help under the basket for next year! I do have faith the Edwards will be a much bigger force next year. I just do not know how many minutes he can play. Shaw may be more athletic but I am liking Millers body down in the post. We need to push guys around next year. Especially in the small undersized sunbelt1 point
-
Don't we need a big man now? Would Miller not be a better fit at his size and to our knowledge no medical issues. We wont start the year with T-Mich, there is talk or red shirting Robinson; this leaves us with who to play post? Hogans, Edwards, Holeman. Who else... Franklin? Knox? We need the size now if we are going to get the size1 point

I'd like to see us do the chant portion of our fight song accapella complete with arm signals. I think that would be especially cool at road games. However, it may not "fly" because there may be too many people that don't want to acknowledge that our mascot is still the Eagles, just because we have an awsome nick name in Mean Green.1 point

This is good until someone calls timeout with two seconds left and we're required to hold "mean" for over a minute. We'd have fans dropping like flies.1 point

I remember when when Memphis did their version at the New Orleans Bowl. It was really impressive to hear their ENTIRE side cheer T-I-G-E-R-S TIGERS! On another note. The 2 crowd participation cheers we do well have the help of the 1. cheerleaders or 2. the PA announcer. 1. The NORTH - TEXAS cheer is helped by the signs the cheerleaders hold up. 2 When we get a frst down, the PA announcer says, "That's good for another Mean Green" and we reply "FIRST DOWN" What I'm trying to say is that the crowd needs help and the cheerleaders and/or PA announcer have the tools to provide that help.1 point

Of course, using the video board and the mascot to start a unified chant that has a start and a finish would be ripping off other programs' ideas, so to he'll with it!!! Rick1 point

The fact that there is a division about this within the university - and reflected on this board - is typical of all that is wrong with North Texas/UNT when it comes to the failure to achieve potential over the many years. WHY is it that North Texas/UNT suffers so bad from this division and wavering, holding it back over decades??? Other schools overcome this crap. North Texas/UNT wallows in it eternally. Absence of leadership. Won't someone take the reins of this animal and get it in fighting shape?! These administrators should be ashamed. I hear people down here saying 'UNT' sometimes. That's only because someone gave them that idea; years ago no one would have said 'UNT'. It's a terrible idea that should have been axed by a decent leader. I understand why someone had the idea initially, but if they had sense they would have questioned this baby idea using their own powers of critical thinking (if it existed) and seen that any merits of it are far outweighed by the downsides. What that shows is really weak thinking, inability to go to the second level. Unfortunately that too often has characterized the 'leadership' coming out of the administration building or wherever they have gone now.1 point

"Cheap" is a value proposition. Let's hope that Rawlings is wise enough to pick a firm with a message that intelligently changes the commuter tag and brings the image up several notches.1 point

I really appreciate it. I am looking forward to being a spectator again. I like to think we raised a winner. Her spirit was close to broke, but she's getting the fire back in the spring work-outs. We're bringing her to NY to work out with her trainer for a few weeks. She needs to rub the rust off her ball handle and footwork. Along the same lines, we're also very encouraged by the hires.1 point

It's easily as political as jokes about Ford being clumsy, Clinton being an insatiable poon-hound, George Sr. talking about a thousand points of light or Obama talking in a slow, stilted cadence.1 point

Here is what's needed: 1. Get the exes to give money instead of bad mouthing their alma mater. 2. Be consistent winners in football and basketball. 3. Market the heck out of ball games, concerts, billboards, etc. 4. Pick an image and stick to it...no 'free lancing' every time a new coach or admistrator shows up in Denton. 5. Put the whammy on the Dallas campus to use green in their color scheme. 6. Put away the stupid idea that people across the country know what the hell UNT is.0 points

I met him and James Neal (among others) at the season ticket holder kickoff. They both could not have been nicer and could tell I was just trying to just keep my head down and get a photo, so they made a point of chatting me up for awhile. It was an awesome experience and they both are "my guys" this season, which to be fair, is a role that has been occupied by everyone from Bill Guerin to Nikko Kapanen. Still it was nice to see them both start well (I went to the opener and Neal was a (to quote the guy quoting Corby next to me) a "grown ass man" all night.-1 points

He would be, but Cedric never lazily and poorly discusses college football and decides to call every player - especially Bradford and McCoy - grown ass men because he is too ignorant to think of anything better to say.-1 points

Count me as one who somehow thought the selection process was 'by hand.' Not sure how so many assumed that incorrectly. What exactly is the purpose of taking a half day off work to do a 'virtual selection?' I agree with JD, I was super excited not only about the selection but also the belief that this was going to be an experience like nothing I've done before. Instead, it's going to be the same process as my buying Tellatubbies on Ice tickets via Ticketmaster.-1 points

I am, for your information, shelling out that kind of money (and more) for the school. So, I am mocking no one except those with the chips on their shoulders who want to find something wrong with each and everything this administration does. It gets a little tirining...yawn...to see this stuff over and over again each and every time the department does something. How long ago was this process announced and how many times has it been explained? And now you come on and complain about the process. You know, they have these magic things called phones...even have little portable ones they call cell phones that don't have long distance charges....one could have called almost anytime if they were confused about the process or wanted more info on how exactly the process will work on selection day (OK, I'll give you the sarcasm thing on that sentence). To post there was "direct misleading" on the seat selection process is rather telling. What, might one ask, did you see as "directly misleading?" I would love to know what you felt was misleading as I have not experienced any of that so far. Maybe it's just because I pay really really close attention to things and ask a bunch of questions...even by phone, by email and in person, before I shell out the amount of money i am shelling out for seats. I know people who live a distance from Denton who have found it important enough to them that they have made the effort to get to Denton for an actual look-see. Sure not everyone can do that, but that does not mean that the opportunity was not presented. I will not be able to be present to select my seats...bummer, right? Maybe I should post how unfair it was that I have a family commitment that day/time and will have to miss and be hopeful that my proxy will select "correctly" for me". If not, I guess I can come on here and talk about how unfair everything was even though I fully knew the rules going into it. Sixty open seats per section seems like an opportunity to move location if you needed to do so to me...note I said opportunity, not sure thing. Just want to be clear so you don't think I am directly misleading anyone. You ask for an open house day to see the stadium...well, they have had tours available and have announced that for months. Sort of like an open house. Even if they had an open house, for sure it would be on a day when someone couldn't come and then it would be all the AD's fault that he didn't pick a different day. Cold chicken fingers at an athletic event...wow...really? I would imagine that everyone who ever has attended athletic events has experienced the "game day food" deal. No one will be throwing a dart at a board...unless of course the person they are selecting for did no pre-work and just said pick what's there! Ample time to let your proxy know exactly where you want your seats and what you priorities are for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. options. Don't you think that "throwing a dart" comment is a bit over the top and "mocking" in itself? If you think there will be a column in front of them you have done ZERO pre-work...Don't believe there are columns to be in front of anyone at the new stadium...another bit of hyperbole on your part it seems. Want to AD to do things top notch you say...well, how about a new 30,000 plus stadium designed by the same group that designed Cowboy stadium? That "top notch" enough for you? So, let's just stop all construction while groups of people wonder about the stadium unescorted on selection day. Man, OSHA would have a field day with that one I would imagine. Let's not worry about all the hazards and potential lawsuits that little deal would open the University up to. Sorry about those nose bleed NCAA seats...I agree that's a tough deal...any idea ahead of time where the seats would be located? Just asking. And, that shirt thing was definitely a cluster drill from the start to finish. Was that you that had that problem? And, yes, have heard horror stories about the festival parking thing, but I also saw lots and lots of people tailgating in the same spots at each home game. I would be interested in knowing why you had the problem and the others did not. Interesting, very interesting. Having graduated from three different universities, I can assure you that this stuff you mention is not unique to UNT...nor is it the common thing for all UNT fans. I wonder why it happens to the same folks over and over...really, that is pretty interesting. I wonder if it is like "finding what you are looking for". Don't know. Sure, i have had...and still do...my issues with things at UNT. But, have found through the years that it is often what you make of it that determines how the experience really ends. Besides, if folks can complain, why can't I not complain? If you can "mock" why can't I? I know...IT'S NOT FAIR!-1 points

http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/drc/opinion/editorials/stories/DRC_editorial_0507.2f6b10a0c.html Even empty and as yet unused, the new stadium is a logical choice for a campaign of institutional ballyhoo, and we’re all for it. It will be a lot more effective, however, if the university can field a football team that can win a few games in its new digs. This is a rose that can lose its bloom pretty quickly if it gets a reputation as a nicely appointed funeral parlor for the Mean Green and their fans.-1 points
