  1. 2. Dan McCarney, North Texas Career Record: 56-85 It’s not like things got that stale at Iowa State. McCarney had come up with five seven-plus winning campaigns in seven years at a tough place to consistently win, and then he was dumped. After bouncing around as a defensive line coach, he’s getting another shot at North Texas and he might be fantastic. Only 58 when the season starts, there’s still time for him to make the Mean Green shine. Hot Seat Status: None. After the Todd Dodge disaster, McCarney will get at least three years to make everything better. The Coaching Change Will Come … In ten years. At his age, McCarney isn’t going anywhere, but he’s young enough to build up the program and make it his for the next decade. It was an underappreciated hire. 2. If the NCAA would enforce the 15,000 attendance requirement FBS would clear out quite a bit.

  3. I still have about 18 years before I have to make this decision, but I hope my thought process at that time is the same as how I'm thinking now: "Where does she want to go?", then we can hammer out pros & cons. Cost will probably be a huge factor... She'll already know how great UNT is because my wife and I will educate her, but if an elite academic institution comes calling, then that will be up to her to decide upon. Now, if she ever says she wants to go to SMU, I'll have to give her up for adoption.

  4. Keeping this in mind, it's a fair ranking of the coaches. Personally, I'd take Coach Mac over Mario Cristobal. I assume the "underappreciated" refers to the media--they haven't given a whole lot of attention to the hire.

  5. Clearly he's just pandering because he wants this job. It's shameful that he's out there trying to gain brownee points. Do the other candidates get this opportunity? -1's in 5...4...3...2...1...

  7. Tom Grieve was very complementary again this afternoon on his weekly show with BADD radio. They were talking about Knoxy interviewing an old lady (big surprise I know) and Grieve brought up how impressed he was with McCarney's passion and enthusiasm and what not. It was an unprovoked UNT mention and I was very surprised and impressed.

  9. Top 5 basketball states & their top 5 programs TEXAS 1. Texas: Rick Barnes has guided the Longhorns to a school-record 13 consecutive NCAA tournaments. 2. Baylor: The Bears went from the cusp of the “death penalty” to the Elite Eight in less than a decade. Next season’s team should be Scott Drew’s best. 3. Texas A&M: First Billy Gillispie and now Mark Turgeon. Someone in College Station has an eye for coaches. 4. UTEP: Tim Floyd will keep the Miners where they’ve been for years now – near the top of the C-USA standings. 5. Texas Tech: It won’t be long until the Red Raiders are back in the NCAA tournament. Hmmm. #5 is intriguing. Perception is reality? The score says no.

The women's team is doing great too. I'll see if I can get some information on their season too. GO MEAN GREEN!!!

  12. Wow, you talk about the deficit and never once mention spending. Here is an idea (for both parties, by the way), IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, DON'T SPEND IT!!! Seems a lot of people manage to live that way. Pres. Obama was elected because he promised to fix the economy. He hasn't. If there is not a dramatic turnaround in the next year and a half, he will be a one termer. As some famous democrat once said "It's the economy, stupid." Blaming Bush has grown to be a tired excuse and won't be accepted in 2012. As far as the Republican candidate, I think you will see a new face nominated. It won't be any of the people you mentioned above. Pawlenty, Rep. Ryan, Gov. Walker, or Sen. Rubio could be the guy. If not, it will be someone in their mold. Any of the candidates you mentioned could beat Pres. Obama if the economy isn't better, but hopefully the Republicans have learned their lesson (NEVER a given with this spineless group) and go in a different direction. I don't think the voters in the Republican primaries will give them a choice.

  13. Yep, this state began to go red with Reagan and culminated with the legislature following in the 90s. Support for democrats left with the death of the southern conservative democrat. It could be argued that Texas didn't leave the democrat party, but the democrat party left Texas. To say that Texas has been "historically repulican" is just plain wrong. It speaks to how much Pres. Obama knows and/or cares about this state. I don't mean that negatively. Why would he care about a state that he has zero chance of winning in 2012? Maybe he meant to say historically conservative, which would have been correct. Maybe he just misspeaks a lot, like another former president.

  16. I've seen this before. Two well-meaning jokesters realize how fun it is to mock everything and everything about this board. They antogonize like mad and go from being universally hated to somewhat accepted due to their sheer force of will. Long-time readers might even find themselves giving them props they never expected to give at some of the better placed comments. Things are going well. Then...something changes. They start posting all the time and weighing in on everything. Without realizing it, they are the ones driving the same banal conversations they showed up to mock. Next, they meet a poster at a game or find out someone they kind of know is already posting. From there, all bets are off. Firefighters shake their hands and tell them they may not always agree, but they are great fans. They meet some more folks at a tailgate and realize they are good people. Finally, they look down and see a 4 digit post count climbing rapidly and realize - gasp- they've gone native. I'll give you the same advice I tried to give your fathers a little more than two decades ago -- pull out now and slow things down before you get stuck.

  20. I can get over the fact that they got rid of the guy I preferred. Thankfully, they gave me the opportunity several months ago to get that frustration out of my system. However, when getting used to a "new guy", it would be nice if they had a little bit of pbp experience or at a minimum 1 good catch-phrase. At the professional level, there should be a prerequisite that you have a couple hundred college/minor league games under your belt. I don't like being the guy that bashes somebody else for doing a job that I could never do... but they had a lot of experienced options that I know wouldn't get on most peoples nerves. Does anyone else think that moving Dave Barnett from radio to TV would have been a better choice? Obviously, Nadel could never leave his radio post.

  21. How can any regular season be any more meaningless than the NBA (except maybe the NHL's) when just about everyone makes the playoffs? Pro basketball has become a "sport of stars" where the rules of basketball do not apply to certain people. Pro basketball is doing a good bit to ruin the sport of basketball. But, to each his/her own. I guess that's why there are so many different sports. For me, nothing as great as the college game. No way does the pro game (in any sport) compare to the relationship one has with their college team.

  22. Very generous...I encourage anyone who downloads music to take Brant up on his offer. This is a very generous offer and one that truly gives back of both ones talent and treasure to UNT. I hope you will keep us posted on how this is going. Folks, this is a creative way to help, and it seems to be a real win-win. You get some great music by a UNT Alum AND you get to support the Andrew Smith Scholarship Fund as well...thanks so much. Just great.

  25. None taken. However you obvioulsy lack some common sense skills. Fact: UNT right now is a much better basketball program than SMU. Are both programs getting better?...sure. Those players have not stepped on the court yet though, so it doesn't matter for either of us. To illustrate the obvious, let me attempt a sort of "mascot metaphor": UNT: Soaring Eagle SMU: A little girls' gelded mini-horse covered from head to hoof in pink ribbons and glitter.

  27. With the other rumor about the Sun Belt wanting to add an 11th team, is there a team from that MAC that could jump ship to the Belt? i don't really see anyone the aligns geographically but who knows? I feel like if that the Sun Belt gets an 11th team, they should really look at getting a 12th to get a conference championship game. Maybe LaTech and NMSU will realize their conference is quickly becoming a joke and will decide the join the Sun Belt, making a more formidable conference.

  28. What's the Brain Trust's take on Ron Paul? He certainly has some off-putting stances (women's rights, environment) but there are a lot of things to like here, and he appears to be the only potential candidate who actually allows cerebral reason and personal conviction to dictate his political stances. Certainly wouldn't want his son any where near the ticket, though...

  30. ---Really??? so -- I criticize Obama all the time..???.. I just did. I am not a big Obama fan and might have voted for McCain until he showed such bad judgement and selected Palin (mindless and had never been out of North America ...he had met her only once and think was shocked after the convention at how little she knew) .. I just get annoyed that many just can't realize WHEN the national debt just went crazy... 2% increase per year the 8 years prior to 2001 and then doubled after that.. The truth just isn't what some people want it to be. They are so politically biased that don't see facts. I even voted for Bush Sr. but the radical conservatives abandoned him when he tried to get the budget under control and was. He deserved to be re-elected. Even McCain did not like the fact the debt got out of control after 2001... which is a contributing factor in our economic mess now. It will difficult for ANYONE, ANY PARTY to undo the damage done. [also tough for a family to get out severe debt as well... have to meet current expenses while paying off old ones] Options... severe cuts and/or higher taxes. Neither are popular..... but something will have to be done. People who are going broke have the same options.... earn more money or cut spending.. --- As for Texas -- just explain why we have one of the best economies but have the worst budget problem.... worse than Calf. now. Really bad leadership in Austin..?? . Even C.K.Rylander said several years ago it would occur when she was comptroller (treasurer.) She was right but under-estimated how bad it would be... Few listened and for voted for the guy that said "less taxes and I am conservative etc. (to hell with what needed to be done for the betterment of out state... it was all about getting re-elected). He was offering candy when people really needed something else. Good politicians (and parents) do what is right and not what makes them liked.

During the fall Bynes and Outlaw will be starting Outside recievers along with Chancelor. The inside recievers will be Carey Taylor Schutza and Most likely Chancelor inside some too.

  38. Glad to have Franklin but despite all his high school heroics, he was a bench player with a mediocre OSU team. That doesn't mean he want be great at NT, but at the same time I don't think he is automatically a star in a lessor conference. While high school accolades are meaningful, it is far from recruiting a four star player directly out of high school. There are a lot of "rebound" players who do very well in the Belt but there are also plenty of examples of players that do not. Jones has been very successful with transfers and I think he will be right about Franklin. The best thing I have hear about Franklin is that he is a leader and good defensive player, not that he couldn't be an offensive force at NT. I can think of two very good offensive post players about his size that played for NT. One, fairly recent, Deginald Erskin who was a great offensive player around the basket at a listed 6'5. He would have been prominent in the NT record books if he had not transferred. The other was Kenan Dubose who was a transfer from Arkansas who was also great on the offensive end. Only time will tell if Franklin can recapture some of his high school glory. He is a tweener and as such it will be very interesting to see how he is used. The potential for something great is certainly there, but a good hard nosed defensive player is certainly welcome regardless of his offensive play.

  39. cl is right. The uback and tightend however are almost always on the field at the same time and I cant think of a time when they aren't. I hope to see the uback featured in alot of bootleg type plays this year. I think some added motion with the uback when we are in the I and throw in a bootleg will really help us get the ball into the flats or deep drags depending on the direction the play is designed to go.

  41. Who beats him..??. Palin, Gingrich (worse morally than Clinton), or Donald Trump?? .... So far the worst collection of party candidates ever...any party. Romney maybe but a lot of folks in GOP don't like him... and Huckabee would have trouble in a general election (so many don't like a minister in there because of separation of church and state and he is a birther ( aka wacko )besides) ... Maybe someone will show up but it sure isn't obvious. Besides this economic recession started in Bush years and has improved some but not as much as hoped. The same with the rapidly growing debt... but that hasn't not slowed down due to less taxes being collected due to recession and the tax cuts that took place about 2003...
