  1. Just got my Mean Green Club sticker for my car. It along my Univ. of North Texas License plates makes everyone know I am a Mean Green Fan. I recommend everyone that can to send in to join the Mean Green Club. I am looking forward to this season, because I feel we will turn it around and make a bowl game with a 7-5 win season. GO MEAN GREEN

  2. Hey everybody, I just wanted to thank everybody that helped make the event a great success, Especially Kram. In my time on the cheer team this is the first time anyone has done anything like this and it was amazing and fun. Though I am graduating soon, I will definitely be back next year. Thanks Kram, Thanks MG Nation, thanks GMG.com

  4. Did we have permission of congress when we invaded Granada, Panama, or bombed Libya under Reagan.... Nope. We have not only declared war (by congress) only 5 times in US history... we have had over 200 "warlike" incidents, most done by the White House only... includes a lot--including a lot of Viet Nam escallations, the Gulf War, and Korea. There was no declaration fo war in the Gulf War or Iraq invasion (which was not provoked at all... and no mass killing of local citizens was taking place as has been taking place in Libya. You are just trying to find fault and not looking at history. Guess you aren't listening to those networks... several on there have criticized him and even these actions, just as they did the previous person.... Some Democrats even oppose this ---as did Bob Dole who opposed Bush Sr. when he began the Gulf War in 1990 (he later agreed that he had been wrong to do so). I thought the Iraq INVASION was bad mistake then but I approve of this which is not an invasion either (not that anywone cares about my oppinion) ....as long as we keep ground troops home. Let the locals fight it out and decide the situation.. A no-fly zone keep evens the situation a bit and doesn't allow a few to conquer the many. ..

  9. OK, I am FINALLY able to get on the forum and talk a bit about the game. Sorry ahead of time as this will be a bit lengthy. First things first...Many many thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success...from the players to the cheer squad to the "celebrity refs" to our wonderful sponsors and donors, to those who helped me with ideas and support and to all who came out to both watch and help on game day. I truly hope that you had as much fun as I did. If you couldn't come, make plans to attend (or play) in next year's event. I hope it is even bigger and better. You always learn a thing or two the first time you do one of these events. I would be remiss BIG TIME if I did not give a big shout out of thanks to the UNT Athletic Dept. and in particular PAUL BATCHELDER and JEFF LUSTER... without the help and support of these guys this event would not have been able to take place. In addition, Kendra talkin and Matt Phillips are due a "thank you" for helping me obtain our title sponsor, Metzler's! OK here goes: Final Score: Emmitt01 FINALLY ends up on the winning side in one of these events: GREEN TEAM: 77 .... WHITE TEAM: 49 We had some "honors" to hand out after the game...all selected by our celebrity refs (Raquel Cuffie, Josh White and Shannon Shorter) . White Team MVP: UNT90 White Team Hustle Award: MeanJewGreen Green Team MVP: ECHO (never any doubt in this selection) Green Team Hustle Award: Bonfire Brian Spirit Award: Mean Green Matt Thanks to our brothers Hiatt (Sean and Jason) who were the winning bidders for the autographed football and basketball. And, thanks to all our bidders who helped move the bids up as the event and day progressed...in fact we had a bidder waiting to raise the bid yet again just as time ran out. It was great to see so many of the Cheer Squad show up to cheer for the respective teams and to have so many basketball players come to watch, help and referee. Special thanks go to our two basketball team managers who came and ran our scoreboard and clock, brought the balls for the warm ups and game and the autographed basketball. And, to George Odufawa who helped keep track of player fouls during the game. OK, now for some GREAT NEWS! How did we do for the Cheer Squad? We'll I am very pleased to say that we blew through the goal of $1,000 net to the Cheer Squad and due to the generosity of up sponsors, players , donors and fans we will be handing the Athletic Dept. checks in the amount of $1, 925.00!!!!!! That $1925.00 is AFTER all expenses and will be given to the Athletic Dept. on Monday. You folks are the best! It is in situations like this that I see so many people put aside their differences...be they political or with something related to UNT....to come together to have a great time and to support a great cause...if for no other reason I am happy to have been a part of this because I saw three little kid's faces light up when I gave them small Mean Green Basketballs (thanks to my bride buying them as a gift to the event) and when I saw Emmitt's beautiful little girl sing the Mean Green fight song live and in person along with the UNT Cheer Squad. Made this "old guy's" day! Again, well done all...thanks to everyone and make plans now to be part of next year's event! GO MEAN GREEN!

  12. Terrell and his father were out at practice today. They were VERY enthusiastic about things and followed the D-Line everywhere they went. We don't have many or any players who look like Terrell in a uniform. Also in attendance today were Grant Shaw from Forney, Travis Ellard from Deer Park, Cooper Jones from Lone Oak, Zach Whitfield from Sherman. There was an O-lineman from Corsicana and a massive one from Trinity Valley CC via McKinney Boyd watching practice.

  13. Glad your excited, but the complaints were a little overboard. The residents of Denia didn't want to work with NT, they wanted to mandate what NT did/does with its land. This issue could have been resolved long ago if the city had any foresight and expanded Bonnie Brae either prior to or in conjunction with the building of the stadium. But, Denton being Denton, they will not start this work until some time in the future making access an even bigger mess in the future just like Loop 288,the work on W. University during the Razor Ranch construction and years ago when TI built what is now Discovery Park. Then again, Denton still has residents that will do anything to thwart growth and argue for the sake of arguing.

  16. Why would people care to remember a fact like that? Or us putting a stop to brutal and genocidal dictators in Germany, Iraq, and eventually, the Soviet Union? Or when heavily armed teenagers show up in a village it is cause for terror, except when those teenagers are US soldiers/marines? Or the US leading most humanitarian relief missions after major natural disasters? Those facts only put the US in a positive light. That is all too often not a good thing on the international stage no matter which party is in control here. Doing what is right is hard (and hard to know what to do sometimes). We are Americans, it is what we do and we have learned the hard way that turning turtle often ups the cost in blood and treasure later. We learned that lesson well after WW II in part because we didn't learn it well after WW I. As much as I sometimes would like us to leave things alone in other parts of the world it often isn't in our best interests in the long term.

  17. ---There is a huge difference in Iraq and Libya. First: we didn't start this one, it existed before we finally became involved.. Second: I don't expect us to ever put ground troops in there, so a minimum of American casualties. Third: I am not hearing Europe or many other countries claiming our intel is faulty and for us to wait, which was happening before the Iraq invasion. Four: There are a lot of other countries really involved in this one and wanting to take part (even France), and not just ones that felt they owed us to help. Five: A lot of people in Libya are already actively trying to overthrow the current regine, wasn't happening in Iraq. ---- We are not "THE" leader in this deal, just one of them, and sorta supporting the locals who are being killed. We aren't trying to "win" this one. The locals will have to win it, but other countries can even the playing field by taking out planes and armour to prevent out and out murder of civiliians... .

  18. I sometimes listen to a "conservative guy" on radio when coming home from the evening classes I teach.... A week a two ago they were criticizing our President for not getting involved in Libya situation... Last night they were complaining because he now has. There is no pleasing these folks. ---I am amazed their "fans" never question or realize it when they start saying the opposite of what they were saying earlier --- They complain about the economy and ignore when it all started (2008). Same with the national debt.. the last guy's administration increased it more than all previous 42 administrations combined. The radio guys have no credibility. My only hope is that we absolutely do not put ground troops in the country, even Reagan bombed Libya back in the 80's and it was the right thing to do. It sent a message about so many terrorists coming from and hiding there. My largest concern is that we don't have a worse government take over any of those countries as happened in Iran during the late 1980's. I thought the same same about Iraq.. Saddam was an evil person but at least terrorism wasn't being done to us (or Europeans) by them. Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11, most of those people involved were Saudi citizens (as is Ben-Laden). I suppose time will tell if we are doing the right thing, but I want us to stay away as much as possible from those Middle East situations. At least our President didn't declare this to be a Crusade as the last one said a couple of times. Crusade to them means Christian war or invasion.... which is exactly what the original ones were. ..

  19. You are correct about nothing is without risk. During the original turkey shoot in WWII we absolutley smacked the piss out of the Japanese forces we faced downing their planes at a 10-1 ratio. While it was a huge victory we still suffered losses. In more modern times every time an Arab air force has fought a western force they get smacked out of the sky. They do not have the equipment and, more importantly, the training to stay in a hostile sky with our pilots. Since all no-fly zone enforcement operations involve the destruction of ground targets golden BBs will be flying and I pray that they do not find our people. I do think that Arab nations should take the lead in any ground troops (peacekeepers) that ever end up getting involved.

  21. Rasmussen would find a way to make a poll that says 99% of kids hate ice cream. I'm not in denial that a lot of people don't like the health care law, in fact I've seen plenty of polls that swing one way or the other: 52% against, 54% for, 41% for/25% unsure, ect. ect. I just wouldn't trust any poll that Rasmussen puts out. They've been consistently wrong time and time again.

  23. While I agree with much of your post you should realize that Arab nations do not have the ability to project force very far away from their borders. Very few nations have that capacity and really none of them are Arab. Additionally, their pilots would be in for an actual fight as opposed to our guys having a turkey shoot. The only forces native to the region and capable of enforcing a no fly zone belong to the Israeli military and we all know how that would turn out.

"And here is today's conspicuous potential recruiting target: Corsicana offensive lineman Roclan Drain...." http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Roclan-Drain-124856 This kid is 255? I was at practice and saw the young man too. If he's 255, then he must have stuffed about 40lbs of weight in his pocket before his official weigh in. I thought he was a QB or TE prospect.

  26. My comment about Obama doing stuff outside the normal procedures goes way beyond Libya, but it is just the latest. Regarding Libya, Obama decided to bomb them, yet nobody knew the intention of the mission. How about Obama and his appointed czars to get around senate hearings? How about Obama trampling on the Constitution? I could go on and on. Just trying to find fault? It's not hard when it falls at my feet every day. The man is a joke of a leader. You may not have liked Bush, but we knew where he stood on the issues. Every time their is some sort of crisis Obama is either out of the country or on vacation. He has weakened our military and our image globally and his economic policies have been epic failures.

  27. You're kidding, right? The vast majority of college athletes on scholorships go on to earn college degrees and excell in many different professions ...including teachers, researchers, etc (have you not seen the NCAA commercials about this? ). When I was growing up my coaches in middle school and high school had a huge impact upon my life. I wouldn't who I am today without them. Where did they get their education to become coaches and teachers? Oh, yeah! College! Many of them attend college on athletic scholarships! I agree with the poster above who said if you want to get rid of athletic scholarships you need to get rid of many other scholarships as well.

  28. i don't disagree with nader. athletes generally only help the country with entertainment value, whereas music, merit scholarships lead to other occupations which actually help out the community, be it teachers, researchers, etc. i would hate to see this happen, but it makes a bit of sense. it's not just about kids getting an education, it's about kids helping out the community and making it better.

  30. That's really quite appropriate actually, as we have been working on just that and the chatter around the office for the last year or two has been what an out-of-date web site we have. Nice catch! The re-do is in the works...big meeting Friday about just that thing with our web-site design group we have hired. The problem has always been...as we are a non-profit and rely on contributions for our funding...money is always very tight. We have to prioritze...do we do publications? Do we host conferences? Do we pay our salaries? Or, do we spend money on a web re-design? But, really nice catch...at least you went to the web-site...did you hit the "donate" site and send a few bucks in for our web re-design project?

  31. I really think you need to look up the definition of socialism. Then get back with us. Oh, what the hell, I'll do it for you : 1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. 2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory. 3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles. I'm guessing you are going with #3?

  32. It's all a question of priorities when money is tight. No stimulus money for IPI as we don't support any politician or any political campaign. We deal in policy, not political parties. We tend to think we are "equal opportunity" thinkers.

  34. And educating members of our community who may not otherwaise have the means to attend college, that doesn't help out the community? Professional athletes generally only help the country with entertainment walue, but as the NCAA does such a great job of reminding us, the rest of the athletes that don't go pro, go on to become teachers, dr's, lawyers, business people. They add value to the community.

  40. "McCarthy could face up to five years in prison based on the single charge he currently faces." Folks...tap the brakes a bit on the indignant outrage. The operative word in the statement is "could". The guy has not been tried nor sentenced as yet. I do love the way some try to write this off as a "victim-less crime" and compare the probable outcome to more serious crimes (serious in the opinion and minds of the poster). One can find any number of seemingly "strange" sentences for all sorts of crimes. Not a good idea to compare as you probably were not at the trial and have no real knowledge of what the full circumstances were as presented. I definitely agree that some of this sort of thing makes very little sense, but it is very hard to compare "apples to apples" in the case of courtroom trials, crimes, etc., etc. None the less...this guy deserves whatever punishment he gets. And, for me, I would shed no tears if he got the full five years! We have been through this in another thread...not the football board, of course, so no need to re-hash it all. The guy is a thief and he is stealing intellectual property and causing others economic harm while probably placing a few more people in the unemployment lines. If you think this sort of thing is "fun" and victim-less, well, you are sadly mistaken and very very naive. Or, you have aided and abetted this crime by participating and thought, "no harm no foul", I'm getting stuff for free...yipee!

  41. My problem with Libya, and Obama in general, is that he goes about his business without the knowledge or approval of Congress. He skirts the law as best he can and then "escapes" to another country, in this case Chile, to avoid the immediate backlash. Then again, the liberal media, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, etc... will never call him on any of this. Some of you may not have like Bush or how he went about his business, but the man did what he thought was in the best interest of the United States, not the world, and was upfront and communicated to Congress what his actions would be. In fact, in the case of invading Iraq, the Democratic led Congress approved of this move. Obama has no foreign policy and no leadership skills.

  46. Interesting to me what is happening now that the legislation is actually seeing the light of day. Read on: Matthews: As ObamaCare Turns One, More Americans Than Ever Oppose It DALLAS, TX: This week, White House allies and other left-leaning coalitions will plan a week of events nationwide to mark the first anniversary of ObamaCare, but Institute for Policy Innovation (IPI) resident scholar Dr. Merrill Matthews says it’s the best indicator yet that Democrats have lost the health care battle. "The Obama administration must have sent out an SOS (support our stupidity) memo, and, right on cue, the minions came out defending the health care reform legislation," said Matthews. "No one believes the left would be holding a national pep rally if ObamaCare was even a little popular." A new Rasmussen poll recently found 62 percent of Americans want ObamaCare repealed—the highest percentage since May, yet the public is repeatedly being bombarded with misleading defenses by the talking heads who support it. "The president claimed that his health care law would be a milestone, ultimately raising the Democrats’ stature. Instead, it’s become a millstone, sinking their hopes for years to come," said Matthews. "And the more Democrats try to defend their law, the more indefensible it appears." For example, the Department of Health and Human Services has granted more than a thousand temporary waivers to organizations—including unions that supported the bill—claiming that moving quickly to the law’s new, onerous guidelines would be devastating. The state of Maine has also requested a waiver and more states may follow. Matthews suggests the press investigate those supporters at the rallies to see how many of them belong to a group that got a pass on complying with the law. The legislation has become one of the most contentious in recent memory, with some 30 states challenging ObamaCare’s constitutionality in court and many passing provisions asserting that the federal government can’t force their citizens to buy health insurance or pay a fine. "The legislation backfired and now its supporters think they have to fire back," concluded Matthews. "ObamaCare has become a national pariah, and the Democrats know they have to do something. They are reading the polls much more closely than they ever read the legislation." The Institute for Policy Innovation (IPI) is an independent, nonprofit public policy organization based in Dallas, Texas. IPI resident scholar and health care expert Dr. Merrill Matthews is available for interview by contacting Erin Humiston at (972) 874-5139, or erin@ipi.org.

  48. So funny to see those that are in complete support of the Iraq and Afganistan war to be against the Lybian action. Even more funny to see those that were so against the "Bush oil war" in Iraq be in complete support of Pres. Obama's unilateral, non-congressionally approved action in Lybia. If Bush had done the same thing, these same folks would be going ballistic with the fascist rhetoric. As long as it is "my side" doing it, I'll defend it, critical thinking be damned!! Quite amusing.

  49. Like most people reading this board I'm super-excited about the new stadium, but I understand the Denia complaints. It's a very nice neighborhood with residents that feel that UNT could do better in terms of access to the stadium. Let's be honest, UNT is taking a short-sighted approach to access (ie. saving money). Bonnie Brae is WAY too narrow and not designed for the potential traffic the new stadium will attract. Bonnie Brae should be under construction now, not sometime in the future. WillowWood is a very weak alternative(but cheap). The residents of Denia have forced UNT to spend more money (500,000 out of 90 million) and supply slightly better access. I think it's a good thing.
