We have taken the kids a few times to support Collin Mangrum and when I yell/cheer, people turn around and look at me weird like something's wrong with me. Last game I attended, the family in front of me actually left and sat on the other side of the coliseum (of course, I could see them b/c there were so few people there.) The friends with the Mangrum family patted me on the back and said, 'we're glad you're sitting with us. Why did they come to a game if they didn't think people were going to cheer?' It is definitely a sad spectacle to attend the SMU games. We went to one game where a few frats sat together and yelled and cheered, but then, most of them left before the game was over. It isn't like there is a mad traffic rush to beat, either. But, then again, our voices ring loud across the entire arena. Great acoustics when it's empty. I took my daughter last Saturday and we went to Twisted Root after the game. A handful of SMU students walked by us and said "Go Ponies! We saw you at the game!" I laughed and said "you probably heard me at the game!" They cracked up and said "yeah, everyone heard you!" *shrug* I miss Mean Green basketball, but do enjoy supporting the Mangrums. (I know most of you are going to consider me a traitor. But, be kind. I did NOT buy any SMU gear and our middle son usually wears a UNT shirt to the game, as a matter of principle.)6 points

Okay then, Phase 2: Sun Belt basketball games are broadcast regularly on CSS. This is a regional cable provider, one that is not available here in Dallas no matter how much I'd be willing to pay for it. These games are available on cable, just like the cable I'm paying for here in Dallas. But because of regional distribution, I can't access it. Almost without exception, there aren't even any options to go see these games at a sports bar or restaurant, no matter how thorough their premium channel package may be. If I lived in Alabama or Louisiana (I think), I would be watching this for no additional charge in the comfort of my own home. If it were an option, I'd go to Pluckers or Fox & Hound and watch them there. Roughly 25-30% of these CSS games end up available on ESPN3.com through contractual arrangement. When that happens, I can watch a web stream of the same broadcast, MINUS commercials, and there is no question that this is just fine. I can access these broadcasts because of the cable/internet provider I already pay for. Not criminal, not morally wrong. But for the other 70-75% that I have no way to access; if I watch them through Channelsurfing WITH the commercials intact... Is that criminal? Morally wrong? Why?4 points

How would the GMG family feel about GOMEANGREEN.COM name tags ? I envision a green plastic tag with a magnetic backing with one's GMG name and the member's real name. I go to events and later hear of other GMG members being at the same event but I have no idea who some of you are. On the other hand, do most of the GMG members perfer to be invisible ? to be able to voice opinions or ideas that they'd rather not be associated with in person ? Just a thought. And I get to pick the shade of green. My idea. GO MEAN GREEN3 points

Ok, got rid of dups between the lists... I didn't include this because it would make the list waaay too wide, but all but like 4 or 5 are interested in multiple aq schools(for whatever that means). Scout shows 45 and rivals shows 50. The combined list has 85 showing interest, so there weren't as many dups as I thought there would be. I took Andrew McNulty off the scout list...apparently Scout doesn't know that he is a 2011 recruit for U of NT. Anyways, this should paste into a spreadsheet fairly easily if you are interested in analyzing... or maybe you just aren't as geeky as me. Bigger as a general rule is better in football, but there are far more important aspects. Skill, quickness, determination and intelligence are all traits that also factor into the makeup of a good football player. I think back to all those fears of little Gill at offensive tackle by fans ignoring the fact that he could play and had beaten out a lot of much bigger players. Troy last year defensive ends were 6'2 250 and 6'4 245, dts were 6' 252 and 6'3 288. FIU des were 6'1 226 and 6'3 231, dts were 6'2 272 and 6'2 268. The two best teams in the belt didn't exactly have giants playing in the defensive line. The Muts the other Belt bowl team went 6'3 231, 6'2 272, 6'6 275 and 6'1 226 across the defensive line. Almost any combination of defensive linemen NT comes up with will be of comparable size or bigger. Boutwell and McCoy will probably both gain weight and the other DT's White, Cantly Abbe and the two freshmen are all larger than any of the dts listed from the three Belt team. I am much more concerned that we have little experience at dt rather than lack of size.3 points

If he is the 3 technique, which I assume he is, he is going to need to only gain about 15-20 lbs. which is certainly doable. Last year we had two guys who had 1 technique skills playing the 1 and 3 technique, and that is why we didn't get a good pash rush up the middle. I think he will do fine at tackle. With Cantly and Abbe at the 1 technique we should be ok there, and at the 3 technique McCoy should be able to generate a pash rush up the middle. We don't know what these guys new weight are this year yet so until I do, I am going to assume that the staff has the guys on a plan to be at the correct weight for their positions.3 points

How about a few current successful head coaches? Ronnie Hearne, Head Coach, Tarleton State, 125-73 in 7 seasons at TSU, 25-5 this year, entered the NCAA DII tournament as the 20th ranked team nationally and made it to the second round last week. Randy Gipson, Northeastern State(OK) Head coach, finished 25-5 this season, ranked 9th nationally going into the NCAA Div II tourny and made it to the second round. 224-114 in 11 straight winning seasons at Northeastern State. And for the young up and coming candidate: Beth Jillson, Head Coach Texas Women's University. I figure she is about 32 years old maybe? She is 62-49 in 4 seasons at TWU, 19-11 this season. Lead TWU to their first ever NCAA Div II berth this year but lost in the first round. Added bonus: Would only need to change office and parking locations. Rick3 points

CAPPS RESIGNS AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH I remember the Startlegram reporting earlier that year that she was asked to fire an assistant by their AD, and she either refused or reluctantly did, can't remember which? Then goes on a 19-0 conference win streak and a second trip to the NCAA's then walks away as the top up and coming women's college basketball coach in Texas. A year later she was on our front door step only to be turned away for an unproven commodity that had never been a head college basketball coach in her life. Rick3 points

Lot of short term views being expressed, stealing from big corporations should not be prosecuted? You know the problem with not paying for things, is eventually people stop making them. AOM, I am sad to report that I have elicited a similar reaction from some fans in my section at Fouts...seemingly a study hall on some game days in the past...I hope the new stadium with seats within the same zip code as the field will change the crowd participation a bit. On the other side, seeing Brand X advance this far makes me wonder if we shouldn't be interested in participating. Think of it as a minor bowl, giving our team extra weeks of practice. This year, with the injuries and limited depth, maybe not, but I would be inclined to consider an opportunity like this in the future. GMG2 points

Who's team is it anyway guys (ie.who is the coach- not you). I am guessing by your posts above if he follows your thinking how many more games will we win next year if he called you and got directions before working with the men we have at this time? I wish him luck taking over this team. He certainly will need it.2 points

---There is a huge difference in Iraq and Libya. First: we didn't start this one, it existed before we finally became involved.. Second: I don't expect us to ever put ground troops in there, so a minimum of American casualties. Third: I am not hearing Europe or many other countries claiming our intel is faulty and for us to wait, which was happening before the Iraq invasion. Four: There are a lot of other countries really involved in this one and wanting to take part (even France), and not just ones that felt they owed us to help. Five: A lot of people in Libya are already actively trying to overthrow the current regine, wasn't happening in Iraq. ---- We are not "THE" leader in this deal, just one of them, and sorta supporting the locals who are being killed. We aren't trying to "win" this one. The locals will have to win it, but other countries can even the playing field by taking out planes and armour to prevent out and out murder of civiliians... .2 points

You're kidding, right? The vast majority of college athletes on scholorships go on to earn college degrees and excell in many different professions ...including teachers, researchers, etc (have you not seen the NCAA commercials about this? ). When I was growing up my coaches in middle school and high school had a huge impact upon my life. I wouldn't who I am today without them. Where did they get their education to become coaches and teachers? Oh, yeah! College! Many of them attend college on athletic scholarships! I agree with the poster above who said if you want to get rid of athletic scholarships you need to get rid of many other scholarships as well.2 points
-
And educating members of our community who may not otherwaise have the means to attend college, that doesn't help out the community? Professional athletes generally only help the country with entertainment walue, but as the NCAA does such a great job of reminding us, the rest of the athletes that don't go pro, go on to become teachers, dr's, lawyers, business people. They add value to the community.2 points

Bobsledding teams are made up of some of the strongest, fastest and best fit individuals on the planet, especially the sprinters. I spoke with JQ at the KState game. Johnny got his foot in the door for a tryout through contacts he made while training at the MIcheal Johnson training center. He tried out but got cut at first. Then got a last second call to fill in because another sprinter showed up at a race 15lbs over weight. So JQ hopped on a plane and competed as a reservist and his team finished third for that race. This was just the break he needed. There's only two tracks in north America, with 8 races per year so your window of opportunity is very small for this sport and The Mighty Quinn made it count when he had to. Rick2 points

Just some random thinking about what is now developing in Libya. It does appear that the rebels are being beaten back by the government forces. I know it's not over as yet and may turn really ugly before it is, but I was pondering the lack of any real response by the West in this situation, and wondering what others may think of it. It seems to me the West is simply sitting back and allowing this to develop and providing the pro-government forces with all the time they need to put down the revolution. Sure, Libya is a non-player pretty much in the oil-rich Middle East, so that's not much of an issue for the West. But, here we have a nation's citizenry rising up in protest of a tyrant of a dictator, taking up arms in the hopes of overthrowing the dictatorship, and the collective West, led by the Unites States lack of any action, sits on its hands and talks. Is this an opportunity missed? Is it important that the United States and its allies support such movements? Will this be an opportunity lost? Or, is this a case where the US and its allies should do what it is...pretty much nothing? The rebels have been offered amnesty if the lay down their arms. Does anyone really believe that they would be allowed to just "go home" and live peacefully with the same government still in place? Really? If so, I would love to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn. One can almost guarantee retaliation in one form or another...and probably a series of disappearances and sham trials for the leadership of the revolt and "simple" jail, murder and/or torture of the lesser participants. While the US didn't help plan this revolt, is this somewhat akin to the Bay of Pigs disaster where the West simply backed off at the last minute and allowed all the invasion forces to be slaughtered on the Cuban beaches? Is standing by and doing nothing the proper thing to do in this case? I really am beginning to wonder about what the West is responsible for in this whole mess. I know the West cannot "bail out" revolts and intercede in every part of the globe with military force or with material for that matter, but should it simply stand by and watch the slaughter? Pretty big question. And, I know I am glad that I am not the one making the decision. But I do feel for the people of Libya who "caught the fire" of rebellion lit in the area and which was fostered by the citizens of Egypt, and who now have pretty much found themselves abandoned by the West (at this stage of the game anyway). Thoughts? Seems to me the West tells folks "rise up, overthrow your dictatorial leadership, set up a more democratic form of government, embrace freedom" and we will support you, only to sit idly by when the opportunity comes to actually help. How will history judge the actions of the West? Don't know...I have no crystal ball. I only ask the question and ponder the answer. Thoughts?1 point

http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/03/18/2932654/bunk-in-bulk.html My favorite segment. Mad and Misinformed The problem is that people are so angry - but for all of the wrong reasons. One e-mail I've received over and over again is a spreadsheet that purports to show how badly things are going under President Obama. The first column shows that the price of gasoline was $1.83 in January of 2009 and as of the date of the spreadsheet it was $3.10, a rise of 69.6 percent. The next shows West Texas Intermediate selling for $38.74 when Obama took office (it would fall to $33 a few weeks later), and on the day the spreadsheet was done it was $91.35 -- or a 135.9 percent increase. The columns seem endless. My problem with that spreadsheet is that if you did one on the presidency of George W. Bush, it too would show disheartening percentages. For example, the price of oil at his inauguration was around $18, but rose to $147 a barrel within a few years. That's a 716.6 percent increase; and gasoline went from $1.55 a gallon to $4.12, up 258.7 percent. Of course the parts of the spreadsheet that show more unemployment and less income actually began before Obama moved into the White House, but the numbers fell into his first two months in office. I am not defending Obama, nor am I indicting Bush. I'm merely pointing out that these things have been out of control no matter who nominally controlled the White House or the Congress. But, because people want to make them political issues instead of recognizing that they are economic, they cannot be resolved. We can't have an adult conversation on fixing problems because the national discussion sounds more like a bunch of angry 6th-graders calling each other names.1 point

Maybe we should not keep score and just give a participation trophy. That would dispel the "win at all costs" stigma. While we're at it, let's just give a certificate of completion and do away with degree requirements. And, we could do away with college campuses and do everything online. Ralph Nader is a joke. He has made numerous runs for president and gathered about as much support as the Socialist Party candidate. I'm embarrassed that the chose to call his party the Green Party.1 point

Chris Jones was an all area first team selection and Jordan Williams was a second team pick. Interesting that Jarion Henry of Kimball was a first team all area selection but Jordan Williams was selected as the MVP of the district. Trey Norris was co-mvp of his district along with Tom Gipson a Kansas State signee. Anyone know if Gipson is the son of the NT former center? Easily the best haul of area talent since Trilli signed Chris Davis, Dexter Tennell and the never qualifying Jamal Brown. Chris turned out to be one of the best all time at NT. Dexter was a great scorer but didn't last long at NT. Hopefully this years trio of Norris, Jones and Williams will turn out to be the anchors of NT teams for the next four years. I can see both Jones and Williams being four year starters for NT.1 point

Countless others have, but we have not. The experience at the head coach position alone is unheralded, let alone throughout the rest of the staff. D-1 experience in the SEC, the Big East and the Big XII, and that's just the HC. I don't remember hearing but a small minority that were not pleased with this hire. Count me as one of the excited bunch, with sky high expectations, like playing close to .500, which is absolutely possible, or even finishing with a winning record. Crazy talk I know. We didn't get "out played" the last few yrs as much as we got "out coached", consistently. With that said, we are not one of the Big Boys, only in coaching salary's are we relatively close, and even then not so much. We still don't look like a D-1 school, with as much admitted by Coach Dan several times, and those types of candid and honest assesments leads me to believe we might actually have a head coach that knows what he's doing. That and the fact that every hire save one has D-1 coaching experience, including both coordinators and almost every position coach, and were being wooed by other D-1 schools, leads me to believe the entire staff as well might know what they're doing. Still not a Bog Boy, still don't look like a D-1 school, but that doesn't mean we can't compete and win in the belt, and/or play .500 football, finish with a winnning record and/or go bowling.1 point

I have to say that I agree with you. Countless schools have hired experienced, winning head coaches and not been successful. Don't get me wrong, I really want UNT to get to a higher level. I'm just not going to shoot my expectations up sky high before we've even played a game.1 point

I sometimes listen to a "conservative guy" on radio when coming home from the evening classes I teach.... A week a two ago they were criticizing our President for not getting involved in Libya situation... Last night they were complaining because he now has. There is no pleasing these folks. ---I am amazed their "fans" never question or realize it when they start saying the opposite of what they were saying earlier --- They complain about the economy and ignore when it all started (2008). Same with the national debt.. the last guy's administration increased it more than all previous 42 administrations combined. The radio guys have no credibility. My only hope is that we absolutely do not put ground troops in the country, even Reagan bombed Libya back in the 80's and it was the right thing to do. It sent a message about so many terrorists coming from and hiding there. My largest concern is that we don't have a worse government take over any of those countries as happened in Iran during the late 1980's. I thought the same same about Iraq.. Saddam was an evil person but at least terrorism wasn't being done to us (or Europeans) by them. Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11, most of those people involved were Saudi citizens (as is Ben-Laden). I suppose time will tell if we are doing the right thing, but I want us to stay away as much as possible from those Middle East situations. At least our President didn't declare this to be a Crusade as the last one said a couple of times. Crusade to them means Christian war or invasion.... which is exactly what the original ones were. ..1 point

There's also this: WE CAN WIN THIS REVOLUTION BY OURSELVES! GO AWAY USA! F-U, EU! followed by: WE NEED A NO-FLY ZONE! read as: we want a no fly zone only, only to follow with: WE WANT A NO-FLY ZONE! WE WANT TACTICAL AIRSTRIKES! which of course, is always a precursor to demands for ground forces, and then with the arrival of ground forces, there will probably be: GO AWAY USA! F-U, EU!
