Green59....thanks for the kind words about last evening's event. I really had a great time and it was good to have so many coaches and RV with us as well. I think we had over 35 people in the room (not counting athletic staff and coaches) at one point, and I am told several new members were added to the ranks of the Mean Green Club last evening. How can you hear Coach Mac speak and not get fired up over the prospects for the Mean Green? That guy is the real deal, and we will definitely see the Mean green heading in the right direction starting this evening at spring practice. He makes no bones about what needs to be done, and he is setting the stage for the challenges that lie ahead, but what is great is his "WHY NOT NORTH TEXAS" attitude and the fact that he is dedicated to going after D1 level prospects that the "big boys" are also going after. He says we will recruit against the "big boys" not the 1-AA teams going forward. How refreshing is that to hear, and even better, to hear UNT not only competed with but beat some of the "big boys" in signing his first class. Thanks to everyone who turned out last evening...if I tried to name everyone I know I would miss so many. On a side note...did everyone notice how good RV looked in his new slimmed down self? I think he said he had lost about 40 pounds since December. The guy really did look good and he seemed very excited about the prospects for the program. Thanks again to all for your help and support with this event.8 points

Seriously people...you're the group responsible for GWTOGMT...there is no reason we shouldn't be well beyond the $500 goal for a group of 18-22 year old ladies in skimpy outfits.4 points

"What he doesn't believe -- and I tend to agree with him -- is that UNT has Division I level size, especially on its offensive and defensive lines. McCarney said UNT has a real lack of 300-pound guys and way too many defensive linemen who are shorter than he is." I like Mac more and more as well based on this quote from Vito's blog in another post. Hopefully the recent (read: since 2004) pollyanna view of the state of these positions--which remain areas of dire need--is a view that has run its course, and there is some objectivity at last. Revive us again, Mac!! Hallelujah! Thine the glory! Hallelujah, AMEN!!3 points

It was an enjoyable time spent at Metzler's last night for the Mean Green Club Happy Hour! A special thanks goes out to KRAM1, the UNT athletic staff and Metzler's BBQ for putting this event together. It was a real treat to listen to those who came out to speak to us...Villareal, Mac, Canales, Simmonds, Riddle, Conley and the Assistant Strength Coach whose name escapes me. I think it is great how the coaches are getting out in public to talk to the fans to stir up interest in the Mean Green program....I do believe Coach Mac when he says he will do everything in his power to make that Houston game a sell out. The start of spring practice is only 12 hours away! Hopefully many of us will be there tonight at Fouts Field for the "open to the public" practice to show our support for the new coaches and the team. GMG!2 points

Thank you Mark for taking your time, and probably some of your money to make this event happen. Thhis was such a good event, my wife even attended and asked a question of Coach McCarney. She had a good time, hence, I had a good time. Thanks again.2 points

Why would someone put a minus 1 on this posting? A problem with KRAM1 organizing this event, the Mean Green Club, Coach Mac, Rick V?2 points

No, let's do give Trilli credit for the green seats. People had griped about the orange seats for years.....but it wasn't until Vic got to Denton that anything was done. Joe and I were both on the green seat committee, but the credit rightfully belongs to Vic....on this.1 point

Not even close, Blakeley lived on Robbins/Tubbs recruits and once their eligibility was up; NT's record plummeted. Blakeley was colorful and coached an exciting brand of ball, but like many before him and after him; he just could not get the players he needed at NT. I liked Bill, he was a quite a showman. He as so often the case, more or less terminated himself as he went very public with his complaints about NT and in particular their lack of recruiting funds. You may get by publicly complaining about your situation a la Dickey while you are winning but few last long once the losing starts. Blakeley was basically a .500 coach with his own recruits. He was much better than his replacement, but it was time for him to go. I do believe Blakeley's plight had a lot to do with inadequate resources both legal and otherwise. I know he had recruited both Terry Teagle and Vinnie Johnson to NT before Baylor came in at the last minute apparently with some inducements NT couldn't match. As corupt as recruiting is these days, I believe it was worse back in the seventies. As far as the worst thing that ever happened to MBB at NT, I would nominate Vic Trilli.1 point

I still don't understand why NT has only 1 ship left if in fact, NT can use the full 85 maximum. I just can't account for that many scholarships.1 point

Yes "I" will be there. And I am saying this without a rude tone. As co-captain of the cheer team I plan on attending. Also, I claim credit for two sponsors as one is my place of employment and one is my dad's business.1 point

You know, I have always disliked this guys William F. Buckley-like dismissive attitude toward liberal/centrist political issues. But for all of you who live in Denton,IMHO you couldn't find a more competent person to be on the city council. Need proof? Just look at the new stadium being built. Without the student vote (Derrick was a major player in making it happen), that stadium wouldn't be happening right now. Just my humble opinion, but I give this guy more credit for the stadium than RV.1 point

Likewise, Nike UNT gear has been available in the past, well prior to McCarney joining the Mean Green.1 point

A loser is a person who who can't spell and post on the internet "loose lose". A winner is a person who gets a brand new softball facility built, locker rooms remodeled in the pit, dedicated court for volleyball, academic center for athletes, oh wait, A BRAND SPANKING NEW FOOTBALL STADIUM. I have never thought that R.V was an "idiot". If you think that Dr. B. did not have her hands on this sweet deal that Shanice got, you are crazy.1 point

This is probably going to get me ripped , but TCU is about to join the Big East. The Horned Frogs will see a improvement over the next few years with better rercuits and probably a splash hire for hoops soon. As much as I dislike them, SMU plays in a superior conference , has a very nice recruiting class coming in & just won a post season game. We are not leap years ahead of either and if we stumble anytime soon both could pass us by pretty quick. The one thing that currently seperates our programs is Johnny Jones & the coaching staff If Tony Mitchell suits up in December then I will expect to be playing again for the title in Hot Springs !1 point

As for the 4-5 positions, we have Knox. Edwards and Robinson, a frosh who is a face-the-bucket guy not a back-to-the-bucket guy and we may have Mitchell - or maybe not. Hogans is the only proven commodity and he is hardly a big. So we have only one guy who we know can play and he is only 6-7, two who have yet to prove they can handle extended minutes, a freshman, and an academic question. Am I missing someone? Maybe I am. If not, we need bigs. You never have too many bigs.1 point

You can't beat a festival put on by Fort Worth. They know how to do it right. Plus, as mentioned in another post, you could grab some mexican food at Joe T's, head over to Billy Bob's or check out the shops in the Stockyards/Stockyards Station. Just to the west of downtown Fort Worth is the arts district with great museums.1 point

I was going to make the same suggestion. Or, for more of a Texas feel, you could stay at the Gaylord Texan (across the street from Great Wolf) and go to Great Wolf for the waterpark. I have two boys with special needs and they both did well at Great Wolf. They supply life jackets as well. I'm not sure what the special needs are, but I noticed right now that the Gaylord is donating 10% of the room cost to Autism Speaks. (Might impress the wife.) Sticking with the Texas theme, you could go to the Fort Worth Stock Yards. You might take a tour of Cowboys Stadium. If your wife is a history buff, you could take her to where Kennedy was shot and visit the JFK museum. I know the wife doesn't like to do a lot of walking, so proceed at your own risk. http://www.gaylordhotels.com/gaylord-texan/specials-packages/index.html?source=GT-ch=gppc-cid=GenL-GaylordExact&s_kwcid=TC|15753|gaylord%20texan||S|e|6449842877 http://www.fortworthstockyards.org/Index.aspx http://stadium.dallascowboys.com/tours/tourInfo.cfm http://www.jfk.org/1 point

Just wanted to let everyone know that the deadline is fast approaching for getting in on the first brick paver order for the new Alumni Pavilion being constructed at the new football stadium. APRIL 30th is the drop dead date to get your orders in for pavers...and to get any friends, family members or fellow alums to get their orders in so they will be ready and installed by the opening of the new Alumni pavilion. http://untalumni.com/alumni_pavilion.php The attached link should direct you to a site where you can order a paver to be installed in time for the grand opening of the pavilion. Orders can be taken after April 30th, of course, but there would be no guarantee that they would be ready and installed in time for the grand opening of the UNT Alumni Pavilion. Pavers would make great gifts for graduates, family members who are UNT Alums, yourself, etc. Also, if you are not currently a UNT Alumni member you can join by simply going to: http://UNTalumni.com.0 points

Makes me think of a gal I knew . . . her parents were Mexican born and bred. She and another girl were sitting on the couch watching a movie. Her dad walks in and asks, "What movie you watchin'?" The girls say, "Beaches." Eventually he sits down and watches the last of the movie with them. At the end, he turns to the girls and asks, "So which of them is the beetches?"0 points

Nice...very nice, but that "Beaches" thing...I'm not so sure. Like the idea of romantic movies with the wife, however...in a job like Coach Mac has I would imagine that you would be gone so much that you have to grab whatever chance you have to enjoy some private time together. Addendum: At the Mean Green happy Hour I asked Coach mac about Beaches. He said "how do you know about that"???? Funny...and then he went on to explain the deal...very good comment about he and his wife and how they enjoy these things together. I later talked with Coach Canales and he confirmed that he and his wife also enjoy special times together like Coach McCarney does. These guys work long and hard hours and they know their wives and kids are special. Really great time last evening spent with several of the coaches and RV. Good stuff! The entire staff seems to be a very close knit group!0 points

Would that be Austin Landscape Gardens? If so, I talked with your dad...nice guy! Thanks for the good work with the sponsors. You definitely get the "we" on this one and a +1 from me as well...will look forward to seeing you Saturday. This is going to be a lot of fun.-1 points

...as opposed to the not-so-quiet times with his ex-wife........ Look Mark, I'm not being critical of Coach McCarney, I'm just presenting a realistic speculation as to the "Beaches" thing in the interview. I don't need to admire him as a husband, just as a coach. And if the athletic department can head off any unnecessary distractions by presenting him as a guy who is sensitive and devoted to his wife, then fine with me. Just don't expect me to swallow it whole like some gullible, fawning, fan.-1 points
