http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/03/18/2932654/bunk-in-bulk.html My favorite segment. Mad and Misinformed The problem is that people are so angry - but for all of the wrong reasons. One e-mail I've received over and over again is a spreadsheet that purports to show how badly things are going under President Obama. The first column shows that the price of gasoline was $1.83 in January of 2009 and as of the date of the spreadsheet it was $3.10, a rise of 69.6 percent. The next shows West Texas Intermediate selling for $38.74 when Obama took office (it would fall to $33 a few weeks later), and on the day the spreadsheet was done it was $91.35 -- or a 135.9 percent increase. The columns seem endless. My problem with that spreadsheet is that if you did one on the presidency of George W. Bush, it too would show disheartening percentages. For example, the price of oil at his inauguration was around $18, but rose to $147 a barrel within a few years. That's a 716.6 percent increase; and gasoline went from $1.55 a gallon to $4.12, up 258.7 percent. Of course the parts of the spreadsheet that show more unemployment and less income actually began before Obama moved into the White House, but the numbers fell into his first two months in office. I am not defending Obama, nor am I indicting Bush. I'm merely pointing out that these things have been out of control no matter who nominally controlled the White House or the Congress. But, because people want to make them political issues instead of recognizing that they are economic, they cannot be resolved. We can't have an adult conversation on fixing problems because the national discussion sounds more like a bunch of angry 6th-graders calling each other names.3 points

Since when has this NOT been allowed? As "commissioner" I approve copious amounts...it might ease the aches before they even occur!2 points

You know, I have always disliked this guys William F. Buckley-like dismissive attitude toward liberal/centrist political issues. But for all of you who live in Denton,IMHO you couldn't find a more competent person to be on the city council. Need proof? Just look at the new stadium being built. Without the student vote (Derrick was a major player in making it happen), that stadium wouldn't be happening right now. Just my humble opinion, but I give this guy more credit for the stadium than RV.2 points

Exactly. The guy is clearly getting a pass because he is a Kenyan Muslim without a birth certificate with terrorist sympathies who hates America and all she stands for and is covertly trying to form a Socialist Caliphate so he can proclaim himself Prophet. So would I, but unfortunately that is not the standard that was set by the media with our last President. Just trying to follow the ever-changing rules. I guess they changed again? Please let me know when these changes happen, or should I just assume they will change yet again when the next republican is President?2 points

Just an FYI....the GMG.com flag football game is tentatively being set for Saturday, May 28th. Guess what? That is not graduation weekend. I checked already! The 28th date is not set in stone as yet as there are still a few details to be worked out to be 100% sure of the date. In addition, there is consideration being given for a bit of a new format for the game...one I think everyone will really enjoy and one that has the possibility of attracting a bigger crowd to watch and more donations to the scholarship fund. So, I just wanted everyone to know...in case you were one who might have thought that the basketball game was taking away from the football game planning...that we are "on track" for what I believe would be the 8th Annual GMG.Com Bowl? Eight, right? Details to follow, but I just wanted to let everyone know that we are not ignoring the football game...it is already in the planning stages. GO MEAN GREEN! Go GMG.Com Bowl!1 point

Yes, I had a meeting with the players union and we are all set. I just said "beer is good" and tailgating will occur and they signed off on it in a heartbeat! Good to Go! By the way...it's a new 10 year agreement, so we are set for some time to come. None of this lockout/shutdown silliness will impede the playing of the GMG.COM BOWL!!!!! Not as long as I am commissioner as the players can always buy me off with a cold beer or two.1 point

SMU still does, and will always suck and lacks the balls to play us in basketball, so who gives a crap about what they do or who they play. They're just another allegation away from probation anyway, and nobody outside of their little pocket of Dallas cares about the program. HoopManX, do you think we care? I've been on vacation and have heard nothing, not one drop of news regarding these spare tournaments, much less who is playing in them. The expense is just not justified. Losing 20 grand to play in a game nobody watches, that garners zero media coverage outside of the Park City News and the Pony Glue Factory is a waste.1 point

Dude, the guys at the Denton post office are actually pretty knowledgeable. I don't know who you see for your post office questions, but these guys are generally awesome. There's two kinds of socialism here. You have the police/fire/armed forces/libraries/public universities like our University of North Texas kind of socialism. And then you have the der komissar/shoot you to death as you cross the wire fence/KGB/komrade Stolichczny kind of socialism. Last I checked, we have the first, and it's pretty limited to just that kind of socialism. No one is coming to my apartment asking me questions about things my neighbors have said about the current administration. I'm not being interrogated for fraternizing with the west. I think we're okay.1 point
-
Laugh all you want, but when the dust settles the United States has lost its healthcare system to the socialists. Like going to the lobby of the post office for help? These are the same people who want to be in charge of your healthcare needs. Seems like a great pie in the sky system until you or a loved one needs some real medical attention. Fewer breakthroughs in medical research and a smaller pool of doctors will be the eventual outcome.1 point

Rasmussen would find a way to make a poll that says 99% of kids hate ice cream. I'm not in denial that a lot of people don't like the health care law, in fact I've seen plenty of polls that swing one way or the other: 52% against, 54% for, 41% for/25% unsure, ect. ect. I just wouldn't trust any poll that Rasmussen puts out. They've been consistently wrong time and time again.1 point

Is it out of the question that a first time head coach be offered less than a 5 year contract ? Unless she's making that much as an assistant, a $110,000 per year deal sounds great to me. And everybody wants the same thing. For NT to win. The Coach wants to win, the AD wants to win, the fans want to win, and the players want to win. So, if everybody wants the same thing, why wouldn't a 2 year contract with a 2 year renewable option be acceptable to everybody ? When acceptable progress is shown, we want to reward that coach with another 2 years. And again, this is more money that she's making as an assistant. There's no other industry that would enter into such a deal. And the contract is ony binding on one side-the University's. If the coach gets a call from Old Dominion or Baylor, she's gone. So what does the contract really do. Except keep a bad coach in a good job. With good money.1 point

Come on...this was a press release!!! Any coach could have 0-100 with any school and when they're being shown the door the PR would have said some thing to effect "hard decision" to make. RV made this decision long ago and it's not hard SS got the "if you don't win" X number of games our out of hear long ago!! Funniest marketing campaign I ever heard of was "94 feet of heat"!!!1 point

A loser is a person who who can't spell and post on the internet "loose lose". A winner is a person who gets a brand new softball facility built, locker rooms remodeled in the pit, dedicated court for volleyball, academic center for athletes, oh wait, A BRAND SPANKING NEW FOOTBALL STADIUM. I have never thought that R.V was an "idiot". If you think that Dr. B. did not have her hands on this sweet deal that Shanice got, you are crazy.1 point

How about a few current successful head coaches? Ronnie Hearne, Head Coach, Tarleton State, 125-73 in 7 seasons at TSU, 25-5 this year, entered the NCAA DII tournament as the 20th ranked team nationally and made it to the second round last week. Randy Gipson, Northeastern State(OK) Head coach, finished 25-5 this season, ranked 9th nationally going into the NCAA Div II tourny and made it to the second round. 224-114 in 11 straight winning seasons at Northeastern State. And for the young up and coming candidate: Beth Jillson, Head Coach Texas Women's University. I figure she is about 32 years old maybe? She is 62-49 in 4 seasons at TWU, 19-11 this season. Lead TWU to their first ever NCAA Div II berth this year but lost in the first round. Added bonus: Would only need to change office and parking locations. Rick1 point

This past football season, a good friend asked RV about Stephens. His first response was that Bataille demanded that the new women's b-ball coach be a woman. So my friend then says, "Well why didn't you hire Donna Capps?" RV says "you wouldn't believe the demands that Capps made." Really? Capps was an administrator for the Mesquite ISD. Demands? Anyway, if Stephens was forced on RV....why wasn't that the first thing he said. They really should get one story and stick to it. I guess they think we're idiots.1 point

Then how come the week of the interviews for the job....the Vito blog reported that RV and the committee were "wowed" by Stephens. Stephens interviewed on a Tuesday....and the word got out in Vito's blog that the committee was blown away ("wowed was the exact word he used). I told someone when I heard that....that the search was over. This was three days before Capps interviewed. Revisionist history is a great thing.....especially when the one being blamed (Bataille) is no longer here to defend herself.1 point

This was NOT RV's hire. He was pressured to make this hire by then President Batille. Coach V had another candidate ready to select, but was told "no" and that he needed to make this hire! Sorry, but that is the word I have been given by more than one source over a fairly long period of time. I really don't think this gets laid at the doorstep of Coach V. Yes, he is the AD and maybe could or should have said "no" to Prez B, but word was that you just didn't say "no" to Prez B if you wanted to keep your job or not have life made fairly miserable for you along the way and have every decision made questioned and approvals stalled. Now, do I know this to be 100% true...no, as I was not involved in the process. I am only repeating what I have been told by numerous sources within and outside the athletic dept. and around the UNT campus and will admit to such here and now. So, yes, call it rumor as I cannot confirm as 100% factual. But, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...well....and if several folks you trust tell you the same thing at different times.......just sayin' Either way, this is a good day for the women's basketball team and opens up the very real possibility that women's basketball at UNT will start seeing much better days, bigger crowds, more interest from recruits and many more wins. Can't wait. GO MEAN GREEN!1 point

Not true. The most recent poll I can find shows that only 31% believe that. That's about the same percentage who believe in astrology, the same percentage of meteorologists that believe in man-made global warming, an the same percentage who believe the Stimulus Plan has helped the economy.1 point

Okay, here is the roster from the official UNT web-site. Some of you want a new subject, well here it is. Who is going start next year? Who is going to make a move to be a viable back-up? Who is probably never going to contribute? Does anyone know about any walk-ons that will be making themselves known during spring ball? Do any of the height/weight stats need to be changed? Who did you see standing on the sideline this last fall that doesn't appear on this roster? I'll get started. I consistently saw someone with the name LONG on his jersey, and he wore #63... which doesn't appear on this roster. Does anyone know who that young man might be, and what position he plays? Is he a potential contributer next year? Here's another question. Will Drew Miller (#24) remain at TE or will he play LB, which is what he was playing when he walked on. We've got a LOT of guys listed as playing TE, and we need all the 6'1" X 244 LB's that we can get. Please comment/discuss. 97 Abbe, Richard DT 6-4 357 Fr. I really think you need to look up the definition of socialism. Then get back with us. Oh, what the hell, I'll do it for you : 1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. 2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory. 3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles. I'm guessing you are going with #3?0 points

Have we worked up a matrix of her free periods and whether she works A or D lunch? I'd hate to miss the opportunity to talk live while Texas or Houston have her on the phone. I know she's popular with a group of folks and I respect what she did at UTA, but being the better choice than what we had shouldn't be the only qualification.0 points
