I hear there is excellent parking in the neighborhood adjacent to the stadium. Just park in the streets or peoples' driveways if needed and walk to the game.6 points

I'm thinking the two are very much not related. The lack of advertising in Texas Monthly may have something to do with the University's priorities in advertising, but a float in a parade? C'mon... this is more along the lines of an Alumni Association thing. To blame the University for not having a stupid float in a parade is ridiculous.5 points

JJ does not know how good he has it here, he can underachieve with a senior-laden team and the fans will be happy because he got 20 wins. If he gets out-coached by Sun Belt Coaches he will be in trouble at a bigger conference. Let him take the offers though, if he does not truly want to be here especially with the class he has coming in then so be it. The grass is not greener on the other side, only the money is green and there is more of it for a short period of time.5 points

Just FYI...the teams have been announced for the first ever ANNUAL GMG.COM BB CLASSIC! Go to the blog portion of the game thread and see which team you are on or which team you will be cheering for on the 26th! ALSO...We have an autographed football...autographed by the Mean Green football coaching staff...to auction off (silent auction) at the game and after event party...bids will start at $25...you do not have to be present to win and you do not have to be playing in the game or watching the game to bid. If you want to bid and will not be playing or attending, just let me know your top bid and I will bid for you...I will not go to your TOP unless necessary. BIDDING STARTS at $25 and bids must be increased by a min. of $1.00...all bids must be in round dollars. A bid sheet will be available at the game and after event party...BE THE FIRST to have a UNT Football coaching staff autographed football highlighted by none other than HC Dan McCarney himself! Ok, I don't really know if you would be the first one, but it sounds good so I am going to go with it! PM me if you want me to bid for you during the event...if you are going to be present, please do your own bidding! This is going to be FUN!2 points

As soon as they show up there in those dime store uniforms.... mission accomplished.2 points

This University cant even round up the money to buy its basketball team into a meaningless post season tournament.... You really think its gonna shell out $600 for a float?2 points

The brochure is excellent and clearly sets out the ticket allocation procedures. I don't know how anyone could bitch about the objectivity and fairness of the process...although I am sure there will be someone who feels shat upon. I ponied-up what I was comfortable in doing, and what I have done for more than a few years now, and I'll let the chips fall where they may as far as points go. If I fall lower in the pecking order it would be because someone wrote a bigger check and that would be all green and all good!2 points

Technically they're all in...no such thing as a play in. Even so...I still disagree. I think all league champions should automatically be "in" -- and that all the opening round games should be bubble teams.2 points

My good pal Mike Doocy will be breaking down the bracket with Johnny Jones tonight at 10 p.m. on Fox 4. Just thought I would give you guys the heads up if you're interested.1 point

...is that we must trust them. Today, only three threads with posts, and we're less than 10 days from the beginning of spring practices. Things have been real tensed up around here since the waning of the Dickey Era and through the entire Dodge Era. With not so many daily threads or fights, we seem to be in a weird zone of Mean Green Peace. I hope it's worth it. I think this staff will do great things. No...I think this staff will get the players to do great things; better things than we've ever seen around here in a long time.1 point

I would say any team that wins its league shouldn't be required to play an extra game. The NCAA takes conference champs and then the next 37 at larges. At larges, by definition are only "selected" -- wheras Champions have already played their way in by winning their league.1 point

Before we go off the rails on advertising, I think that there is something to consider here. Are these ads effective? Do they actually gain enough to offset the cost? I have discussed this before on other forms of advertising. There needs to be some research dollars spent to determine if a particular ad placement is even worth the money. Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't mean that it is actually effective for them either. I would rather the school advertise smart than have them just throw money out there so we call all have a warm fuzzy feeling about a page in a magazine.1 point

Don't forget a quick strafing run on Johnny Jones and his inability to play or beat Drexel.1 point

After being swept by ULL yesterday, our ladies won 8-5 today. That's a huge win....way to go Mean Green!1 point

Jank did not quit, he was fired and did not take it well. Simon was also terminated, where are you getting your information? Only coaches to move on from NT in decades were Jerry Moore and Hayden Fry in football. Spika quit as basketball coach after Rust was made AD and Harry Miller took a job at another school after only one year as basketball coach. There was a woman's bb coach who left for A & M and Judy Nelson who left after her husband was fired. JJ has been here a long time in coaches' terms, I hope he stays longer; but he had very mixed results this year. He got the 20 wins, a good accomplishment at NT even though the conference was weak and so was most of the oc schedule. He led the team to a great end of season run particularly with the shape of the team at that point. He however failed to have the breakout year I and others thought this team would be capable of. He failed to add anything to a strong senior nucleus that would have made this team stronger and had a devastating mid year slump. There is no doubt that JJ has been a great coach for NT and resurrected a team that was at its low after Trilli. Five consecutive 20 year win seasons is great for a program like NT. On paper he has the best recruiting class since the Robbins Tubbs area. I really don't think JJ is going anywhere unless he get the big offer with the success he has at NT and the recruits he has coming in. He is playing the negotiation cards now, and I wish him luck.1 point

Hmmm...maybe my memory is off, but I seem to remember Simon being very pissed that he was fired and replaced by a Buick as we were returning to 1A, and I also thought that Coach Jankovich was pushed out in favor of Trilli. Last "quitter" I recall in the two major men's sports was Moore to Tech, but again I could be wrong.1 point

The punies got a nice top of the page article this morning in the DMN about their hosting of Oral Roberts on Wednesday. Not bad pub if you ask me. Could of been us, and we could have finally gotten our chance to kick some puny butt and officially claim the title of Metroplex BB champs in front of a predominantly MeanGreen crowd down at Moody. Too bad we're either too good, too poor, too disinterested, or too whatever to play in the CIT. Too bad.1 point

One thing that I heard that I really liked is the Mean Green Club parking next to Victory RH is no more festival parking!1 point

The only way Mitchell does not stay with this team before his eligibility is up will be because of academics! (or some other issue) He's All-Conference material now but needs too much work in all areas to even think about the next level. He's not a first round pick (with guaranteed money)which should be the goal of any kid coming out early. He's not even a lock to even make a pro roster. D-League or Europe is highly probable at the point. Go Mean Green!1 point

UNT beat TCU 1-0 in front of a really large crowd at Pizza Hut Park. Lots of youth teams walked over from their respective fields to watch the match. Both schools heavily recruit the metroplex, so it's a nice spring "bragging rights" victory. In the first half UNT had a 20 mph wind at their back and scored early (about 5 min into the game), when Kelsey Perlman knocked in a loose ball in front of the net. UNT controlled play in the wind aided first half. In the second half, play was much more balanced with TCU having more shots on goal (majority of them from 30 yards out) and a few more corner kicks. Our defense played really well and goal keeper Haley Newsom made a couple nice saves to preserve win. Overall the girls looked in great form and continue to play well in the spring.1 point

GMG Guide: "Quitter" - a player who leaves North Texas before their time here is done. Not a personal attack. Just a statement of fact of a player's status for any team we care about. "Mean Green Athlete" - includes players who transferred to UNT to play for the only team that matters. I hope that clears things up a bit. Reposted for those who need it.1 point

There's prestige if you win, and not everyone does not care to watch a`CBI/CIT game featuring North Texas. Other than SBC games, our schedule this year was mainly populated by teams at the bottom of their conferences, and it would be nice to see how well we stack up against a group of pretty decent teams nationwide.1 point

Very few really good low post players in the NBA anymore. Matbe not a good move for a 6'6" kid, but anyone 6'9" or more that could come to college with a low post game already developed beyond high school, and continued that development with a couple of years in college, would be far more valuable to the NBA than another 6'9" small forward with an average outside shot by NBA standards. Just sayin...1 point

This self imposed probation very well could derail the Pony Express' drive to a national championship in 2014. Also, it could really impact attendance. The numbers could plummet from the 500 person fan base to a mere dozen. Anyway, it's SMU, so who cares.1 point

We have been paying the teachers to teach .... unfortunately, since all the states take money from the federal government the teachers teach what the fed govt. tells them to teach. our classrooms are nothing more than social experiements and no longer havens of education. case in point: public education v. private schools. unfortunately, the public eduction system is full of kids who don't want to learn...looooosers. get these kids, who don't want to learn, and send them to some alternative school to learn a trade before they become pimps and whores and leach off the government welfare teat. as for the teachers....there are probably a bunch that need to be fired along with some administrators and school boards.1 point

WOW! 5-10K UNT Alums in that parade group? Really? How did you come up with that number? That's impressive, indeed. And, to think if those 5-10K would have actually joined the Alumni Association as dues paying members, the Alumni Assoc. may have just had the "free cash" to help sponsor such a parade float. The TOTAL paying membership of the UNT Alumni Assoc. is in the 8000 range...and you say 5,000-10,000 UNT Alums were along that parade route. Just think what might could be accomplished if those alums supported the UNT Alumni Association with as little as the $45 annual dues cost. WOW! A lifetime membership is only $500 ($600 for joint). You don't have to expect to live too many years to make that a great deal...and you can set up a payment plan. Do you go to the parade every year? Are you willing to take up the challenge and be the fundraising and work committee organizer for the event next year? I'm game to help. I know you personally do a lot to support UNT, so I am definitely not calling you out or anything like that...but you seem to have a passion for this event and think UNT should be represented...I do not disagree, but can't step in to be the "front man" for this event. It needs more of a Dallas presence. Can this be done for next year? You say it is $600 plus the cost of the float...if the float isn't too elaborate it sure seems doable to me...what do you say? EDIT: OK, I see I got a -1 for this post. Please do tell me what was worthy of a -1 here? You can PM me if you would like. Please do tell. Did something I wrote land a little too close to home for someone?0 points

This seems to come up every year after the Dallas St. Pat's Day Parade. I wonder if such an effort is worth the time and dollars spent? I wonder how many of the alums watching the parade from UNT are actual dues paying members of the Alumni Association? I would bet that both OU and N. Dame have many many more dues paying members than does UNT. I would also guess that both floats were done by local area chapters and funded by the local area chapters donors. I am, however, simply guessing about that. What I do know is that the UNT Alumni Assoc. is placing its precious few disposable dollars into the construction of the new UNT Alumni Pavilion being built alongside the new stadium. BTW, was TCU, SMU and UTA represented with floats in the parade? Some of this is about resources of both the monetary and personnel variety. Both of which are severely lacking for UNT's Alumni Association. In fact, I am constantly amazed at all the great stuff the Alumni Association is doing these days with such a small budget and small staff. If memberships were to anywhere near represent the alumni base UNT has in the DFW area, such projects as this just might not be that impossible to pull off. I would love to see UNT represented in the parade as I am sure everyone here would. It's just priorities and money and personnel. If anyone wants to take this project on for next year and start a fundraising effort and volunteer committee/workforce I would be happy to participate. I think greenjoe has said he would help as well. Any takers to start the ball rolling as fundraising/committee head?0 points

Each month when I read a Texas Monthly, I see ads for Texas State-San Marcus, TCU, UTSA, UTA, SFA, and some of the other Texas universities, but no North Texas ad. So not having a St. Pat Day parade float representing the 3rd largest university in the state does not come as a shock to me.0 points

hmmm, sounds like par for the course still. Just sad that the school just does not seem to get it with 100K alumni living in the region.0 points

Then what the Hell is the reason genius? This is an opinion board, and it would be great to hear your Einsteinian opinion, since I seriously doubt that anyone is going to come out and say that the school is to poor to play.0 points

There are plenty of legitimate reasons why the team might not want to participate in the CBI/CIT. However, I fear that the real reason is simply that the athletic department can't afford to pay. I'm sure they all know that an NIT bid isn't going to happen, and they only mentioned it to create the illusion that the school is making a conscious decision rather than facing economic realities.0 points

Really well done brochure. Have to hand it to the Athletic dept. folks. Nicely done...this thing had to cost a pretty penny to create, print and mail. NICE JOB! This should really help folks to understand the process a good bit more clearly. Thanks to the Athletic dept. for getting this in everyone's hands. Big time brochure! I like!0 points

That sounded like my 6th grade band when the director brought in some dumbed down version of a Pearl Jam song for us to play. You could make out the obvious parts but the whole thing sounded like complete garbage. I'd be absolutely embarrassed were our band to sound like that. Terrible. Also.... I'd expect the Green Brigade to be playing deep cuts rather than tired radio singles.0 points
