  1. I'd have left town Saturday night. Time to come on home, as it will be a much tougher drive into the sun with tears in your eyes.

  7. Those FAU dancers were throwing daggers with their eyes at us when we started imitating their cheers when North Texas made a free throw. Suck it, FAU.

  9. . --Very good post...So many of the younger alums don't realize just how good North Texas has been in the past. In the late 60's we were producing far more pro-athletes than the SWC schools were .. I maybe wrong a bit but I think one of the football teams contained NINE future NFL players including Joe Green.. In basketball the MVC was the best conference... not the ACC [which was still all-white] At Christmas my senior year 5 of the top-ten were in the same conference as North Texas... the Missouri Valley. UCLA was the best team of that era but wasn't in a powerful conference.... the MVC was the best one.. ---I have no answer but our alums and students need to have more pride in our university, its accomplishments (not just sports), and its history and traditions. ..

  16. Since the first title run by the 2006-2007 team, JJ is 12-2 in the SBC Tournament. We all question the man, some more than others, but one thing you have to say is - he seems to get the best out of his kids in March. That is a sterling record right there.

  18. If we believe we're a growing program lets act like it. A big time win isn't one to get us into the Semi-finals of the conference tourney. Let's save the bodyguard talk to a performance to get us to the big dance or IN the big dance.

  19. the teachers teach what the fed govt. tells them to teach. --- Total BS -- I worked in schools for 30 years and now teach college classes. Texas and each school district even adopt the books they want to use. You are right about the alternate school part... but that takes money and this state has been cutting trade type programs... not increasing them. If politicians really wanted to improve education --1.. get rid of those expensive state tests as they exist now -- the first one (TABS -basic skill test) was a good idea. 2. Develop or teach programs for those who are really not academic students and are not going to colleges ..ie. teach a trade or skills leading to one etc.... but that costs money.... and our current guys in Austin want to cut taxes despite we are already 50th of the states of spending per capita and may be 50th in per capita taxes as well. ---The priority is very few expenses and almost no state taxes.... Many third world countries have very low taxes too. Oddly the taxes cut in Texas are for business... and not ones we all really pay...sales, gasoline, etc. Check your total property tax BIll (not tax rate --evaluations have really climbed at state urging) It likely has been climbing as the state funds programs even less and lessforcing local "boards" to raise theirs.... that and tuition which has tripled since 2003 because of the same thing.... less state funding.. I am very conservative... I think you should collect ( or earn ) enough to pay essential bills ... including education... but find a way to fund them and not try to STAY 50th in spending and cheat students and education in general.... while adding to the unemployment rolls by firing 1000's of teachers. They also pay taxes... or would if they had an income. ..

  22. Everybody realize that the Muts are the only seeded team to win. Both division champions are gone, and NT at least won't have played more games than WKU.

  24. Work prevented me from going to the tournament this year, but I have been listening to the games. I think this may be JJ's best coaching of the year. He definately has the team motivated. Both games started with us being in a hole, we were shorthanded on the bench, and in foul trouble. Yet, we finish the game with toughness and without our players fouling out. Also, there has been an important player off the bench--Knox last night and Edwards tonight. Good coaching keep backup players ready. Of course, the credit has to go to the team as well--they are playing hard and not getting discouraged after being behind at the beginning of games. They are playing like the winners they are! GO MEAN GREEN....two down, two to go!

  27. I agree. I almost died when the the team slumpped in conference play. But they got their minds back on center just in time. Johnny is doing a great job and needs to keep team winning one game at a time to get to the Big show again!

  28. The last 4-5 games he has been arguably our most important player. He scored big when he had to against Denver. He's our best perimeter defender. He's been boarding lately. Clutch as hell...reminds me of Rich Young.

  32. Absolutely great win, FAU can now have more time to enjoy all those Belt trophies they got pre-game. Only regret, I hated JJ going to freeze at end. Smart basketball, but I would have loved for Thompson to break the conference tournament scoring record. Good play by all, another good defensive game.

  35. I agree with your points on spirit, but just because we are playing sports a long time doesn't mean there was a committment by the school administration to make the athletic programs the best that they could be. That is a fairly recent development that is just now starting to pay off.

  41. We do have a history before this regime and all before it. If you are a true fan of the Mean Green, athletic directors and head coaches will come and go but you are the constant that will still be here. I can go even further back to the MVC and seeing John Savage matched against Oscar Robertson in the old pit. North Texas Basketball in the MVC made the SWC a joke. We beat A$M by 20 points at home when I was a student. The local privates wanted no part of the NT FB teams of the mid to late 60's . The University of Arkansas stole a game in Fayetteville from the Mean Green in 1967 on a called trap of a Steve Ramsey to Ron Shanklin pass. Later Chuck Dicus, the DB for Arkansas admitted it was a clean catch and the refs were protecting the SWC from what would be viewed by the "great unwashed" as a terrific upset. In those teams of the 60's not only Joe Greene, but Cedric Hardeman, Willie Parker, Steve Ramsey, Ron Shanklin, Chuck Beatty, and others would distinguish themselves for years in the NFL, many more than the local privates sent at that time. Even Dandy Don Meredith admitted on MNF that "he was sure glad when he was at SMU that they never had to play North Texas State". This statement was made while he viewed Joe Greene, Ron Shanklin, and Chuck Beatty all playing in the starting line up of the Pittsburg Steelers. We have always had an inferiority complex at NT. This must change now. Denton must change now---all its previous excuses for non-support are lame. Growth is coming up I-35 E and W at a staggering pace and Denton is drawn into the metroplex like it or not. Get with the program "little d" you have had a gold mine of a university in your back yard for decades--Act like you appreciate now and ongoing.

  42. I get that it can reduce costs in the long run a great deal, so I see how that works. But I also wonder if this is the right time for that. I don't think it's a great idea when DISD (which is problematic to begin with) is about to lay off teachers, increase class sizes, and make things generally more difficult for everyone involved. That said, I still think the real problem with education isn't the education system. I think the problem is mom and dad at home who see the student for far more time than the teacher ever will.

  43. I wouldn't touch a thing with the UNT pep band. They look like a bunch of crazy student fans that happened to pick up instruments and play better than most pep bands you hear...and have fun doing it. That's part of their charm and what makes them fun to watch, IMHO.

  46. I feel the majority of freshmen do look at the basketball hierarchy more than how they fit in. Evidence of this is the fact that we have 3 (should've been 4) D-1 transfers from major conference schools on our roster. I don't look at NT as a last resort...but it isn't on the radar of top recruits yet either...and specifically Thompson who seemed to have Wichita State higher on his board than us. Now...I'm not saying I think Thompson will prove to be a spare...I just didn't see TT as being the impact player next season, so all i was attempting to do was get the view of those who felt he would be a starter next season
