Can I just throw this in: How can anyone quantify the amount of national publicity that JJ has gotten the school (twice). When you get into the NCAA tourney, your school's name is in papers and on millions of NCAA brackets that people fill out. So how much is that worth? Lots. So all in all, I don't think you could say our program costs the school money. It probably makes the school money....but once again there's no way to quantify it. (I do know of students who've chosen NT because they saw us in a bowl game or in the NCAA tourney, for example).6 points

There was a time I would have supported the alumni assoc logo as the main graphic identity of the university. Not anymore. Many years ago I noted that the star was the best graphic element we had going. Unfortunately, A&M since has adopted it. It is on their basketball court. I suppose they are trying to get away from the 'A&M'. Also the alumni logo appears derivative of the 'old' aTm logo. The new eagle logo is an excellent graphic symbol for the university. I hope that anyone pining away for the alumni logo is not detracting from adoption of the eagle logo as a pervasive symbol. If you don't like eagles you're unAmerican and I hope one flies off with your little dog.3 points

Folks, Saturday's game against Denver is Senior Night and the last home game for our seniors, both men and women...On the men's side we say goodbye and well done to: Dominique Johnson George Odufuwa Shannon Shorter Camerson Spencer Triston Thompson, and Josh White. For the ladies, I believe the only senior to be playing her last game is; Denetra Kellum. Let's pack the Super Pit Saturday to say good-bye and "thanks" to OUR seniors. They are definitely OUR seniors and have represented us very well as well as being great ambassadors for UNT in general. I hope the students turn out in a big way to send their fellow student-athletes off to the Sunbelt Tournament on a high note. having a big turnout of their fellow students would mean a great deal to these seniors as well as seeing a BIG alumni and fan base filling the seats in the Super Pit! Please do what you can to be in attendance Saturday. GO MEAN GREEN...Congrats to all our seniors! Well done. BEAT DENVER!2 points

And incase I didn't get to thank you and all the other NT alumn who supported me and the team and university, thank you so much. I love North Texas and will defend it at all costs. It is a part of me and I will always be a part of it. I shed blood for this university in the past and I still bleed green today. I love all of you and I love the Mean Green. My period of life in Denton was one of my life's most important, and I will help alumni and the university whenever I get a chance. Thank you all. Blake Burruss2 points

Suck it up? Yeah, that'll work. Of course there is waste and that waste should be gotten rid of, but the budgets proposed by the Texas House and Senate will cut muscle and bone, not just fat. You're talking about firing thousands of teachers at a time when the population of Texas - including school-aged childen - is growing at a dizzying rate. Your talking about cutting state support for public schools when school distrits are under judicial orders to improve service to historically neglected citizens. Those costs will have to be met - if not by the state then locally. Decreased state support for medical services will simply move the costs to local governments and the services will be more expensive and less effective. Decreased state support for prisons mean more criminals will be on the streets earlier. Decreased state support for higher education means the gains Texas universities has made over the last few decades will be put at risk. Cut wasteful programs. Get rid of the PR staff for the TEA and the legislative liasons for UT. But at the same time develop state revenue strategies that will take care of the legitimate functions of state government - educating our children, provding for public safety, protecting our environment. We're citizens of the greatest state in the union. It's time we started acting like it instead of a bunch of short-sighted, selfish Yankees. God bless Texas.2 points

Looks like we need to hit the rainy day fund, cut the fat, and revisit the issue. Cutting teachers is not the answer, unless you are a douche-bag legislature that is too lazy to find alternatives and scared to use available funds/raise taxes in fear of YOUR JOB. At least, "Texas is open for business". Maybe we need fully privatized education; you know, so we don't reduce any private sector payrolls.2 points

Agreed...these seniors deserve our thanks and our support Saturday night. In our "what have you done for me lately" society, it is easy to remember the last few months of disappointing basketball. But we also need to remember that these guys have moved UNT up a notch or two over the last 4 years and deserved to be remembered for that as well. So, everyone come on out and support the seniors! GO MEAN GREEN....2 points

WHY IS THIS SURPRISING TO ANY OF YOU???? Craig Miller has been a front running OU "t-shirt alumnus" for years. He bags on his alma mater at every possible chance. He's not the kind of alumnus we need to reach out to...he's the kind we need to prove wrong! He's not gonna come around regardless of what we say or do and we shouldn't continue to wast the negative energy getting disappointed or angry about what a douche with a microphone has to say. If NT takes care of NT's business his rantings will fall on deaf ears. Simple as that.2 points

The current issue of The Sporting News (Feb. 28 issue) has their off-season assessment of every FBS team. Here's what they say about Mean Green football: "With new Coach Dan McCarney on board, bet on the Mean Green's defensive line to make major improvements in a hurry. Staff changes mean this program might have the best long-term forecast in the league."1 point

I cannot decide which route I want... Troy and Florida Atlantic or South Alabama and Ark State??? I think I lean toward the USA/ASU route, but that means we lose at Ark-LR... We need all the momentum we can get so I'll pull for a win at Ark-LR, and then wins over Troy and Florida Atlantic.1 point

NT 23 Denver 13 3:46 to go I realize Denver plays a slow down attack, but this is still the best our defense has been in some time. Of course, the Pioneers are missing quite a few close shots, but still.1 point

I really don't care what Craig "The weakest link" Miller has to say about UNT. It should be the Dunham and Keefe show, anyway. Miller is pretty much dead weight EVERY morning.1 point

What do you like about UNT? Our Talons can't manage to take care of a cannon or bell. Our shade of green looks like vomit. Our branding/logos are nowhere near up to snuff. We're not using the AC deck the way we should. The pricing of club level seats in the new stadium blows. We don't demand enough of our basketball program. Our Alumni Association listens not to our most important fans opinions. I'm sure I'm leaving more out, but how could anyone care for a university that can't get a single thing right? Edit: We also don't have a good chant for use at football games. We can't figure out how to make out hands look the most like an eagles foot.1 point

Personal slights? I didn't see anyone named in his comments. Is this how you conduct discussion/debate? Because saying that Rick made personal slights is inaccurate, and from my view, is intended to derail/distract from a real discussion.1 point

Referring that participation numbers in the Alumni Association is low and that we as alumni have no pull or say with the university because of those low numbers is a smear? Sounds like fact to me? Rick1 point

You could have done better than that. The logo on the right is one of the Texas A&M logos, if you didn't know. For the record, I like the UNT Alumni Association logo and the SOW, though I still thing the SOW is a little more original...not that it really matters.1 point
-
What's wrong with an open discussion about what Rick is implying? What's wrong with an open discussion about what the alumni association is or isn't doing that has been off-putting to many people? We openly discuss the warts of our University in regards to it's athletic programs (mainly football) why is the UNT exes exempt?1 point

My reading comprehension is just fine and I know what this is, it's a waste of money, and my point is, we need the things I suggested(and I'm sure there are a multitude of other things others could come up with like i did) before the university spends another cent towards anything to do with "Branding". Guys, we can't continue bagging on the opinions of those who don't fully support our program. Those opinions are the ones we need to be thinking about when decisions are made. Guys like George will always defend UNT. Guys like Craig have an unbiased vantage point and can tell it like it is. I can appreciate George for his love of the school. But I can also place value on Craig's thoughts because they come from the pool of UNT alumni we need to start backing us.1 point

The main reason that you might need permission to use the logo is if you are going to produce something for sale/profit with the image on it.1 point
-
Just a question...you need them why? You might want to check with the alumni association about their use on anything. I am pretty sure they have a copyright on the logo (or something like that). BTW...it is a great logo and I'd like to see it on many more items, so go for it...just be sure you are not infringing on any copyrights or anything like that. This intellectual property thing can get a bit tricky at times and people do something quite innocently and then they find out they have stepped over some line...I get it...I've done that been there with the logo thing. Good luck.1 point

Good...not great trade, but the people freaking out about this are basically the ones you expect -- those still pissed Marty Turco isn't in goal and Mike Modano's handsome mug isn't flapping down the ice on the third line for all to see with 8 goals and 15 assists with the season winding down. When you spend less on defense than all but two teams in hockey, your blueline is going to suck. I was a little bummed we didn't use Neal to start a conversation with the Blues before Eric Johnson got traded, but the Avs ultimately could give them more because they had a defensive prospect to give back -- which we don't. If you have any warm feelings for Niksanen, I can only assume you've never watched him play his position by himself. He can't make an outlet pass and he can't keeep anyone out of the crease. He has one less assist than the freaking goalie. He may have started strong in that last playoff run, but the fact that we were able to shed his salary is a plus (even if it's annoying to talk salary when the team is willingly $10M under the cap because the owner sucks.) Robidas is the best D guy on the team -- and he should be a 3. No one trade was going to completely solve 5 seasons of total neglect for the position. Throw in Neal's slumps, conditioning issues (why do you think he started fast and then diddled himself the last 2-3 months each season) and unwillingness to play a consistent two-way game, and he was the most expandable to go. He'll do well with Crosby and I hope -- like Turco and a few others who had to go -- he wins a cup or two. Meanwhile, this opens the top line for Benn (who is a real superstar) and he can keep growing into a complete, dominant player. I know I'll be in the minority on this, but unless they finalize a sale in the next two days, trade Richards for at least another top 4 D-man and a RW. Maybe you can sign him in the offseason, but the rebuild will go a lot quicker if they keep redistributing resources into the blueline. What they've done this year is the equivalent of the 2004 Rangers making a run at contending despite what was a god awful pitching rotation. The only solution is to build it from the back up. Oh, and we should have drafted Fowler and I will always be pissed we didn't.1 point

I read that line "We play in the Sun Belt" often, which I take as "this league is up for grabs every year". The only problem with that line of thinking is that it is fairly inaccurate. The bowl teams from the SBC have been: Troy, MTSU, and F_U over the course of the last 5 years. FIU just got their first bid this year, while FAU dropped off (could be similar to UNT's drop to oblivion in 2005 if the Owls aren't careful). I know that ULM and ULL have had years of late where they finished at that SBC Fabulous overall record of 6-6, but they each got no bowl invite. Maybe 6-6 UNT would get a bowl bid, but I am more focused on the idea that I want to see us get to 4 wins in a season, which would mark the first year above 3 wins since 2004. "We play in the Sun Belt", but I think we have a ways to go to get to where 6 wins is achievable, much less 7 or more, which is what the SBC champ will have. Troy, FIU, and MTSU will still be good teams in the SBC. I know we beat MTSU at their place last year, but I don't think that we will be favored against them this year, with our QB situation and DLine issues at play right now. I don't doubt for a second that this staff is the best UNT has ever had in the last 30 years, and I think we will see big improvements as the year goes on, as well as on the recruiting front, but I also think that if we finish 4-8 or 5-7, that will be serious progress around here. I hope that folks don't lose sight of this, even with a brand new stadium finally at hand.1 point

So, our season goes the way Lance Dunbar goes? Eggs in one basket, huh? What happens if Lance gets injured??1 point

Usually, it takes at least two years to get a program turned around. Now, SMU was able to do it quicker with June Jones in 2009, as was Dennis Franchione when he went to TCU back in 1997, but generally it takes a while. Cristobal had to build up his program at FIU and now they are bowl winners. I just think that this year's record is kind of a mulligan. Just like Cristobal at FIU, McCarney is having to take over an absolutely beaten down program and its gonna take time just to convince them that they can be winners here. That sounds like we aren't raising expectations, but I do believe that year 2 is when we should expect a winning record and to compete for a bowl berth. Coach Mac is going to have to find and develop a QB and entire defensive front. Other than the OLine, those other two areas on your team are the hardest to build. Its gonna take some time. My guess is that we will probably go 0-fer in OOC again, but we will be able to win 4-5 SBC games. Right now, ULL, WKU, and Ark State are games I think we win, and I think we will win at least another game against the next tier up in the SBC (FAU, MTSU, ULM). I think games at Troy and at FIU are probably out of reach right now, but, just as I want to see in the OOC games (sans Bama) is being able to compete. We might get beat by UH and Tulsa in OOC, but hopefully we can be competitive. At this juncture, I think that will help recruiting just as much as moving up a tier in the SBC would.1 point

I have to say that education is the one area where we should be spending... it should be government's #1 expenditure. HOWEVER, that funding should come with certain requirements ensuring we are the best in the world at educating our people. That also means we should allow parents to send their kids to private and/or religious schools with vouchers equivalent to the amount of annual per student expenditures. Competition ensures everyone is doing their best.1 point

Wow, who knew Texas sucked so bad?! It's the same story from the same liberal Texas Democrats every year. Texas blows. We're the worst in so so many areas.... But I can cherry-pick statistics too. According to CNBC Texas ranks: #1 in transportation and infrastructure #1 in economy #4 in technology and innovation #7 in access to business capital #8 in overall cost of living #1 overall in top business states #1 in the nation in child support enforcement #1 in 2010 for economic growth1 point

Complete Bulsh here. This is just a way for a municipality to impose another tax on citizens of other communities. Nevermind that you might work in that community and pay sales taxes on numerous items that you purchase in the community. This is nothing more than a sorry attempt by a city government to make first responders the bad guy while they hide inside city hall. Taxes are already paid for police to do their job. What's next, a tax for a police response to an armed robbery if you aren't a resident of the community? How about a vehicle burglary tax for non-residents? Hey, come eat at our restaurants, but if our high crime rate strikes you, well, that's your problem, and here is another tax on top of losing your property (or in the case of an accident, having to repair yur vehicle). This is just complete crap, and a good way to keep me from spending any of my money in the City of McKinney (like I ever get up there anyway). If you really believe departments like Fort Worth, Dallas, and Arlington do not put pressure EVERY DAY on their patrol officers to write tickets, you are sorely misinformed. They do, and it is completely about revenue (We are not talking about motorcycle cops, whose only job is to write tickets. Obviously, if they aren't writing tickets, they aren't doing their job). It has just become accepted by the rank and file.1 point

Not semantics, but basic civics. Sorry you are unable to grasp basic concepts like this. I really am. BTW, they have not always been semi-military, certainly not if you go back to the first shire reeves (where the word sherriff comes from).1 point
-
How does that make them a member of the armed forces and not civilian? They are not military (though the we could debate whether the current trend towards paramilitary style policing is a good thing) they remain decidedly civilian or they would not be allowed to operate as they currently do under the Constitution.1 point
-
First of all, you would not be a citizen of McKinney as cities in our country do not confer citizenship upon their residents. Similarly, I absolutely hate it when cops refer to non-cops as civilians. All serving police officers are civilians. Even those that are a part of the reserves or National Guard are civilians when not on duty with the military. As far as the service without paying for it you may be partially right, but if I am shopping at McKinney businesses then I am paying sales tax in that city and at least in part paying for the service(s) I would receive. That contribution would be much smaller than if I were a resident in McKinney of course, but I am sure the business community in McKinney can't survive by selling only to McKinney residents.1 point
-
Ticket quotas are illegal, but that doesn't mean police administrations don't pressure their officers to write tickets to "curb accidents." The results of not giving into these pressures are bad performance reviews. The pressure is not just reserved for the STEP program, but to regular patrol officers who work a beat. Be mad at the administrations, not the officers. Odds are, if the officers aren't on a motorcycle, they would rather be doing anything else than writing you a ticket.1 point
