  1. FIU will be a Thursday night game on September 1 FIU - 9/1 Alabama - 9/17 ULL - 10/15 ASU - 10/29 Troy - 11/12 http://pps.unt.edu/s...lineCharter.pdf Tulsa is not on this list, probably because we will take a bus.

  2. Here is the bracket heading into tonight. We have the possibility of being seeded anywhere from W2-W5. If we get seeded W2 (the least likely) we will play the winner of ULM and WKU/MTSU. If we do not get a bye, our first round opponent will likely be either Troy, USA, or FIU, although if WKU collapses late, they could be a first round opponent as well. The teams in Red are locked into their seed. In my opinion, the W5 seed has the easiest path of any non-bye seed right now.

  3. Rick really needs to travel back in time to a place where he can be happy. So tired of reading complaints about this and that and how much better things used to be. By the way, the kelly green looks so much better than the forest green. We looked great on tv last year.

  4. Again, this is the Sun Belt, not the Big 12. Not near the mountain to climb. Plus, you didn't have the benefit of seeing how poorly coached this team was the last 3 1/2 years. It would be nice to coach without expectations. Just ask Todd Dodge about his 1st 3 years here. Those days need to be over. Now.

  5. We had a great time...and a big surprise! Had about 20 for the lunch today and the UNT Athletic Staff were great as usual. Special thanks to Kendra, Matt, Cooper and the rest. We showed the video from the football banquet. And, then who walks in: No less then Coach Mac! He was on his way to another meeting, but spent 10 magic minutes and left everyone fired up! It was a grand day and we hope to have another one soon. Thanks for asking! Rick

  6. I was a bit disappointed that LSU canceled their spring game verse UNT last weekend. The tournament replaced the game with a match verse the University of Houston. Every school except LSU played two games. First, spring matches provide an opportunity for the coaching staff to tinker with formations, evaluate players and get a general feel for the squad heading into next year. Our ladies lost to Rice 1-0 but looked very sharp at times and controlled the match most of the second half. Note: Rice loan goal did not come against our starting defensive back line. In the second match UNT tied University of Houston 1-1 in a pretty evenly played match. Our goal came on a header (Kelsey Hodges) off a corner kick. Haley Newsom played really strong at keeper which was great to see as the Mean Green have big shoes to fill with the graduation of Mandy Hall this year. The terrible weather only allowed our girls a week of practice outdoors (only 3-4 days), but the girls conditioning looked pretty good. Scoring was at a minimum not only for UNT but for all the other schools as well, i.e #4 OK State 1 LSU 0; OK State 1 Rice 0; TX Tech 2 SFA 1 were a few matches I watched). Our play against Rice (3rd in C-USA) and their result against #4 in the nation OK-State should make for an interesting match this coming Saturday in Stillwater. GMG

  7. Rick...that is great...and what a super idea you had. I personally appreciate the effort you went to to make this happen. I know it takes time, talent and treasure to do these sort of things, but you said it when you said "we had a great time". No excuses, no complaining just stepping up and trying to be part of the solution to moving UNT upward and onward. The only thought I have is "why in the heck didn't I think of this type of event?" Ha! I would have loved to have been there for the event, and I hope you got lots of new season ticket apps and Mean green Club members. Great to hear Coach Mac stopped by...this guy is the real deal! Thanks, Rick...I'd love to buy you a beer sometime just to say "thanks". You name the time and place. GO MEAN GREEN!

  10. Agree 100%. The kelly green looks great and shows up quite well on TV. It may not be perfect, but the "Sink Navy" shirt shown and dismissed as an imperfect example was printed on what was said to be the exact approved green shade at the time. If it wasn't perfect, it was as close as we could get. And, through that effort several students received scholarships to continue their education at UNT. It's a little sad for me to see those who support UNT to keep knocking people who get off their rear ends and try to do things to help. Volunteers are just that...volunteers, who give up a lot of their free time and money to help a cause they believe in...like UNT. What they do may not be perfect in every one's eyes, but no volunteer that I have ever worked with EVER sets out to do anything but help by giving of their time, talent and treasure. BTW...new volunteers are always welcome. You too can become known as one of the "he or she's who will be blamed". Ha! Really, what you will get out of it is a lot of new and wonderful friendships and the knowledge that you have helped by being part of the solution. Pass it forward.....

  13. Before anyone goes too far with this one... I think there's been some confusion. Coleman's recruiting and potential freshman impact in 2012 are mentioned in a Q&A type article that also mentions our 2011 recruiting class. I can't find anything, there or elsewhere, that indicates he's ever even heard of North Texas. He's from New York, so there isn't the local angle that gave us an in with Tony Mitchell. And his dream schools are Syracuse and North Carolina.

  14. I assume I am in the minority here but I say let the Nike design team that handles Oregon and TCU have complete creative control of the uniform design. I am such a fan of almost 100% of what Oregon and TCU put on the field. I am ready for the -1 votes!

  18. Tune-up for the Houston game? FIU is the preaseson favorite to win the Sun Belt. The FIU game will give us a better picture of what to expect out of the team next year and in all honesty its more important for us to beat FIU than Houston.

  19. In class 15 hours, study for 45 hours, sleep for 8 hours a night still leaves around 50 hours a week to eat, meet an attractive reason to stay in Denton for a few years, and work on basketball. Two rec games a week isn't goint to take away from study time.

  22. The last time we played ASU was really the last tine we were still formidable. Since that night we have had the wheels come off. Can our depleted team get a 'W' in Jonesboro (a bit like ULM starting and ending their losing streak to us)?

  31. I figure if we beat UH, the odds of us winning the conference is pretty good, regardless of what happens against FIU. Of course I'd like to win the conference and go to a bowl game- but we've done all that and it hasn't meant much. We need to beat regional rivals. We need to get buzz about our program in this state. I couldn't even tell you what happened with Sun Belt teams in the bowl games this year, who they played or who won. i know they were 2-1 because I read this board.

  33. Give him a call. He's a [pretty easy to reach guy. If you wait for him to call you, you might just be waiting around awhile as he may not know you want to meet with him. A little initiative in making that first contact might help. Or, become a Mean Green Club member and sign up to be a Volunteer Rep....there may be additional small group meetings in the future. The guy is not hard to find and talk to...really, just set it up. GO MEAN GREEN!

  35. I get where you are coming from, but the win/loss record isn't the only measure of improvement. No doubt the coaches agree with you that it's all about results, but you might be setting yourself up for disappointment if you expect to see a drastically better record in the first year. There is a reason UNT has struggled recently, and I don't think it can ALL be put on coaching. You need to have the players... recruiting is definitely part of coaching, but I'm not sure it is fair to expect Mac and staff to take players that haven't exactly torn up the Sun Belt and go bowling. I'd expect to see clear improvement on the field, but without knowing your roster, I don't know if it is fair to assume the improvement in play will result in more wins. I'd hope so, but wouldn't get all bent if it doesn't happen. You need to have the players. No matter how well a guy is coached he still needs to get to the ball carrier in order to tackle him. It was kind of funny when Mac took over at Iowa State... us fans were really impressed that our defense wasn't missing a gajillion tackles any more. Now our guys were putting the ball carrier down. On his call in show when asked about it, Mac pointed out that the reason we didn't miss many tackles was because we weren't getting anywhere near the ball carrier in the first place. Funny, but true. You can't miss a tackle if you don't get within 5 yards of the guy. We simply weren't fast enough. Coaching can only take a guy so far. Not saying that coaching won't IMPROVE the play on the field next fall, but maybe not enough to effect the record as much as everybody would like. Early in Mac's tenure, i looked for the little things. We quit having receivers running wild and free through our secondary while our db's covered each other. When we DID get to the ball carrier, we tackled him on the first try. We quit turning the ball over. We quit giving up crazy huge return yardage among other improvements. We still lost a lot of games at first but I could see improvement every game. The recruiting picked up, and suddenly these small improvements turned into consistent winning. It took time though. Did Dodge leave Mac a bowl quality roster? I don't know, but if he did, he must have been completely inept last year. No matter how hard Mac tries to fix it, he's pretty much dealing with Dodge's roster this coming fall. So it is what it is for now. Anyway - just throwing my 2 cents out there.

  37. The softball team beat Northwestern State 5-1 and Centenary 11-2 today. They also beat Tennessee Tech last night 5-4. Their record is now back to 5-5 with the losses coming to (score in parentheses): #14 Oregon (12-4) #19 Stanford (5-2) #21 Nebraska (4-2) Oregon State (3-2) Northwestern (8-4) Those may have all been losses, but most were respectable. Our pitching is young right now (with the top 3 pitchers in innings being 1 sophomore and 2 freshmen), so hopefully they can settle in and do really well in the SBC. Louisiana-Lafayette is currently ranked #16, so it will not be easy.

  38. Good response. I want this guy to succeed, I want to team to be spectacular and win. We all do because we love UNT. But lets keep our heads and not say "this guy is the real deal" yet, lets see his product and see if it delivers. Every year we talked about Dodge was improving and how much better we were going to be. Lets see what his team is made of then we can give him his deserved credit.

  42. OUCH! The Spring Football game is set for a Friday and it happens to be the very same Friday that the UNT Alumni Association has its ALUMNI AWARDS DINNER scheduled (the dinner was scheduled long before the game date was announced). man, that's a killer for me as a Alumni Association Board member I will be involved with the dinner that evening. I am assuming here that the spring game will also be an evening kick-off. I cannot imagine it being a day game on a work/school day. I also had hopes of scheduling the GMG.COM flag football game for the day of the spring game to be played prior to the spring game kick-off. Oh, well, the flag football game will go on, just on another date/time. No problem, just hate to miss a great opportunity to have lots more people see the game and/or participate. I hope everyone enjoys the spring game...except those of course at the Alumni Awards Dinner honoring some of UNT's great and deserving alumni. I'll have to get my spring football fix at some of the practices and scrimmages. It's gonna be fun to be a member of the Mean green nation...yes, it is! GO MEAN GREEN!

  44. When Being Biggest Isn’t the Best We know we’re big here in Texas, but does our public school payroll have to lead the nation? For every 10,000 Texans our state-supported schools employ 273 people. Come on, you say: New Jersey just has to lead Texas in that category, right? Wrong. New Jersey has just 266 school workers per 10,000 people. We’re No. 1! Aren’t you proud? And we could be proud—maybe—if the numbers reflected classroom teachers trying to stuff Shakespeare, the Declaration of Independence, and some algebra into young minds. In fact, nearly half our 661,000 public school workforce does something other than teach—administering, record-keeping, answering the telephone, cleaning, transporting, serving meals, and maybe devoting time to how they can avoid having their salaries and benefits trimmed, like so many private sector workers who pay the teachers’ salaries. The question we need to ask is, how come we need almost as many folks doing support work as there are doing the stuff for which schools supposedly exist in the first place—teaching kids? Big budget cuts are coming in government spending all over the United States—here as well as New Jersey, New York, California, and Wisconsin (where public workers lately stormed Capitol Square to protest). The money, as everybody and his dog knows by now, just isn’t there. Raise taxes, and you damage recovering economies and cause deterioration in private sector payrolls. Spending cuts in the government sector reflect reality: namely, too many people in legislatures and public bodies indiscriminately threw around money in the fat years that allowed them to hire more people than necessary to do the job. Even teachers are going to lose their jobs as public schools retrench. But when you’ve got nearly as many non-teachers on the payroll as teachers, you find ways to get by with fewer services at lower cost. By the way, it’s also how you learn what you really need as opposed to what public employee unions tell you.

  46. To the powers-that-be: Thanks for changing the game to Saturday. As a result there will be at least three more people able to attend that would not have been able to attend on Friday. Now, will someone please provide a little help for those of us who do not know the "New Denton" as well as we knew the "Denton of the 70s" - where is this high school stadium located (just a general location will be enough to get me there). Thanks. GMG
