  6. We had a great time...and a big surprise! Had about 20 for the lunch today and the UNT Athletic Staff were great as usual. Special thanks to Kendra, Matt, Cooper and the rest. We showed the video from the football banquet. And, then who walks in: No less then Coach Mac! He was on his way to another meeting, but spent 10 magic minutes and left everyone fired up! It was a grand day and we hope to have another one soon. Thanks for asking! Rick

  7. Tune-up for the Houston game? FIU is the preaseson favorite to win the Sun Belt. The FIU game will give us a better picture of what to expect out of the team next year and in all honesty its more important for us to beat FIU than Houston.

  8. The conference is getting what it deserves this year. A lot of coaches (Scott and Brady, most egregiously) admitted before the year even started that all they cared about was being ready for conference play. Isiah Thomas is so busy trying to get back to the Knicks that he can't handle Utah Valley. Brady chokes against Savannah State. Even Bob Marlin dropped a game to an NAIA before conference play started. Aside from us... Take a year of OOC mediocrity (and only 2 or 3 instances of that- WKU, FAU, UALR) to outright misery, throw in league parity and bad in-conference losses dragging down the teams that managed to get through OOC with not-awful RPI rankings... And what you get is a league where the champion is going to, at best, finish with an RPI in the 105-115 range. 2nd best RPI contender could maybe claw back up to about 125. That's 16 seed range, right there. I really thought that ASU, USA, WKU, FAU, and us would make this a banner year for Sun Belt basketball. Instead, ASU did worse than nothing, WKU and FAU went about .500, and USA joined us in a conference season meltdown. The 150 rule came along one year too late. I'm also hopeful that, with Denver leaving, we go to non-divisional play and everyone plays 20 conference games. That leaves 8-9 OOC games instead of 13 this year, allowing conference members to schedule more selectively and spend their resources on a higher percentage of OOC home games. Basically, if we go to non-divisional play, terrible teams have 1/3rd fewer chances to go out and suck, and they have to use their OOC paycheck games more selectively. FIU can still get checks to play FSU and Louisville, but 4-5 fewer OOC games means they probably don't even want to schedule UVU. 150 rule. Non-divisional conference play. Coaches who aspire to more than a fluke 3-4 game win streak in March. There's hope. But nobody in this league deserves anything higher than the worst 15 seed. Other than us and FAU, anyone who gets in the tournament will probably be in the play-in game. It's shameful, I think it's the first time anyone representing the SBC will have ever been a 16 seed... But it's totally deserved.

  9. I assume I am in the minority here but I say let the Nike design team that handles Oregon and TCU have complete creative control of the uniform design. I am such a fan of almost 100% of what Oregon and TCU put on the field. I am ready for the -1 votes!

  10. How would it be zero sum? With a new coaching staff we should be significantly improving on a team that competed pretty well despite terrible injury problems and an inferior (not all of them) coaching staff. Yes we will have some problem areas, but we are competing against Sun Belt teams. It's not like we have to run the conference gauntlet against the SEC. Even under the circumstances, I personally (I don't speak for everyone) think we have lowered the expectations way too much if we do not go into a game against say....ULL, or ULM and not expect to win. I think the same goes for FIU and Troy even though they are very much improved. Thing is, to get to a bowl game, we only need to win 6 games (probably). If we can't win one of Houston, Indiana, or Tulsa, and then 5 in the SBC, I admit I will be disappointed. I won't be upset, because I know we have a lot to overcome, I still, for some reason feel that we need to expect more even out of a first year coach because: 1) he does not have a bare "pantry", and 2) we play in the SBC. Having a good game plan, Lance Dunbar staying healthy, and just having a defense that has been taught how to tackle should get us 4 wins in the SBC. We just need to find the other two wins somewhere.

  11. I had the opportunity, with several other Volunteer Reps for the Mean green Club, to meet with Coach Mac before the Mean Green basketball game last evening. If you have not had the chance to get "up close and personal" with the man you are in for a real treat when you do. UNT has a head coach that is the "real deal" and this guy is passionate about UNT and UNT football and where it can go. He is also passionate about improving the defense, and I think UNT fans will see a different defense this next season. I am not so much talking about scheme or personnel as I am attitude and fundamentally sound football. Coach mac has sold his home in Florida and is now looking for a home in Denton. He is serious about living in Denton and being a part...a big part...of the local community. He is dedicated to raising attendance levels by placing a product on the field that folks will want to come see and support in UNT's beautiful new stadium. I won't list lots of specifics here as he asked that several comments be kept within the room. But what i can tell you is that Coach mac is serious about turning the program around and developing a program both on and off the field and in the classroom that everyone associated with the program and UNT can be very proud of for a long time to come. He is quite candid about the job ahead and knows it won't be easy or an overnight fix, but it will be better and it will be better from day 1. I believe! And, with this being the second time I have had to be around Coach Mac, I am more convinced than ever that UNT is on the right track and that GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT UNT! Go Mean Green!

  12. Jamie Benn is much more of a "future cornerstone of the team" guy. We have plenty of depth at forward both in prospects and in already established players. What we had in Niskanen was a defenseman who didn't like contact and therefore didn't fit the mold of what Crawford wants from his defense. What we got was a PROVEN "puck moving" defenseman who isn't afraid of contact instead of a SUPPOSED "puck moving" defenseman. Also, Goliogoski has 31 points on the season so far and Neal only has 39 even though he has been on the top line all season where Richards tees it up for his linemates every game. Good trade in my opinion.

  17. He warmed up on our end of the court before the 2nd half, and he had 2 or 3 fingers completely immobilized with tape (and what looked like a splint). Held that hand out from his body, never touched anything or anyone with it, and only warmed up with one hand. When he came in for his one shift in the 2nd half, he tried using both hands... But his one shot came up very short, and an attempted pass in to him bounced off him and went out of bounds. Then he got pulled. Whatever happened, he either broke it or severely aggravated a hairline break at some point in the 1st half against ULM.

  18. Thank you for the report. As a long time MG fan I am excited about the future but completely uncertain. That is not a bad thing because I was giddy over the Dodge hire only to be gutted for four straight years. I am not excited about Coach Mac because he doesn't come with the buzz a new coach might bring. That doesn't mean he is not THE guy, just that I am shockingly uninspired about Mean Green football right now. Maybe it's the off-season. Maybe it is the basketball gloom. Either way I think we need to hear a lot more from Coach to get the mass ignited. I am sure he is still working on the strategy, but it was weird how fired up Canales got me in a few short weeks. I hope Coach C keeps his optimistic fire, bold and brazen standards, and passion to fight from the co-pilot's seat. I am ready to get fired up! GMG

  24. How does the sunbelt go form having two teams getting 10 to 12 seeds a few years ago to being stuck in a play off game? I know the conference is bad, but we deserve a little more respect then this. Even UTEP at least has what, a 15 seed..... Can we buy some respect here http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

  28. I get where you are coming from, but the win/loss record isn't the only measure of improvement. No doubt the coaches agree with you that it's all about results, but you might be setting yourself up for disappointment if you expect to see a drastically better record in the first year. There is a reason UNT has struggled recently, and I don't think it can ALL be put on coaching. You need to have the players... recruiting is definitely part of coaching, but I'm not sure it is fair to expect Mac and staff to take players that haven't exactly torn up the Sun Belt and go bowling. I'd expect to see clear improvement on the field, but without knowing your roster, I don't know if it is fair to assume the improvement in play will result in more wins. I'd hope so, but wouldn't get all bent if it doesn't happen. You need to have the players. No matter how well a guy is coached he still needs to get to the ball carrier in order to tackle him. It was kind of funny when Mac took over at Iowa State... us fans were really impressed that our defense wasn't missing a gajillion tackles any more. Now our guys were putting the ball carrier down. On his call in show when asked about it, Mac pointed out that the reason we didn't miss many tackles was because we weren't getting anywhere near the ball carrier in the first place. Funny, but true. You can't miss a tackle if you don't get within 5 yards of the guy. We simply weren't fast enough. Coaching can only take a guy so far. Not saying that coaching won't IMPROVE the play on the field next fall, but maybe not enough to effect the record as much as everybody would like. Early in Mac's tenure, i looked for the little things. We quit having receivers running wild and free through our secondary while our db's covered each other. When we DID get to the ball carrier, we tackled him on the first try. We quit turning the ball over. We quit giving up crazy huge return yardage among other improvements. We still lost a lot of games at first but I could see improvement every game. The recruiting picked up, and suddenly these small improvements turned into consistent winning. It took time though. Did Dodge leave Mac a bowl quality roster? I don't know, but if he did, he must have been completely inept last year. No matter how hard Mac tries to fix it, he's pretty much dealing with Dodge's roster this coming fall. So it is what it is for now. Anyway - just throwing my 2 cents out there.

  31. It makes me sick to acknowledge this, but I was only saying that we wouldn't be in a play-in game. If we were to somehow win out on 7 straight games, we could get up to about 118-125 RPI and get a 16 seed outright. A strong finishing FAU may be the conference's best and only hope for a 15 seed at this point. I don't see 6 teams with RPIs lower than 110-115 AND worse conference RPIs AND inferior tournament resumes making the field this year. I'm still going to Hot Springs and I still think we've got enough talent to contend. But we're down to 8 scholarship players, one of those needs knee surgery, another is a walking injury report that gets braced and taped together well enough to go out and keep adding new injuries to his list, and another is occasional boot-wearer Josh White. We have 5 guys who are "healthy", as far as we know. Can't say my expectations are very high right at the moment.

  32. I don't consider 1 win a big improvement. It's about results. We no longer have a high school coach, and should expect this staff to produce immediately. I would hope this coaching staff expects the same thing. Just sayin...

  33. How is that possible? Do not tell me it is from the last game... He was favoring his hands, but it looked more like a finger injury... when did this happen? I hope he is 110% for next year...

  34. After suggesting that JJ may have just make a little mistake in not using his pocketed ships this year, and finding out that to many that is an extreme position. I will now ruthlessly attack a truly defenseless subject and talk women's basketball. The NT and ULM game was another great example of very questionable basketball. I wonder how often a college team has lost to an opponent that shoot something like 23% and who missed 28 straight field goal attempts in the second half. With the game on the line in the final minutes, the NT players vied to see who could hoist up the worst shoot. Of course, one of the two NT best players was out for undisclosed personal reasons, Godbolt. Not only is she the only true post player, NT has but as a sophomore probably the most important player on the team. Her being absence of course let to all those missed shots as ULM got multiple shots about every time they went down the court. The write-ups of this game referred to it being a defensive struggle, sorry missing wide open shots is not the sign of good defense. Of course, the people who care about WBB were minuscule to begin with and that has dwindled substantially with SS's record and issues. The only real reason that I am commenting on the game is that with Stephens' record of player discord, I wonder if Godbolt is the latest instance. I guess we will see. The team is actually marginally better than last year, at least most of the games are much closer. They do have some potential but SS's almost complete failure to recruit anything but guards has made it even more difficult. I do wonder how this post will be received, negative and critical to be sure, but at least it shows that someone is concerned enough to comment.

  35. Hail the armadillos. "Unnecessary Roughness" was far from great and if it been filmed anywhere else would be a lot less dear to NT fans. Rudy was hailed as a much better firm but frankly I thought it was overrated. Like most supposedly true stories they were a lot of liberties taken as the recent and I think better "Blind Side". Unnecessary Roughness was a great example of a fun B movie with just about ever sport stereotype used and no pretensions.

  36. I agree thoroughly with your comment. Never underestimate the ability of a great coach to "coach up" the talent that he inherits. The cupboard was not bare when Coach Mac arrived. A good new strength coach and coordinated position weight program will make a huge difference in linemen not to mention more 6" 4" recruits than I ever remember. The new coaches found our linemen to be mushy and blubbery. They don't want anyone whose waist is broader than his shoulders. Take a relook at some of the departing JUCOS under this standard and you'll see why even though we could get penetration on the rush we were too slow to pursue to make the sack, i.e. Atkinson, etc. We had barely escaped with one win the year before Hayden Fry took over, and Fry finished 5-5-1 in his first year and won the co-championship of the Missouri Valley Conference. Will there be rough spots such as a 'Bama blow out ? Of course, but don't underestimate the inspiration and new look that comes with the new staff. Do I wish that it could have come a year earlier? Hell yes, but the fact is it took a year to educate the BOR what a real D-1 coach and staff cost in these times. This puts us in a position to compete and win now and that's all any coach can do---put his players in a position to win. Coaches Mac and Chico guarantee that is possible now.

  37. I am sure someone has mentioned it before but we were just a measly 17 pts from tacking on 4 more wins last yr? That would have put us at 7-5 and possibly a bowl. Not to mention Dodge would have been retained and we would never have know an interim Coach Chico and definitely not a head coach named Coach McCarney. Rather crazy when you think about what 2 extra TDs and 2 extra FGs could have done to change the outcome of where we are at now.

  39. Oh, and that is true in so very many ways. The motto of the United States Merchant Marine Academy is "ACTA NON VERBA"...roughly translated it means "Actions not Words". I think we all see the opposite in a lot of areas of our lives these days, but let us not get so jaded in our lives that we cannot see the good things that are around us each and every day. If you have seen or head Coach mac, I think you would agree that he is the "real deal". Of course, we will all be able to validate that once we have seen the results of his coaching and that of his staff. GO MEAN GREEN!
