  1. I finally got around to typing this up. This is going to be pretty long, but this is the situation we are in. This shows what can occur if we win out. That would mean we win our three remaining games at home, and then the two road games in Arkansas. ASU worries me significantly more than UALR, but that does not matter at this point. I am going to be working with the loss column a lot, and here are the current loss numbers for West Division contenders: Denver - 4 Arkansas State - 4 ULL - 5 UALR - 5 UNT - 6 Now, if we win out, our final record will be 10-6, and by virtue of winning out, UNT would give losses to ASU, UALR, and Denver. Losses for contenders would then be: Denver - 5 Arkansas State - 5 ULL - 5 UALR - 5 UNT - 6 There are many things that can happen, but this scenario ONLY considers what is completely in our control, which means our own games, as well as games between certain teams that guarantee there are losses to go around. These games are UALR @ ASU, ASU @ ULL (tonight), and Denver @ ULL. For this scenario we are assuming these teams win all other games they play. There are eight possible ways that these games can work themselves out, and I basically used sort of a binary system to do it. (0) UALR @ (1) ASU (0) ASU @ (1) ULL (0) Denver @ (1) ULL Using those 0's and 1's to show who wins, the eight scenarios are (from top to bottom): 1. 000 2. 100 3. 010 4. 001 5. 110 6. 011 7. 101 8. 111 Here are the outcomes of those scenarios: 1) Denver wins the west (11-5)...UNT, UALR, ASU tied for #2. UNT would be 4-0 head to head vs. those teams and would win the tiebreak. Bye #1: Denver; Bye #2: North Texas. 2) UNT, ASU, UALR and Denver all tied for SBCW title. UNT wins the tiebreak with a 5-1 record between the 3 other teams. Bye #1: North Texas; Bye #2: depends. 3) Denver wins the west (11-5)...UNT, ULL, and UALR tied for #2. UNT with a 3-1 record against those teams gets the second bye. Bye #1: Denver; Bye #2: North Texas. 4) All five teams tied for the title. UNT wins the tiebreak with a 6-2 record against involved teams. Bye #1 North Texas; Bye #2: depends. 5) Denver wins the west (11-5)...UNT, ASU, and ULL tied for #2. UNT wins the tiebreak with a 3-1 record against involved teams. Bye #1: Denver; Bye #2: North Texas. 6) ULL wins the west (11-5)...UNT, ASU, UALR, and Denver tied for #2. UNT wins the tiebreak with a 5-1 record against involved teams. Bye #1: ULL; Bye #2: North Texas 7) ASU wins the west (11-5)...UNT, ULL, and Denver tied for #2. All three teams are tied head to head, but UNT's 8-2 record vs. the west division wins it. Bye #1: ASU; Bye #2: North Texas. 8) ULL wins the west (11-5)...UNT, ASU, and Denver tied for #2. With a 3-1 record vs. involved teams UNT wins the tiebreak. Bye #1: ULL, Bye #2: North Texas. If we win out, we are guaranteed a bye. The fact that almost all of our losses have come to the east division helps with tiebreaks, and if we win out, we will literally hold every tiebreak possible against every west division team. These scenarios also assume all involved teams win all of their other games. With certain breaks, it would be possible for UNT to go 4-1 in this stretch and still get a bye. Once the ASU/ULL game tonight has been played, 4 of these scenarios will disappear. We are getting down to crunch time. For what its worth, of these scenarios, here are the potential west division champions: Denver - 3 scenarios North Texas - 2 scenarios ULL - 2 scenarios ASU - 1 scenario Hope that wasn't too long for you guys. It will basically be cut in half tonight, and we could also get a boost from a UALR loss. Go Mean Green!

  2. I'm also an SMU guy, and I'm kind of annoyed by the lack of UNT in our OOC schedule in both football (though that's changing) and basketball. Just by reading comments on either forum it's clear there's animosity; it's time to turn that into a full-fledged regional rivalry on the field and court.

  4. *Important* - I need to start this off with something important. Attendance is very important for conference realignment, and we are going to be competing with other Sun Belt schools for those spots. We are currently #3 in the Sun Belt for basketball attendance. We were passed this weekend by MTSU (by 80/game) but WKU also dropped this weekend to just under 300/game ahead of us. MTSU and WKU both only have one home game left, and we have three. These three games are an opportunity. Get your butts in the seats, and bring your friends. If you are a student like I am, spread the word on campus, and encourage your friends to come, just get people in that arena. These next two games, plus senior night, and we have an opportunity to lead the conference in attendance. These are also HUGE games for our team, and they need a great crowd now more than ever. Now onto the attendance report. There was some movement this weekend. WKU had a crowd of just over 2000 for their game against FGCU, and dropped under 4000 overall average for the first time this year. MTSU had the best crowd of the weekend (4605) for their game against FIU. With that crowd, MTSU passed UNT for the #2 overall spot. The top three are now separated by less than 300/game. North Texas still leads the conference game attendance, but it is packed pretty tightly at the top. 7 teams are averaging over 3000 for conference games. The conference average this season is 2625 for all games, and 2737 for conference games. The top 10 crowds of the year are unchanged from last week.

Oh yeah, the roster is very very good next year. Thanks for Mangrum, he's an energetic kid and helped a ton. He's having a blast

  13. What's goin on all, I just transfered here from out of state (Alabama), and was wanting to find out some stuff about UNT Football. Coming from Alabama to UNT the football is pretty different it seems hah, I checked out the scores for last season and it seemed pretty bad, I'm not tryin to dog anyone btw. With the coach being McCarney now, do you think the chances are goin to go up for having a good season this year? I gota admit I wasnt all that excited about UNT sports but that new stadium is gettin me kind of pumped. Lat question, what are the odds of UNT getting a baseball team?

  18. At 60 it's my God-given right to be incoherent from time to time (and if you've ever been that way you'd know how I have felt when I was), but concerning North Texas, I think most objective posters on this board (mostly my age give or take a few years) and who have decades of all this MG business from which to judge by) would say I've been mostly correct the last 4 decades about what I have posted (or written letters to UNT powers) about what we could do to improve our product and the kind of personnel we could hire who would not abuse their power by telling us how lucky we were to have them on payroll albeit most those years under their watch we had Bottom 25 programs (across the board). Mutli-decades of non-stop terrible hirings (with subsequent poor annual results) and many of which their North Texas job was their highest career pinnacle has tended to take the wind out of many of our sails, though, and has caused many of our alums/fans throw their hands up and leave behind that which always seemed to get the same results over and over again with the same people in charge. I know, this will be incoherent to some who may not have the ability to have a perspective on our situation(s) from a multi-decades standpoint. Just, uh, sayin' how many others feel but simply will not post because of a perceived loss of popularity to get an extra Mean Green Eagle star in their crown I suppose. The new football staff looks very promising, but I honestly do not know about those same "running in motion" slackers who are still around all these years later who would still use the same ol' methods to promote this new staff and their potential. The new stadium will buy about a years time to take the real focus off of those who created those problems but still............sometimes upwardly mobile personnel change (and fresh methods) of those who could come in here actually take us out of where we've been forever along with a systematic NCAA march upward to a better neighborhood is good and is good for all parties concerned. Just sayin'......that which will not tickle too many ears on this forum but the aforementioned content in this very paragraph is not what gets schools like North Texas out of where we are and have been for almost an adult lifetime, now does it? Proceed--go on now... GMG!

  26. Just another episode in what has become common in Dallas, Dallas County and in DISD these days. I was born and raised in Dallas and love the place. But, it is fast becoming a "Chicago-style" city in terms of its governance. Then you add the Jerry World fiasco at the Super Bowl and the area just can't seem to catch a break. John W Price is an effective politician and represents his constituents the way they seem to want to be represented, but he definitely has anger issues and is probably the biggest user of the race card one has ever seen. If it really isn't racist, he'll make it up and claim it is...that's his mode of operation and I think he does it to mask some very large personal insecurities. The guy is immature and needs to grow up. In the meantime Dallas' reputation suffers big time and the citizens of Dallas and Dallas County pay the price. The guy is fast becoming a clown. Too bad, because as I mentioned, he can be a very effective rep for his district and he is pretty fiscally conservative if you look at his record. Bottom line, all the good he does is overshadowed by these anger management issues.

  28. T You are just playing a game of semantics. Think what you will, but there is really no debate about it. The police are now and have always been considered as a semi-military type organization. Ranking structure, chain of command, etc. If you have a problem with them calling non-police officers civilians, then so be it. Your opinion still won't change a thing.
    1 point
  29. How does that make them a member of the armed forces and not civilian? They are not military (though the we could debate whether the current trend towards paramilitary style policing is a good thing) they remain decidedly civilian or they would not be allowed to operate as they currently do under the Constitution.

  30. I prefer to stay focused on the Big Picture and that's building the program. If anything is overrated, it's having a bunch of seniors on a ball club. Is it possible that we overachieved in years past or guys peaked? Becoming the target and/or not slipping up on anyone. Maybe hitting a wall due to a lack of depth while playing heavy minutes. I really don't care how many games this team wins in any given year or whether or not we win the conference. (Been there, done that) My concern is if the program is getting better. Unlike football, the Sunbelt champs will always get a 14, 15 or 16th seed. This will ensure we play a top 20 team (out of over 300) The odds, at this time, are not great of beating a top 20 team. In football, the Sunbelt champ will play a 3rd or 4th place team from another mid-major conference or slightly above. The chances of a bowl victory are much better in football for the Sunbelt champs (playing a top 60 team) For us to continue to get better each year, we need better players. TT maybe the only guy on this team that would start for a Top 30 - 40 team. So why should we expect them to beat one of these teams in the NCAA tournament? On paper, does it look like we are bringing in better talent? I say yes. We are a perimeter team without a threat down low. This must be addressed! Geore Odufawa has played out of position, out of necessity, the whole season. One of our better players is a 5-9 shooting guard playing point guard. As Dan MacCarney would say, "Are You Kidding Me"? Should we look for a 5-9 guard to carry us each game? In my opinion, we have a few more guys that should not even be playing in the Sunbelt. We are a .500 team because we can easily lose to any team just like we can beat any team. Is help on the way? I think so. Within the past 2-3 years, JJ has done a much better job in getting the attention of top recruits. Most have not signed but we appear to be in the game. The program has taken longer than I would have liked but I see an upgrade in who we go after. Conversely, we've signed a few that I did not understand. I know there are all types of fans in each program. I personally like to see recruits play (football and basketball) while they are still in high school. I also try to attend as many of our games as possible. Additionally, our opponents. As such, I don't have to rely on what others have to say, what I read or what some recruiting service said. I can not be disapointed in this team or believe they are overrated or underrated. This team has not quit. I have never felt that we needed to tear up JJ contract for a better one or worried that he may leave. Overall, I like the direction of the program; whether we win 24, 22, 20 or 18. Don't understand why the expectations are so much higher for the basketball team than football. When we recruit a team of highly sought players and/or obtain a top 20 ranking, my expectations for the team will increase.

  31. 1) At this point, I don't know who is overrating us. 2) The "beating a team of significance" thing is tired and meaningless. Utah State is ranked 17th, and who have they beaten? Diminishing the wins we do have doesn't seem as relevant a point (to me, at least) as seeing the terrible losses we have for what they are. The only "team of significance" on our schedule, if Tech and the road win at LSU don't count, was Kansas. They're 2nd in the country and only one team has beaten them. We can't beat teams that won't play us in worthwhile series. If the day ever comes that the football team manages to beat two BCS teams in the same year, I promise I won't swing by the football forum and talk about how meaningless the wins are because they came against teams that were 5-7. 3) I'd put money on us still winning 20 games. Not saying it ought to be a goal that makes this season satisfying, but despite it all I think we'll get there again.

  35. Sorry, this in no way is "proof" of serious football fans. This is proof of one very stupid Alabama fan. Serious fans of football do not act this way, they respect the sport and the teams that play the game. Serious football fans are respectful of their opponent's' property and programs. They support their favorite team with a passion, but it is not misplaced into some stupid act of violence or other misconduct. I know what you are trying to say here, but please do not equate serious football fans with this sort of immature and destructive behavior.

  36. No doubt about it. But, in a previous post, you defended the policy of taxing a non-resident who is involved in a teraffic accident while implying that Cities never put pressure on their officers to write tickets. Isn't it apparent that they are attempting to use a seperate police function (working accidents) to raise revenue, yet you think there is no way they would try to use police, in other ways, to raise revenue? Administrations are smart enough to apply pressure in an indirect way and not violate the law against quotas. Make no mistake, the pressure is still there. It is not just about public contact. In a perfect world where everyone did what they were suppose to do, it would be. Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world. I'm sure the officers are weary of this topic. That doesn't surprise me one bit

  39. I don't disagree with anything you just wrote, other than they are pressured to write tickets. I said in two of my posts that PD's monitor "public contact". You can say they are "pressured" to contact the public--which is their job. They are not pressured to write tickets as a rule. I will admit maybe you've seen some PD that does this, because I haven't been in every PD in Texas. It is not the norm. There are some who do what they want when they want, just as any other profession. Every contact with the public--warning, whatever--counts the same. They are written up much the same way. Perhaps you've seen a department where there is pressure to write tickets. I have never seen this, and I listed departments I have been in personally, and departments where I personally know cops. I said they do not have quotas. They do not, as you mention above. *Some* departments use contact with the public as a measurement for performance--which is what the THP does, and was ruled legal by the Supreme Court. Citations are part of contact with the public. Not all of it. Traffic stops are important in law enforcement, as you mention and can lead to discovery of other crimes. There's no disputing this, and it's police 101. It is also a straw man argument. This thread is about "speed traps, quotas, and generating revenue." Cops do not set up speed traps to generate revenue or to fill a quota. They use them to slow speeding down. This is kind of funny, 90. I talk to 2 almost every day. I mentioned this thread to them. They are weary of this topic.

  40. They absolutely do. Some even have large boards showing each officers production in the briefing rooms for all officers to see. I've seen boards that count a traffic ticket the same as a self initiated felony arrest. I've known guys who lead their shift in felony arrests, and still get called in and counseled on their lack of citations (which is completely legal as long as you don't put a number on it.) At some places, you can answer more calls than anyone on your shift for the month, yet still get a bad performance review for a lack of self initiated activity in traffic enforcement. You apparently don't get (or didn't read) what I am saying. The vast majority of officers out there use traffic enforcement as a means to an end (find a violation on a car leaving a dope house, etc...) and could give a rats ass about writing productive members of society a ticket. There is no problem with the officers. Their administrations absolutely put pressure on these officers to write tickets. If you don't believe me, talk to your beat officer. Ask him if he is pressured.
