  1. I don't know if we have EVER out recruited anyone on our schedule in the 25 years I have been following the Mean Green. But we have OUTCOACHED and OUTPLAYED and OUTHUSTLED and whipped our share of ass on the field and I and many others have witnessed it. Which is why I'll never understand why anyone gets worked up over the recruit rating stuff. Coaching is the key to success. Always has been and always will be. The coaches pick the talent that they know they can mold. I suggest those who are really worried about it go back and reread the bio's of this coaching staff and see that we now have one of the most battled hardened staff NT has ever had. Relax! We're gonna be fine. It' All Good and All Green! Rick

  2. And we did our part to publicize it, too. I posted about the game on FaceBook and texted all my Denton friends to bring their families out tonight.

  3. TCU has yet to ever sign a player form the ESPN top 150, which are the 5star and 4 star players everyone wants, until this year, and they got 1. Grades and stars partly come because of interest, so it's almost a self-predicting prcoess whereby the AQ's and larger schools targets are automatically rated a little higher because of the schools recruiting them. Rankings are a highly flawed system. I'm pleased with the class, I think Coach Mac got guys that fir his system, speed across the board, and a lot of veteran football players. Several 3 yr starters, a 4 yr starter, those kids know the game. Truthfully, if you can't be optimistic now, then when will you be?

  10. Health Care Debate...not the first ruling: 2 for, 2 against...right down appointed political lines. Shocking development, really. As for your "paragraph" or "statement" on Egypt...I mean, there are unintelligible ramblings...and then there is this. Seriously...absolutely nobody, not the US, not Europe, not Ben Ali and Mubarak, not the protesters themselves could've had any cognition as to the scale of what is currently brewing. For anyone to attempting to lay blame or criticize, really anyone, for the unexpected scale of these events is beyond lunacy. There's partisan-ized opinion...then theres just insanity.

  11. Coming from Granbury, with a stop in FtW to put in my 8 hours. Don't be a bunch of Tecas wusses. The interstates have ice-free driving lanes, just drive in the tire tracks. Once you are out of the neighborhood, it's not that bad.

  13. My honey is out shoveling our driveway now so we can take the family (plus a neighbor's kid who wants to go). From talking with neighbors who have been out, there are bad spots, but they all say being cautious and driving slowly made the trips ok.

  16. I know you were being sarcastic, but I agree with the comment. I don't want us to be like Troy taking academic risks, over signing, heavy reliance on JUCO's and probably the most lenient entrance requirements in D1.

  17. I, and maybe alone, don't want to build our program following their mold. But their wins are worth noting. They rely heavily on non-qualifiers and Juco Transfers.

  19. Yeah and before that it led to a national championship, a few BCS bowl wins, a record number of 10-win seasons, bowl appearances, etc. I understand the sentiment, but all this "ratings don't matter talk" is what people say who didn't get players with high ratings. This is a fine class, why people feel the need to denigrate the rating system to feel good about it is beyond me.

  20. Those of us who did not drink Dodge cool-aid did NOT think his first class was all that good. It fact many of us thought it was the obvious disaster it was bound to be when he delayed taking the job for a month. One of the worst decisions ever by an incoming North Texas coach and symptomatic of what was to occur. Not everyone was on that bandwagon at all.

  22. I totally agree with Rick on the bolded section. One of my favorite coaches, Corkey Nelson, used to take what most people considered leftovers and beat people like TCU, Texas Tech, Rice, and New Mexico. The most recent example is how our team played when Coach Canales was fully in charge. I'm going to be more interested in how our current players respond to the new coaching staff, rather than how much of an impact the new players will make on the team.

  23. By the way, wasn't Texas 5-7 this year. Obviously, the star system did not work for them this year. Big Ben wasn't exactly a five star. Closer to home remember PC. I think we all would love to have five star recruits for bragging rights; however, it does not always show up in positive results. These coaches know what they need and seem to feel they got it. I am willing to accept that.

  24. Given the circumstances and all (late start, the years of Dodge to overcome)......I'd give this class a B. If we'd have been able to retain Hunt and Carr....a B+ or A-. But still, very good work by our staff.

  27. Star's are handed out based on the top 50 then 51-150, then 151-300 and so forth. Urban Meyer was on ESPNU today and said the difference between a 147 ranked player and the 350th ranked player, was nonexistent. Pastor Grant hit it too, I think there's some guys under the radar in this class and a sleeper or two. Recruiting is only half the battle. TCU signed there first ESPNU top 150 player, a 4 star receiver, yet they've done pretty well for themselves. UT is near the top of the ranking every year, yet went 5-6 last yr. Never underestimate the importance of how the players are utilized and developed. Still feel like this was a very solid and complete class.

  28. Like it or not; SMU is miles ahead of NT now. Unfortunately, so are the rest of the Texas fb schools. Several Belt teams also had outstanding recruiting years on paper in particular WKU and FIU. I think McCarney and staff did great under the circumstances but NT has a long long way to go.

  29. Obviously, the two jucos will be the most likely to be factors next year, both could be starters. A lot of the recruits are at fairly loaded positions like db and rb. It is highly unusual for offensive line men to play much their first year. The defensive line is a need area but unlike many I don't see any new players pushing for starter minutes. Even though NT doesn't have any real standouts coming back in the defensive line, I see McCoy, Obi, Gaines and Akpunku the de rotation. At dt, Cantly, Abbe, and White should be ahead of the newcomers. Jones could challenge for QB but would be behind both Thompson and Osborn. I think all three linebackers could be in the rotation with Phillips and Orr the only sure things. DB is senior laden with McCord, Hill, Downing, Cook and Shorter and hopefully recovered junior Ford joining the mix. The best NT recruits are dbs and the freshmen may be good enough to get a lot of play time but it is not sure thing. My pick for freshman to click, Stojkovic with Swarm and Warner next.

  31. OK, sorry, no offense...BUT tickets to Mean Green Games are NOT cheap. They are definitely INEXPENSIVE for the value received, but they are not cheap. "Cheap" has a meaning that involves "inferior". Mean Green tickets are definitely not inferior. In my humble opinion the correct phrasing would be "tickets to our games are inexpensive". Just sayin'.......

  33. What does it matter? Obviously the new leader is going to need a few years to get his guys in place before Egypt can become a contender again. Sad to see such a terrific dynasty fall so far over the past 3000 years.

  34. High today about 17 degrees? That obviously means little thawing out and much black ice on the bridges that you cannot see at night. I'm surprised they have not postponed the Recruiting party because you ever been out in this kind of weather in the dark when someone rattles your bumper in a fender-bender (or worse) and then you need AAA Auto Service to come to the rescue while you are subject to frost bite? That happened to a Fort Worth friend last night, but he had a warm place to go. UNT officials should move both the game and the Recruiting party to Saturday in consideration of those who would get out on the interstates in this terrible weather; that is, if they just want to keep it local and small turnout. I'd hate to hear of any bad wrecks among our elect due to this still being on the schedule. (It will mostly be the bridges that will be the problem tonight). GMG!

  37. Egypt has little to do with the current or past administration... truth is, Egypt has been a powder keg for well over twenty years... After Sadat was assassinated, I was surprised their wasn't a large uprising. Your statements read like the type of reporting which tries to tie unrelated topics together, a la FOX (Egypt + American healthcare... really...)

  38. You do realize that just about all of the article was a conversation with an "expert" on Muslim-U.S relations, right? Now, if you are saying you doubt what this "expert: is saying, we agree yet again. That would be a little strange.

  39. It most certainly does matter what is better for us, mainly because like most countries we will act in our own best interest most of the time. Does it matter to the Egyptians? Ask them, though I would guess that the ones who are pro-government would think it matters and the anti-government side would think our opinion means almost nothing. I made no suggestion that these people are too stupid to make their own choices, all I did is say what I thought would be best for us. Where did you get that from? Are you projecting?

  40. My point is that it is our damned business. I was quite careful to avoid saying what we should do, but this unrest in Egypt is our business and advocating that stick our collective heads in the sand (what you seemed to be saying) is a poor choice. Sticking our heads in the sand has led to greater problems in the long run. This particular situation is very dicey, though I think we are better off with Mubarak in charge. The devil you know...

  41. None of the crap that went down in Germany in the mid 1930s was our business either and we treated it as such. That didn't work out to well and we have been more active in international affairs ever since.

  42. Don't really disagree with you that much, other than to point out that any time there is unrest in previous stable muslim countries, there is ALWAYS a risk that if the government is deposed, the new government will be a fundamentalist Islamic government. Egypt is more concerning than Tunisia because of the national interests of the U.S. Although they are not the only factions involved, fundamental muslim groups are VERY involved in these protests, and will make a huge push to control the government if the current government falls. People really need to research the fall of the Shaw of Iran. What started out as a push for democracy was hijacked by the muslim extremist, and we all know the ending to that story.

  43. The climate change theories generally involve ice core and sea bed samples from as far back as 600,000 years. Seriously dude, a quick check on wikipedia would be something of a start.

  44. I didn't say that at all, but if it helps you sleep better at night more power to ya. Sadly many on these boards act as if nothing is going on, and its all political hogwash. As if that many climate scientists could magically be bought or confused about their lifelong professions. If a proven engineer told you tomorrow that a bridge by your home was on the verge of collapse I could guarantee you and anyone else would find a new way home. It seems that climate scientists and NFL coaches are the only professions where its ok to 2nd guess them. C'mon dude, this is exactly what I'm freaking talking about. You want to argue that climate change isn't man-made, knock yourself the heck out. But don't come around making silly assumptions like this.

  48. Sometimes it actually does hurt people, in a financial sort of way to have someone steal, intellectual property. At the "think tank" our authors actually do quite a bit of work in the area of intellectual property and intellectual property rights. You just might be amazed at what the financial impact is when it comes to "pirating" anything. It is starting to cause some serious damage to some very big industries and has led to lay-offs, reduced incomes, etc. This really is a big issue and one that faces the economies of the entire world. I don't know about the site in question, but if, indeed, it is a pirated site, one probably ought not bother with it. Or not........
