Powers - Does a woodchuck chuck wood? Osborn - I get the feeling that he's the starting quarterback. Brooks - Will work into the rotation Thompson - He and Brooks are the DTs of the future Warner - At least on special teams Akunne - Could easily be Orr's backup Stojkovic - Could be on both special teams and some OLB Swarn - He's good enough but how much will he be needed? Whitfield - He needs some PT since he looks like the man for 12. These look like the ones that are/will be ready by fall but it wouldn't surprise me that much to see others. Coach Mac has said that he will play a lot of people and I believe him. It's good for team morale and doesn't leave you totally without experience when your senior starters graduate (think defensive tackles).4 points

I've got a 4 wheel drive vehicle and do OK, but here in Parker County the intersections are iced over and people are skidding like crazy hitting each other or stop signs. To all our Mean Greeners, Visitors of GMG.com and even hater/posters: Stay home if you can and if you can't don't drive like we native Texans seem to think we can drive and that is like we do when we get inside those "bumper cars" at the State Fair of Texas or local county fairs. Dogs or Cats? Get em' a place out of the wind, an old blanket inside the garage and give them fresh water from your kitchen because all ponds or outside water outlets are frozen. It will be 8 degrees early tomorrow morning and that is cold, folks! Just, uh, sayin'... GMG! PS A red number for this thread? See what I mean, Harry? No rhyme or reason or anything close to how I think you originally intended it to be used in the first place. I like the idea I heard expressed recently of those who post red to have their ID or monikors shown so all on GMG.com can see those who would hide behind such otherwise. Then they can explain to all on the board the reason they posted red if they posted red any longer.4 points

McCarney's job is on the line if this Williams goes to Oregan or Standford, that would be a huge black eye for our program.4 points

I don't have to pretend, is was nearly 85 outside today. Welcome to South Florida. Spring Eligible players go to AQ. They also committed and made their decision before Coach Mac had figured out where the bathroom was in the Athletic Complex. Not one scouting service or recruiting guru expected us to sign a Spring DT transfer, including Vito and Coach Dan. We had a commit and he bounced. Such is life. We signed 2 quality DT's that have the size to come in and play, one being labeled an impact player and a streal for the program from AQ schools. We still adressed every position and every need on the team, and we're not even sure we're done with the class yet. Our graduating DT's were both late term signees, neither was here for the spring, and both came in and made an impact. But to you, our failure to recruit one type of DT, considering we did sign 2 and have 3 more on the roster already, makes this class incomplete? Interesting. Just sayin..3 points

This thread seems to have swerved all over the road. Being now an expert in icy and snowy driving...let ne see if I can turn into the slide and re-align this puppy: Post #6 - TTG states that since Northern Iowa lost, UNT now owns the 5th longest HOME winning streak in the nation...Duke being one of those ahead in terms of consecutive HOME wins. Post #7 - Texas Stranger suggest that TTG and the others should look at the Duke score, implying perhaps their home winning streak could be on the line. Post #8 - CMJ points out...though rather sarcastically (jerk)...that Duke is not playing at home tonight...rather is on the road, against St. John's, a Big East team from NYC. Posts #9-14 - Geography lessons - Duke is in North Carolina...St. John's is in NYC and they play many of their big home games at Madison Square Garden Post #15 - This was a non-conference game...St. John's is in the Big East, Duke in the ACC3 points

Not what I said, but keep rolling. What I said was that the one greatest need on this team has not been addressed by an immediate, impact JUCO like everyone on this board agreed needed to happen before they got all coked up on signing day blow. That doesn't mean this isn't a good class, or that I'm not excited that we signed some good high school guys that will really help the program in a couple of years, but it does mean that your wildly optimistic claim that "every need has been addressed" is South Florida, Sunshime-up-my-a$$ bulsh. Yes, I hope we sign a Spring JUCO graduate DT that helps immediately. I also hope I hook up Angelina Jolley when she is in town for Superbowl week. You know what those 2 have in common? They have not happened yet. So please, ease up on the "this is the greatest signing class in all of UNT history forever and ever" crap. Perspective, my friend, perspective.2 points

NO. It can only be replaced by a bigger road win...which has not happened. (Well, technically it did happen in 1988 in Austin.)2 points

Undersized and not fast enough, but somehow started 4 yrs straight, and put up nearly triple didget tackes and 14 sacks last yr. I think there coach said it all. This guy will be a major playmaker very soon, great comeback from missing out on Hunt. Gaines to the rescue yet again.2 points

Good question, but in the end, I don't think it makes that much of a difference. Kids can scan them and email them, they go take a picture of their signed LOI and send it to the school if they can't make it to their HS or a nearby office supply store. In the end, I don't see this as a problem we should anticipate having. Good question though.2 points

Really?? We are complaining about $10 now??? If you don't value your own product, how can you expect fans to?2 points

Some of these decommits hurt, but look beyond the disappointment to the reality - we're not just sitting over at the card table with the kids anymore with this coaching staff. When you go up against the Tim Billingses of the recruiting world, you are at the big boy table. To me, it's a good sign that guys as long in the tooth as Billings are having to fight us off for recruits. And, as far as Carr to Oklahoma State - those guys live in DFW. They have 11 commitments from DFW alone this year - 3 from Guyer! I chronicled late last season that Oklahoma State's starting defense was comprised of nine Texans, one kid from Mississippi, and one from South Carolina. These guys know their bread is buttered outside of the few prospects Oklahoma's small population can yield (there are twice are many people living in the DFW area as there are in the entire state of Oklahoma). But, McCarney and his crew are going toe-to-toe with Okie State, and that's a good sign. I truly tired of the "stealth" recruiting of Dickey and Dodge. "Secret recruits." Hey, in 2011, there are no secret recruits. Every last kid can sit in a computer lab at school or at home can make highlight videos of themselves and post them up on YouTube. To think we were going to "secret" away kids was always silly. I think we are long past the days of kids choosing Texas State baseball over us, or having secret recruiting battles with Eastern New Mexico State. I'm sorry to lose Hunt and Carr. But, this coaching staff is out there taking their cuts. This is Reggie Jackson swinging from the heels type of stuff this coaching staff is giving us. These guys aren't going to stand there and just watch the third strike go by. And, that makes me happy in the sports pants. Kerry Swarn is a homerun. The Sampson kid who decommitted Tulsa. The kid Warner from Pinkston going Tech to UNT. These aren't small potatoes. This is good stuff. Hunt and Carr would have made this class more amazing, yeah. But, look at this compared to what we had in 2007. I mean, we've got two scholarship players and one walk on remaining from 2007. Dodge bangers can cry and defend all they want, but they half-assed us all the way through December of 2006 messing around with high school playoffs. The hubris of the early Dodge era was sickening. These coaches McCarney hired have hit the ground running here, and it shows. They are young and hungry, but with enough experience to shake veterans like Billings and the boys up at Okie State while picking off a couple here and there from Mike Stoops and Tommy Tuberville's charges. That ain't bad, my Mean and Green friends. Not bad at all. Now, pass the gravy...these biscuits is getting cold!1 point

Over the past few years, UT extends and accepts verbals for their next class; 2-3 weeks after National Signing Day in February. All others, heretofore, appear to sit back and wait until they have the pick of the litter. Recruiting will soon be over for their 2012 class and they will move on the 2013 class. Did this practice finally backfire on them with the results of this past year? I can think of many kids that did not develop until their senior year and/or did not even start as a junior. Do you guys think that Gaines and McCarney will try to get more aggressive early on or just wait for the best leftovers? Lastly, what is the latest on the early signing period for HS football players? BTW, I'm not giving up on the 2011 class! Thanks1 point

This is a an oustanding pickup! Premium talent in the trenches. This guy was offered on a trip to Missouri and is coming to Denton. Last time I checked, Missouri has a pretty good offense that starts in the trenches with their athletic linemen who do a great job protecting the QB and creating massive running lanes the few times they do run. Cyril will be an impact player here. This is great stuff!1 point

Disappointing. I thought this part of the thread had real possibilities. Has anyone considered that this huge demand for democracy spreading across the middle east may have originated in Iraq? Now that should get some folks fired up.1 point

I guess I'm the perpetual optimist, but while we do need one or two more, but we did pick up two good DTs. Both had interests from big programs, and Brooks had offers from OSU and Arkansas (final BCS rankings 13 and 12, respectively). We will be thin there, but both (and Brooks especially) look like they have real potential to be impact players.1 point

Are we really nit picking of 2 players reported sizes. I could care less how tall Riley is? And same for Lance, he runs hard, breaks tackles and breaks long runs. Could giev two shits if he's 5'7 or 5'9. Ahmad Bradshaw is like 5'7 or so, and he seems to fair just fine playing on Sundays. Fact remains we started a QB under 6ft and had 2 WR last yr over 6ft, I'd like to see that addressed thru recruiting, and I think we've seen it has.1 point

90% of all HS game films sounds like bullshit. Either way, what a great job, watch tape all day, travel to watch games and meet players. Cool gig to say the least. I think it's interesting that TCU and stanford weren't even in the Top 50 recruiting classes, yet both finished the year in the top 5. It's more about what you do when you get them here than it is about getting them here. Chicken/Egg.1 point

Replaced with what, though? Would you want Mubarak gone even if it led to the formation of a new radical Islamist state that sponsored terrorism against the U.S.? We all would love to see the transition to a democracy in Egypt, but the odds of that happening are no better than the odds of an extremist Islamic state, at this point. Like Army of Dad said, the Devil you know may be better than the devil you don't.1 point

The "world"? Who exactly are you speaking about here? Because the "world" is made up of countries that always do what is in that country's best interest. Burying your head and encouraging the deposing of a dictator that has been willing to work with the US in the region in favor of God knows who or what is really, really naive. What we should be doing is saying the right thing in public (which we have so far), but working behind the scenes to make sure our national interest are met. Not so confident on the second part.1 point

The riots in Tehran were student initiated and also demanded democracy. The students were used by Khomeni to gain control of the government with a false promise of democracy that never came. Tunisians may want democracy, but others returning to that country may not. I hope not. Egyptians may want democracy, but this group and this man may have other plans. Close your eyes and wish it away all you want, but these are huge dangers facing both of these countries right now.1 point

Does anyone know the number of original students enrolled in UNT when Joshua Chilton started it in 1890 above that hardware store? For some reason I was thinking it was 7 but I can't find the answer anywhere. I've been on several UNT supported websites and they simply state that Chilton started the school in a rented second floor above a hardware store but make no mention to number of students. Thanks for the help.1 point

Wow...once again the whining starts. Look, I know, I know, everything the Mean Green does should be free, but UNT needs to pay it's coaches more (to be able to hire better coaches), add sports, build new facilities, play a tougher schedule, recruit all over the nation, increase scholarship levels in non-revenue sports, etc., etc., etc. The state won't pay for all this great stuff. The athletic dept. budget must find a way to cover it all. This may be a small thing, but, unfortunately, it is necessary in today's financial climate. The budget cuts will hit all areas of campus including athletics. While I don't love shelling out the $10 (plus the cost of the beers I will consume at the event), it's not a very high price to pay for a great evening of Mean green entertainment. It would cost as much or more to go to a movie, and the signing event will be so much more fun. The benefit to the Mean Green Club member is the 50% discount off the price of admission. I'm sorry if some don't see this as the decent benefit that I see it, but it's hard to argue that there is no benefit to being a Mean Green Club member in this case. I get it, some have other places they need to put that $10 or $20 other than paying to attend a signing day event. That's fair. And, some will now not care to attend because of the fee, that's fair as well. I just see it as one more way to help the athletic dept. in its attempts to move this program into the days of being a "champagne program" rather than a "beer program". Although I much prefer beer over champagne when I am consuming adult beverages. Hope to see a big crowd for the event. Anyone wanting to go that is not a Mean Green Club member, I am happy to have you as my guest so you can pat the member rate of $10. Just PM me and let me know. See you on the 2nd. GO MEAN GREEN!1 point

Damn, what a great hire, publicity wise. Four straight bowl wins wouldn't have garnered us this much attention. When TD comes through with the wins this hire may go down as one of the all time greatest at North Texas. Rick1 point
