Some of these decommits hurt, but look beyond the disappointment to the reality - we're not just sitting over at the card table with the kids anymore with this coaching staff. When you go up against the Tim Billingses of the recruiting world, you are at the big boy table. To me, it's a good sign that guys as long in the tooth as Billings are having to fight us off for recruits. And, as far as Carr to Oklahoma State - those guys live in DFW. They have 11 commitments from DFW alone this year - 3 from Guyer! I chronicled late last season that Oklahoma State's starting defense was comprised of nine Texans, one kid from Mississippi, and one from South Carolina. These guys know their bread is buttered outside of the few prospects Oklahoma's small population can yield (there are twice are many people living in the DFW area as there are in the entire state of Oklahoma). But, McCarney and his crew are going toe-to-toe with Okie State, and that's a good sign. I truly tired of the "stealth" recruiting of Dickey and Dodge. "Secret recruits." Hey, in 2011, there are no secret recruits. Every last kid can sit in a computer lab at school or at home can make highlight videos of themselves and post them up on YouTube. To think we were going to "secret" away kids was always silly. I think we are long past the days of kids choosing Texas State baseball over us, or having secret recruiting battles with Eastern New Mexico State. I'm sorry to lose Hunt and Carr. But, this coaching staff is out there taking their cuts. This is Reggie Jackson swinging from the heels type of stuff this coaching staff is giving us. These guys aren't going to stand there and just watch the third strike go by. And, that makes me happy in the sports pants. Kerry Swarn is a homerun. The Sampson kid who decommitted Tulsa. The kid Warner from Pinkston going Tech to UNT. These aren't small potatoes. This is good stuff. Hunt and Carr would have made this class more amazing, yeah. But, look at this compared to what we had in 2007. I mean, we've got two scholarship players and one walk on remaining from 2007. Dodge bangers can cry and defend all they want, but they half-assed us all the way through December of 2006 messing around with high school playoffs. The hubris of the early Dodge era was sickening. These coaches McCarney hired have hit the ground running here, and it shows. They are young and hungry, but with enough experience to shake veterans like Billings and the boys up at Okie State while picking off a couple here and there from Mike Stoops and Tommy Tuberville's charges. That ain't bad, my Mean and Green friends. Not bad at all. Now, pass the gravy...these biscuits is getting cold!7 points

I've got a 4 wheel drive vehicle and do OK, but here in Parker County the intersections are iced over and people are skidding like crazy hitting each other or stop signs. To all our Mean Greeners, Visitors of GMG.com and even hater/posters: Stay home if you can and if you can't don't drive like we native Texans seem to think we can drive and that is like we do when we get inside those "bumper cars" at the State Fair of Texas or local county fairs. Dogs or Cats? Get em' a place out of the wind, an old blanket inside the garage and give them fresh water from your kitchen because all ponds or outside water outlets are frozen. It will be 8 degrees early tomorrow morning and that is cold, folks! Just, uh, sayin'... GMG! PS A red number for this thread? See what I mean, Harry? No rhyme or reason or anything close to how I think you originally intended it to be used in the first place. I like the idea I heard expressed recently of those who post red to have their ID or monikors shown so all on GMG.com can see those who would hide behind such otherwise. Then they can explain to all on the board the reason they posted red if they posted red any longer.6 points

As a student here at UNT i like to use my resources, so last night i decided to go play some ball at the Rec (just like i do just about every night). Anyways me and my friend were there and he spotted Tony, after being hesitant I decided what the heck i should ask him to play. I went over and introduced myself and told him how happy I was he picked UNT, he was very nice and told me it was the best fit for him, i went on to ask him when he would play (already knew answer was just making sure) and he told me after 1st semester like all of us already know. For the game, wow! stupid athletic, he might have been going 5% yet was a freak athlete. he put on a show for sure.Between legs,360ed, and a free throw line dunk. It was stupid crazy. PS: Kederick was there last night and we talked and i asked him what was up and he said our minds have been on the Tourney and we aint taking care of business. He also said he cant wait to prove all the haters wrong and told me a hot streak is coming. Him and Tony seemed to be very close too. They talked for a good hour about coach Jones and just basketball in general. It was a great night for sure... Sorry wish i had little more info but anyways GMG!!6 points

Egypt has little to do with the current or past administration... truth is, Egypt has been a powder keg for well over twenty years... After Sadat was assassinated, I was surprised their wasn't a large uprising. Your statements read like the type of reporting which tries to tie unrelated topics together, a la FOX (Egypt + American healthcare... really...)3 points

This board is not about a popularity contest. I have all the friends and confidants I need or want. I think its more a matter of maturity (or lack thereof) or accepting what some know is the truth in many cases and just cannot handle it as presented and as far as UNT is concerned...I've gotten all the awards & recognition from my alma mater that I want and I didn't ask or campaign for that one. While we still have the freedom of the internet, I'm sure I will still express my views whether anyone who would hide behind a red number likes them or not. GMG!3 points

This is a game-changer folks. And not just in the obvious way. The English language periodically changes, words take on new meanings due to major events. Mark this day down, because 4-5 years from now, one of you will be somewhere, and someone will say to you "You got a lemon." This will be followed by a hi-five because it will mean a good thing.3 points

Including FIU. Knock em all you want...they played football in December while we stayed home. Just wanted to remind that we need to beat the Sun Belt teams before we declare ourselves too good to be associated with them.3 points

In football, when North Texas goes on the road and beats a .500 team from a power conference, people still talk about it as the crowning achievement of the athletics program 36 years later. In basketball, when North Texas goes on the road and beats a .500 team from a power conference (by more than anyone has in 20 years)... They aren't "good" and our team is a disappointment. Beating Tech and LSU is a big deal, whether they make the NCAA tournament or not. These recent losses suck and they're very disappointing, but beating two power conference teams in one year is still a major achievement.3 points

Great looking commit. But who writes these goofy evaluations? If he's the fastest damn player on the field how do you know, and is it even worth wasting the time to mention that he shows hip stiffness transitioning to run vertically? What??????? Rick3 points

We're paying the price for not filling all our ships this past off season, which was a major concern by many going into it. Rick3 points

You guys don't "sweat" UNT because you don't have the balls to play us. You can come back with whatever douchey remark you want, but that is the truth. A post by you over here that actually contributes something is rare. Most of the time you just use them to take backhanded cheap shots at UNT Athletics and/or academics, and worst of all our potential student-athletes. What is the most absurd thing, is SMU people saying what an embarrasment it is for UNT to be letting these kids in to school, and it being a "blackball" for conference realignment. It really just proves the ignorance of you people when we have higher academic standards than several CUSA schools. But hey, you're right. Clearly it is much better to be associated with a hypocritical religious (not a knock on religion, just SMU) school that is famous not for its successes or good deeds, but for its blatantly unethical behavior, and most of all its baffling epidemic of unbridled arrogance.3 points

Health Care Debate...not the first ruling: 2 for, 2 against...right down appointed political lines. Shocking development, really. As for your "paragraph" or "statement" on Egypt...I mean, there are unintelligible ramblings...and then there is this. Seriously...absolutely nobody, not the US, not Europe, not Ben Ali and Mubarak, not the protesters themselves could've had any cognition as to the scale of what is currently brewing. For anyone to attempting to lay blame or criticize, really anyone, for the unexpected scale of these events is beyond lunacy. There's partisan-ized opinion...then theres just insanity.2 points

The news of Mitchell hit ponyfans.com and immediately it was "the NCAA is after him for forged transcripts" and "I bet he works out for NBA scouts and never sees the floor at UNT". Love it, love it, love it.2 points

the Discover Denton link on the North Texas Superbowl site is broken (it points to "dicoverdenton.com" instead of diScoverdenton.com), and it has been that way since this link was posted here. Hope they didn't pay too much for it.2 points

Regarding your first paragraph. This is pretty funny coming from a school that graduated Eric Dickerson, Carl Wright, etc... that can't properly use the English language. The NCAA mandates eligibility to play based upon academics, not on whether someone can enter a school. I bet he could have done the same at Missouri, SMU, etc... but chose NT because it is less expensive considering he would have to pay out of state tuition at Missouri or private school tuition at SMU. People that make fun of NT academically do so because they are ignorant and don't have their facts straight. Your second paragraph is laughable. SMU doesn't play NT, because they don't want to, are afraid to, or whatever. Trust me, we are up for a game at any time and our administration doesn't run away when things don't turn out the way we want them to or is we are having a down year. Must be tough to look in the mirror some days.2 points

Call me cynical, but this is one of the poorest written and researched articles I've seen in a long time. She could've formed better sentences with a big pack of those refrigerator magnets with which you spell out non-sequitor, often sexual or poop related, phrases.2 points

Call me cynical, but I just don't trust an organization that believes that any religion has a political role in society. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with the asshats that make up the Texas Legislature and the Texas State Board of Education.2 points

Emmitt, I remember when you used to be a genteel, laid back, happy-go-luck type of guy who did not microscope everything that anyone posted. Now you've become the Ralph Nader of GoMeanGreen.com threads and posts? Actually, I don't think an explanation is in order on this but I will try anyway: The link from the first post of this thread came from the official Super Bowl website and was not pre-fabricated by anyone associated with North Texas or Denton or Denton County. The City of Denton was part (albeit I would think a limited part) of the massive planning of this enourmous North Texas Super Bowl of which the town of our alma mater's location according to media releases is going to benefit from economically and is one reason they, ie, the official NT Super Bowl website officials gave Denton a nice (single page) web page and recognition for their part in all this that will happen this next Sunday. Even our UNT Symphony Orchestra played a big part in one of the first North Texas Super Bowl events a few weeks ago. I still wub' ya' Emmitt (in a Christian-like sort of way, of course), but I just don't understand the nit-picking that happens on this board (from others, too, not just you) from what seem like pretty basic topics thats not mean't to be controversial at all. Let's all have fun with GoMeanGreen.com no matter how innocent or maybe sometimes controversial the subject might be. Being UNT alums and Mean Green fans for years and for some decades, we deserve a little fun more than those from most other schools that seem to have had a decade in and decade out smooth road to travel. So...can't we just all agree to disagree w/o severing the jugular? GMG!2 points

No I definately agree, but mainly because of the sickening low expectations people often have of our teams around here. Rick2 points

The fallout is where and when international attention needs to come in. The regime change itself, and the fact that it has sprung entirely from within, is good and should be verbally and morally supported (much like the Tunisian revolt).1 point

This. Concern needs to start right now with the 79 million Egyptians and what is best for them...and that is an end to Mubarak's rule.1 point

I avoid the interwebs as much as possible on the weekends. Somehow we champion the over-throw of Ben Ali in Tunisia as a demonstration of real Democracy in action...yet solely because Mubarak has been somewhat U.S. friendly for the past 30 years we're willing to ignore his corruption and mis-treatment of the Egyptian people...and then speculate that these protests are a covert attempt by Islamic extremists to over-throw the Egyptian government. These protests were going to happen no matter what occurred in Tunisia when Mubarak was up for re-"election" in October...the ouster of Ben Ali simply accelerated the time-table. Their foundation...and now subsequent protests in Yemen...is fundamentally the same as in Tunisia, a want for legitimate Democracy and equitable treatment.1 point

Tough one to take, but the "good news" is that it all comes down to the SBC tournament. Win out and the seed gets better, and I guess that's the goal now. Get the best seed we can, and win the tournament. However, this team must find a way to play some defense. I do think they can, but I don't think that has been "top of mind" with this team from day one. All is certainly not lost, but the team does need to get a sense of urgency going for the stretch run to the tournament. See you at the Super Pit Thursday...need to keep that home win streak going! GO MEAN GREEN!1 point

You couldnt be more right! The potential signing of the most highly rated player (in any sport) in the history of this school is boring. Getting a guy who is touted as being NBA ready on our campus isnt important. The fact that the local and national media, even if only for a year, would have interest in our program is soooo overrated. ESPN games from the pit arent worth getting Vito's panties all in a wad!!! Raising or basketball team's recruiting profile sucks. We certainly shouldnt be excited to potentially put our first NBA lottery pick in the media guide. Making more money for just making the NCAA tournament than winning the N.O. Bowl is meaningless for a program with our vast resources. You are so dumb. You are really dumb...for real.1 point

I agree with you 100%, but that type of structure will require tens of millions of dollars to construct. In the long run, that's what we should have. But.....as much as I think Central Florida's "erector set" football stadium is cheezy compared to our new stadium, they seem to be doing quite well with theirs. My point is, we need a baseball program to make our "sports portfolio" more attractive to potential conferences. If recycling the end zone seating, or some portion of it will make a baseball stadium and program a closer reality, then I'm all for it. Maybe a combination of concrete seating with chairbacks for a premium section of seating, and the zone bleachers along 1st and 3rd base sides. I have no idea if this is feasible with the curviture of the seats themselves. If we can save $250K in construction costs, why not try it? We need baseball at UNT and we may have to think out of the box to get it sooner than later.1 point
