As a student here at UNT i like to use my resources, so last night i decided to go play some ball at the Rec (just like i do just about every night). Anyways me and my friend were there and he spotted Tony, after being hesitant I decided what the heck i should ask him to play. I went over and introduced myself and told him how happy I was he picked UNT, he was very nice and told me it was the best fit for him, i went on to ask him when he would play (already knew answer was just making sure) and he told me after 1st semester like all of us already know. For the game, wow! stupid athletic, he might have been going 5% yet was a freak athlete. he put on a show for sure.Between legs,360ed, and a free throw line dunk. It was stupid crazy. PS: Kederick was there last night and we talked and i asked him what was up and he said our minds have been on the Tourney and we aint taking care of business. He also said he cant wait to prove all the haters wrong and told me a hot streak is coming. Him and Tony seemed to be very close too. They talked for a good hour about coach Jones and just basketball in general. It was a great night for sure... Sorry wish i had little more info but anyways GMG!!17 points

This all bodes well for the future. Torrance Carr...I hope this kid end up on the defensive side of the ball. I love the thought of a 6-3/220 pound safety patrolling the backfield or creeping up to the line for blitzes. It goes without saying that I'm still just giddy about getting Kerry Swarn. A bona fide Stoops brother secondary recruit ends up in Denton! This is a good sign. I also like the LB Derek Akunne from North Garland. Linebackers at 225-240 with 4.5 speed are a good good for us. This is TCU/OU type of stuff the way they shift recruits around to get the right speed on the defensive side of the ball. Josh Hunt...another speedy linebacker. Freddie Warner...a kid who once held an offer and committed to defensive-minded Tommy Tuberville. A year ago, I'd have never believed we'd be swiping recruits from defensive-minded coaches likes Tuberville and Mike Stoops. And, yet here we are! Would have liked to more DTs on the JUCO front. But, I'm going to have to simply trust Dan McCarney and his years of coaching DTs, and hope that his experience can trump the lack of depth for one season. We're not just hitchhiking anymore, we're riding!6 points

I was the friend with sparkman, and there is a couple corrections I'd like to make, but won't. you know what I'm talking about, Kevin. However, about Tony Mitchell. Not only is he huge, but imagine someone like Kedrick Hogans handling the ball like Josh White or Domo. His handles are something few have commented on, and I'm here to say I was taken by surprise! Not only that, he can hit a 3 ball from anywhere he wants. From beyond NBA range, the kid would consistently knock them down anytime I would kick it out to him. His stride is impeccable. His speed is deceiving. He was getting around smaller (6'0) guards from behind the free throw line in TWO STRIDES! a kid actually called traveling, but then revoked his statement when he realized how long Tony's stride REALLY is. Not only that, NOBODY COULD SCORE ON HIM! His defense was outstanding! He is EASILY the best basketball player I have EVER played with/seen play, outside of the NBA. This kid is remarkable, and I CANNOT WAIT to see him in a MEAN GREEN uniform next December. Also, it was really nice to see Kedrick up there encouraging his future teammate. He walked onto the court and said, "there's my teammate! my bro! it's great to see him up here!" after our 4th straight win, Tony went and sat next to Ked, and they left the gym together talking about the basketball team, class, and other things. I was quite delighted to see Ked supporting Tony like that. Once again, I CAN'T WAIT to see our team next year! GMG GMG GMG!4 points

Alot of kids get caught up in the Texas hype, but then go down and taste the poop sandwich that is Austin and don't like it. I like that the Longhorns were 5-7 this year. They are cow vomit in my book. One of the highlights of my sports life will always be the 2010 college football season wherein Iowa State and Baylor shat upon Texas in Austin on back-to-back weekends. It is no wonder this kid is leaving. I'd leave to. But, since I have a brain in my head, I'd have never gone down there in the first place. Nothing but a bunch of grass-smoking weirdos who think good music begins and ends with the likes of Willie Nelson. Here's another reason he may have wanted to leave...the linemen churlishly assault the poor defensive backs after interceptions. Even the referees had to flag this behavior!4 points

Smoaky Chapel Hill's Lairamie Lee switched his commitment from UT-San Antonio to North Texas on Sunday. Lee recorded 178-Tackles, 13-TFL, 6-Sacks, 5-PBU, 10-Caused Fumbles, 4-Recovered Fumbles and 3-Interceptions on defense, and ran for 1,443-yards on 163-carries and 23-TD's along with 15-catches for 212-yards and 1-TD on offense.4 points

You guys don't "sweat" UNT because you don't have the balls to play us. You can come back with whatever douchey remark you want, but that is the truth. A post by you over here that actually contributes something is rare. Most of the time you just use them to take backhanded cheap shots at UNT Athletics and/or academics, and worst of all our potential student-athletes. What is the most absurd thing, is SMU people saying what an embarrasment it is for UNT to be letting these kids in to school, and it being a "blackball" for conference realignment. It really just proves the ignorance of you people when we have higher academic standards than several CUSA schools. But hey, you're right. Clearly it is much better to be associated with a hypocritical religious (not a knock on religion, just SMU) school that is famous not for its successes or good deeds, but for its blatantly unethical behavior, and most of all its baffling epidemic of unbridled arrogance.3 points

When they hired this guy, they said he was an "ace recruiter" but damn, this guy is exceeding all expectations. He's picking guys off from BCS-AQ schools like it's nothing. I am certainly glad he's a part of the Mean Green Coaching Staff.2 points

I celebrate what's going on in Egypt. Anytime people stand up for what they believe, take to the streets, and oust a dictator, I'm on board. This rebellion isn't religious in nature. How it looks after remains to be seen. But right now, it isn't any of our damned business. Worried about oil? Stop being dependent on it. Find another source (like in our own back yard) or find another sustainable form of energy in our own backyard. That our first concern is how this impacts our own interests is absurd. They want representation in the decisions of their country. Who can fault them for that? Good for the Egyptian people, I say. This seems like something most Americans could identify with and celebrate.2 points

Ya, I was a little slow on gertting this one going. Add to that the disappointment that it took you 13 posts to become involved. If only this was another conference realignment thread.2 points

Brian Shaw...former Boston Celtic, Orlando Magic and LA Laker shooting guard? So many other factors played into what Iran became and has become and subsequent Western tension/perception than simply the over-throw of the Shah. I'd also say "stability" is also a very subjective term in this case... These protest may well now include some Islamic fundamentalist groups...but they were haphazardly organized, largely by students and the working class via social networking sites...and have gained the support and participation of many Christians in the area. These are not religious protests. To say there was any sort of organized, fundamentalist movement is fallacy. If the U.S. government supported the display of Democracy in Tunisia, it has to support the display of Democracy in Egypt. If our interests are more vital in Egypt, then we certainly need to be more pro-active diplomatically than need would merit in Tunisia...however Ben Ali and Mubarak are essentially one in the same...as are their (attempted) ousters.1 point

Don't really disagree with you that much, other than to point out that any time there is unrest in previous stable muslim countries, there is ALWAYS a risk that if the government is deposed, the new government will be a fundamentalist Islamic government. Egypt is more concerning than Tunisia because of the national interests of the U.S. Although they are not the only factions involved, fundamental muslim groups are VERY involved in these protests, and will make a huge push to control the government if the current government falls. People really need to research the fall of the Shaw of Iran. What started out as a push for democracy was hijacked by the muslim extremist, and we all know the ending to that story.1 point

Egypt controls the Suez Canal, through which millions of gallons of oil are shipped through every month. Markets are reactive. The price of oil is up over half a dollar a barrell just with the unrest. If this government falls, I would expect a $10 a barrell jump. As for those who don't think Egypt could become a muslim state, why don't you review the history of Iran. Huge parallels.1 point

Not that I really had anything to do with it, but I did recommend Lairamie Lee to one of the UNT Associate ADs a couple of months ago and asked him to pass it on to the coaching staff. He may have already been on UNT’s radar. I was sorry to see him initally commit to UTSA because I thought he had the skills to be recruited at a higher-level football program. I have watched this kid all season (I live in Chapel Hill, which is just outside of Tyler) and he has the skills to be quite a player for the Mean Green. His leadership skills are great – he was the emotional leader of a team that went to the Division One 3-A state championship game this year; he is a heckuva running back, and an even better linebacker. If he has actually committed to UNT, I could not be happier. He is a winner!1 point

UTEP and UH also have lower admission standards than UNT, as does Marshall. UTEP is virtually open admissions and UH has had lower admission standards than UNT at least since 1996. That will change in 2012 when UH raises theirs in two phases (increases yet again in 2014). We need to be increasing our standards as well, but it's not hard to conduct some quick and easy research and find that UNT's stated standards for general, unconditional freshman admission are the fifth highest in the state for public universities, behind UT, TAMU, UTD, and TTU. But knowing any of that wouldn't fit in with SMU's preferred view of North Texas. So they remain ignorant a$$holes.1 point

Someone asked why Perry should have refused the government money...well, today's Dallas Morning news article offers just one example of how more problems can be created than solved when one takes federal handouts. Headlines read "DISD Plans to Fire 290". Those 290 positions were all created and funded by government stimulus money. DISD apparently thought the "handouts" were going to continue forever, but have now found out otherwise and will be firing all 290 that were hired with the "stimulus" money. They couldn't even see the ":handwriting on the wall" it appears and made absolutely no contingency plans (other than firing those hired) if, in fact, the funds were not renewed. Now they blame the government for not continuing the handout. Seems to me that DISD (Dallas) would have been better off either refusing the funds in the first place (and making the adjustments they should have been making at the time to budgets) or made some contingency plans such as not filling every open position in case some or all of the funds were not renewed...I guess the wonderful DISD leadership thought the funds would become another government entitlement and just keep coming forever. Were there strings attached to the federal stimulus funds? You bet your bottom dollar there were and now the problem of taking the funds in the first place have come home to roost. Just putting off a problem and placing a federal "gift" of funds band-aid on a problem does not solve it or mean leadership is acting in a fiscally responsible way. Now watch all the crying from DISD leadership about how they will have to make the tough decisions and people will lose their jobs! Amazing lack of foresight and planning.1 point

Cool. I thought I might have remembered his name coming up somewhere before. I really can't be bothered to use the search function or anything useful like that. Also, I'm not really one for fixing broken links, so this thread will probably just die a slow and painful death. I love you all.1 point
