Fact of the story is he was under no obligation to stay. College scholarships are year to year. Schools can cancel them. Players can leave. This quitter BS is ridiculous. Did anyone call McCarney a quitter for leaving Florida? No. He had a better opportunity elsewhere, and Dodge thinks the opportunity is better at McNeese. That's his prerogative. Slamming him for it shows some pretty galling amnesia for what he did while he was here (and the injuries he suffered doing it).5 points

Being new to UNT here is my prespective on Riley Dodge. From what I have pick up from this message board the ONE & ONLY reason he came to UNT was to play for his father who was the Head Coach. Just take a moment and think how hard it was for him after his father was fired, to then go out each and every day and give his very best for the same group that fired a man that I know was very dear to his heart. Also even if he would have stayed at UNT, how would have most people have remembered him. My guess would be as the son of the coach we had to fire, instead on just Riley Dodge one mighty good football player. One thing I do know, and remember until just a little over a month ago this young man was just another name on a roster to me. he is no quitter. Best of luck at McNeese State Riley Dodge.4 points

These numbers are up to date through the ASU/Lamar game on Monday night. Western Kentucky is still in the overall lead, and still has the most highly attended game of the year (Louisville). Denver, with their 6200+ crowd for FIU has taken over the top spot for the most highly attended SBC conference game. North Texas is pushing MTSU for second place, averaging just under 200 fans less per game. Denver is also on the rise, looking like they may have a shot at the top 3 in attendance if they continue to be successful. FAU is still in last place. The Winter Holiday numbers are FINAL. Western Kentucky wins that category. MTSU came close as the WKU attendances have declined significantly recently, but WKU held on. FAU once again came in last place. ASU and UALR are leading in the SBC home attendance with North Texas just 400 or so behind. The shocker here is that WKU is all the way down in 5th place. AND...in the most unshocking piece of data, FIU leads SBC away game attendance. Apparently people enjoy yelling things at Isaiah Thomas.3 points

I haven't seen this sort of misinterpretation of a message board post since the Mexia City Council and Chamber of Commerce contacted me to discuss North Texas-related development plans.3 points

103. North Texas (3-9) 2010 CFN Final Ranking: 99 2010 Record: 3-9 2010 CFN Preseason Rank: 102 CFN 2010 Preseason Prediction: 3-9 2009 Final Ranking: 110 2008 Final Ranking: 116 UNT might have the best coach in the league in former Iowa State head man Dan McCarney, and there's a chance for a night-and-day improvement if everyone can stay healthy. The Mean Green lost 12 starters to injuries in 2010, and seven of them come back to an already veteran squad. America, get ready to know the name Lance Dunbar; he could lead the nation in rushing with McCarney sure to feed him the ball. ranking. http://cfn.scout.com/2/1040171.html3 points

GMG Guide: "Quitter" - a player who leaves North Texas before their time here is done. Not a personal attack. Just a statement of fact of a player's status for any team we care about. "Mean Green Athlete" - includes players who transferred to UNT to play for the only team that matters. I hope that clears things up a bit.3 points

What is the kid supposed to say midseason when his Dad is fired? Tell everyone you are out at the end of the year? No. I guess he could have used the old "I'm just concentrating on the remaining games of this season before I think about next year" quote, but that is basically saying you are out of town at the end of the season. For those of you that thought he would stay here after his dad was let go (really the only reason he came to UNT), weren't you just a little naive? The moment Dad was fired, Riley knew he wouldn't be back, but he also knew he had a team to lead. The kid did what he should have done under those circumstances. This should be a dead subject, as he is now a McNeese Cowboy and will not graduate from UNT. Why don't we all just move on without calling him a quitter?3 points

Mark, I keep looking outside to see what color the sky is because I keep agreeing with you...and no more so than in this situation. Let me remind everyone, WE HAVE HAD MANY PLAYERS TRANSFER TO NORTH TEXAS THROUGH THE DECADES AND WE NEVER THOUGHT TO CALL THEM QUITTERS. As I've pointed out many times Jordan Case, one of our great all-time QB's and one of movers and shakers on the Stadium committee was a TRANSFER from Sul Ross University. Anyone going to go to the banquet this Friday and look him up, and then call him a quitter? Julian Herron is currently on our roster and is a transfer from SMU. Are some of you going to go up to him after the games this year and say "nice game....not bad for a quitter". Alex Lott was a regular contributer to our football team these last few years. And he was a TRANSFER from Texas Lutheran. Anyone want to call him a quitter? Have we just totally lost our ability to think logically? geezzzz.3 points

I have absolutely no problems with this article or the quote from Riley. I do believe he did give 100% every time he took the field and it is no secret that some people just don't care. The young man is only telling the truth from his perspective and relaying what his thoughts are regarding his decision. I would imagine that any D-1 QB in the country could say the same thing at times during their careers whether they elected to stay at one school or transfer. The idea that some people would stoop to the childish level of calling him a quitter says more about the people calling him names than it does this young man. It is exactly correct in thinking those people do not matter to him one iota. I do think it is time to move along. Coach Dodge and Riley will neither be part of the 2011 edition of the Mean Green. Best to wish them both well and move on to supporting those who will be part of the Mean Green's success in 2011. GO MEAN GREEN...too many good things happening for the Mean Green these days to focus on "what might have been".3 points

This is what the bracket would look like if the Tourney started today. We are basically 1/3 of the way through the conference slate, so I don't think it is too early to see how things are starting to shape up. Thankfully there are still 10/11 games left depending on the team, and all this can mix up a bit, because right now this is pretty much (in my opinion) the worst case scenario for North Texas. 1. Not getting a bye, 2. playing a potentially dangerous WKU team in the first round, and 3. playing FIU in the quarterfinal... All of this can start to turn around though with a win @ Monroe tomorrow night. For those who are curious, if the women's tourney started today, North Texas (2-4) would play South Alabama (3-3) in Round 1, with Denver (3-2) waiting for the winner in the quarterfinal.2 points

If we don't get a bid to move up in the conference world, then we need to do whatever keeps us in a league with Western Kentucky. They are the only program with legitimate expectations of success and the support to see it through. They strive for excellence, not presence and adequacy, and having them as a stalking horse is invaluable. Either we match their program's commitment and improve, or at least we'll be losing to a school that actually does athletics right. If WKU is in the Belt, we should stay in the Belt. If they go elsewhere, we should try to stick with them. Unless we get to move up, we need to align ourselves with schools that actually give a damn and put forth the effort and resources to succeed. Geography is less important to me (assuming we're not flying to Alaska or Hawaii to play water polo) than administrative competence and alumni support/expectations. 1) MWC 2) C-USA 3) Stick with WKU and challenge each other to new heights2 points

GMG.COM basketball game in support of the UNT Cheer Squad is "ON". Looks like the date will be SATURDAY, MARCH 26th with tip off at 1PM. The location is shaping up to be the GYM at the MEAN GREEN VILLAGE where the VV games are help and where UNT holds its basketball camps. Thank you RV for offering to help with this. As we can use that facility free of charge, we will be able to increase the funds we are able to provide the Cheer Squad. ALL proceeds...that's 100% over any costs...will go directly to the benefit of the UNT Cheer Squad. Cost to play is $25.00 and includes a highly sought after souviner players shirt...a real collectors item as you can say you have a copy of #1...there is only one "first annual" you know! We will have a post-game/s party at a local watering hole where awards and other activities will take place. Many more details to follow...but check your calendars...let me know if you want to play, your shirt size and some personal stats as to height, playing experience, male or female (yes, this is a co-ed event...if we get some ladies who want to play). Let's get this on!!!!!!! First annual GMG.com BB game...get in now so you can have bragging rights for years to come...yes, we need donations and sponsors as well as players. If anyone would like to donate let me know, and very importantly...if you work for a firm, own a business or know a business who would like to help sponsor the game THAT would be a home run! I will go to a UNT fund, so it is all legit!2 points

Do you have "an article from a real newspaper" to back up your claim? Did the MWC Comissioner not say that they want to keep a presence in Texas? Are they not meeting in just a few days with expansion on the agenda? Did UTEP's president not say that they want to stay in a conference with other Texas schools? I'm not saying something will happen, but you absolutely say that nothing will. How is your speculation different from anybody else?2 points

I hope Riley does well at McNeese State. It's a shame that some fans keep calling him a quitter. Players and coaches move around all the time in college football. If someone has a better opportunity elsewhere, we shouldn't be so hard on them for taking it.2 points

If you've never come to the signing date event, that is open to the public....it is great. Coach Mc will show videos of all the players that we've signed. He will talk about each individual recruit, as well. It's also a great place to meet and get to know the coaches. In past years....the entire coaching staff has been there. This year, the event will be at a banquet room at the new Holiday Inn and Suites. I've been told that this room will accomodate 300. There will be hors d'oeuvres ....and a cash bar. The start time hasn't been settled on....but will probably be somewhere in the 6-6:30 range. Will update more as it gets closer. I highly recommend this event.1 point

If Riley stayed, the best-case scenario is this: He starts at quarterback, leads the team to a great season and everybody uses that great season as "proof" that his dad isn't a good coach. That would be an uncomfortable position to be in. I would have liked to see him stay, but I can see why he'd be looking elsewhere.1 point

So here is Keenum's Bio: Keenum Bio He RS first year just like Tune and both got injured this past season, so why would Keenum get a MRS but not Tune? Are we just incompetent when filling out these forms or is it typically NCAA BS? Guess Tune should have gone on a drunken rage looking for his poor lil pup and destroy a few bar doors.1 point

If it is a legit 4.6 then, yes. Average NFL combine 40 for strong safeties is 4.57. Roy Williams ran a 4.53 according to his 2002 draft profile, and he was pretty quick for a safety in his early years in the NFL. Safeties don't have to have CB speed because the play 20 yards off the line. That being said, if it's a high school coach with a stopwatch (and a desire to help promote their player), clocking that 40, then it might be a different story... Either way though, he's a beast and is a great pickup for the Mean Green.1 point

I have no intention of trying to insult anyone specific on this forum. However, it is always a byproduct of actually telling the truth. And the truth is...... You guys would be just fine with a "quitter" from another school that would COME TO UNT. ESPECIALLY if said player was the integrel part of a winning team. I wish I could see all those posts now about how glad we were that Tyler Stratford had left OU. THAT seemed to be ok with everybody. In the future...will you be rejecting tranfers because of their obvious lack of integrity...why would we want them on OUR field ??? After all, they committed one time to somebody..and since that didnt work out...due to health, finacial aid, coaching changes,etc...that all wont matter ! They should just quit and give up their sport all together. Aw HELL NO, dont come to THIS school.....We'd rather you just quit and shrink into nothingness than to try and make the best of it. How dare you as a player..try to transfer and actually play...when you can stay here and ride the bench just so you wont be called "Quitter". Kids, Riley, who ta hell ever !!!! I've been there......go where you can play...for as long as you can play !!! You haven't let ANYBODY down. And if you did...they'll have to just get over it and move on to another kid to berate.1 point
-
I'll be rooting for Mcneese State next season. Good Luck Riley! Do I think it is the right decision to leave? No. I wish he would stay and honor his committment...mostly because I think he could stil be succesful here...but with all of the injuries, and losing, and his dad being fired, I completely understand why he would want to start over somewhere, and I wish him the best.1 point
-
Thats a pretty good question. Maybe we can get a math major to bust out some calculus on that, but I think that would equal not quitting (i.e. doing what you said you would do). We started with Riley: quitting = stop doing something you committed to do however, if RIley: quit quitting = quit stop doing something you committed to do I think we can cancel some things on both sides of the equation, to get: quit quitting = quit stop doing something you committed to do so you are left with = doing something you committed to do I think it works out nicely. Riley no longer is no longer called a quitter, he gets to play for the Mean Green, gets a better degree. Everyone wins.1 point

Recruiting Denton players should be easier not harder than other communities. This I want to leave town bit, may be true in many cases but not all. IMO the problem in Denton is that in general the NT program has been looked down on by many of the community. North Texas is not big time, heck they were never even in the SWC. Instead of embracing the local college, it is way too cool to put them down. It should be viewed as a privilege to have a major university in your city; Denton in fact has two. NT and TWU are taken for granted and not generally worthy of any local support by the vast majority of residents. A good case in point is the NT BB program which seldom loses at home, yet my guess is draws less than a hundred a game of Denton citizens that are not affiliated in some manner with the school. McCarney should make sure that every Denton area players who is good enough gets recruited by NT. Just like any other Texas area, NT will probably not get any of the first tier recruits; but there is no reason that NT should not be a the top of the list for players just below the Big 12 level. For every player that wants to leave Denton, I would bet there is one that would like to stay close to friends and family. I doubt there are as many true fb division prospects in Denton as many like to believe, however I don't see any negatives from pursuing those players.1 point

I was sad to see the A-1 Thick and Hearty Burger leave Whataburger. As far as good burgers go, I felt like it at least had another couple years of eligibility. Fan feedback has been mixed between folks wishing the burger luck in future endeavors and those that are ready to stop hearing about Thick and Hearty (labeling it a "quitter") and are ready to move on. I for one say:1 point

Just wanting to keep this on page one, so interested parties can get the info and we can begin final plans...still looking for players. What would you think about a guy, when asked about playing, says that he is getting married sometime around then and it might not be possible to play. What? Hen pecked already and not even married yet???? True story, but the "un-named party" will stay un-named as I would not want his reputation to be shattered. So, the wedding planning (I thought that usually went to the bride and her family, but maybe that was before the age of the "merse") would be so intense around that time that one could not spend maybe two hours away from it at a charity BB game? Man, that's some intense wedding planning. But, congrats to the un-named party. You are, indeed, a lucky fella...maybe a bit pre-wedding hen pecked, but still a lucky fella none the less. Yes, you know who you are!1 point

Point is, he could have coached here if the administration wanted him. They didn't. They also chose Coach McCarney over Fran (Texas St. ) and Kragthorpe (rumored as a candidate at Tulsa). Like it or not, the comparision of McCarney to Fran and Krag (if he gets the Tulsa gig) will be made early, often, and for a long time on this board. I kinda think they should be, considering we had our choice of the 3 coaches.1 point

I gave permission for my phone number to be used on this forum... only because I did not have a login created to reply... but I went ahead and created one so there was no confusion. I have no problem blocking numbers or unwanted contact but if there is any need to contact me about information or questions regarding North Texas cheerleading, appearances or other similar topics... feel free to contact me. I am so glad my team mates and myself could be involved in such a great event for one of my past gymnastics students.
