There's nothing wrong with reminiscing about Hayden Fry. It's just the Dodge eating a cheeseburger thing...what was the point? The man and his son are gone. They didn't do what they set out to do here. It's no big deal. Not every hire is the right hire. This isn't the only hire in the history of college football that didn't work out. We seem to cling to failure around here. Dodge bangers banged on Darrell Dickey for year with no particular point to make. Why do we have to play it out with Dodge? It's no less pointless with Dodge than it was with Dickey? I'm sure the Dodge bangers understand by now that he failed here. There's no point in rehashing it to them week after week.7 points

Agree 100%. JJ does discipline right. Nobody gets a pass... Not Sturns, not Colin Dennis, not the leading scorer in the conference. I think Keith Wooden even spent some time on the bench after his parking tickets arrest, and that didn't even have anything to do with basketball. He doesn't throw guys under the bus, he doesn't handle it stupid and splatter private business across the New York Times... But he runs a good, clean program and he obviously doesn't make exceptions even for stars. JJ knows what Tristan means to this team. If JJ decides Tristan needs to sit, then I totally support him even if I have no real idea what offense was committed.3 points

I don't think you can say that every year. I would say we got beat by Kansas worse than I expected, lost by 20 to Sam Houston, struggled before beating Texas Southern, played TSU-SM way too close and have been beaten by a mediocre MTSU team and a poor Troy team. I'm just wondering if this team is as good as we think it is, that's all.2 points

I understand what you are saying. If UNT wants to be a regional school to keep costs down and be more friendly as far as fan travel goes, that's their perogative. BUT... What is good for the fans isn't necessarily good for the school. These aren't mutually exclusive, but they certainly don't align all the time. Fans travelling to the games is trumped by playing in a more prestigous conference. Besides, fans don't travel well to away games in ANY conference... some do more than others, but to worry about that as a hinderance to moving up on the food chain is self limiting in my opinion. As far as exposure goes... i'm not sure I understand where you are going with that. You have such fertile recruiting ground right in your own back yard, what more exposure do you need? Win in the MWC and recruits in TEXAS will want to play for UNT. You can win with Texans. It's not like you'd start recruiting Ohio or Kentucky if you joined CUSA, or in Idaho or Utah in the MWC. Your recruiting base will stay the same no matter what conference you are in. It's not like you are a non-regional recruiter in the SBC now. If Mac can get the better guys in your own backyard to sign with UNT you can win in ANY conference. That to me is more beneficial to the UNT athletics department and would make the fan base happier than going into a lesser conference so that fans can travel to away games easier. This whole mongolian cluster boink of TV deals that drives the NCAA is certainly going to expand into on-line packages, streaming, etc. Worrying about conference "footprint" for TV deals will be obsolete soon. UNT will get plenty of exposure in the MWC when you are kicking ass and taking names. This would be a better scenario than being in CUSA or SBC and kicking ass there.2 points

While watching the NFL playoff game in the Chicago snow this afternoon, I was reminded of the days in 1AA when UNT played a game in a blizzard in Reno and lost (in overtime, I believe, or at least on a drive the last few moments of the game which we didn't complete around the 20 yard line). I remember it was cold!!! And I remember the team plane was 8 hours or more late leaving for home because it carried too much weight to get over the mountains on takeoff. It's been a long time, but I believe they sent the football equipment back on a separate plane so we would meet the weight limit required to take off in those conditions. I also remember eveyone being broke by the time we left---nothing else to do while waiting but play those slots! Anyone else attend the game and have any memories they want (can) share? What games did you attend that would qualify for becoming "legendary game stories" like this one for current and future generations to enjoy?1 point

A place where the obsessed one way or the other can keep posting to themselves without interfering with the North Texas football talk? Maybe make it a VIP-type thing where only those who want to discuss them can go do it in private?1 point

I'd agree with that. Usually the Valley will get some good wins but even a team like Wichita St has concerns because they don't have that signature win (almost beat UConn but that doesn't get you crap). This year, the middle Pac-10 teams dropped some games to mid major teams but there's not a lot of top 6 conferences losing to lower conference teams. I wouldn't worry about who we've beat. I'd be more worried about the losses. The Troy game was the first loss that really shocked/disappointed me. We went from being overall favorite to West Division favorite (after MTSU loss and FAU continuing to win) to one of three schools that can win the West Div (after Troy loss). I've always thought you goal should be win all of the conference games at home and play 0.500 on the road. I'm going to be a little nervous until we get that first road win.1 point

I was sad to see the A-1 Thick and Hearty Burger leave Whataburger. As far as good burgers go, I felt like it at least had another couple years of eligibility. Fan feedback has been mixed between folks wishing the burger luck in future endeavors and those that are ready to stop hearing about Thick and Hearty (labeling it a "quitter") and are ready to move on. I for one say:1 point

The first criterion is the contribution that conference affiliation makes to the status of the university. Among the realistic possibilities, which conference puts our university in the best light? Hint - it's not the conference that includes Troy, ULM, & MTSU.1 point

We'll take our chances! TXST_CAT, I like your persistence, though. Seriously, even as a SBC school we still have the best destination bowl for our champion with the New Orleans Bowl and the 'Belt had 3 teams in bowls this year. The SBC is no Big 12 but does meet our purposes for now. When we were winning, we had superb TV coverage here in the North Texas Metroplex which is knocking at the door of 7,000,0000 population--a larger population center than several of the western WAC states added together. Teams in the SBC who are in their losing cycle don't get much TV coverage but that is why we made a coaching change. Surely you would understand our want to go up the NCAA conference ladder than merely just making what most would see as a lateral move or even a step down sort of move? If UNT goes west, many of us would prefer the MWC and albeit that is a crap shoot at the moment, we don't rule out other things for our future conference-wise, too. UNT was where you guys are now going on 40 years ago and we just don't want to start all over (and many think the present WAC make-up would do just that). Our new stadium even has some of our collegiate neighbors making some well placed barbs at us which means they have more than just noticed what we have going on in Mean Green Country and at the Mean Green "olympic style" Village. Funny how Fouts Field never seemed to make any of those schools ever feel we would ever be a threat to their domain, but as Dylan wrote the times they are a-changin'. There are some schools in CUSA and MWC who would be happy to have a combination of our (finished) football stadium and a basketball venue like the fabulous 10,000+ seats Super Pit on their campuses as their "1-2" punch major athletic facilities (and especially with all that "ready to build even more venues" real estate surrounding all our existing ones in the Mean Green Village). I digress but that is only by habit. GMG!1 point

As far as the history lesson on the Big West/WAC, I should also point out that the Big West does still exist for all sports except football. When the Big West decided to drop football, the member schools joined the WAC. When the SBC formed, NT, New Mexico St, and Utah St joined. I think NMSU and USU wen't indy for a year after the Big West dropped football. a couple of years later NMSU and USU backstabbed the SBC, after committing to the SBC, and bolted for the WAC. I don't blame them for joining the WAC, just thought it was sorry to leave after the conference meeting where all the schools committed to the SBC. Anyways, just dropping some knowledge on ya1 point

If not ESPN, I'm guessing that Lifetime, Oxygen, or the new Oprah network would be interested.1 point

Especially considering that ESPN has a WAC contract and airs one game a week, and this would presumably be part of that contract. There are what, 7 football teams in the WAC at the moment? That means ESPN has 3 games to choose from in any given week, at least until the contract is up and they don't have to air any WAC games if they don't want to. Move over, San Jose State vs. Utah State! The RIVALRY has ARRIV-ALRY'd!1 point
-
I'm a big fan of when supporters of other schools post on here, but this really has nothing to do with North Texas football. Also, I do not think that potential ESPN interest in a game two years away, between a current 1-AA school, and another that is yet to play their first down of football is so newsworthy that it transcends the fact that it has nothing to do with UNT...or our football team. Nevertheless...I would not mind TSU-SM joining the Sun Belt.1 point

The first criteria when determining what conference is best for UNT is distance to other conference schools? CUSA definately has this going for it. That said, if the most defining reason for joining a conference is travel distance... maybe major conference football isn't for UNT in the first place. Lemme ask you this... Lets say UNT joins CUSA and wins every game... has an undefeated season. Would that be more impressive than running the table in the MWC? Which conference is more impressive to win? The answer to those questions should tell you what conference is better for UNT. At the very least, you would have had to beat Boise to win the MWC. That right there is reason to prefer a MWC invite over a CUSA invite. If the eventual goal is to get into an AQ conference, the MWC is the place to be. The opportunity to play higher profile conference teams is there, not CUSA...1 point

Nice signing, but obviously not the immediate impact player we need at this position for next year. We really need to find a JUCO DT to help immediately next year.1 point

For UNT CUSA beats the MWC every time. The travel savings for having 4 schools within 5 hours drive time is the key. But since we don't have an invite from either conference I don't see how this thread got to 4 pages.1 point

Good timing for my daughter to have a dead battery on her car, after replacing her battery I asked her to take me up to the AC so I could view the progress of the stadium. We arrived at the AC around 12:30 this afternoon and there were a slew of recruits (with their families) touring the facilities. For those of you with an interest in lineman there were some big dudes in the group (no telling if they were offensive or defensive). In fact, I heard Coach Mac ask one of the guys leaving the training room, "how did you weigh out?" and the kid replied, "275lbs". He was around 6"3. Even with all the activity, Coach Mac took 3-4 minutes to chat with my daughter about the upcoming soccer season. In the 5-10 minutes of watching the recruits and their families they really seemed impressed with the facilities - lots of smiles. After seeing recruits in person on campus, I'm confident it won't be long until we hear about more commitments.1 point

This has not so much to do with this kid as it does to a question of "why does UNT need another QB prospect?" I tend to think UNT is doing fine with its current crew and QB commits. What I think UNT needs is some defensive help in a big way and an all out effort might be considered to get some defensive help into Denton. UNT would have won several games last season if the defense could have made just one stop at the critical time. I guess you could say that about just about every team, but in UNT's case, the offense put up enough points in almost every game to win if only the defense could have stepped up a bit. I am a firm believer that this new coaching staff will get tons more out of the players it currently has on the defensive side of the ball as UNT is not devoid of talented athletes on the D-side. I think fans will see some surprises as to how well some of our current defensive guys will play next year...so much so that questions will asked such as "where did that guy come from? and is that the same guy we saw last season?...based on the ability of this new staff to actually coach these kids and instill a new positive attitude on the defensive side. BUT, that still does not negate the fact that I believe UNT's first and primary focus this off-season should be on the recruitment of as many players as possible for the defense. Before anyone jumps here, I am not advocating that UNT completely ignore the offense in this recruiting class, but simply to focus on the defense. How many QB's does one need?1 point
