Oh boohoo! I'm glad he'll be playing. UH- at it's core- is no more high-profile a program than UNT, we've just spent the last 5 years sucking ace while they've been kicking it. Who cares. UH dropped games to several middle-of-the-road teams in the Heisman dream season that saw wins over Tech, Ok State, and Mississippi State- and Keenum was a large part of the reason they lost. We've got as good a chance as anyone in this game, and it starts with an actual college coach that knows how to draw up legit defensive plays, an actual college offensive coordinator, and a ridiculous running back.3 points

Funny to see a TCU fan throwing stones about the quality of a stadium...and remind me again why half this board was congratulating them and calling for a co-championship? Another few years of success and their douchebaggery will be much more than SMU's.2 points
-
Really? Then what do you call that slide trombone sticking out of a "not to be mentioned" spot"?????2 points

Like it or not, TCU and SMU look at us as irrelevant in football right now (along with the rest of the metroplex). While this series always seems to be near the top of our fans' priority lists, it is about 1,758,697 on the do to list of TCU and SMU. And it is our fault. Win. Make people notice you. Make a potential match up something the casual fan would like to see (instead of 40 members of this board). Just saying...2 points

I totally disagree with the national exposure comment. As a nonpartisan observer, I’d say that the MWC carries more “prestige” nationally than CUSA does. Given both as an option as UNT president I would sign with the MWC no questions asked. My perception may not reflect the actual quality of football, but if somebody were to ask me which conference was a “better” football conference I’d say the MWC without hesitation. I’d venture to say that most people who don’t have a rooting interest in either conference feel the same. All this talk of the MWC and its potential AQ status this summer during all of the re-alignment talk probably influences my thinking quite a bit. There was zero such talk of CUSA in this manner. Even though TCU left, that AQ discussion sticks in peoples heads and the MWC is benefiting from it even now. Believe me… during all of the Armageddon talk among Big 12 fans, I was preparing myself for the worst. We Iowa State fans were hoping to get a Big East invite if the Big 12 folded (which looks like it would have happened). Universally, we would have hoped for a MWC invite over any other conference not named the Big 10. What is UNT’s stance on accepting partial qualifiers? One of the things you guys seem to be overlooking when discussing the “rise” of Boise State is their entrance requirements. They can take an unlimited number of partial qualifiers, while the Big 12, Big 10 and Pac 12 schools cannot (don’t know the specifics, but I think Big 12 schools get 1 partial qualifier for football). There are a hell of a lot of good west coast players that can’t get into USC, Washington, Cal, etc. or any other AQ school for that matter. Boise can take AQ quality players without as much recruiting competition. If UNT accepts partial qualifiers like Fresno and Boise you will be able to kick the MWC’s ass. You guys would have by FAR the best recruiting territory covered and with the facility upgrades your infrastructure would be second to none. Your coaching staff is AQ both in experience and pay grade. Why would the MWC be after ANY CUSA schools, or UTSA or Texas State for that matter? That’s a serious question. I can’t think of a single reason UNT shouldn’t get the nod over these schools. Maybe you guys know something I don’t. Not having been immersed in the culture of UNT or other schools in question, I don’t really have any preconceived notions of “pecking order”, etc. Maybe that makes me naïve, but based on potential I see going forward there is no reason to NOT think of UNT in the same frame of mind as Colorado State, Air Force, New Mexico, etc. Seriously. Anyhoo... I like the conference discussions Sorry about the long post.2 points

The poster had little to do with it. The premise came mostly from an interview with Craig Thompson by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in which he intimated that the eastern terminus of the MWC would be Texas. There are four Texas teams in the Big 12 and four in CUSA. Needless to say, the Big 12 schools will not move down in class. Neither will TCU, whose moving up created the possible vacancy. It has been stated that Houston, Rice and SMU are not interested in leaving CUSA for the MWC, which they consider a lateral move. UTEP has stated that it is happy in CUSA and would not consider a move if they are the only Texas team. That leaves only one Texas FBS team...North Texas. This is only a premise. There have been no official meetings among MWC members nor public statements by the MWC office. This is pure off-season speculation. However, given the new stadium, a substantial increase in projected revenue, a new coaching staff with salaries commensurate with many MWC teams, and statements and actions from our Athletic Department and administration (including the hiring of a consultant) we have plans to advance the program to a conference where payouts are higher. If the MWC wants to retain its presence in the 5th largest media market it is a distinct possibility that North Texas would be chosen. The depressing thing to me is to constantly see the doom and gloom of 'woe is me', we'll never be able to move from where we are now. It's true that our past has not been filled with agressive ambition to advance our cause, save for the Hayden Fry era. But, mostly it was because our administration was holding us back. That's not true of the last three presidents, however, and the current president has more experience with the NCAA than all of our previous presidents combined in our entire history. The times...they are a changin'.2 points

That's the number I was told. I guess we know McNulty (QB from Iowa) and Donnovon Young (RB from Houston, who has verbaled to Illinois) are two of the 15. Hopefully some D linemen are visiting. Maybe some more names will surface.1 point

I know that Coach McCarney is pretty much untouchable around here until he starts to lose football games, but IMO I think it was just plain dumb if Riley was basically told that he would have no chance to win the job in the Spring/Summer. I've never been a huge advocate for Riley at QB, but he was our starter just a few weeks ago, and had definitely shown some recent improvement. Especially in the turnover department. Oh well, dead subject anyway.1 point

Does the general fan even know about the mid major top 25 poll? We could tout it all we want but if the general fan we are trying to attract knows nothing about it, I don't think it would have the positive impact some are hoping for.1 point
-
This. It does have some cred in the fact that coaches are the voters...but saying UNT is #9 in the country according to the Mid-Major Poll is like saying a player shoots an outstanding 66% from the field when he only went 2 for 3...yes, technically its true, but its not terribly significant. That said, if it puts butts in the Pit...lets make an effing banner.1 point

In the grand scheme of things, the mid-major top 25 poll isn't The Top 25 Poll.1 point

Interesting, and I heard after our game at TCU in 02, I believe, when we should have won, that one of the TCU Assistant Coaches said they wouldn't schedule us again. Said something to the effect that we were no longer the easy win.1 point

If the SOW isn't going to be the eagle represented on the helmet then keep the lettering. Smitty's helmet is the only one I like with an eagle. I say, just keep what we have so I don't have to buy a new mini helmet. Also of note, the NT with the star is terrible too.1 point

I would prefer C-USA over MWC because of the geography, but I would take MWC over the Belt in a heartbeat.1 point

UTSA is in a great destination city and with a stadium that 2 AQ teams annually have no problems accepting bowl invites to the Alamo City. UH & SMU would merely be re-arranging their respective deck chairs to go with the MWC, but North Texas would be getting a ticket on a nice, new luxury cruise ship if we got in. We would not come into the MWC hat in hand, either--we have an upside to offer this league that I'd bet their top officials already recognize. GMG!1 point

Those flying worm helmets were the ones that North Texas wore when Hayden Fry was coach. I prefer "stylized Eagle". They represent one of the most winning eras in North Texas history.1 point

Everything that has been posted (except the coaching situation) is in regards to the "spirit groups" (Cheerleaders, dancers and mascots). I don't know details of the dancers funding. I do know they don't travel during football season which means they have more money in their budget for different uniforms and gameday attire... Having 6 cheerleaders travel to away football games means only one uniform (the same one for the past 5 years) and no other gameday clothing options. We enjoy traveling to away games... it's (personally) one of my favorite things. So... we choose that option. The dancers also receive a lot of benefits because they have a COACH that supports them TREMENDOUSLY. She works hard to make sure they are taken care of and have shoes, bags, backpacks, etc. I transferred to North Texas from a small D-3 university where I received a CHEER scholarship of $1,000 a semester. I came to North Texas for better education opportunities and decided to try out for the cheerleading squad just to see if I'd make it. I did and although I miss my $2,000 a year- I've continued to try out for the past 3 years. I've made friendships that will last a lifetime and had the pleasure to be apart of SO many amazing opportunities including: traveling, competing, performing at Stars Games, being apart of this upcoming Super Bowl, NCAA tournament, not to mention all the amazing people I've met by being at athletic events As much as I would love to have a scholarship, I'd love even more to have a COACH. I will not be returning to the team next year, time to focus on graduating... but I'm hoping the coaching situation is resolved SOONER than later. It's been rough going the past 5 months without receiving any word on a coach and I am so thankful to have team mates that have come together to help each other instead of jumping ship when times got hard. Tryouts are in April- that's about 3 more months for a coach to be named. Without that, we really have no idea where our team is headed.1 point

Scholarships, stipends, book money, meal plays, etc. is something the cheerleaders have been working to get for a long time. As the first post stated, his wife was told it was in the works TEN years ago. In 2009 we were invited to a dinner with Dr. B and RV to discuss some of these things. Although we are closely associated with North Texas "Athletics", we are DIRECTLY associated with 'Marketing and Promotions'. We are strictly a spirit group, not athletes. We receive lots of support for the athletic department but any scholarship money that is available goes to football, basketball, soccer, softball and other sports. We were told for us to be able to receive scholarships, it was up to our alumni. They would have to set it up with the school and somehow make it a "Cheerleading only" scholarship. In the past three years, we've gone from ONLY getting camp t-shirts and warm-ups... to now receiving shirts, bags, backpacks, sweat shirts AND shoes! I can't tell you how excited I was when an order form went around for shoe sizes at one of our practices. It was like an answered prayer. We think small... I'd probably have a heart attack if scholarships were ever a real possibility; I'm just thrilled we have shoes. However, this year... we lost a coach... mid-season. This really wouldn't have been such a bad situation if there was any sort of backup plan... but my team mates have just been put on the back burner. Understandably, they have bigger fish to fry... the football team also lost a coach so that was a little more of a priority than ours... and there is a HUGE new stadium in construction... but they fired the cheer coach and although there have been applicants, there has [still] not been a single interview... or even a call back. Anyway- As far as I've been told... there is no scholarship money available for *spirit groups* (Dancers and mascots included). We are here, at every basketball game, athletic event, appearance because we love the program and the university. It's not easy... it's a lot of hard work... but it's lots of fun! Thank you so much for your support1 point

If we're going with Nike, it'll definately be on the ProCombat template. Here is what I put together. Took the wing lines from SOW and incorporated them into the pants stripe. Also robbed the Houston Texans numbers as the points go perfectly with our word mark. ProCombat shield on the collar also has the SOW.1 point

In my humble opinion we should let Nike design the uniforms. They have been pretty successful so far.1 point

re-branding and marketing purposes. New sponsor, new coach, new stadium, etc. we have a new start and can go in a different direction. Its a good time to create a new culture and identity. My main reason for presenting those was no one like the current "North Texas" script on the helmet. I was just throwing out some ideas of something else we could do just for fun. Don't blow a fuse, its not like I'm officially unveiling logo designs1 point
