No one, or at least I hope not, is taking that post seriously; The MWC hasn't even had their January meeting yet. There is a strong possibility that should they choose to expand, we would be one of the top candidates. That's based off of their commish saying they want to remain in Texas, and the likelihood that existing Texas CUSA members will tell them no. It's just speculation and something to talk about. This thread is no different.2 points

The MWC has Air Force, ColoSt, SD State, LV and NM. This is hardly a glorified WAC, it is much more.2 points
-
If you think the MWC is "just" a glorified WAC, I will match with the fact that CUSA is just a glorified SBC. CUSA, although having other Texas schools, offers very little in national prestige or coverage. With Boise State, Nevada, Fresno State, and Hawaii all having strong success over the last 5 years and knowing that San Diego State, Air Force, Colorado State, and New Mexico have had good teams over parts of the last decade, I will take those teams everyday over SMU, Rice, Tulsa, Tulane, UAB, Southern Miss, UCF, etc. TCU made their way by ditching the Texas teams and making their way through the MWC. We can do the same thing.2 points

Will another SBC coach get a technical foul? We're 3 for 3 so far in the season.2 points

Now that I've seen a D-1AA message board, it's more critical than ever that we never, ever slip down to that level again.2 points

I've been a fan of UNT going back to the Mean Green days. Glad to see the new stadium and recent hire of a great coaching staff. UNT should become a dominant force in Texas once again in a few years. Guys, I have it on good authority that the pair of UNT and UTSA are high on the MWC's list of potential candidates if they can not land the pair of SMU and UH (which does not look likely). The prime objectives for MWC expansion is media markets to increase revenues and recruiting. With UNT the MWC will gain access into the Top 5 Metroplex market. Combine this with the large market of San Antiono, South Texas and Hill Country with UTSA and revues look very good. The MWC Com. recently made a comment that expansion would not dilute per team pay outs. The only expansion that will grow per team payouts is entry into Texas. El Paso is a small media market and UTEP wishes to stay in Texas which only improves the stakes of UNT and UTSA. Who knows, but if the MWC continues to be the strongest non AQ conference maybe UTEP, TSU, LaTech and Utah State could join for a 16 team league. BTW, you guys needs a baseball team. Texas is a stronger collegiate BB state than FB state these days and you guys would be part of the action with the Metroplex as your recruiting backyard. Just look at what DBU has accomplished!1 point

Link To UNT Series Total= 37 Wins and 48 Losses Ark State - 8 Wins and 12 Losses Florida Atlantic- 1 Win and 6 Losses Florida Intl.- 2 Wins and 4 Losses ULL- 8 Wins and 7 Losses ULM- 7 Wins and 8 Losses MTSU- 6 Wins and 4 Losses Troy St.- 1 Win and 7 Losses WKU- 4 Wins and 0 Losses DMac and Company have some work ahead of them to make up for the last 5 yrs...this much is certain. Troy and FAU are our worst series and one could argue that both schools have always had more a more able coaching staff than we in the last decade. The tables have now turned and it will be great to see us either close that ratio or move with a fresh start to a new conference. Other series of interest: BYU- 2 Wins and 3 Losses Boise State- 3 Wins and 2 Losses Cincy- 9 Wins and 7 Losses Colo. St.- 2 Wins and 1 Loss HOUSTON- 7 Wins and 5 Losses La Tech- 4 Wins and 2 Losses Louisville- 10 Wins and 7 Losses NM St.- 22 Wins and 9 Losses SMU- 4 Wins and 28 Losses TCU- 1 Win and 17 Losses Texas Tech- 4 Wins and 4 Losses Southern Miss- 3 Wins and 4 Losses UTEP- 13 Wins and 5 Losses ....wish I could have known that when some juiced up UTEP ex-Football player was being a loudmouth a couple weeks ago bashing UNT and saying they haven't ever won in football. The good news is that when we look at some of the OOC games above we used to compete and in some cases dominate teams that are currently considered better than us. This gives me optimism that if those schools have bettered their programs and team records that there is ZERO reason why we can't either. First step into doing so was bringing on DMac. The bad news is that in potential conference changes that one will need to look past our current Sunbelt record to see that this team has been a very competitive one in the past and will strive (at all costs) to be so once again. Tulsa- 6 Wins and 16 Losses Rice- 1 Win and 2 Losses (very easily could have been a 2-1 series) Tulane- I see no record on there of us having played them1 point

If we have a separate forum for the new stadium, we definitely need a separate forum for conference talk.1 point

Given the TCU administration's aversion to the old non-air conditioned Fouts, I bet they would really hate a trip to Austin where they put you in the sun for an afternoon game in September and the Horns players sit comfortably on the sideline in water cooled circulating body suits. Of course, no consideration to the visiting team to furnish them with the water cooled suits. Great hospitality by the Horns.1 point

Yeah! Remember our fight song: "Victory's in store, whatever the score!" In this case, victory for UNT was having a nice cool room to hang out in during pregame/halftime/postgame.1 point

FWIW, I think CUSA has the most bowl tie-ins of any non-AQ. Something to consider when arguing media prestige/exposure...1 point

If we do like we've done most of the last 35 years you will be correct. I do think what conference we're in will be even more important now. At some point, we may want to all start acting like a new "impressive" stadium built by those who built the Cowboys "JerryWorld", a new coach with FBS head football coach experience, non-stop growth on campus, our DFW alums burgeoning numbers, City of Denton and Denton County population explosions may actually give us a golden opportunity to not be the UNT of those last 35 years which featured a (non funny) comedy of revolving door hires, low goals and not 1 Top 25 football team at the upper level of the NCAA. A few of our opponents in action LSU (11-7 , 2 - 0 ) beats Arkansas ( 11 - 4 , 1-1) Rice blows lead , falls to Southern Miss ( 13 - 3) in OT UTA leads SHSU by 10 w/ 3 min left Kansas lead Iowa State ( 13-3) 40-34 @ Half And it pains me to say this , but shout out to Collin Mangrum & SMU over Memphis tonight. Doh finally realized he was on his roster over the past week1 point

I viewed the stadium from the center of the wing zone, about halfway up, and the view is outstanding. When you pan the entire stadium from that zone area, this stadium is ligit. Pan to the right and look at that press box.1 point

Since not enough people have posted on this topic, I feel compelled to offer some guiding principles. I personally like the color combination bright green and black, but that is not North Texas. There should not be black accents or black stripes etc but if needed for an outline OK. Otherwise all green and white. All athletic branding should aggressively focus on the current eagle logo, the full one not the head alone. The eagle should be a green eagle whenever possible, not white. The eagle represents NT and its people. We are the Mean Green, not the Mean White. The 70s flying worm belongs in the 70s. If we had stayed with it up to now there would be no discussion but its tenure was brief and now there should be long-term commitment to the current logo which is excellent. Other than the colors green and white I am not too concerned what they put on the shirts and pants. What matters is what is on the helmet. Let's follow Texas' lead on this and put just our symbol, not any letters, on the helmet. If there is effectively a way to have a green eagle outlined on a green helmet and have it clearly recognizable, that would be best, otherwise, green eagle on a white helmet, no stripes. The green eagle logo is awesome. If displayed enough, the people of the region will rally around it. The University of North Texas needs to essentially take over the North Texas region in that regard, with the symbol, not the words 'North Texas'. The association with the region will happen by itself if the symbol is all over the region. (Stickers, flags, magnets, posters and billboards needed.) The helmet is a strong way to connect with that recognition. Once people realize they are stuck with the presence of the symbol and its association with the region and thus themselves, they will start to care if the teams it stands for are good. When they care, they will contribute. One might ask if that is a valid thing to create. I think it is, I don't think it's fair that the people of the North Texas region are not as well represented in the arena of college athletics as they should be. Sure, TCU has an incredible team, but they do not represent the huge majority of people of the region and they never will. In sum, full green eagle logo on helmet.1 point

I would prefer C-USA over MWC because of the geography, but I would take MWC over the Belt in a heartbeat.1 point

UTSA is in a great destination city and with a stadium that 2 AQ teams annually have no problems accepting bowl invites to the Alamo City. UH & SMU would merely be re-arranging their respective deck chairs to go with the MWC, but North Texas would be getting a ticket on a nice, new luxury cruise ship if we got in. We would not come into the MWC hat in hand, either--we have an upside to offer this league that I'd bet their top officials already recognize. GMG!1 point

If we're going to start laughing at every disrespected lower tier school that starts thinking their program is taking off and their recruiting is going to explode just because Riley Dodge backs out of a commitment to a bigger program in Texas to come play for them, well... Wait, what?1 point

Wow, I'm done all around. If you see no common thread between those 3 deaths, there's no point in us going any further. It's a close call, because I'd hate to have fire up Factiva or Nexus and pull every editorial written in the last decade to prove my individual opinion. So...congratulations? P.S.. Can we do a new thread on the right place to stick your person? (/solicits via smiley)1 point

If Fran hires DD I'm sure DD will strike up past relationship with Mattress Mac in Houston. I'm sure Texas State could use a million dollar donor that might need a tax wright off or Two. TSU is a lot closer to Houston than Denton. Mattress Mac is all about promoting his furniture stores and I'm sure a lot of TSU alumni live in the Houston area. If memory serves we haven't had a HC that's brought million dollar donor to UNT since DD left. There's one more accomplishment to add to 4 SB championships, 2 National Rushing leaders (Back to Back years), first bowl win since Salad Bowl in 1948 or 1949, no UNT Bowl wins since much less appearances, and 25 game winning streak.1 point

What do you mean "we"? It takes all sides to create that match up and rivalry. UNT may be willing, but if SMU and TCU, etc. are not or have some "problems" doing home and away games with the three, then try as one might...it's not going to happen. You make this sound like a one-way street where UNT headed the wrong way and everyone else was willing. I dare say that is not the case. If, by "WE" you mean all three I am in 100% agreement with you. The challenges and problems making this happen go way back and much further back than just an A/C that may or may not have been working the last time TCU played at Fouts. If that was all it was, there could certainly have been an agreement that it would be working as well as it would be in the home locker room for the "next game". Too many folks have too many "reasons" for all this, but the bottom line is...as you so clearly stated...opportunity missed for all three schools to create a great metroplex rivalry where the fans from all three schools could easily travel and enjoy the games. Alas...what might have been if all three were willing to work together. I think the "blame" might be able to be spread across all three...with our "good friends" in Dallas shouldering perhaps more than a third. Just sayin.....Now, I think the fine folks in Ft. Worth see themselves as far and away the better of other two (well, being #2 in the nation might just do that to a fan base and a program for good reason-congrats to the Frogs). Might be hard to get this on with the Frogs and Ponies these days, but that new stadium will be a draw and do more than anything that could have been done in the last few years to make it happen. Enjoy the ride, Frog fans...you have earned it, but the high altitude might prove fleeting if you don't watch out and the fall to grace is much less fun that then rise to fame. Would love to see this metroplex rivalry get going....one can only wish.0 points

What? You think that wasn't by design? Next thing you'll say is that the headsets not working was due to faulty wiring!0 points

Not entirely accurate. TCU has developed an OOC policy since the 2001 TCU at UNT game of scheduling only home and homes with BCS schools, SMU, Houston, Army, and Navy. We are willing to go play the occasional one and done for a large paycheck (see Clemson 09) but we only have offered FBS level money for one and dones at our place. This all was spurred by the fact that the A/C was not working in the visitor's locker room at that TCU/UNT game in 2001. Now that y'all have new facilities, we are more likely to give a home and home due to the proximity.0 points

Why TCU ditching the other CUSA Texas teams worked for them as a MWC school I will never know--but it did. I do know the MWC and some good Mean Green football teams means Top 25 rankings while good Mean Green teams in the 'Belt may just garner some votes for Top 25. 10 years in the SBC with not 1 of our teams in the Top 25 should be a pretty big eye-opener for those wanting to go another 10 in the Sun Belt (and who knows, that still may be our conference in 10 years). Yet it seems UNT may soon have a "win-win" whether UH/SMU stays or leaves. Win-win? What a most rare conference alignment scenario for us to have in Denton. Wonder how La Tech fares in all this? Have they started passing out the syanide capsuls yet?0 points

Ooch...you guys are tough and must be really young. Maybe in your early 20's or something. Left UNT high and dry...really. Better job opportunity came along at last minute and Lefty jumped on it. Prior to leaving HC was given ultimatum by AD, 7 wins or out of here. Like being on 3rd strike or DOUBLE SECRET (SP) PROBATION. If HC fails will I be drawing unemployment? Go to another school, maybe lateral move, but not from job security standpoint. I think Lefty was OLine coach for Tulsa in 2005 when Tulsa schooled us 53 to something. Tulsa's been doing pretty good football wise lately, and I think if UNT was on par with them we'd probably sell out the new stadium every weekend or close to it. Mean Green Club would have much fatter pockets and we wouldn't be losing DT recruits to the likes of ASU!!! I digress. Point is the next time you come to a career cross roads take note of Lefty's actions because if you do you and your family will be better off for it in the long run.0 points
