  1. Yes, congrats to TCU for striking a blow for the little guys everywhere. We love you.... At least until 2012, when you become a part of the devil, at which time we will hate you unmercifully.

  2. Was at a watching party where the same UT T-shirt Alum were there (same that talk crap about UNT) and one belches out.. "I hate TCU" so I had to ask why that was and the response was "cause they sold out and went to the Big East" which I then turned into another question as in why they would have to make that move....his response was "cause they didn't want to play real teams like UT and OU". I couldn't even muster a PC retort to that idiotic statement so I just reminded him that he went to a community college and sports UT gear with zero affiliation for the school and/or Austin and therefore his opinion is irrelevant but unfortunately not unique with some morons out there agreeing with it. Kudos to TCU and all they are doing to get to the top and get the recognition that they deserve. Any team in the area (minus SMU) that can draw more fans into watching and attending college football games is a plus for us as well IMO. Great game TCU!

  5. Thanks for the suggestions about file sharing sites. I hope this works! Here are several favorites from the McAdow days including the original fight song. Please remember that these were recorded using vacuum tubes (boy, am I getting old!) The first link is the famous fanfare that Silver Eagle often writes about. It is from a Wagner opera and was played before the band entered the field for pregame. Pregame usually consisted of a march down the field. Then we turned to face the visitor's stands and played their fight song. Then into a block formation facing the home stands for the alma mater, then another formation for the national anthem, usually conducted by the visiting team's director if they happened to bring their band. Then off the field playing the fight song. The fight song is the original version as posted earlier. You'll recognize the melody of course, but this arrangement is completely different. "Glory to the Green" was sung by four guys out of the band! The other three tunes are representative of what we played on the field. "Colonel Bogey" was often used when the band was marching in a precision formation. "Them Basses" was a McAdow favorite played in the stands. "Robinson's Grand Entry" is a circus march that was sometimes played as the band was finishing its half-time show. It was transition music as we moved into an interlocking NT or NTS formation. The band then launched into the fight song while in those formations and marched off the field. Someone suggested that we have a throwback show and play the fight song as originally written. A few years ago when we were having a marching band reunion to raise money for a McAdow scholarship fund. I wrote the current director suggesting we do this for that occasion but did not receive the courtesy of a reply. I hope everyone enjoys these. http://www.4shared.com/audio/-KRZCKDa/Fanfare.html http://www.4shared.com/audio/zEG3AL-p/Fight_Song.html http://www.4shared.com/audio/32Ad3Jb3/Glory_to_the_Green.html http://www.4shared.com/audio/G-16LAVI/Robinsons_Grand_Entry.html http://www.4shared.com/audio/TOtq8Xuy/Them_Basses.html http://www.4shared.com/audio/k01m56JN/Colonel_Bogey.html

  6. Starting in 2011, FIU will not schedule any IA team unless it is a home and home deal. Is there something that we need to learn from their example?

  7. I just listened to those MP3's and personally, my thoughts are that the changes were very much needed. The old version sounds very old fashioned - complete with barbershop quartet singing in the middle of it.

  9. Only problem with that argument: That game was originally scheduled to be Texas Tech, but they pulled out before the season started. Chris Del Conte, the TCU AD, pretty much scheduled the only team that would take them. At that point almost every FBS team had filled up their OOC schedule, plus Gary Patterson spent time at Tennessee Tech so that also had some play. Tech is also seriously considering buying out the 2011 game with TCU, so you can't put TCU at fault here when they have a schedule in place and other teams pull out. TCU wants to play anyone they can, for this reason to cast off this idea that they don't play anyone. They are trying to schedule Ohio State, but that's more than likely not going to happen.

  11. For the benefit of all, I'll explain this in non-musical terms. As Silver said, the fight song was played as originally written until 1975. At that time, Bob Winslow took over as director of bands and wanted to make his mark on the program, given that Maurice McAdow had been director of bands for such a long period. Besides ditching the long standing band traditions, he also "updated" the fight song. The original "Fight, North Texas" contained not only the melody that we are all familiar with, but rich counter-melodies and harmonies, in other words, the bass instruments were playing one thing, the tenor instruments (trombones, baritones, etc) another, the alto instruments (saxes, horns, etc) still another and the melody was played by instruments such as the trumpets and clarinets. The result was a very exciting and complex fight song that reflected the great music program at North Texas. The "new" fight song eliminated those counter-melodies and harmonies. Now, everyone plays the melody other than the bass instruments. To my mind, it is bland and uninspiring. There were also some other changes. The original went, "let's cheer the green and white..." The new version goes, "let's cheer the green and let's cheer the white". Oddly, the official words were never updated to reflect the change in the music. If anyone can direct me to a site that will allow me to share large files with the forum, I'll be happy to post the original fight song as well as a few other tunes from the McAdow days. I think you would enjoy them.

  13. My sentiments exactly. I'm really not sure how many people will go McCormick to Willowood anyway, seems like it would be a little indirect for most. There really aren't, IMHO, that many Denians that get worked up about it. It's just a very vocal minority that makes it very hard for UNT to be an attentive neighbor. It's garbage like this that makes me fearful of a real issue coming up.

  16. I was listening earlier to the SMU radio broadcast and it was almost embarrassing. One broadcaster is decent (guy from the Ticket), while the other guy sounds like he should be broadcasting High School football. I don't think we realize how lucky we are to have George and Hank, I would put them up against anyone. The football broadcasts are top notch. Thanks George and Hank, we appreciate all you do!!

  17. With recent talk of conference realignment I'm curious what it would take to start a new conference that wasn't dependent on east coast or west coast schools. With the exception of the Big XII there's not a conference in the middle of the country that plays D1 football. There are plenty of schools in TX,ARK,LA,OK that may not be BCS caliber but equal enough to unite into a "New SWC". It needs to be done. What what are the obstacles? And I know we hate SMU and they hate us but that's all the more reason to play each other.
    1 point
  18. Just need to confirm that we hate SMU, aTm, UT, Tech, OU but like TCU. And if this has to do with being in a non-AQ conference, can we freely hate them after they join the Big East? Thanks!

  19. Agree completely. True, UT won't agree to a home and home...or a 2 for 1, or 10 for 1 for that matter. Call Iowa State, or Minnesota, or South Florida, or Kansas, etc then. Call around until you find the teams that are willing to come into the fertile recruiting grounds of Texas, they're out there. Stop telling our team and our fans that like any good little prostitute we have to have to bend over and take it any way our pimp wants it for our money.

  20. I just love when people pull out the "they don't play anybody" argument. If Wisconsin had won that game it would have been "See, TCU lost when they had to play a quality opponent" and Wisconsin would have put their win over #3 TCU in their damn media guide next season. Instead all the trolls on the UT board (and some here) are harping on their conference and schedule. Gee, how many currently ranked teams did Oregon beat? A big fat ONE. Yeah, #4 Stanford and that's it. And TCU beat #5 Wisconsin...and #19 Utah. TCU beat the champion of the Big Ten. The Big Ten champ who put up 83, 48 and 70 in their three games coming into today. So which is it? Did TCU just stop a juggernaut...or was the Big Ten weaker than many want to admit if they were able to steamroll them like that? Too many of our own fans like to play the patch game...if the patch on your jersey says "big ten" or "big twelve" then you're a quality team. I'm sure some will want to counter that "playing in the big time conferences you have to bring your A game every week". Really? When you buid in 3-4 wins against 1AA, Sun Belt or MAC schools in the OOC and then throw in teams like Indiana, Vandy, or those two heavyweights I just watched in the joke that was the TicketCity Bowl? Yes, even in the "big boy" leagues, there are weeks off. Hell, anyone who rolled into Austin got a week off this season. It's comical to wach the BCS machine spin, spin, spin when on-field results don't do the talking for them.

  21. Perhaps I was a bit overenthusiastic, but the principle is a good one. 2 for 1 and even the occaisional 3 for 1 are all fine, and if someone is willing to fork out like Georgia will in a few years then okay, but as long as we're in it we need to do what we can to make the Belt as good a league as it can be. Everyone scheduling body bag games against top ten teams makes you look worse than you really are. If we and our SBC sister wives were to limit that type of game it would make a higher percentage of our non-con games much more winnable. We're never going to totally get rid of it, but keeping it to a minimum makes you look better which attracts the kind of people that will make you actually better.

  32. I remember when the race track was going in out by my parents. Everyone thought that it would destroy the small town feel out there and that was just for one race a year. Instead, what it has done is bring in millions of dollars in revenue and allowed those cities to flourish. The prperty values have gone up and the tax rolls have gone through the roof. I have friend that I went to High School that is on the Roanoke City Council and they have so much money - they literally don't know how to spend it all. If I lived in that neighborhood, I would be excited about having a big time college program next to me so that I could enjoy the games and the exciting opponents that would be coming to town. The city will have more tax receipts as a result and flourish as a result. Small time thinking and paranoia will eventually be replaced with planning for the game weekends and knowing when the game is. It is not even 6 full days that this will effect them, it is a few hours of those 6 days each year.

  34. I wonder what would happen if the Denia residents actually placed the blame where it belongs: the City of Denton. They've known for 7 years now that we planned to build a new stadium at that exact location, and they had 8 years to do something about it. A couple months ago, I think they said something to the effect of "in 5 years". So basically, it takes them 13 years to expand about a quarter mile of road off of the service road to the south end of the athletic complex? It would take a city like Frisco or Southlake about six months, if that.

    1 point
  36. Screw them they moved in next to the University, UNT owes them nothing. I have seen this crap with airports. The answer is expect Universities to grow and buy a house accordingly if that is a problem for you. Maybe we can get the state to come in and condemn the whole Denia area if they continue to bitch.

  37. Who said anything about "slamming the door" on the kid. I believe I constantly said I would tell him that if a scholly was still available when and if he finally made a decision, it would be his, but we would not be waiting around to play the "standby prom date" for him. Sometimes it is time to "negotiate" from a position of strength. I'm happy to have the kid sign and will welcome him as a member of the Mean Green Nation, but I'm not playing the "poor step sister" or "ugly duckling" for anyone. Time has run out for "guaranteeing" this kid a scholly. Good luck with that Miami thing. Hope you make up your mind before it's too late to actually sign with a great "up and coming" program with a super brand new stadium, a great new coach and an "awakening" fan base. Too may good things are happening at UNT to be anyone's "standby prom date"! GO MEAN GREEN. It's my position and I staying with it even if I don't find one of Quoner's "fat kids" to take this guy's place. You know, Mangus Hunt was one of those non-football playing "fat kids" that June Jones found around the SMU campus...seems Mangus Hunt has done pretty well for SMU at defensive end. Just a random "fat kid" that someone found and turned into a pretty nice first team D1 DE for SMU. Anyone see him block that PAT? You happy playing the "standby prom date" role, fine...go for it. To me, UNT is too good for that! If this kid can't figure that out before Jan. 15th, I'll wish him well and he can hope the scholly is available on the 15th. As for me, I'm OK if it is or if it's not. The kid had the opportunity to sign with a great school.

  38. Great thread Emmitt. Agree with everything that you, KRAM and greenjoe said. I know several NT fans who are not attending our home basketball game today....because they want to watch TCU in the Rose Bowl. Too bad there hasn't been something invented that would record games on TV....while you're away from home.

  39. I commented on the article, it took about 15 minutes because I had to go back and replace all the F bombs with more appropriate adjectives. These people don't want to compromise with NT at all yet they want NT to meet their every demand. I understand NT wanting to be a good neighbor and all but at the beginning, when the denia morons were making outrageous demands with buffer space, planting trees etc. we should have kindly told them to F off. I also understand that NT needs to work with the city and that Denton is notorious for being not only anti-business but also just pretty much inadequate at just about everything (except city officials being corrupt) but NT needs to flex their muscle and kindly tell the city to F off as well. Borroughs didn't like it when Jackson moved offices to Dallas and as much as I hated to see it happen, I enjoyed hearing the crying and whining from city officials. Denton hates NT but sure likes the $$$$ we bring in.

  40. I'm not talking about Brett Vito here....I'm talking about the people that run the paper: To me, they have had a huge anti-stadium agenda, all along the way. They're the same crowd that advocated that we drop football and concentrate on basketball (in an editorial... about 10 years ago). It's January 1. Yesterday was New Year's Eve, so you know there were no meetings about stadium parking/traffic concerns YESTERDAY. And yet this paper....decides to put two reporters on a story...that isn't exactly big news. So with the D-RC's front page help....the Denia neighborhood whiners will have a platform to complain as much as they want. The D-RC is just the right kind of paper for this town. Their anti-progress agenda fits in just great with the crowd that runs Denton.

  41. so we only support those teams that can help us get into a new conference??? if your point was nothing more than a popularity contest to get us into another conference instead of a true unt fan, then your post sucked and was pointless! we should all support every damn team north texas fields, whether we like it or not! and no...i don't attend wbb, swimming/diving, or other random sports, i can't stand them....i don't attend, but i do support in other ways. either attend them all or don't post this crap! there are plenty of seniors on the various womens sports rosters that deserve our attendance as well. at north texas, we are all fans and supporters. no reason to ONLY support the winners or those than can help us get into a better conference. yes, bball attendance can help, but you're an nt graduate, not a tshirt fan...support them all!!!
