I know that every year we collectively toast the new year and proclaim that we will do all kinds of outlandish shizz like "eat better", "exercise more", "be more frugal" or "have more sex" knowing that, for the most part (cuz I'm seriously gonna try for that last one), we have no real intention of chance of meeting these goals. Sooooo I thought here's a chance to make a resolution to do something we can easily do...and help our deal ol' alma mater in the process. Tonight, when you raise that champagne glass, or vodka tonic, or shiner, or glass of milk, resolve to ATTEND MORE UNT MEN'S BASKETBALL GAMES!!!! You can start Saturday at 4:30pm when UL-Lafayette comes to the Super Pit. The reasons to do so are myriad while the reasons not to are stupid. Reasons to attend: North Texas is 12-2 North Texas is making a habit of blowing teams out lately (including LSU) North Texas is undefeated in league play currently (when's the last time you could say that of the football team and expect it to stay that way?) Four words: WE ARE NORTH TEXAS...and that "we" includes "you" Conference realignment talk is really fun...showing that we as a fan base support ALL of our sports lends substance to these discussions instead of making them pipe dreams we refuse to help make reality. Ben Knox dunked last night...twice! And converted an "and one" It's a Saturday. The "I work and have to drive in traffic" excuse is null and void. North Texas isn't playing in any of those New Year's day bowls. None of them. They all have sufficiently large fan bases to cheer them on...let's cheer on OUR team. The "I'm not a basketball person" excuse literally translates to "I'm not a North Texas person". Again, if you enjoy watching your football in the Sun Belt then by all means send CUSA, MWC, etc the message loud and clear that we don't support our athletic program as a whole. I'm sure that $78 million stadium will be a great home for Sun Belt champions for years and years to come. Did I mention that this senior class of hoops players is DAMN GOOD. Why wouldn't you go to watch a team with "North Texas" across their chest WIN???6 points

There's no better way to combat the Denia people than calling them morons and posting profanity laced comments on the newspaper's website.4 points

I live in the Denia community and I am thrilled I am getting this stadium near my house. Now I can just walk home with a few beers in me rather than drive.4 points

Hope someone can link to the huge article in today's paper on Johnny. Great start to my morning. Long time overdue but shocked it is in the Houston paper.3 points

having been to LSU and seen how the game traffic affects nearby housing I have some sympathy for the residents. You are basically either trapped in your house or shut out of returning to your house for hours. I am told that market value of houses in that area are markedly lower than other like houses in Baton Rouge. We are not LSU and there won't be 91,000 people going thru Denia but on the other hand there are more outlets from Tiger Stadium. The Denia problem is one I am sympathetic with. It is easy to be critical of the residents when it is now your home which is affected. Not that much can be done about it. But being unhappy and seeking solutions is understandable.2 points

Great thread Emmitt. Agree with everything that you, KRAM and greenjoe said. I know several NT fans who are not attending our home basketball game today....because they want to watch TCU in the Rose Bowl. Too bad there hasn't been something invented that would record games on TV....while you're away from home.2 points

You had better watch out SE-66 will be in here telling you that your Bush caused all this and doubled the debt, and tried to plant WMDs in Iraq.2 points

It has been an inspiring weekend for me, now rain. I drove all the way out to I-35w & 1171 to sight my 300 WSM in and it rained. I don't even want to talk about yesterday, though it seemed pretty good and a beautiful day well until there was this pick 6 - down hill from there.2 points

I was listening earlier to the SMU radio broadcast and it was almost embarrassing. One broadcaster is decent (guy from the Ticket), while the other guy sounds like he should be broadcasting High School football. I don't think we realize how lucky we are to have George and Hank, I would put them up against anyone. The football broadcasts are top notch. Thanks George and Hank, we appreciate all you do!!1 point

I've never heard the McAdow arrangement of our fight song, so I can't either disagree or agree that the Winslow arrangement (which is what is currently played) is "dumbed down". Was the McAdow band ever recorded? I would love to hear it. The only comment I can make about the current arrangement is that by playing it two times through, it's too long to play after a touchdown - and none of the band directors (Winslow, Fisher, Williams) have come up with an acceptable solution. They've tried playing a fanfare after the touchdown and waiting until after the extra point to play the fight song - but what if the kick is missed? Do you still play it? They've tried playing it one time through, and waiting until after the extra point to play it the second time - once again, what if the kick is missed - or, what if there's a timeout or a delay due to a penalty? The silence after the U-N-T Eagles chant can be pretty awkward.1 point

My sentiments exactly. I'm really not sure how many people will go McCormick to Willowood anyway, seems like it would be a little indirect for most. There really aren't, IMHO, that many Denians that get worked up about it. It's just a very vocal minority that makes it very hard for UNT to be an attentive neighbor. It's garbage like this that makes me fearful of a real issue coming up.1 point

I did see 15 or 20 Texas State people at our basketball game last month... That's an additional $140-$240 bucks we made right there, people. Cash paper. FOLDING money. Now we just need to schedule about 350,000 to 525,000 more Texas State basketball games, and we'll have that stadium paid off in no time!1 point

Who said anything about "slamming the door" on the kid. I believe I constantly said I would tell him that if a scholly was still available when and if he finally made a decision, it would be his, but we would not be waiting around to play the "standby prom date" for him. Sometimes it is time to "negotiate" from a position of strength. I'm happy to have the kid sign and will welcome him as a member of the Mean Green Nation, but I'm not playing the "poor step sister" or "ugly duckling" for anyone. Time has run out for "guaranteeing" this kid a scholly. Good luck with that Miami thing. Hope you make up your mind before it's too late to actually sign with a great "up and coming" program with a super brand new stadium, a great new coach and an "awakening" fan base. Too may good things are happening at UNT to be anyone's "standby prom date"! GO MEAN GREEN. It's my position and I staying with it even if I don't find one of Quoner's "fat kids" to take this guy's place. You know, Mangus Hunt was one of those non-football playing "fat kids" that June Jones found around the SMU campus...seems Mangus Hunt has done pretty well for SMU at defensive end. Just a random "fat kid" that someone found and turned into a pretty nice first team D1 DE for SMU. Anyone see him block that PAT? You happy playing the "standby prom date" role, fine...go for it. To me, UNT is too good for that! If this kid can't figure that out before Jan. 15th, I'll wish him well and he can hope the scholly is available on the 15th. As for me, I'm OK if it is or if it's not. The kid had the opportunity to sign with a great school.1 point

Come on folks, Emmitt was trying to make a point of support for attending Mean Green MBB games. What in the world is wrong with that? To come on here and give him grief because he didn't mention WBB or any other UNT program is just ridiculous. Emmitt was trying to make a positive point about supporting the MBB team today (Jan. 1st) and through the season and on to the NCAA's. Too many people on this board want to find something negative to say about every post, and to try to make something out of nothing...or they just try to be "cute". I say "thanks", Emmitt for starting the New Year out with a positive resolution concerning UNT athletics. If WBB (or Soccer for that matter) is your "thing", great, attend those games and be happy...and do what you can to increase attendance at those events just as Emmitt is trying to do for men's basketball. But, try to understand what Emmitt is trying to say (and other posters as well) before you jump in and either hijack the post with some "cute" post or bang on the guy for trying to be positive. BTW, see you at the game today! Happy New Year and GO MEAN GREEN!1 point

While your attempt to bastardize my original point is appreciated (and kudos for cleverness winning you the +1's) I think we all know potential conference invites would weigh heavily on football and men's bball attendance, which was my point. Again, cutesee suits you though.1 point

I am starting that resolution tomorrow. Unfortunately i work nights and don't get to go to many games but gotta go when i can. The start to this season is awesome.1 point

The Sam Houston game showed the team what happens when they overlook someone. I don't expect that to happen again this year. Undefeated in conference play.1 point

Their uniforms are considerably lighter in person. They only appear dark green on your television.1 point

How about the USF green? Looking at the USF game now - I like their green jersey color. Everybody says that dark green doesn't show up well on TV, but I think theirs looks good.1 point

I agree with this post on so many different levels. As alum we gripe and complain about the lack of attention, lack of exposure, lack of publicity, lack of respect, etc that is given to our fine university and yet we ourselves are the ones that constantly run us down, both publicly and behind closed doors on this forum. I am proud of my degree from NT, I have done well with it (to me anyway) and I wouldn't trade my experiences here for anything. I think for too many years the very vocal minority has tried to point out every single flaw we have while the very silent majority stood around with our thumbs up our rears. NT needs to start standing up proud and getting the respect we deserve from the general public and our alum base as well.1 point

Yep. They're broadcasters who took an opportunity to call college football games. As the voice of those schools, they're going to have some affiliation with them regardless of where they went to school. Do UNT alums expect all of our great radio/TV graduates to only work for UNT? Seems like a tough way to make a living waiting for George to get tired of calling our games.1 point
-
Well, first, the kid isn't taking the time to see if UNT is a good fit...he already made that decision and is now just waiting around to see if he gets a "better offer". Secondly, I am not a big fan of trying to build with JUCO's. They are JUCO players for a reason. BTW...the 48 hours has now run out! See ya! Maybe that scholly will there be there when you make up your mind...maybe not, but I'm not hanging around waiting on you any longer. I'm out looking for one of Quoner's "fat kids" who "want to"! This is my position and I',m sticking with it!1 point

Honestly, I'm neither happy nor sad that smoo lost. They are so irrelevent on the local and national stage, the outcome of the game meant very little in the landscape of D1 college football. The McCarney Era will soon overshadow anything June Jones is doing in University Park, and the ponies will still be best remembered for their death penalty experience. ...and yes, I root openly for the service acadamies except when they are playing us and then I still admire them greatly.1 point
-
Mustangs are typically smaller then most horse breeds, but fast. Not particularly strong for a horse, again light and fast as I remember. I seem to remember that baby horses usually called colts, but in the case of mustangs they are many times called mustang ponies. Basically though mustangs were called ponies because they are smaller.1 point

One other semi-rhetorical question... If the particulars of HOW and WHY a kid comes to play at North Texas are so important... If it's absolutely critical that he love us first, most, only, and to the exclusions of all others anywhere and everywhere... If an athlete taking any and all time available to make sure it's the right decision is such a grievous insult to our institutional honor that we ought to withdraw the option to join our football program... Why would we ever take transfers? Or JUCO players at all, for that matter?1 point

The MWC has had multiple opportunities to add UTEP, but never has. UTEP's location is the number one thing working against inclusion in the MWC, as their goal is (or should be) largest media market and best recruiting area. If the MWC's requirements change to city closest to Ciudad Juarez, then I think UTEP has it locked up. Seriously, though, if you believe UTEPs PR, they have no interest in leaving CUSA right now. You speak as if this is fact. There are a million and one reasons why SMU may not even be a candidate in any expansion scenario: no other school in the MWC is a private school, SMU basketball is awful, no baseball or even a hint of baseball, small alumni base, poorly attended games even when they're winning, shady history, three winning seasons in football in the last two plus decades. The MWC, should they choose to expand, will not make their decision based on football records from 2009-2010. Could SMU go to that conference? Sure, if the MWC wants them and if they want to go. That doesn't mean they're the slam dunk no-brainer that some of our downtrodden alums/fans think they are.1 point
-
Strictly speaking unforms I really like SMU's. Even their red/white/blue combo unis they used to wear or wear once in a while is pretty sharp looking too in my opinion.1 point
-
Good greif seriously? Yes they graduated from NT but they work for SMU and UT respectively. Rich Phillips has been the play by play for SMU for a really long time....so yes he will be a fan of theirs. He doesn't put NT down. As for Craig Way I can't say I know a ton about him but he's the play by play for UT...so automatically he will have some sort of rooting interest for UT which is understandable and common sense. Your dogging of Rich Phillips and Craig way is a complete joke.1 point

Kram, I admire your zeal, but you have to look at the situation a little closer. We're graduating our starting DTs and the guys we have returning are not going to get the kind of pressure we need. North Texas is not in a position to dictate when Wright makes a decision. We just have to wait and hope he picks us. I think if NT were to demand he sign within a certain timeframe, it would just make the choice a little easier for him, and it wouldn't be in our favor.1 point
-
Regardless of what Scout or Rivals say about his interest in NT....he wouldn't be visiting NT if he wasn't somewhat interested in NT. Look at these numbers: 244 carries 2309 yards 9.5 average 36 TDs1 point

Right now Texas State wouldn't make a pimple on a decent programs arse or contribute anything other than a mouth to feed to a FBS conference. Even as a FCS program their football stinks and their basketball team is one of the worst in the country. They must be green with envy or they wouldn't have this fixation on North Texas.1 point
