  2. While we're rolling out overused cliches, are you familiar with the one about assuming? I spent several seasons on the deck. I don't think we'll miss it with a brand new stadium. The sight lines from the deck completely sucked (just like the rest of Fouts) and the food, for the most part, wasn't any better than anything we cooked up in the parking lot before the game. I also happen to think $900-1400 isn't a bad price for Club seats... and I say that as someone who most definitely cannot afford them. If you can't swing the Club seats, the regular admission seats are STILL the best deal in the Metroplex- that's where I'll be. So we can hang out together and actually see what's going on in the game. I'll buy us a coke and a funnel cake. (wait, we're still going to have funnel cake, right? .............New thread?)

  4. I wish some people understood that the MGC Hospitality Deck was a poor man's solution to attempting to provide something close to what will be provided in the Club level in the new stadium. When the best you can offer between different contribution levels with the Deck is the number of people you can bring onto the Deck, it's not saying a lot. Also, I don't think there are any programs of a comparable size to NT that offer such a thing (at such a low level of quality) as the Deck. What we will be getting with the Club level is how the real programs operate at a much higher price point. What will be available at the price point for the Green level is often the entry (our Silver) level at much bigger programs. I'm actually surprised that all three levels only require a minimum $500 level donation to the MGC. I would have figured the Green/White/Silver levels would have required something along the lines of $2000/$1000/$500 minimum donation levels. After you get past the $12,500 x 2 ($25,000 one-time gift), $350 x 2 + $500 ($1,200/season) for Club level seats between the 35s is a steal. If we want to act like one of the big boys, it's time to start paying for it. Enough with the caviar taste but wanting it on a tuna fish budget.

  5. I asked for a new stadium. Lots of people did. Still, there is no entitlement to new stadiums for universities. Even though the students (must have been the rich ones that passed this...yeah, yeah I know that those that voted won't be here to pay for it) come out of pocket for HALF, the rest has to be paid for in some manner. Stebo, you are screwed (if you move, lose your job, etc) only if you had no interest in helping to fund the stadium for which so many of us asked. I am a notorious cheapskate. But when NT stepped up, I did too. As an aside, I had every intention of splitting the cost of a suite with some friends. When the pricing came out, I realized it was out of my league. In fact, so are Green and White Club seats. I came in where I could afford it. Most on this board are going through the same math I did to find where they can help, and how much seat they can afford. I am sure it is a sticker shock to those that wanted to stay in Fouts or wanted a new stadium but didn't want to pay any more for it. The good news: if you buy ANY seat in the Palace Across the Street, your view will be better, and more comfortable, than ANY seat at Fouts. GMG

  8. The playoff thing that would be a good start would be the Plus One game. Make the Top Four of the BCS--this year Auburn, Oregon, TCU, and Wisconsin, play in the New Years Day Games, then the championship game would be played 2 weeks later. It would keep a lot of the same stuff in play for the non-AQs, so that is there as a carrot for our leagues still, plus it would incorporate the playoff idea in a fashion simlar tot he Final Four in hoops. I believe that if a playoff system gets adopted, UNT will get to particpate in one. It will just be a middle ground between FCS and AQ teams. It would be treated like the AAA playoffs in baseball, media-wise, though. Would it get coverage? Sure, and it would be higher than the current FCS playoffs, because there are many non-AQ leagues with enough name recognition to get attention. But the wish for a playoff system that included everybody and was sanctioned by the NCAA, similar to March Madness, just seems like a pipedream to me. The beauty of the current system is that literally every game matters, that even if you lose a few games during the regular season, there is still a reward at the end of the year available to the school, and there is precedent set to have non-AQ teams invited to play in those games. You can look at a team like Texas Tech and you can argue that they have a chance to sell recruits on making it to a BCS game because of conference affiliation, instead of a team in a non-AQ league, but a recruit could easily see, too, that Tech would have to have an almost perfect year to have that happen because of the minefield that they have to play every year in the Big XII-II. A good recruiter at a school in the MWC or CUSA could also tell these same recruits that to get into a BCS game, we have to go undefeated, which is hard to do, but we really have a better shot to do that here at our school in the MWC or CUSA than at places like Tech, OSU, A&M, KU, K-State, Mizzou, etc. because these schools have historically beaten each other up and they still have to play OU and UT every year, as well. If Boise State or Fresno State go undefeated in the MWC, they will get invited to a BCS game. The chances of doing that are much better than the chances of the Bottom 8 of the Bevo 10 ever doing that. Yes, KU snuck in one year, but they played neither of the big 2 in their conference that year, which isn't the case anymore. Now each of those schools have to play everybody. Sure maybe one of those schools will drop down, like Texas this year, but realistically, beating both Texas and Oklahoma in the same year doesn't happen very often and probably won't happen in the future, either. I just think that a good recruiter can play some of this against the lesser of the AQ leagues, but the key is that you have to be a great non-AQ team. No one in the SBC gets to claim this right now, but there are teams in these other non-AQ leagues that we can emulate and be able to sell our school in the future to some really good recruits. Is it fair, hell no. But the current system is fairer than what I think could easily be put in place by the AQ-leagues if the screws got tightened against them.

  9. We already have a playoff!!! It's called the regular season! Every week is a must win game, which is what makes college football so great. If you go to a playoff system, so what if you still lose a couple games you can still win it all. Nonsense. Even if you do go to a playoff someone is still going to feel slighted. 4 team playoff teams 5-8 bitch, 8 team playoff teams 9-15 bitch. It seems to me that things worked out just fine this year. And don't give me some BS about TCU should be playing in the N.C. game.

  10. why do you keep bringing up other schools? we shouldn't have one because they don't? who cares? we had something that i thought was a nice benefit to those that can't afford to the seats in the cl. the deck didn't look good, but niether did fouts, so they were a good match. i thought the ac would've been giant step up from the wood framed oasis at fouts and would have been an addition to the stadium, not cheapen it.

  11. This was hard for me to believe, but I'm just curious how many of you knew that one of the best features of the Stadium/AC Center, the massive deck over looking the South Endzone that most of us thought would be the natural new location of the Mean Green Club Deck, will not be used? Rick

  12. I stopped by the Student Union at the Galleria yesterday to do some shopping wearing my UNT warm-ups and a UNT Green fleece pullover....needless to say I did it to make a point to the owner. Well sure enough it got his attention. He came over and introduced himself to me and to let me know that come March, they will have UNT mechandise for us to buy!!! He also asked me if I would be interested in helping to suggest shirts and other merchandise that people from the Mean Green world would like....I must say I was impressed. I told him I would post on here and ask for people that are interested in helping to suggest items that we would buy and even come up with designs. If you are seriously interested in having a design, theme, etc for Mean Green merchandise, email me here and I will give you his contact information. Thanks, Bundy

  14. I'll take the BCS over a playoff. I have yet to hear of a playoff system that will allow us anywhere near the opportunities that the bowl system does. Right now 60+ teams compete in bowls. The absolute largest playoff pool I've heard is 24 teams....and no gaurantee that each conference is represented. Without that simple gaurantee, playoffs are a no for me....and should be for the rest of the non-AQ conferences and teams. Be careful what you wish for...

  15. Man I'm glad I don't have a handgun nearby right now. After reading all the negative posts about a great new stadium I might just blow my brains out. I find this whole line of thought amazing. It's part complaining about a brand new stadium before it ever gets built and before the first game is even played, its part about losing the deck when some of the complainers were rarely seen on the deck and from which one had a terrible line of sight to the games, and it's part about "class-warfare" where some want to pit those they deem the "have's" (those that are spending a good bit of cash to buy Club level seats) against those they see as the "have not's" (who will have great new seats in a great new stadium and who still support the program the way they choose ... which, by the way is 100% A-OK and appreciated). Folks, stop a second here and really give some thought to this. There will be no lack of places to have an "adult beverage" and a good pre-game meal at the new stadium. What one really loses is a ratty old wooden deck area with terrible sight lines and from which some folks never left to fill the stadium seats. My bride and I spent countless hours on the deck...her more than me as I hated to try to watch the game from the deck...bad bad place ...in my opinion only...to watch a game if you really were there to actually watch the game...and we will miss it. But, time to move on. Stop all this liberal "class warfare" crap and appreciate the fact that some are capable and willing to pony up some decent sized cash to help fund this great new stadium. My bride and I are lucky that the new stadium came after all three kids were out of school and out of the house and were able to help make that donation. Could not have done it when our kids were the age of FirefighterRick's, or when were were recently graduated and starting out in our careers. That time will come for many who cannot now afford or even want to afford if they can, Club level seating. Give it time and you may find yourself in a different situation. It is time the Mean Green Nation put this "stinkin' thinking'" to bed and came together as one in support of this project and in support of THEIR University. I really don't think anyone would say, "OK, I don't want that new stadium. I want to keep Fouts because they are doing way with the deck". Now, really folks, give that some thought for a second. Sounds a bit "odd" now, doesn't it? Again, the Alumni Pavilion may well turn into the nest "must" go place. No, Flyer, you can't sit in the Pavilion and see the game. But, one saw very little of the actual game from the Deck at Fouts.

  17. We don't have to hoist anything up. It's already there and has been there for 5 years now and it's damn nice, and it should be used as another optional level for those who can't pay thousands a year but still want to contribute. Rick

  18. I don't expect caviar. I expect something simple with a Texas twist that me and three others can afford, something like what has been served on the AC Center touchdown terrace off and on for the past 6 years during events there such as Mesquite-Smoked Brisket. After all, this is what so many of us have been waiting for ever since that structure was built. Now unless something changes it will be nothing but a nice fancy sun deck for crickets. Rick

  19. Because Steve, you can't come on here and voice a concern about anything? And if we get another Olympic Sized Swimming Pool some day that is a foot shorter than an Olympic Sized Swimming Pool, then I expect you to still shut up and pay up when I call you to up your Mean Green Club membership. Don't you know these things by now? Rick

  25. The news just keeps getting better! Although I'm not happy with the JUCO recruiting situation, I am happy that we are losing our high school look. As posted a couple of weeks ago, everywhere McCarney went to rebuild - Iowa, Wisconsin, and Iowa State - the logos were redone. Iowa and Wisconsin still use those logos. Iowa State's was changed within the last couple of seasons after McCarney left. But, the logo McCarney chose stayed there longer than any of their previous logos. Here's to hoping McCarney gets us as distinct a logo as Iowa and Wisconsin settled on in the late 70s and early 90s respectively. It's way past time for us to pick a logo and stick with it. Continuity is a big player in successful programs. Let's get some with our uniforms for a change.

We got to get the green thing figured out for sure, and I'm all for getting out from under UA, I think Nike does a better job of providing merchandise for consumer consumption, hats, t-shirts, polo's, whole nine yards...

  32. Yes, it was a huge draw and a great, affordable place to stop in on your way to meet up with family and friends and get a bite to eat before heading to your seats. My roommate and I took three different guests there this year alone who, because of the great hospitality they were shown, are now interested in purchasing season tickets. Rick

  33. Yes, if you purchase one seat at the Club Level for a minimum of $1475. Outside of having your own tailgating event your only other option will be the Alumni Pavilion located outside of the stadium in the Northeast corner. Rick

  34. There are doors accessing the deck from the AC Center and stairs leading up to it from the stadium floor. There would be plenty of easy options for the Deck to have accessibility to people who had already entered the stadium/seating area with a purchased ticket. Wouldn't be a problem. Rick

  36. Hayden Fry authorized the change for both the NT and Iowa logos and uniforms to help the program's image once he arrived at each. He used Rick Spears', aka Green Grenade, flying worm design at NT. The Iowa uniforms were based on the Steelers and the TigerHawk was used as the primary logo, and still is.

  45. I knew there wasn't going to be a deck and I've not liked it one bit. This was a benefit for MGC members that only required the minimum donation. Now it is replaced by the Club, which requires at least a $3,125 gift per seat ($6250 for me and my wife), PLUS the $500 annual donation, PLUS buying your seat tickets. I really feel this was shortsighted. If we were a big-time school building a new stadium, OK sure go ahead and do it because you KNOW you are going to sell out those seats. I get the feeling the club level sales are not going as well as they had hoped. The latest email says "over 1/3 have been sold." That's about 250 seats with 500 to go. I wonder if that's why they suddenly created the volunteer rep program? When the club level prices came out, it didn't take long for the wife and I to decide against the seats. It was just too long a commitment at too high a price... basically a car payment for 5 years for something that will only be used about 18 hours a year. You can't price out your loyal fans when you have failed to ever sell out a football game. I think the club level donations should have been half the current requirement, or two seats for the same amount. But that's fine. I will get my lower bowl tickets and bring in a flask and enjoy the company around me.
